Fleece blanket giveaway on a glorious early September afternoon when you would get a decent holiday crowd anyway. Nice work, promotions department.
Speaking of Alcantaras, what the heck is Arismendy doing in Stockton?
GM….
It’s a transaction wire manipulation. Players need to wait 10 days after a demotion to get called back up unless there’s an injury OR the minor league team’s season ends before the 10 day mark. Which is the case for Stockton, so the A’s can call AA up a couple days sooner.
Aha. Knew there had to be a story there. Thanks.
Rough debut so far for Raul.
beautiful day
yeah!
beautiful even through the window, as i am currently laboring (and belaboring) on deadline. enjoy your day off, day-off motherFKers!
oh right, relevant content here:

5 runs on 5 hits, 1 walk, 0 Ks, and one costly balk for Alcantara in 3 rough innings.
and 3 HBP (one of which was actually a foul ball).
wow, vince with the unintentional burn
“Davis is a one man wrecking crew”
Long game is long.
Vic Carapazza is a great umpire name.
On the bright side, Alcantara cannot possibly be any wor—ah fk it.
He seems destined for the pen, though, which given our inability to develop any decent relief pitching over the last four years, does not seem like the worst of outcomes.
Not sure how I missed this earlier: the Warriors are moving to 95.7 this season.
They were rightly annoyed at having their playoff games pushed to the Tinny 1050 by regular season Giants games. Sounds like that will mean the A’s getting bumped a lot to 98.5:
God knows what happens when the Warriors, Sharks and A’s are all playing. Buancasts, I guess.
Other good news in that article: THE GAME has set up affiliates in San Jose and Vacaville to extend their range, with more to come.
This also means KNBR can stop pretending to care about the Warriors for the most part and just go full Giants/49ers wankery.
yeah but how will they be able to fit in Giants fellating?
Thanks, and go As.
They will do it during every minute not otherwise contractually obliged.
I’d love it if the A’s were on
KOME98.5. I’d actually be able to hear the broadcast without static. That station has some big time dead spots up north, particularly along 280.
Yeah – there’s another 98.5 located somewhere out in the valley, and when you get on the higher elevations on 280, I think these two end up canceling each other out.
Gibraltar is about to kick off its first ever World Cup qualifier. They are playing this “home” match in the Algarve in Portugal, with not a single soul in the stands opposite the camera. Super weird.
Front-row seats available:
Monday 9/19 v. HOUSTON 7.05 pm
Tuesday 9/20 v. HOUSTON 7.05 pm
@ptbnl: I’d,love the tix for Tues 9/20 if they’re still available.
I’ll put in the request.
Sorry – already gone.
Oh well, thanks much for inquiring.
Looks like I’ll be getting one of these:
It’ll look good when paired with your Antarctic Service Medal.
Never been to the pole :-(
But you went to McMurdo once, right? They owe you a medal!
Nope – sadly not.
is that like going to the moon and staying in the orbiter?
twss?
Thanks, and go As.
and the #1 trashiest quote is…!
It’ll look good on your sgt pepper outfit
I picture the LBNL science faculty wearing the same classic white lab coats as all scientists, except festooned with laudatory ribbons.
Cool!
Awesome!
What’s that for? (and are you the guy who fired first?)
It’s for building the Planck high-performance computing infrastructure.
Given the drive to parallelism, I guess I’m both archers and we have some synchronization issues to deal with.
That’s a complex race condition if both archers are on target.
Fortunately it’s Planck, so one of them will be reliably late.
Give that man a Han!
Oooh, Pujols’ speed vs. Davis’ arm.
gak.
stupid defensive lapses
A perfect game would never happen with a superior UC band there
True, but the late-afternoon traffic is too fierce to get the band down from Davis by game-time.
Our fielders really suck.
I thought they were pitchers shagging
ye of little faith
friday is Filipino heritage night? Will Obama be there?
No, not until Kenyan heritage night.
Only had to wait until one out in the 6th to break up the perfect game tonight.

1-2-3 dp?
