The lecterns are glowing.
he is already fact checking trump
This is just so weird. The whole thing.
his hair is so distracting
Does he have a cold? He sounds terrible.
He didn’t do enough coke to last the whole night.
Thanks, and go As.
she should be able to destroy this
carrier?
Trump is just going to spout his usual rambling nonsense in a quieter voice, it seems.
Wait, is Mexico stealing our cookie-making jobs?
I do like the first direct question he was given, instead of answering, he repeated his opening statement.
Aww… he’s gone all Robotic Rubio on us.
He’s already getting pissy though.
Hey Look. He repeated himself again.
he can’t handle this. the last 30 minutes is going to be epic. and I am going to miss it
The split screen is incredible. He can’t hold still.
he can interrupt but she can’t?
Apparently.
You answered your own question with your pronouns.
someone told him Michigan and ohio
She’s doing a really good job of giving a positive answer but then slipping in a dig at him that he can’t help responding to like a toddler.
right?
Yes this. She’s in total control of the dialogue and he’s scattered. At the end, either she is deemed to have easily won this debate…or Trump becomes a bug-eyed lunatic and it’s even uglier.
Christ, what an asshole.
He’s desperately trying to shake her up. And thankfully she’s not giving in.
Step your game up, Lester.
Nah. He’s doing okay.
He has done a great job. Trump and his associated henchpeople are going to go nuclear on him.
Yep.
This quote travelled from Oct 2014.
Oh…THAT Lester. carry on.
She’s been fighting ISIS since the 1970s?
Yup. Back when she invented them in her little high school notebook.
Sigh. I wish she would have just dropped a “Bull shit, Donald.”
he hasn’t said anything about policy except some tax thing
clapping?
How could his answer on his tax returns have been worse? That was horrible.
He is so bad at this!
She is just dragging him. This is brutal.
what? stop and frisk is constitutional?
In Trumpland.
anti-police judges are just rampant, don’t you know
Yeah, those mostly former prosecutors are weak sisters in the fight for justice.
she made up super predator?
I think it was a horrible thing you made up about the central park 5
I have no problem with Hillary being called on the horrible effects of her/Bill’s policies on urban poor. That it comes from Trump is bizarre, but not wrong.
true
he is going to say Clinton is the original birther?
Yes. Yes he is.
Yep.
Bro, he made her Secretary of State! This is so stupid.
Dude, you don’t get credit for the times you didn’t discriminate. It’s not a credit to use against the times you did.
cap and trade racism
Did he even say “we didn’t discriminate”? All I heard was “lots of people got sued” and “we settled it with no admission of guilt.”
Nope. Never denied being racist. Just that everyone else was and he didn’t admit guilt.
I’ve read Dr. Bronners soap bottles more coherent than Donald Trump on “cyber.”
Wow, Howard Dean, really?
Dear lord, he’s actually serious about this.
Or trolling.
Could be that. I loved that she brought up “maybe he’s not worth as much as he says” in the part about his tax returns. That should be something her team brings up every day.
Seems he’s not saying he *was* on coke. Just the signs were there based on his medical opinion. Keep in mind he never ACTUALLY said he was on coke. Just asked if he was. Which is a fair question.
Suburban women must be eating this up, no?
Wait. Which deal was the worst deal ever? I thought it was NAFTA, now it’s Iran?
I honestly lost track of what countries he was talking about. China is supposed to invade Yemen or something?
No, no. He wants China to invade their own ALLY, North Korea. Good luck with that.
But it shore would be nice.
Doesn’t have the stamina. Who’s had more sips from their glass of water? You, D. You. Who’s had to stand there for an hour an half listening to you? Her.
She just haymakered the shit out of him right at the end there.
I’m relieved with how she handled herself. Some things I would have done different, specifically in responding to him. But did well regardless. And Donald shat himself. Not that it will change minds.
Oh think it will, of people whose minds are changeable. That was some people’s first real dose of Donald unfiltered, and they are not going to like it.
I gotta believe the consensus pundit verdict will be a solid Hillary victory here. Trump I suppose managed to avoid being baited into complete unhinged lunacy, just mere incoherence…maybe his camp can spin that as a win?
That was the ultimate example of Mike Tyson’s “everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth” theory. He was planning to be subdued and presidential, but he got that IRS question and went on tilt for the rest of the show.
i did not know that quote and I love it
maybe the problem was, he had too many plans?
The result, in this source’s view, is that Trump was overprepared, which left him without a clear plan to deliver his message or respond to Hillary Clinton’s jibes.
i mean, grain of salt until confirmed. i can never tell the satirical news sites from the others.
