Clever work by Strailey to grow a mustache and change his entire delivery, but he is not fooling me any longer.
So the Rangers want a replacement for their 1994-vintage ballpark … is the threaten-to-leave blackmail period really down to 20 years now?
This is the Braves’ 20th and final season in Turner Field, and the Diamondbacks are making noise about wanting a new place. There have been some NBA arena replacements after 20 or so years (Miami, Orlando) and the total rebuild of the Coliseum Arena only kept the Warriors happy for about that span.
Such an obscene scam.
FK you, Madson
FK you Beltre
(yeah, him too)
can’t be mad at that guy
Solid reaction by Fosse, though.
haven’t we traded madson yet?
He really hasn’t been good this year, and it would behoove them to dump him on a team that hasn’t realized that yet. I doubt such a team exists however.
Sounds like there’s a glut of relievers on the market also.
Chapman is way better than Madson, of course. But the Yankees got an absolute haul for him. So it’s definitely a seller’s market, at least at the top end.
I apologize if it was already brought up, but has it been discussed in here that Madson has publicly endorsed Trump?
Wat
orange county, right?
Riverside
just as gross
“Don’t listen to his words, listen to what I hope he means instead.”
This is also how I choose to interpret the words of Billy Beane.
sorry i couldn’t comment more on the game, I wa cutting onions in a rainstorm during Michelle obama’s speech
Right?
I love her.
Booker and Bernie were grade A too.
Three best of convention season so far.
And Sarah Silverman! I loved Cory Booker’s as well.
I think Silverman will turn out to be a bad sound bite, but we’ll see.
The intent was good. But yeah, I don’t see that one helping.
I’m struggling to see how. If it had come from someone else, sure, but she’s a famously inappropriate yet lovable comedian who supported Bernie. Anyone so offended by that that it would make them not turn up or vote for someone other than Hillary was probably a lost cause anyway.
This was totally my reaction.
*and* I felt like she was one of the few people (on a very short list) who could put it out there so boldly and not have it completly backfire.
Between Madson (3.77 ERA/4.67 FIP), Axford (4.95 ERA/4.27 FIP), and Hendriks (4.91 ERA/3.59 FIP), all that investment into overhauling Team Dynamite doesn’t seem to have paid much dividends.
I think you have forgotten just how bad TD was.
Uh, Vince? You OK buddy?
Coco!
Don’t Rougned on Reddick.
oh, sonny. stop being AJ griffin
Good God, Sonny, could you stop sucking, please?
bill could have done better
I liked it.
it was better than the other spouse this term (no snark). but he is a president, I wanted more policy.
Yeah, part of me was hoping for something like the speech he gave four years ago, but that wasn’t his role here. I presume that Biden and Obama will be giving that speech this time around.
see, I can’t see them doing that. she should have a break from obama policy.
I thought for a sec Albright was going to do it, but she didn’t either.
I I think H.R. Clinton is going to have to. Probably best anyway
Yeah, I just don’t think it works for Bill to be the one laying out her policy agenda. She’s got to stand on her own there (with a lot of help from Kaine).
who?
I agree with this. Was very happy that Bill’s speech was about their personal history, not laying out what he thinks Hillary should do the white house. I also think that the long details of Hillary’s community work will help with Berners who maybe never realized that Hillary was once a bright-eyed, idealistic outsider.
2016 Sonny: A riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside a guy somehow letting the 8 and 9 lineup spots hit .450 against.
Doolittle is such a boy.
That is adorable.
I’d love to see Bruce Campbell wield that Boom Stick.
(no, that’s not what she said)
W00t!
never in doubt
Really a nice job by not-Jimi and Eyechart.
if the team was constituted the same today as it is today*, I get the feeling that they would win more games from here on out to the end of the season than the giants.
giants have 58(almost 59) wins and the a’s have 46.
*meaning not trading reddick and hill
Agreed. I keep reminding myself that they arent that good and just enjoy this little ride while its going.
But I also said that through most of 2012 too.
That 2012 team was 55-46 and only 4.5 games out at this point.