1-2-3 DP.
oh, scioscia, never change
yay!
Well how about that?

I’ve realized I can no longer function effectively in 2016’s society with only a granny phone. Do you FKers have any thoughts about Google Fi? I don’t expect to use the data part of it all that much, only occasionally, probably 1 GB/month at the very top (not planning on streaming A’s games) (they’ll laugh at this next year when I say I’m using 6 GB/month). At 1 GB/month that’s $30/month after the cost of the phone. I’m looking here for thoughts about Google Fi vs. other low-use options.
Me getting a smart phone isn’t quite Hell Freezing Over. That would be using said phone to sign up for a Facebook account.
I hate the Google Fi pricing scheme. Data is not a finite thing.
Carriers saying ‘oh use wifi everywhere’ is essentially saying ‘our service isn’t very good don’t use it’ IMO.
*IF* you happen to have a Google Voice number, or don’t mind porting your current number to GV, you can get a $30 monthly prepaid Tmobile plan, and then use Google Voice for all your calls/texts/etc. You also get 5GB of high speed data, but Tmobile’s anti net neutrality whitelisting of stuff like Pandora/Youtube/whatever make that cap essentially meaningless.
Alternatively, $35/month with Cricket Wireless gets you unlimited talk/text and 2.5GB data.
Also if you have Amazon Prime, buy the Blu R1 HD for 59 dollars RIGHT NOW. Absolutely fantastic device for 60 dollars.
Thanks, and go As.
Thanks. I am going to give Google Fi a test drive. The drawback is having to buy one of those rather expensive, even after the $150 discount, Nexus phones…but once you’ve activated the phone there is no further obligation to Google Fi, it’s pay as you go by the month and by data usage. Six months will take me through this year’s snowbird trip to Kona and I’ll evaluate at that point.
I have a Nexus 6P. Fantastic device.
I would consider a preowned Nexus 6 from swappa.com if you don’t want to go for the 6P or 5x. Still really good devices.
Thanks, and go As.
i am trying ting right now.
$12 a I think that gets you 2g. and its $10 per g after that
you bring your own phone and it works on the sprint network, so I don’t know if that works for you, although older phones are cheap. Sprint network kinda sucks, but i know it works in the places I go, (except for 3 hours a week i am in a bad spot, but I get by)
I can report the forst pay period is almost up and I have had no problems and its fairly cheap
I have lots of problems with the Forst pay period. It is fairly cheap though.
Country Breakfast loves the Forst pay period.
Ok I can’t find the other TV threads and shit so I’m watching West Wing and the John Goodman temporary prez thing just ended and FOR FUCK SAKE JUST NOMINATE LEO AS VP ALREADY WTF
Thanks, and go As.
Patience, my friend.
you all catch the sam seaborn roast?
Starting to cotton to this new pitcher
a base runner! in the 2nd!
Gameday went to this fancy serif-heavy font for the current pitcher and batter names, stats, and pitch types, while sticking with a sans-serif font for everything else.
It is weird as hell.
grrrrr.
[has to open game day now]
[if he even remembers how]
all i’m seeing is benton sans and opensans.
take a couple re-boots and call me in the morning.
Aha, it’s there in Chrome even after reboot, but not in Safari.
I’m using Chrome for mac but gameday looks all sans-serif to me. Weird. Maybe they are running some A/B testing?
MLB Free Game of the day.
Still blacked out.
lol
Thanks, and go As.
Blacking out MLB.TV games in markets that are not carrying the game locally is the most counterproductive thing. I don’t see what any of the stakeholders get out of it.
Runs
50% increase in (reported, race-/nationality-based) hate-crime in the UK since the Brexit vote … its a grim warning.
Not to take anything away from this very good debut by Cotton, but…
…this Angels lineup is FKing putrid.
scioscia is a disgrace
FK you Vince.
Generic or specific?
Specific. Making it sound like a great catch on what was actually a slegnA HR.
You’re so picky …
Epic five-setter going on in the Open quarters right now.
Victory! Sweet sweet victory!