There’s no way he was too prepared.
The important thing is that he has handled the aftermath of his loss in a clear-eyed, mature way, rather than descending into madness.
Amazing…
Fixed it:
“For those few people knocking me for tweeting at three o’clock in the morning, at least you know I will be there, awake, to
answer the call!to nuke the fuck out of the world. You may not wake up though.”I want to know whether he was up all night stewing and just couldn’t hold back anymore, or whether he has figured out that 3 am is the time when Ivanka or KellyAnne or whoever won’t be keeping an eye on his phone.
Yes.
Coke. It’s a hell of a drug.
Ack. Fake account fooled me!
Happy to hear that Andrew Lambo is now cancer free. I had to remind myself who he is.
He’s a big Billy Beane fan:
Speaking of the emergence of the arrow of time being related to the (in)ability of observers to preserve information about experienced events, I don’t know if this paper passes muster or if it’s just shoddy scaffolding propping up biocentrism.
Having reached the fundamental conclusion that (under their assumptions) quantum gravitational decoherence cannot be responsible for the emergence of the arrow of time, the discussion of the role of observers seems like a very speculative afterthought. I’m not sure how a Universe would even begin under such physics.
Happy 75th birthday, Oski!
Gary Payton would love to throw a birthday cake in his face.
More Oski appreciation, this one including the Gary Payton story.
http://www.berkeleyside.com/2016/09/27/uc-berkeley-mascot-oski-celebrates-75th-birthday/
I have always liked this look for Oski and wish they would go with it in real life, except with the more common flat-topped hat instead of the Jughead crown.
Cuddly enough for Oski’s Fun Zone but also mean enough to rip the limbs off a Tree when that need arises, as it occasionally does.
So, I take it nobody watched the A’s last night.
I went to a show.
Colin: have you seen the Louisville band “white reaper?”
terrible name, but I like them
Nope, but I live darn close to Louisville these days. Polyvinyl Records puts out some good shit.
It seems to me, flipping between the Cardinals and Giants is the call tonight at least as long as the Cardinals game is in doubt. I have a hard time including the A’s in the rotation.
with plays like the one eibner and valencia just made…
I watched most of the game, for some reason.
If we’re linking to cool science papers …
That is cool. Do you know how to get such a device? Would there be an option for a home brewer, or just at the production level?
Allardexit
Is Mount Davis Killing Fly Balls?
Interesting stuff. Anecdotally, when I think of balls in Oakland that didn’t go out in the past 20 years they’re almost always flies in the power alleys. Before then my (much sketchier) memory has the failed homers scattered around more.
I only remember one: Frank Thomas. ALCS Game 1, just short of the center field wall for a not a grand slam to win it in the bottom of the ninth.
I was there. That game sucked.
Thanks, and go As.
eric fucking chavez
CAN YOU FKING NOT, ED.
Thanks, and go As.
srsly
Me too. And yep.
Sounds exciting
That goes right along with “We’re going to be more aggressive on the bases this year”, a staple of every manager’s February 21 chat with the reporters.
I would like to assess their bunting. Havne’t seen any since 2013
QOTM!
Well done!
this a a bad game
Yes.
I’m hoping this is the last we see of that mustache.
Ouch.
Between the Rockies and the A’s…good night.
Donna and Josh was the most obvious storyline
Thanks, and go As.
Sure, but they made you wait for it. I think it was well earned.
yeah, kinda like a slow-loading lounge.
That was a great lounge!
Wow it was. I just went back and reread all my comments.
Slightly related: Ed, you worked for the city of Lawndale? Like down here Lawndale? I happen by the fair township on my way from Lomita to El Segundo every day.
I know where just about all of the Balkanized cities of Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura Counties are, but Lomita was one I had to look up. That looks like a reasonable commute by Southland standards.
In and of itself the commute is in tolerable range.
What messes it up is having to take the kids to school in the morning. That extra 15-20 minutes going out of the way and getting stuck in idiot traffic jams pushes it over the line.
Come next June I will be looking for something a little closer or different. It doesn’t help I accidentally moved into a place with a HOA. Got a note last night from them. I had 3 bricks wrapped in aluminum foil sitting on top of my fence out front. Their committee found it in violation and had their lawyers send me a friendly request to remove them.
my commute to lawndale was chill, I lived at venice and centinella, took the marina to the 405 and off not on hawthorne but the one just before it.
only good commute in LA
LAFco was the patronage hub of the 50s
LA has way too many government entities. So does the Bay Area, but LA is extreme. You’d think some of those would be merged out of separate existence, but I suppose once turf has been created it will be ferociously defended. It seems like small entities are prone to corruption, and yes, City of Bell, I am looking directly at you. I’m sure FSU could articulate these issues much better than I can.
well, they were incorporated specifically to stave off annexation from LA. I think it was commerce or irwindale that didn’t have enough night time residents to qualify unless they counted the people conserved in the asylum.
had a really great class in college about it, we started the semester with “dodgers move west” then to the Lakewood plan city or contract city.
