You have to be a diehard A’s fan, or really hate the NBA, to tune in to tonight’s outdoor event in Oakland. Since I qualify under both counts, I’ll host this one.
Crisp CF, Semien SS, Valencia 3B, Davis LF, Butler DH, Phegley C, Smolinski RF, Alonso 1B, Ladendorf 2B. Manaea P.
That was a long travel day, with a bonus hour in the Las Vegas airport thanks to Southwest Airlines which gave me a chance to spend $12 on a Samuel Adams. Vegas is the worst beer town in America. The “Brewery District” at Great American Ballpark was pretty good, about a dozen Ohio/Kentucky microbrews and another dozen from elsewhere (e.g. Bell’s Oberon, Deschutes Fresh Squeezed), a much better selection than the self-proclaimed Beer Capital in Milwaukee (it’s actually just the Miller Lite Capital).
i’ll be there
Hahn in AAA: 4 IP so far, 2 K, 7 BB. Yikes.
The major positive thing the A’s could accomplish the rest of the season is seeing what they have among Graveman, Hahn, Manaea and Mengden, and maybe others to be acquired in trade. Hahn is making his part of it easy. I’m not clear how much of it is being in the Beane/Forst/Melvin doghouse, possibly due to mouthing off or other attitude issues, but my sense is he’d rather get a fresh start somewhere else.

A’s have a ridiculous amount of work to do with Puk. Couldn’t finish the 4th in his start today and couldn’t throw a strike to save his life.
Indeed. That’s been his MO all season, which is why he dropped to them at #6. Had he been effective and working deeper into games he would have gone #1.
mlb.com always plays the non a’s feed, no matter where the game is
Manaea seems Andersonesque with the glove.
Miller Park, Coors Field, Busch Stadium. I imagine they all maintain Company Store policies about beer sales.
Yes, the other prominent brand at Miller Park was Leinenkugel’s, which is Miller’s faux craft brand.
Three LHPs starting for the Rangers in this series. That’s actually good for Oakland right now.
31 runs (6, 14, 6, and 5) in the 4 games against lefty starters. And still managed to lose two of them.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled offensive ineptitude.
that wasn’t good defense
coco 5-9 stealing
set up nicely for butler
Or Phegley.
Not sure why he is hitting ahead of Smolinski.
So of course Phegley goes up hacking at non strikes right after a walk. Honestly they deserve to lose games.
butter flaps wings, but that is a dp too
A fine entry into the Putin photo contest:
With him involved a leather-clad biker gang musical doesn’t sound gay at all.
nice socks tyler
i like how the warriors didn’t care that they clevland was on a power play
That was amusing. Less so now.
nice trick shot
way to go sean
khrush davis
ha1
with butler on 1st and a single to left center, rua grapped tbe ball and spun like he was going to have to throw to third
3 DPs in 3 innings. This is more compelling than another no-hitter.
The roar has gone out of Roaracle.
Edit: Also, FK you, LBJ
Oh, FK everything.
rubbing the left forearm. no problem there
The drop in velocity reminded me of the AB where AJ Griffin dropped like 10 mph all at once, stil got the out, and was never heard from again.
threw a couple good games for texas before he went back to the dl
Yay 10 runs. Boo not getting to have nice things.
so, fixed?
don’t expect a win next game (whenever that is)
All Cleveland needed was the game of Kyries life, Lebron going off, oh and the Warriors best defensive player and one of their better offensive talents to be suspended.
It’s almost too easy.
Thanks, and go As.
Yeah. If LBJ can go full-heel and hit every single shot then we are in trouble. If not, I think we will be fine.
Funny how Bron and Kyrie just happened to go off on the night Draymond wasn’t available, isn’t it. Things should look pretty different on Thursday.
Yeah, though I don’t think Draymond would have prevented LBJ’s crazy 3-point shooting.
Agree re:Thursday
the thing I really like about fosse is that he knows everyone and the relations between them.
he knew there were 2 interns with the same name
Despite they’re both being interns, there’s no relation.
Had to go to a bar to watch this onslaught. Took some negotiation, but finally got the A’s game on one of the 10 TVs in the place. The others are all on Dubs post game, without volume (sound in here is a classic rock mix, which could be worse).
at the kids birthday party, the place had espn baseball highlights instead of the A’s game.
i fucking hate people
left pronator muscle strain
When do they amputate?
Thanks, and go As.
not till they have him throw a few innings next week
It’s one of those injuries where the pitcher valiantly tries to rehab it for a few weeks, if not months, before resignedly getting TJS.