Yeah – upticks aside, this is a 1997-bad team.
Yeah, and I’ll bet only 2-3 teams behind in the WC, rather than 8 or so like today.
I know it isn’t 2012. Maybe if it was late June and we kept up the pace of the last week or 2. But the calendar tells us not this year. But the feeling I have had is the same. Just enjoy the ride, but the little voice says “what if?”
Just me, or have there been curiously few trade rumors swirling around this team so far? I admittedly haven’t been paying the closest attention.
Rich Hill’s failure to pitch is really putting a damper on it. And I’m holding out hope that the A’s will keep Reddick and sign him to a deal this offseason. They better be shopping Madsen hard though.
You… you can’t be serious right now, can you?
“Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,†Mr. Trump said, staring directly into the cameras. “I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.â€
Thanks, and go As.
He is self destructing in a rather remarkable way. That was far from the only insane thing he said in that presser. There must be a clinical explanation for someone who would rather publicly shame himself than allow the attention to be off of him for a few days.
Well he says insane shit all the time, but has a presidential candidate ever openly asked a foreign nation to commit espionage?
That’s treason.
Thanks, and go As.
I mean, the guy lies and transparently changes his positions and stances constantly, but he has been very consistent both in praising Putin as a great leader and putting forward pro-Russia FP policies that are way outside the mainstream of both parties. And now this. He is transparently advocating for Russia, he is asking for them to intervene on his behalf in our election, and he is quite possibly dependent on Russia for his personal financial business but won’t even make his tax returns public.
It would, to borrow a phrase, be “irresponsible not to speculate.”
He’s senile. His old man died of Alzheimer’s so it’s not out of the question. And just listening to him, it’s hard not to think he’s not. He’s also an egomaniacal asshole too. So he’s got that all going for him. I feel bad for the Secret Service Agents that have to protect him. Can you imagine being asked to potentially give your life for him? Fuck that shit.
And/or he’s still a heavy user of amphetamines.
that said, it won’t do a damn thing to hurt him
I feel like he really doesn’t want to actually win. He just wants to get close enough to say “I would have won if the system wasn’t rigged” I’m the best, I would have been the best president in history, blah blah. But not have to do the actual job. You know, cause it’s hard work and all.
He doesn’t want to be president. He wants to be called president.
Thanks, and go As.
Yup. If he were elected, he wouldn’t do a damn bit of the job itself. He’d outsource it. Probably to Putin.
He’s just opening up an important discussion on the use-mention distinction.
i can’t go there yet. i’m still stuck on the washington post transcribing jibe as jive.
Wait, are you sure which one he said? Dude ain’t got no brains anyhow.
sheeeeiiiiiit.
My man Pence needs to just take the L here and walk away with what’s left of his dignity.
Trump’s conflation of HRC’s personal emails with the DNC hack is pretty clever – now she gave secrets to the Russians.
RIP Jack Davis. The MAD one, not the SF one.

Good start.
not for nothing, but I am happy that ken didn’t say “and that quickly the rangers are on top”
because it wasn’t quick
Tim Kaine–unimpressive
who?
All I know, is whoever is speaking now has terrible rhythm on “si se puede”
Bernie seemed conspicuously unmoved by Tim Kaine’s shoutouts.
Isn’t this the night that the VP is supposed to speak? when is that happening?
Not a great orator, but comforting and likeable and earnest as hell. I think he’s an asset, especially in smaller settings. Suburban women will eat him up, and the Spanish is nice.
if I knew who you were talking about I would agree with you. this guy isn’t about you or me, its about soccer moms
I actually really like him.
I thought he ended well. hit the Marine son thing, he was OK
not a great attack dog, but hopefully Warren and biden will take over
He did get better. The “trust me” line could stick.
Just not a charismatic orator, and has nothing on Booker/Michelle/etc. That said, Warren wasn’t great either and I love her to death.
Needs work on his Trump impression
i think a bad one is funnier
You’re probably right about that
#JonStewart
but then again, I am not his target audience
Khrushed!!!
good lord.
never in doubt, a yuge save. nice comeback for john rocker
9-4 in the Smolinski Healy Era.
