Somehow Detwiler managed to hit a batter and give up two hits in the 5th and faced Beltre with the bases loaded without…nah, I didn’t think of any other possibility there. I needed to pee and knew what was going to happen, but stuck around anyway to see how far the ball would go.
how far it will.fly.
Because I can’t deal with this Ross Detwiler business here is a ranking of every joke in Airplane!
Here is the hazard of having a bunch of snot-nosed kids doing this kind of work – I bet they didn’t get the context and/or source of a lot of the jokes. Also, Ronald Reagan was not the governor in 1980.
Still good, though, especially compared to this game.
Edit: How in the FK did they miss the persistent gag of prop-engines sounds from the 707?
the guy in the cab!
The delivery of the Reagan joke remains incredible. So perfectly deadpan.
OMG
!!!!!!
How did I not know about this? I feel so out of touch..
you need to get out and listen to the DVD commentary more.
Well, Detwiler did one significant thing, with that HBP.
I’m a little surprised the Chronicle is paying Slusser’s way on this road trip. Likely it’s the last one this season. (Which by appearances is one more road trip than FK lasted for.)
Pinpoint control to avoid the elbow guard.
He started to swing. And that’s his back hand.
Ah yeah. Good point.
(ouch)
Yay!Boo!44 games to go on the sched, 44 games to go, Beltre’s boss, take a loss, 43 games to go on the sched.Mount Coco finally blows. I’m sorry, but given what he’s provided the A’s compared to the money he’s taken the last few years, I have no sympathy. He gets a buyout payment, he’s a free agent and if one of the other 29 teams thinks he’s worth $13 million in 2017 I’m thrilled for him.
They signed him to the contract. that they don’t let him play is dumb. we all see it, there is no reason for it other than money.
They bought their tickets, they knew what they were getting into.
I say…let em crash.
He’s all over the place! 44 games, up to 93 games…What an asshole!
You both win.
Well, he’s also been below replacement value this year and he’s 36.
There’s a completely valid case for letting the younger guys play to see if they’re worth keeping around or not.
Thanks, and go As.
This is up there with the no slide, Foulkes gopher ball, and Tejada/Byrnes meltdowns for me. I’d basically forgotten he’s on the team anymore after the past couple years. Seeya Coco.
Doolittle drops about 15 years in age without the beard.
ik, r?
This is a tough one. I think I’m mildly on #teamcoco, because Coco is an awesome guy who has been a great A and I don’t like players being benched for money reasons. That said, this kind of contract leads to terrible incentives, and he had to know this was a possibility when he signed it.
what a shitty day.
was ordered to trial even after twice requesting a 130 start so i cold go to the first day of school. CLient had an anxiety attack and had to go to the doctor.
There was a line to sign up for aftercare and we were assured spots. But no conformation came and SLF tried many ways of contacting them without response. finally 25 minutes after school was out, they said there wasn’t enough staff and for “safety reasons” we were waitlisted (the elder just leaves and goes to his library, the younger likes to stay and play).
SLF got there 45 minutes after school ended to find the younger alone, waiting and having been stung by a bee. (slf is alergic, turns out the younger is not)
judge yelled at me and co defendant’s counsel demanding to know what they are thinking. then demanded that I find law tonight that says the city attorney and the DA are the same agency (for no reason whatsoever).
i could say more more but am too tired.
That is truly shitty.
I can’t believe they just left your kid alone. That’s shocking.
my rage has not died.
its made worse by the contentious bidding on the after care program that the principa (who I still have never met or spoken to) insisted on which effectively shut out the aftercare provider from the last 10 years.
I am not sending the email i typed as I think it will get me disbarred.
Just awful.
I’m worried that is my tomorrow. I’ve told the boss I need to leave early since I have no clue if the afterschool program will even be running. LAUSD is the biggest cluster I have ever seen. Went last week to get the schedule and stuff for Lil Miss Aces as she is starting HS. THey said I would need to bring copies of her transcripts (from the LAUSD Jr High she ended last year in). THe Jr high told me straight out that they refuse to give them to me because everything has been sent electornically. I was THIS close to just calling one school and giving the phone to the other and telling them to fight it out while I wait.
Meanwhile I am now ready to fire my entire team at work. It should not be that hard to find people who can handle their current job: sitting at a desk putting on makeup and watching TV while Rome burns…
just got a email to the whole school from the principal.
a bunch of horse shit about how great the community is and how wonderful that more people than ever have signed up for aftercare and how mandatory staffing level may be in place by the end of next week!
its like he didn’t even think that the reason 8 teachers left this year wasn’t because they can’t afford to live here and that maybe the parents might have to work too otherwise they couldn’t live here either.
my question is, since there was only ever 2 teachers per class how is there not 2 for every grade level?