So current candidates for next year’s rotation would be:
Locks (if healthy): Gray, Graveman, Manaea
Impressed today: Cotton
Did not impress, but some potential: Alcantara, Mengden, Hahn, Overton
Possibly competent journeyman: Triggs
Coming off TJ surgery: Bassitt
Probably non-tendered: Detwiler, Neal, Doubront, Alvarez
Are those first 9 enough to find a decent rotation, or do we try to add a veteran a la Colon, Kazmir, Hill?
Gotta sign somebody.
Yeah, with 2017 contention looking unlikely they will try to duplicate Hill and they thought H. Alvarez was the guy until this week.
Alverez is like getting an ace in november!
SF youth soccer makes me so mad
I know right? JUST PUT A FEW PASSES TOGETHER AND BUILD UP FROM THE BACK, JEEZE
Thanks, and go As.
I’m friends with the Director, let me know if you want me to help you connect.
you are? cool.
I think its too big and they have soccer people as staff and not professional staff.
they are nice people, but they really should have team schedules
I am cool?
And yes, the ones I know are nice and I believe they put a lot of energy into it.
yes. i bet they do. its really big, though.

this is new
First game today, no ref or field marshal showed.
Pretty bad miss by the umps in the Cleveland/Houston game – obvious foul ball called a wild pitch and 2 runs score.
I get that every foul tip/check swing shouldn’t be reviewable, but damn, lets have some of them be reviewable
that was madness
So we’re still doing the “never reverse anything (except against Oakland) via replay” thing?
How the hell does Jim Joyce miss that, it’s right in front of him!
Joyce also called time before the 2nd runner crossed the plate, so they could (should?) have sent him back to 3rd, just as the following runner who reached 3rd was sent back to 2nd.
If anyone wants to watch America’s greatest athlete in a tough fight, a tired Serena Williams is trying valiantly to fight her way out of the shit in the US Open semis right now.
Oh lord, she double-faulted on match point. That’s horrible.
Yeah, that was painful to watch at the end. She seemed to be really hurting, but gave credit to Pliskova for a good match.
I don’t get why she had to play two days in a row, let alone playing the early match tonight after playing last night. She had nothing left, even though she wouldn’t admit it in her press conference.
are they doing cut ins on Mets instructional league games or something?
Thanks, and go As.
hey-o
This Wells Fargo story is wild.
At least 5,300 (now fired) employees “opened roughly 1.5 million bank accounts and applied for 565,000 credit cards that may not have been authorized by customers.” How in the hell?
move along. nothing to see here
I don’t necessarily believe that, but I will say that in my days at evil empire bank when a “work around” came up to help you with incentive, or decrease the amount of work you would have to do, it would spread through a staff of 600 pretty quick, so if it moved to other sites it could happen.
The real unbelievable part is that it would go undetected for a length of time. We would catch these things in short order and cut them off at the knees.
“From that point, I began drinking the hand sanitizer.”
In addition to the smart phone thing above (I guess it’s technology reevaluation week around here):
Sling certainly got more intriguing today with the addition of Pac-12 Networks plus the fact that CSN-CA and CSN-BA are shown as “Coming Soon”. It looks like if I bought their whole enchilada package, Orange + Blue with Sports Pack, and they did in fact add CSN-CA, I would have just about all the channels I need for $50: mainly the ESPNs, FS1, NFL Network, NBCSN and Golf Channel in addition to Pac-12 and CSN. Much better than the $108 I’m giving DirecTV every month, I’d get Pac-12 which isn’t on DirecTV and I wouldn’t have to go out to clear the snow off the dish in blizzards (not a huge issue but a little annoying). The main problem would be, I believe the only local channel I can get with an antenna is the CBS station out of Reno, which has a South Lake Tahoe translator. Some things are readily available online such as NBC golf and Sunday Night Football, but others aren’t like Big Fox sports (NFL, World Series and one LCS).