It is the start of everything that is wrong with California and lead directly to 80 inch tvs.
The little-known special districts always feel extra sketchy to me. Lots of revenue, little oversight.
did you see the last week tonight on that?
Yeah, that was pretty great/distressing.
Our sewer district is run by the Stateline casinos, which contribute most of the poop. There hasn’t been an election since the 1980s because the law provides that uncontested seats don’t appear on the ballot. So when there is a vacancy, the casinos appoint a replacement who then “wins” the next non-election. Their plan to expand their facilities in Carson Valley (nothing that’s been treated is dumped into the lake, it’s all pumped over the mountains and dumped off to our east) was controversial in the valley, one thing led to another and now the District Attorney is attempting to have the sewer district dissolved, for the elections issue, violations of public meeting laws etc. It looks like the legislature will have to get involved next year.
It’s not a no-brainer because absent is any accusation of ripping off the ratepayers. They charge me $444/year, with the cost of the pumping contributing, but that’s somewhat less than the adjacent folks in South Lake Tahoe, CA pay for the same service.
which have both been immortalized in song for their mexican restaurants (and what’s been left there: wallet, appetite).
you’re already singing the el segundo one. the other one.
I ate at Alfredo’s in Lomita a few weeks ago. Unimpressed. I’ve actually not found a GREAT Mexican restaurant down here. But I think that is more a function of me not going out to eat much.
the trick was look for seios. if they have it, give the place a try.
(dont order seios)
sesos?
yes
alfredo’s is a dive.
supermex in long beach. carnitas plate with corn tortillas, extra guac. that was my jam.
but yeah, it’s kinda different down there. more of a wet burritos scene. and sit-down restaus with tableside guacamole spectacles.
itsnot great, but you have to go to (cannot remember the name) the old sit down place in hollywood, or maybe not hollywood.
fuck.
I’ll remember
on olvera street, at the end close to the big bandstand, la luz del dia. carnitas on handmade corn tortillas.
and burrito king in echo park is a classic hole.
ah, olevera street, what one rich white lady thought mexicans were like.
yeah, that on, but there is another one I am thinking of
Writing all of these down.
must be throwback thursday…
i think my first official date we ate at pollo loco on hawthorne. picked her up at her parents to go to a show, running late, realized i hadn’t eaten all day. romantic.
i did.
that’s where i was on an interview panel for a cop, helped hire a dude who couldn’t make the royals because of Willie Wilson, and was told by the city counsel in an open session that they wanted to eliminate my job
also, lomita used to have a great record store that I am sure is gone because the proprietor was in his 70s in the 90s
It has to be because I honestly have not seen anything of actual interest in Lomita yet.
And to be fair, I am on the tip of Lomita. Im south of PCH up on the hill near Rolling Hills Estates. I have the snobs a half mile in one direction and projects a quarter mile in the other.
sweet relief
I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to re-watch West Wing. Those last few episodes are heavy.
Thanks, and go As.
Actual NYT headline this morning: “Democrats Worry Clinton’s Confidence May Be Fleeting”
Come on, y’all.
Apparently newspaper sales are more important that the safety of the union. Priorities.
The funniest part is that no one in the story actually expresses the view in the headline. It’s just a bunch of people saying “we wish this weren’t as close as it is” and “we’d better register people and get them to vote” and “boy, she sure kicked his ass.”
OTOH, this book review is just fantastic in its subtlety.
Whatever could you mean by that?
I’m fairly sure Godwin’s Law has been abrogated through November 8, but she still wasn’t taking any chances.
just because the view isn’t expressed, that doesn’t mean it can’t raise questions.
Wait. Is that a book about Hitler or someone else? It sounds like someone else.
Barcelona -> Argentina -> MLS Expansion Team is a novel coaching trajectory.
Atlanta are doing it right. They’re probably signing Guardado too.
Thanks, and go As.
Whoa, for real? That would be a great signing.
Yeah that’s the hot rumor.
Thanks, and go As.
Gotta have someone go out there everyday, amirite?