Gosh that sucks. I’m shocked they would leave a kid alone. Unfathomable.
so, what a odd trial.
the issue is a totally unconstitutional civic ordinance. A homeless couple cited for camping and “ordered to vacate park for 24 hours. 23 hours and 58 minutes after the citation, the ranger returned and cited them for failing to heed the order. A Misdemeanor. they were cited 2 more times for failing to stay away.
we filed a constitutional challenge. denied. we said fine. We were now aiming for an appeal after conviction and maybe a con law group would take it on. Judge was personally offended that we were not settling.
He yelled and screamed at us (my co counsel is a true believer, which is good, but you need to know when it is just going to hurt you and your client, no matter how right you are). Co counsel, ignored my advice and opened with an issue that the Judge and perhaps the prosecutor didn’t think of. I really really wanted to spring this on them, with their witness (subpoenaed by us) who they hadn’t intended to call.
just after that, and before my opening the judge called us (dramatically) into the hall and yelled at the three attorneys for making this a circus and there will be NO calling the prosecutor “the government” NO arguing at opening (which is a rule, but we tend to get a little slack).
we all come back in to a silent and staring jury and I begin my opening. I am about done, when I say a sentence, that I hear as I am speaking is an argument. I try to stop, but don’t.
“SIR!! I have addressed this and will not have it!”
I smile broadly and find a friendly juror face. “I understand judge. I heard it too”
after the Prosecutor (a city attorney doing what i imagine is his first real trial) is done with direct on the first witness, it dawns on the judge that one of our defenses is no jurisdiction, which is a legal issue.
he kicks the jury out and orders us to have an evidenciary hearing with the cop that we were going to call. (i have no idea if this was appropriate because it was so fucking weird, I have never heard of such an event). Of course since co counsel had alerted the Opposition of our defense, they were already in process of cleaning up his testimony. The cop came in and changed his statement enough and said he was wrong before that it wasn’t a question of law but a qustion for the jury. Jury comes back in, we continue with the evidence. more arguing at the bench, more telling me how bad I am, more threats.
we stayed late worked some stipulations out.
i get to court today, tired and drained. I run into my boss leaving. I tell him how shitty I felt. He says the judge was raving about me.
we have a couple of witnesses today. I think I did pretty well. as the jury is filing out we get called to the bench again, the judge is muttering that “you are going to win” “this is going to end up an acquittal”
since the two defendants had another case pending they made an offer to dismiss this case and have them plea to one of the other 6 charges in another case, put over sentencing for a year and dismiss at that time if they stay away from the park.
I guess it a win, but I feel so bad about it though.
Evidence of major blowout is really starting to mount.
My inner conspiracy theorist tells me a 9/11-scale terrorist attack would turn that blowout in the other direction. It would take something of that magnitude to fix his problem.
I don’t think even that would do it. It’s pretty clear that people see Clinton as more prepared and better suited temperamentally to handle a crisis. There might be an uptick in muslim-hatred, but not enough to offset Trump’s deep hole in that area.
If he has a chance, it has to be some truly horrible revelation about Clinton. And it’s honestly pretty hard to imagine what that revelation would be at this point, given that people are pricing in their doubts about her honesty and still going for her overwhelmingly because they hate Trump and mostly like Obama.
Hillary killed Vincent Foster with her bare hands because he was about to out her long-running lesbian affair with Huma Abedin, who is also in Isis. Would that do it?
Yawn. Old news.
How about a scary foreign word like Benghazi?!?
Or the Michelle Obama video that’s sure to be released soon…
Calling her “America’s Angela Merkel” is going to be the silver bullet, just you wait.
Hmmm, it appears even Benghazi has its limits.
I KNEW IT!!!!!11!!1
I have 10 very conservative/religious relatives who are Virginia voters. None of them are planning to vote for Trump.
You can add me to that group.
I, too, will NOT be voting for Trump in Virginia.
Thanks, and go As.
And a new summary from Silver.
Beltre remains great.
And yet vince and ken can only talk about his leadership
ISSUE NUMBAH 1
:(
Mort to the left of me, Mort to the right of me, I’M
MORTIFIED!!IN THE MORTUARY!!I used to watch that show with my dad every week. Bob Novak, Jack Germond, and Morton Kondracke were my homeboys.