Yes, it’s become at least interesting to check in on games periodically, which wasn’t the case earlier in the year.
that white kid sounded 22.
fucking dick
thx obama
he is always pitch perfect.
not the speech of the convention, but the best one he could deliver
I think his speech will do more to secure liberals AND moderates than anyone else’s I’ve heard.
Dude is probably the best president I’ll ever vote for.
Probably more than a few mainline Republicans too. He claimed the patriotic mantle of Reagan, and he took not a single shot at the Republican Party or conservatism generally, just at the “homegrown demagogue” they are saddled with as their nominee.
Yeah. I’m still buzzing.
I had it on ABC, could the rest of you hear the TPP dicks?
No. I was on the youtube feed.
whitest collegest straitest dick started chanting “NO. TPP.” Got a few to join, but jeebus, what a dick
That shit is really starting to piss me off.
i am going to grab my copy of No logo by naomi klien, cross off all the dates, and update the names to be facebook and twitter and start selling it t all these dweebs and make THOUSANDS of dollars.
Holy crap, did anyone else see this? Weirdest thing I’ve ever seen in the sky first hand.
It’s really bad up there, and (as you observe) very little of it burns up like this. We’re in danger of losing near-earth orbits to killer debris. We can track the big stuff, but at the speed things are moving it doesn’t have to be big to be lethal, and there are a *lot* of little bits.
uhg. they have to ruin the moment with the USA chant.
that “you have sacrificed nothing” line has a chance to bury trump, but its getting lost
Nothing got lost. That was powerful as hell.
wow, trump is finding a way to let them destroy him
While also confirming the central premise of Hill’s critique of him in her speech. He is who we thought he was.
it’s so baffling. no sane person does this. he really can’t help himself
The sad thing is that she wont win by 30 points
I could see her winning by 15-20 though, with a huge protest vote for the libertarians. Something like 52-35-13.
Trump saying that Khan had “no right” to say Trump hadn’t read the constitution is one of the all time great self-owns.
The greatest comedians in the world couldn’t come up with something that concisely brilliant.
Pfft. We already knew he had no understanding of the 1st Amendment. Religion? Check. Press? Check. People? Check. “I’ve read the Constitution. Those Amendment things weren’t in it. They’re optional.”
All but the 2nd – that’s sacrosanct.
That’s why they put it second. It plays the game the right way and can always get a bunt down.
The grittiest of all amendments.
Trump should have said he never sacrificed because he doesn’t like to give away outs.
own own?
On the other hand, not sure we need a full Super Bowl halftime show here. Maybe it draws millennial eyeballs.
i was listening to NPR/Newshour. The republican guy said he was betting perry would sing ROAR.
and he was nice and wrong like always
ORLY?
It seemed like the “USA USA’s” were an attempt to drown out the “no more war” chants.
that makes sense.
stupid california bernie bros
Hillary was much better than I expected. No Donald, you don’t.
she was.
now for the bounce and hopefully debates. I just hope trump actually does them
Not really sure I want debates. The psychos who are voting for Donald won’t be swayed. Those who aren’t going to vote for Hillary won’t have their minds changed. She’s too much of a known entity in U.S. politics for that to happen. People’s minds are already made up on both of them. And worse, the only thing that can happen is she can say something that’ll turn off of people that would vote for her. And we know he can’t say anything to turn off his supporters. The best that can happen is the status quo is maintained.
On the one hand, debates should be the chance for him to gain ground. On the other hand, he’s a lazy idiot with no self control who won’t be able to — and won’t even try to — properly prepare.
Debates are the one moment for her to get directly in his face. She will absolutely humiliate him. Yes, he’ll never lose his core of racists, but there will still be plenty of room for him to collapse as she exposes his absolute ignorance. She should not be underestimated in hand-to-hand combat where mastery of details is at a premium.
i want to borrow maybe even an ounce or two of that bemused confidence you seem to exhibit about this whole thing. i don’t doubt you’re right and things will turn out like this. but i’m not *feeling* that doubtlessness.