LOL, you mean handing the campaign over to the head of a racist/anti-semitic website, a figurehead who spends all of her time on TV, and an odious man who has spent 20 years ineffectively throwing feces at Hillary isn’t working out as they hoped? And they are blaming them for the effect on “the business” rather than, say, their dad?
Uh. He’s doing a bang up job of killing his business. Did he not notice when his Pageant and TV show were taken away? You know, like a year ago?
This seems like a pretty reasonable prediction.
Sounds about right.
Completely disagree. I bet he launches a new media network and instantly captures 25% of the country.
Post-ailes, and with Murdoch getting old, Fox news is in danger of no longer being the hard-right alternative to news.
Meh. That’s a lot more time, effort, and money to invest in. And while, sure, Fox will slant towards the left a little more over time, not nearly enough to leave a big enough gap to create the kind of viewership you suggest. He’s, what, 70? It takes years to make that happen. All while his funds slowly deteriorate. And he’ll still be on the hook for all his current properties and investments and lawsuits.
I think a Trump network would be a huge flop, if he could even get it up and running. He’s an idiot and a terrible manager. I guess I guess it could work if he just gave it his brand and let Ailes run it, but surely Ailes has a non-compete with Fox.
Champions League oddity: Celtic have taken the lead 3 times, and each time Manchester City have equalized exactly 8 minutes later.
A’s already terrible TV ratings down another 15% this year.
confession time. you guys, uh, i’m… i don’t know how to say this, i… i’m a techie.
SHUT UP AND PASS ME MY SKINNY HOODIE.
it’s only funny because i’m not kidding.
you want to buy the condo upstairs?
New job, or revelatory flash of self-awareness?
the one with the money.
Nice.
Congrats AV. No amount of nouveau tech riches could make you any less an original.
What he said.
thanks y’all. it’s weird though.
You may retire yet!
But now don’t you have to figure out what to do with even more retirement savings??!!
so i have a new theory on retirement. basically, we’re all gambling on not knowing how long we’ll be alive. hoping to work just long enough to pay for that unknown and variable number of years thereafter. so much handwringing.
so… take the variable out. like, decide to die at a certain moment. jan 1, 2030, for instance. i’ll totally know when to stop working to make it to that date. (it’ll be around december 2029. but i’ll have a great month.)
second thought, i hate winter.
october 2030. for that indian summer.
second second thought, yeah january. but in argentina.
That’s one of the arguments for defined benefit pensions vs. IRA/401k. It’s easier to do the planning on the aggregate level and count on the statistics to work out.
The downside is, it’s also easy to promise the benefits but not actually have the money to pay for them.
Well done
You’re totally disrupting me right now.
and i’m not quitting till i get at least one of these jokes.
https://toggl.com/programming-princess
i didn’t get any of the jokes.
so i slacked the #engineering channel :rainbow parrot: :party parrot: :brown parrot: :poop:, then went to #lunch (not the meal) and bragged about how many sriracha cashews i could food without a le croix. there were some replies i ignored from the couch lounge, until someone @’d me, which then i declaratively said, that’s not how #sales wants to force multiply? which got answered by an actual grammatically correct question, so everybody got confused and they called an all-hands to make sure any outstanding questions were outside the scope of the meeting, and a jira epic got started to schedule some 1:1’s were. then chews showed up with the vegan gluten-free seasonal vegetables (as opposed to vegetables that are in season), which we miracle-fruit tripped on as if the early 2000’s had never happened, while someone took a nap live on the hangout snoring out positivity about inclusion.
yeah, it was an interesting year and my last day is the 15th.
None of the jokes were funny anyway.
$200 rent increase per month.
IDK if I can find that.
:(
Thanks, and go As.
that is fucked up. we need statewide rent control that kicks in then there is less than x% vacancy rate.
I mean, I would support price controls without the restriction, but I hope that is palatable to real estate
sonny 92-94. but i didn’t notice curveballs
As much as I’d like to be the diehard loyal fan watching Game 158, this is sort of ridiculous.
Detwiler + the A’s defense is not a pretty combination.
yup
now that Davis has achieved 40/100, I can’t think of anything to root for
Marcus is just three Semiens away from 30. He would need to have a big series against Seattle.
A’s have clinched last place in the AL West — can’t catch LAA any more. They can still be spoilers to Seattle’s (slim) wild card hopes. But I would probably like Seattle in the postseason over DET/BAL.
If we want to talk about tanking for draft position, the Twins have an untouchable claim on first pick, but then there is a pretty tight bunching: TBR+ATL at 65 wins, ARI at 66, OAK+CIN at 67, and SDP at 68. I’m not sure how the tiebreakers work, but Oakland could end up anywhere between second pick and seventh. But I would like to do better than 2015’s 68 wins… just to get some hope that they have bottomed out and will be better next year.