It tilted pretty far to the right, with Pat Buchanan cast as a calm voice of reason, but it was a palatable way to get a conservative viewpoint on current affairs. It’s still on the air, with recent guest hosts I guess? I probably haven’t watched it since the early to mid 1990s.
Those were the days when right-leaning political discussion didn’t seem like a foreign country to me as a budding liberal. Say what you will about a guy like Novak (the “Prince of Darkness”), but he was a real journalist who clearly got along with a guy like Germond while disagreeing with him on everything.
The advent of the Clinton administration and Fox News quickly changed the game for the worse in terms of conservative television.
WRONG!I loved that show
BYE BYE!!!!!
Extra innings! On a probability scale from zero to 10 — zero meaning zero probability, 10 meaning absolute metaphysical certitude — how likely is it that the A’s will win this game?
Pat Buchanan? “Two.”
Eleanor? “Four.”
Jack Germond? “Two.
Mor-tawn? “Seven.”
Seven? Really? THE ANSWER IS FOUR.
Thank you for this.
Awesome.
its glorious.
and accurate
Germond always knew what was up.
I’m perfectly sane. Everyone else, however, is insane and trying to steal my magic bag.
WRONG!
Maybe he wasn’t the best guy
McGlaughlin was an important part of me coming to understand how the DC “halls of power” milieu is just a mutual dick suck echo chamber irrespective of issue or belief, and have always especially loathed him as that system’s archetype.
Perhaps when Semien comes back, rather than sending Pinder down they will send Ladendorf, whose veteran acumen would be a steadying influence on the Sounds in their postseason run.
The A’s have really jerked the Sounds around on the pitching side but they’ve been more stable on the lineup, especially on the infield. With nothing at stake in Oakland, it’s good affiliate relations, both with ownership and fans, if the A’s minimize the Sept. 1 callups and put the best possible team at Nashville for as long as they go. Phegley and a bullpen arm should do it, though I figure the A’s will trade Rzep somewhere by August 31 and will need a replacement for him as well.
A’s have scored 1 run with 7 LOB in the first 3 innings. Triggs is pitching. This is not likely to be a successful formula.
That’s just simple Triggonometry.
I am brushing up on my sines, cosines and tangents in preparation for home run trajectory calculations.
no need
Yeah, I didn’t expect Triggs’ performance to be the highlight of this one.
I had such a shitty day at trial. i didn’t even turn it off when I realized Triggs was the starter.
Something like 0/8 (+ 4 walks) with RISP now.
I was thinking 12-11 tonight. It still could be, but 1-0 after 5 innings didn’t cross my mind.
this inning is going as well as can be expected
When does Beltre bat
on deck
on deckI mean now
Axforded.
FK you, Axford.
you couldn’t have walked 4?
BoMel is officially desperate.
this seems like a winning strategy
Lol, this team.
Kaboom.
Argh.
I mean…
And with that, I’ll be unable to watch any games live for the next week or so. What a lovely parting gift.
Consider yourself blessed.
LOL A’s
Sound decision making process.
This is probably the dumbest managerial decision I’ve ever seen in baseball. I mean even if the A’s trying to throw the game, I don’t think they would’ve made it this obvious.
The only way this might make sense is if the on deck batter was a pitcher and you’re facing vintage Barry Bonds. Even then, you’re bringing into play so many other factors, anything from a walk to a medium fly ball to a WP to (ding ding ding) a HBP, that leaves you no margin for error.
I can only assume this horrendous roster, the losing, and all the Coco drama has made BoMel lose his mind.
So the head of Breitbart News is now formally running Trump’s campaign while Roger Ailes is advising Trump sub rosa. How much lower can we go here? Where’s the bottom?
Twitch plays “Run for POTUS”
Thanks, and go As.
Make America Gamergate Again
The official Breitbart statement is amazing.
1. He is so confident in Trump’s chances that he plans on resuming his old job on election night.
2. “huge piece of manpower”
Amazing.
ADA: Your client was speeding on hwy 1 at 92 MPH. He was shown on the dashcam passing on the right shoulder, hitting 4 cars. The dashcam also shows him throwing a handgun over the top of the car. the stolen handgun was recovered by another officer and had his fingerprints and DNA on it. He crashed his car into a semi that was parked on the side of the road. he was pinned in the car when officers arrived and there was 14 oz. of heroin on his lap.
me: Says who?
Yup. And he’s puffing out his chest like he won that discussion. The complete and utter obliviousness is astounding. Or would be if he worked for anyone else. Prerequisite for his current employer.
thats 15 more days of service time
This is so icky.
Holy FK.
Although I do think that’s clever to have taller beds with storage underneath. I wish I’d had that.