Look, I am very worried about him and all he represents. This shit is keeping me up at night, tbh. If the race remains close until the end, it will probably have serious negative effects on my health.
I would be a lot more worried, though, if he weren’t running such a terrible, cheap, understaffed campaign, and if he had even a modicum of self discipline or ability to learn. I also think that Clinton is a lot better at this stuff than people give her credit for.
In the end, I think the strong likelihood is that she wins pretty big as normal, non-political people get serious about this thing in September/October.
yes to all that. my worry is that he’s gotten this far despite the logical, rational, baseline-sensical reasons we all already knew he shouldn’t have gotten this far over.
He’s gotten this far because the GOP is fundamentally broken and ideologically adrift. The parallel crumbling of the Ailes empire is instructive here. It was always a fairly natural endpoint for the party that has rejected expertise as a liberal plot and stirred up racial resentment as a cynical tool to support their economic and foreign policy agenda to end up nominating someone who did that even better than they do. But, as Bill James said, eventually you run out of idiots.
yep. logical. sensical. totally on board with you.
and yet: russians. hacking. ELECTRONIC VOTING MACHINES.
Also, I feel like I would be cheating myself if I lost sight of how FKing funny it is the way Trump has taken a dump all over the GOP. We should take the threat he poses to democracy and decency very seriously, but we should never stop mocking him and the craven Republicans who have enabled him.
Even he already knows what’s coming.
He’s going to be pre-spinning his loss as illegitimate, which is why it is crucial that he be maximally crushed even in places like California, to run up the popular vote margin.
ha! i saw your other comment before this one.
Sad!
So doesn’t that mean there is a way for that loss to “Take care itself” since it’s not legitimate?
Thanks, and go As.
Seriously, when these reasonable Republicans act like Trump winning their nomination is some kind of black swan, they should be reminded of the cavalcade of nutcases they have nominated at state level since Obama’s election.
He’s already exposed his absolute ignorance. Seriously, you literally can’t make a bigger show of his complete and utter ignorance than he already has. And his supporters literally don’t give a shit. They relish in it. And doing so face to face against Hillary won’t make a difference. At best nothing comes of it. At worst she gets labelled a “bully” and people get turned off by her.
Anyone who has been paying close attention has been exposed to his ignorance, but that doesn’t include a lot of people who will vote in November. There are plenty of people who I would imagine are still telling pollsters they will vote for Trump just because he has an R next to his name, the Rs are their usual team, they are vaguely aware that the Rs rallied around him last week, and Fox News and the radio show their boss listens to at work seem to think he’s a good idea.
Bottom line is that the “his supporters won’t give a shit” argument that I keep hearing ignores that he doesn’t currently have enough supporters to win the election. They key is to make sure he doesn’t amass them, and Clinton slapping him around on every network is a good way to do that.
The idea that anyone will get labeled a bully for taking *Trump* — the ultimate bully — apart doesn’t scan for me. She will probably get labeled a bitch, but wtf else is new.
Yeah, but his supporters don’t have enough votes. They need to convince others to switch or stay home.
The debates should help avoid that (like the DNC just did)
I honestly think he will find a way to duck them. I’m just trying to figure out what his excuse will be. My money is currently on him saying that he refuses to debate unless Jill Stein is also there.
Maybe. We’ll see.
It’ll be interesting to me to see where he crosses the line into “yeah, he’s just nuts” territory. For Carson it was the pyramids. It doesn’t sound like tax returns will be it for Trump.
It begins…
To be fair, he does have experience in trying to compete with the NFL.
hey-o
is this how he is going to negotiate? is this in art of the deal?
Ummmm…note that the date on the article is Sept. 23, 2015.
Hillary already had access to the 2016 NFL schedule! Her crookedness knows no bounds…
Falcons at Saints…eh
Giants at Packers, maybe
If NBC didn’t want to carry football instead of the debate, the NFL would not have put that NYG-GB game in that time slot. Obviously NBC and the NFL had exactly that discussion when the schedule was being put together.
