    Clever work by Strailey to grow a mustache and change his entire delivery, but he is not fooling me any longer.

    So the Rangers want a replacement for their 1994-vintage ballpark … is the threaten-to-leave blackmail period really down to 20 years now?

      This is the Braves’ 20th and final season in Turner Field, and the Diamondbacks are making noise about wanting a new place. There have been some NBA arena replacements after 20 or so years (Miami, Orlando) and the total rebuild of the Coliseum Arena only kept the Warriors happy for about that span.

      He really hasn’t been good this year, and it would behoove them to dump him on a team that hasn’t realized that yet. I doubt such a team exists however.

        Sounds like there’s a glut of relievers on the market also.

          Chapman is way better than Madson, of course. But the Yankees got an absolute haul for him. So it’s definitely a seller’s market, at least at the top end.

    • mother pucker Jul 26,2016 7:18 pm || Up

      I apologize if it was already brought up, but has it been discussed in here that Madson has publicly endorsed Trump?

      • Glorious Mundy Jul 26,2016 7:20 pm || Up

        “I think the media has spun it in a way to make him look like he’s anti-immigrant, so I think it’s more their fault and how they’ve made him look than what he’s trying to do,’’ Madson said. “I don’t think he’s doing it in a way to be a Zionist. He’s not trying to seal us off from the world. He’s trying to just slow down or stop as much as he can what’s been happening here in America with the terrorists.’’

            I’m struggling to see how. If it had come from someone else, sure, but she’s a famously inappropriate yet lovable comedian who supported Bernie. Anyone so offended by that that it would make them not turn up or vote for someone other than Hillary was probably a lost cause anyway.

    Between Madson (3.77 ERA/4.67 FIP), Axford (4.95 ERA/4.27 FIP), and Hendriks (4.91 ERA/3.59 FIP), all that investment into overhauling Team Dynamite doesn’t seem to have paid much dividends.

                I agree with this. Was very happy that Bill’s speech was about their personal history, not laying out what he thinks Hillary should do the white house. I also think that the long details of Hillary’s community work will help with Berners who maybe never realized that Hillary was once a bright-eyed, idealistic outsider.

    if the team was constituted the same today as it is today*, I get the feeling that they would win more games from here on out to the end of the season than the giants.

            Yeah, and I’ll bet only 2-3 teams behind in the WC, rather than 8 or so like today.

            I know it isn’t 2012. Maybe if it was late June and we kept up the pace of the last week or 2. But the calendar tells us not this year. But the feeling I have had is the same. Just enjoy the ride, but the little voice says “what if?”

      Rich Hill’s failure to pitch is really putting a damper on it. And I’m holding out hope that the A’s will keep Reddick and sign him to a deal this offseason. They better be shopping Madsen hard though.

      He is self destructing in a rather remarkable way. That was far from the only insane thing he said in that presser. There must be a clinical explanation for someone who would rather publicly shame himself than allow the attention to be off of him for a few days.

      • MikeV Jul 27,2016 10:40 am || Up

        Well he says insane shit all the time, but has a presidential candidate ever openly asked a foreign nation to commit espionage?

          I mean, the guy lies and transparently changes his positions and stances constantly, but he has been very consistent both in praising Putin as a great leader and putting forward pro-Russia FP policies that are way outside the mainstream of both parties. And now this. He is transparently advocating for Russia, he is asking for them to intervene on his behalf in our election, and he is quite possibly dependent on Russia for his personal financial business but won’t even make his tax returns public.

          It would, to borrow a phrase, be “irresponsible not to speculate.”

        Not really sure I want debates. The psychos who are voting for Donald won’t be swayed. Those who aren’t going to vote for Hillary won’t have their minds changed. She’s too much of a known entity in U.S. politics for that to happen. People’s minds are already made up on both of them. And worse, the only thing that can happen is she can say something that’ll turn off of people that would vote for her. And we know he can’t say anything to turn off his supporters. The best that can happen is the status quo is maintained.

        • Glorious Mundy Jul 29,2016 9:52 am || Up

          On the one hand, debates should be the chance for him to gain ground. On the other hand, he’s a lazy idiot with no self control who won’t be able to — and won’t even try to — properly prepare.

          Debates are the one moment for her to get directly in his face. She will absolutely humiliate him. Yes, he’ll never lose his core of racists, but there will still be plenty of room for him to collapse as she exposes his absolute ignorance. She should not be underestimated in hand-to-hand combat where mastery of details is at a premium.

              Look, I am very worried about him and all he represents. This shit is keeping me up at night, tbh. If the race remains close until the end, it will probably have serious negative effects on my health.