It is clever, but the little step stools are a tiny bit precious.
They are, but I don’t think I could get on that bed without one!
yeah, me neither
18 to 21 year old Ed did not make it through the night on top of the bed every time.
that’s a hard no
At least the Giants have lost 21 of their last 30.
It’s looking like Giants 2016 = A’s 2014
Also, FK the Giants.
I’d like to say I wouldn’t wish that pain on my worst enemy…but hell yes I would.
I’m still not over that. I’ve had very little baseball interest since. That was an epic gut punch ending with an epic knee to the nut sack followed up with an epic lubeless anal probing.
i hope this runners at third less than 2 outs not scoring is not as bad as it seems.
Our backup infielders (Coghlan, Ladendorf, Alcantara, Muncy) have combined for -2.5 WAR.
It’s enough to make you long for Eric Sogard, who, despite his terrible hitting, was still (somehow) above replacement level.
“a lot of octane”
-vince cotroneo
read that as cocaine.
Thanks, and go As.
vince cocaine?
Standard desultory loss then?
To be honest, Gawker lost me when they kept running that same picture of Jay Cutler’s wife day after day. What the hell was the deal with that, anyway?
is that the 500 days of someone?
Yeah. Every day, the same picture along with some sort of inane story. It was a more annoying and incompehensible inside joke than Deadspin rickrolling people with that picture of the pig pooping.
Now Deadspin has the “The Cardinals lost their nth game” for their running gag of no interest to anyone.
and like my torts professer said in a discussion about a lawsuit putting someone out of business:
So?
If there is money in it, someone else will do it.
Not a lot of barriers to entry here either. Fact is there was a pretty limited audience for what they were offering, as it was always a New York media insidery wankfest (peppered with the occasional very good piece of journalism or essaying). Once Denton was bankrupted, there was really no economic model for keeping the site (as distinct form the other Gawker Media sites) going, I imagine.
I am bothered that petulant billionaires can so easily get their way. I suppose that’s always been truly in every arena, but somehow it happening to a media outlet feels more worrisome.
The real issue is that the big companies get deemed too big to fail and they don’t follow through with that ideology. And they just stick it to the little/mid size guy. If it was done across the board, I’d agree with it. So long as public safety nets were there for the innocent.
Thiel is a bad, bad guy.
He’s gone beyond just bankrupting gawker to now trying to make sure A.J. Daulerio ends up completely destitute.
what a dick. there otta be a law.
I hope the appeal is as strong as gawker says
Yeah that’s some serious deliberate evil there. Though it was 50-50 Daulerio would end up destitute all on his own.
So true.
How have you FKers not linked this beautiful statement yet?
That didn’t make me laugh as much as this did.
I never thought I’d see the phrase plump pooper in the newspaper.
Are you FKing kidding me with this.
Clear jar! Potlucks! Leftovers! Hard limits!
Work as a “hostess” on the side!
Develop an interest in fine wine:
http://www.berkeleyside.com/2016/08/18/premier-cru-owner-used-coffee-shop-as-hook-up-hq/
Woooooow there is a lot to unpack in there.
Setting aside his paying $200,000 *not* to have sex with someone, how did he manage to fail to deliver $45 million worth of wine??
According to some earlier stories, the full amount of liabilities minus assets was actually something like $70M. The short answer is that it was basically a Ponzi scheme that a) was mostly based on wine futures (i.e. I will gladly pay you today for a bottle of Bordeaux in 2021) which weren’t expected to be delivered immediately anyway; and b) he managed to keep going for an impressive amount of time.
Still, I haven’t seen anything that really makes sense of where all the money ended up. They say he “embezzled at least $5 million of that money” and also that in some cases they ended up taking a loss on some bottles, paying more for a bottle than he had charged the customer so that he could actually deliver it and keep the scheme going a little longer. That still seems to leave an awful lot of money unaccounted for.
Lol. Article quotes both “MacKenzie Schroeder, our graphic design intern” and “Mackenzie Owens, our licensing intern”. Start paying these Mackenzie’s already!!
The Clan MacKenzie rises again!
(Where my Outlander people at?)
The 538 polls-only forecast (86.2%) and nowcast (87%) have nearly converged. Also, polls-only thinks she’s favored to win Arizona on November 8, while the nowcast thinks Trump would be favored to win it today.
That model is weird as hell.
Was there a purpose to calling up Pinder and not playing him? Have fun with the Max Muncy show at 2nd, Kendall.
LOL at “we didn’t have much to work with.”
Sick burn on the faces of your franchise, A’s! Good one!