Unless there’s a Strasburg or A-Rod sitting there for the #2 team, a genuine can’t miss once-a-decade type, then I’d much rather win now.
I guess I could settle for a Harper
Thanks, and go As.
All three of those guys went #1 overall.
The list of legitimately “can’t miss” #2s looks pretty thin, at least in retrospect. Mark Mulder may be the most can’t miss guy on this list.
(I’m assuming Reggie wasn’t “can’t miss” since he mostly played football in college.)
Verlander in 2004.
True, though he was really the consensus #1 in that draft, and fell to #2 because the Padres were cheap/stupid.
Fair point. Beckett in ’99 was second to Hamilton (though that draft also had Pujols at 402)
Just a random google, but this doesn’t sound exactly can’t miss in the Strasburg vein. He sounds more like a very high ceiling guy with some flaws.
J.D. Drew was probably can’t miss other than his bad attitude.
My random duck-duck-go ended up at the 2004 MLB site:
OK, I’ll give it to you.
I love the urgency of this dispatch. HE’S COMING TO BUCKLE YOUR KNEES AND BREAK YOUR BATS WITH HIS LONG, STRONG LEGS AND THIN WAIST. THIS IS NOT A DRILL. PREPARE YOURSELVES NOW BECAUSE HE WILL BE THERE WITHIN MINUTES.
Yeah, I can speculate about tanking for draft position, but I never actually want to do it. Pretty bummed that this last crappy series put LAAA out of reach, because beating the Angels was my primary hope once I realized that this season was going to suck.
I’m rooting for everyone to try their best, have fun, and maybe make a new friend or two.
Coach Bob will hand out the participation trophies at the pizza party.
but he is not getting the names on the medals this year, that was a headache, and he still has drew poneranz’s in his glove box.
Coach Bob also has some awards to present.
Most improved: Kendall
Best new kid: Ryon
Hardest punch: Danny
Stinkiest fart: Sonny
He had to white out “Billy” on that last certificate.
And if theyre not careful they might learn something before it’s done.
Well, here’s something to root for.
i like
Yes please.
Wait, so Ross Detwiler is NOT an adequate replacement for Sonny Gray? I hope Forst realizes this.
unsurprising result was unsurprising

Hmmm, not sure this comparison makes any sense.
I’m sympathetic with the idea that it’s basically impossible to design any good validation for election forecasts. But if you compare 538 to other prediction outfits, I think you do find that their model swings around more dramatically, even though the models tend to agree on average. That makes it seem like their estimator is just less optimal, in the minimum variance sense.
It makes sense in the vacuous sense that any probabilistic predictive model gives an estimate based on the data known up to the time of the prediction, and can change (sometimes by a lot) as new data comes in.
The difference, as Colin suggests, is that for sports scores we have a large set of historical data to inform our model giving a mapping from (prior estimate of strength of teams, current score difference, time remaining) -> probability of winning. So if two different people build models, they will either agree pretty closely, or we can look back at that historical data and call one model better than the other based on how well it explains that data. Whereas with US presidential polls, we have very sparse past data, and the political climate can change, so if two different forecasters make radically different estimates of future volatility, it’s hard to say who is right.
This is part of a larger problem I have with Silver’s work, or at least his explanations of it. There is a way of formalizing this kind of estimation/prediction problem. In this kind of model, you assume that at any time t the thing you are trying to estimate is in some definite state X(t), but in general the actual value of that state is unknown and even unknowable. The output of the model is an estimate XÌ‚(t), along with an estimate of your own uncertainty of that value. And the distinction between X and XÌ‚ is really important. Silver tends to elide this, implying that volatility in his model necessarily reflects volatility in the underlying race. That can be true (for example, in the basketball game, when win probability changes because one team scores a bunch of points), or it can be not true (for example, when the model itself adds volatility by being too sensitive to noisy data). Other estimates of this race are much more stable and frankly seem to make more sense.
I think this actually stems a little bit from his fairly hard-core Bayesianism. If you spend all your time thinking about the posterior pdf of your model parameters, then you can sometimes overlook the much more concrete problem of understanding the probability distribution of your estimator. The high variance in that model looks like it would naturally lead to overcoverage, i.e. if you *were* able to run repeated experiments you would find much more than 67% of the outcomes in what is supposed to be the 1-sigma range.

aw, he can be international if he wants. internationally ignorant, for example.