              I would be a lot more worried, though, if he weren’t running such a terrible, cheap, understaffed campaign, and if he had even a modicum of self discipline or ability to learn. I also think that Clinton is a lot better at this stuff than people give her credit for.

              In the end, I think the strong likelihood is that she wins pretty big as normal, non-political people get serious about this thing in September/October.

                yes to all that. my worry is that he’s gotten this far despite the logical, rational, baseline-sensical reasons we all already knew he shouldn’t have gotten this far over.

                  He’s gotten this far because the GOP is fundamentally broken and ideologically adrift. The parallel crumbling of the Ailes empire is instructive here. It was always a fairly natural endpoint for the party that has rejected expertise as a liberal plot and stirred up racial resentment as a cynical tool to support their economic and foreign policy agenda to end up nominating someone who did that even better than they do. But, as Bill James said, eventually you run out of idiots.

          • dmoas Jul 29,2016 12:57 pm || Up

            He’s already exposed his absolute ignorance. Seriously, you literally can’t make a bigger show of his complete and utter ignorance than he already has. And his supporters literally don’t give a shit. They relish in it. And doing so face to face against Hillary won’t make a difference. At best nothing comes of it. At worst she gets labelled a “bully” and people get turned off by her.

            • Glorious Mundy Jul 29,2016 1:05 pm || Up

              Anyone who has been paying close attention has been exposed to his ignorance, but that doesn’t include a lot of people who will vote in November. There are plenty of people who I would imagine are still telling pollsters they will vote for Trump just because he has an R next to his name, the Rs are their usual team, they are vaguely aware that the Rs rallied around him last week, and Fox News and the radio show their boss listens to at work seem to think he’s a good idea.

              Bottom line is that the “his supporters won’t give a shit” argument that I keep hearing ignores that he doesn’t currently have enough supporters to win the election. They key is to make sure he doesn’t amass them, and Clinton slapping him around on every network is a good way to do that.

              The idea that anyone will get labeled a bully for taking *Trump* — the ultimate bully — apart doesn’t scan for me. She will probably get labeled a bitch, but wtf else is new.

            • nevermoor Jul 29,2016 2:25 pm || Up

              Yeah, but his supporters don’t have enough votes. They need to convince others to switch or stay home.

              The debates should help avoid that (like the DNC just did)

                  Prior to 1970, the NFL was Sunday afternoon only.

                  In 1970, Monday nights were added.

                  In 1987, Sunday nights were added for ESPN. Initially that was only after baseball’s postseason ended, but by 1990 TNT picked up Sunday nights for the first half of the season and eventually ESPN took TNT’s games.

                  In 1995 baseball added to the October congestion by adding an additional round of postseason.

                  In 2006 a limited package of Thursday night games was started as programming for NFL Network. These were also initially late-season only, becoming full-season in 2012. 2006 was also the year NBC started its Sunday night package and usually grabs a lot of premium games.

                  There were also occasional games on Thursdays (not counting the Thanksgiving games) every season from 1978-1986 and from 1990-2005. For a while these were called “Monday Night Football, Thursday Night Edition.”

      Ting rides on Sprint’s network, so you may have coverage issues there.

      As much as I really can’t stand the “pay for usage” model of data, if you don’t use a high amount of data per month (say, under 2-3GB) it’s kinda hard to beat Google Fi, aside from having to pay full price for a phone up front.

      T-Mobile is also a pretty good deal when you consider their anti-net neutrality free data on stuff like Pandora, Youtube, etc etc.

      Also, single line plan or the whole family? I’m sure the boys are about ready for Pokemon Go or something :D

      And I have to say: mikev is one of my favorite people on here -slusser.

        for right now its just SLF and I. I expect the elder to have a phone next calendar year. (pokemon is on my phone which is fine, controls their usage. Its cool having them walk 5 miles without knowing it)

        I am a data pig. I listen on my commute. it looks like between 4 and 7 GB.

        my current plan is unlimited data and (surprising!) the carrier is being a dick about it. I can’t upgrade phones without changing!

        anyway the ting calculator says that I will spend about $50 a month plus tax which sounds crazy to me. I am on a sprint network right now, I do have coverage problems, but nothing I can’t live with.

        I will look at this google fi thing now.

              They’re running a 4 line promo right now for $30/line.

              The caveat with this (and, frankly, all the other carriers too now) is that they push that wacky monthly phone financing thing REALLY hard. The subsidized phone thing is going the way of the dodo, but you can get some really good devices outright for 150 bucks from Amazon or other places.