I ordered the Chromecast device; $30 wasn’t much of an investment for an experiment. I wonder if anyone has experience with a Sling –> Chromecast set up. Sling offers a 7-day free trial so I think I’ll try it with the first Cal football game on Pac-12 Net.
no. but look at it alot because I want to watch cricket and you can with the international package.
I think if i did it t would be $35 a month, but I alread pay $8 for hulu and what is it $8? for netflix and have prime.
it starts adding up to the same as cable. and i don’t want to do that.
Netflix is up to $10 now, even for grandfathered people
PlayStation Vue, a similar service, already has both CSNs, so I won’t be surprised if Sling ends up getting them as well. I’ve been tempted to pull the trigger on it.
I will say that I’ve used Sling’s international channels on the Roku, and it is a little wonky. Not the smoothest interface, and pretty slow. Maybe a hardware issue on my end though.
PlayStation Vue also appears to have more DVR functionality than Sling, which is something I’d miss if I gave up DirecTV. I’m going to do some experimenting but ultimately I think Ed is right in that by the time I add this and that and take into account what I would be losing, the cost/value ratios of my current DirecTV setup and Sling or Playstation Vue are going to be about equal. I’d pay less by dumping DirecTV but would get less as well. This landscape is changing in encouraging ways though.
It may not be the most ethical thing ever, but…
Comcast allows you to create up to 4 or 5 emails per account or something like that. It just so happens that the email I created like 15 years ago is on the account that my parents use, so it’s a valid account to do stuff like authenticate to ESPN, or Fox Sports, or any other manner of streaming services that require a cable login still.
Thanks, and go As.
Yup. Works very well, and getting better every day as Comcast beefs up its “TV Everywhere” technology. The only things you can’t get this way are the broadcast networks and local baseball.
How crazy is it that Trump knows absolutely nothing about anything in the world, but was able to rattle off Putin’s domestic approval rating on the fly? The man’s brain is just the strangest place.
is my missing sock there? pretty sure that’s where it’ll turn up.
HE’s got a gigantic mancrush on Putin, it makes sense.
Thanks, and go As.
I think it’s a combination of
1. mancrush on Putin
2. general admiration of authoritarian leadership
3. exposure to lots of white nationalist types who revere Putin as some kind of defender of ethnic purity
4. traveling in circles with people like Michael Flynn, Paul Manafort, and Nigel Farage who are basically within Putin’s orbit
5. obsession with TV ratings/poll numbers, which he sees as objective indicators of goodness
EDIT: 6. Possible financial relationship with Putin cronies that we have no way to verify without seeing his tax returns at the least.
Frank Barreto is imbibing deeply from his AAA cup of coffee. 6 for 17 with a homer and a triple.
Meaningless SSS of course, but it gives me some hope that he might hit the ground running next year.
NO! ITS THE TRUTH OF FUTURE GREATNESS FAR SURPASSING DONALDSON. HIM AND GRAVEMAN WILL PUT UP 15 COMBINED fWAR IN 2017, 2018 AND 2019
I wish we had Donaldson this year. We’d have a shot at 70 wins.
Thanks, and go As.
Commemorating the last time he was semi-relevant.
That and commitment to his fetish.
In fairness, 9/11 is hard to remember.
Wow, that lead is brutal. Please sugar coat it for me a little, Sluss.
On further reflection, the whole piece is depressing as hell.
This Monfils-Djokovic match is weird. Entertaining, but weird.
It almost got even weirder when Novak started to look like he was cramping up, be he rallied.
His run to the final has included two wins by retirement, one walkover, and today where his opponent barely tried for most of the match.
Yes, a really weird path for him. He could either be fresher than his opponent in the final or kind of rusty from not having great matches leading up to it.
This business of rooting for the Dodgers, Mets and Cardinals bugs me. It’s like rooting for Iran and Libya. But since their opponent is North Korea, that’s where I’m at. Good to see Kershaw back tonight.
Although Kershaw perhaps should have faced the Sounds in Nashville tonight. He didn’t look ready for MLB.
Had forgotten he was on the team, I had no recollection of his going on the DL