Looking back a bit…
Third Obama-Romney debate was up against the Lions and Bears on a Monday
None of the Obama-McCain or Bush-Kerry debates were on NFL nights
Definitely a strange decision to put two up against the shield, especially when you lose a network for one.
did the NFL have games on more than 2 days in a week in 2008?
when did they start to creep into thursdays and tuesddays and shit?
I think the Thursday games used only start halfway through the season back then? Or some such nonsense?
Prior to 1970, the NFL was Sunday afternoon only.
In 1970, Monday nights were added.
In 1987, Sunday nights were added for ESPN. Initially that was only after baseball’s postseason ended, but by 1990 TNT picked up Sunday nights for the first half of the season and eventually ESPN took TNT’s games.
In 1995 baseball added to the October congestion by adding an additional round of postseason.
In 2006 a limited package of Thursday night games was started as programming for NFL Network. These were also initially late-season only, becoming full-season in 2012. 2006 was also the year NBC started its Sunday night package and usually grabs a lot of premium games.
There were also occasional games on Thursdays (not counting the Thanksgiving games) every season from 1978-1986 and from 1990-2005. For a while these were called “Monday Night Football, Thursday Night Edition.”
LOL, Trump is on TV claiming the NFL sent him a letter complaining about the debate schedule.
He was lying, of course.
Third debate of 1992 would have been up against the seventh game of the ALCS! Alas…
Bob Dole was great.
That Jackie Kennedy line about “small men” was also a solid poke.
Yep. And the tweet thing is perfect because it works both for those who understand twitter and those who don’t.
Of course.
Worst trade chip ever.
But on the bright side we wont trade him and once the blister heals it will be like getting an ace after the deadline!!!
you know, the more i think about it, the more i dislike rajai davis. not the person. he seems nice. but there is never a time he isn’t a problem for the A’s
Not his fault Semien can’t make a routine play.
not according to vince
Yeah, well.
mike v signal:
I am going to get new mobile service, considering ting. discuss
Interesting…
Ting rides on Sprint’s network, so you may have coverage issues there.
As much as I really can’t stand the “pay for usage” model of data, if you don’t use a high amount of data per month (say, under 2-3GB) it’s kinda hard to beat Google Fi, aside from having to pay full price for a phone up front.
T-Mobile is also a pretty good deal when you consider their anti-net neutrality free data on stuff like Pandora, Youtube, etc etc.
Also, single line plan or the whole family? I’m sure the boys are about ready for Pokemon Go or something :D
Thanks, and go As.
for right now its just SLF and I. I expect the elder to have a phone next calendar year. (pokemon is on my phone which is fine, controls their usage. Its cool having them walk 5 miles without knowing it)
I am a data pig. I listen on my commute. it looks like between 4 and 7 GB.
my current plan is unlimited data and (surprising!) the carrier is being a dick about it. I can’t upgrade phones without changing!
anyway the ting calculator says that I will spend about $50 a month plus tax which sounds crazy to me. I am on a sprint network right now, I do have coverage problems, but nothing I can’t live with.
I will look at this google fi thing now.
2 lines, it’s hard to beat TMobile right now.
$100/month for 2 lines, each gets 6GB data, plus all the free streaming crap that doesn’t count against your data allotment.
Thanks, and go As.
That is really good. Out of curisoity, if it was 4 lines what does it look like? Once I took into account the free stuff T-Mobile does it may be an Aces no brainer.
They’re running a 4 line promo right now for $30/line.
The caveat with this (and, frankly, all the other carriers too now) is that they push that wacky monthly phone financing thing REALLY hard. The subsidized phone thing is going the way of the dodo, but you can get some really good devices outright for 150 bucks from Amazon or other places.
Thanks, and go As.
yeah, the one thing I have learned is that im pretty ok with being a model or so behind.
The 4th Gen Motorola Moto G is $150 on Amazon right now, which is a fantastic deal.
Thanks, and go As.
I really like my (3rd gen) Moto G.
yeah my son has an older 2nd gen one. Really good phones. 150 for the 4th gen is a steal
Thanks, and go As.
… for Brett Anderson.
Reddick deserves to play on a major league team