Glen, even in blowouts you’re terrible.
1. Draymond, man of the people.
2. Infield suites at the Coliseum don’t have their own bathrooms.
I love Oakland so much.
Ed: You’re not the only one.
http://m.sfgate.com/warriors/article/Betting-scandal-ref-says-NBA-suspended-Draymond-8127391.php
It was pretty obvious, no?
So TJS on 7/1?
Holy FK. A’s starter for tonight, Eric Surkamp suuuuuucks. In his mlb career, mostly as a reliever, he sports a 6.45era, he’s averaged more than 11 hits/9 innings. He’s barely walked more guys than he’s struck out and opponents have managed a .902 ops against him.
Sniff Sniff. I smell a perfect game coming on… Probably a perfectly bad game. But perfect none the less.
I’m at the point that we need to just start a greatest hits rotation.
Go buy Tommy Milone.
And for God’s sake get Travis out of Mexico, there is no way he is worse than this sheeyat.
Is Zito throwing
It’s OK, Surkamp can allow a run per inning so long as we hit like we did last night. No problem.
“A run per inning”, LOL.
Davis vs. the Rangers, through that first AB: .571/.611/1.714
Surkamp literally hung his head in shame after he watched that meatball get hit.
Shame
Shame
Shame
(rings the Shame Bell)
Please let that be Surkamp’s final pitch as an Oakland Athletic.
Dear Mr Surkamp,
Please go away and don’t come back.
Sincerely, all A’s fans past and present.
I’m a magnanimous guy. He can be the bullpen catcher at the next Old Timer’s Game.
Man, Eric Surkamp suuuuuucks.
Michael Ynoa pitched two scoreless innings tonight.
In the majors.
Call him up!
can’t miss!
Not dead yet!
Dead now, though.
For a second I couldn’t tell if this was a reply about Ynoa or the game.
Guess it really fits both, though for poor Michael it is longer lasting.
Shooty: Defensively, we don’t know this team’s identity yet.
Yeah, we do.
a defense has no name
Thanks, and go As.
Oh it has a name. And, like name, it’s 4 letters long.
so 4 out or 5 out inning?
Depends if you assume the double play.
i know they don’t when the “score” the game, but I generally do, but then again, this team…
jed would be better at baseball if he had more situatuional awaeness
Wow, Sonny has the 2nd best career starter’s ERA vs Texas ever, trailing only Pedro.
ok guys, I am back to 2 layers on my rubicks cube. this is where I fuck it up
there is a ight handed bench player with 3 home runs
could have saved yourself 6 pitches by walking him earlier
i call a k with 1st and 2nd 1 out is a good ab for alanso
Don’t forget to always hate Doug Brocail.
can we just pay the rangers?
If the A’s hold on to win this one, it would be the 2nd time in the last 48 games that Gray has started and the A’s have won. Which they might have been able to survive if Hahn and Graveman were battling it out for the Cy Young.
what the hell, sonny?
A lot of pitches up, same as before the DL stint…
just like toronto
5-5? We’re in a truck.
decent call by vince. credit where due. although i don’t need to point out its texas
wait, what happened to the bottom of the 7th?
did we waive it?
sigh
Back in the day we would have had a filibuster thread.
OK, so 1 win started by Sonny in the last 48. Man, if they couldn’t win that one, the bottom is a long, long way down there.
I guess I picked the right week to go to Shetland.
i like this mengden guy
“12 in a row to start the game retired by lewis”
I think vince’s brain needs a defrag
i mean, it goes without saying that colby lewis has a perfect game through 5
6
I despise him.
7
You guys weren’t kidding about Mengden’s sweet throwback look. I feel like I’m watching Rick Langford or something.
The little hitch in his windup where he cocks the glove a second time is mesmerizing.
Daniel, you have to be perfect to win.
game over
stick that plastic guard out there, ryan
Colby FKing Lewis?
Max FKing Muncy!
Irrelevant question: Why does Gameday call the second run charged to Mengden an earned run when the guy who scored was on base due to an error?
Gameday is only showing 1 ER now for Mengden.
I guess someone else asked the same question.
vince called elvis’ look as a “glare”
watching it, it was more bemused
I have no threats to make about what I’ll do if the A’s get perfecto’ed. I’m already paying less attention and attending fewer games than I have in years. But I will be disgusted. Fuck Colby Lewis.
I’m almost rooting for it just so that the national press will spend a little time rubbing Forst and Beane’s noses in the pile of poop they made
Nothing in the Geren years approached this level of unwatchability because those teams had at least a little pitching. This is more like 1997 minus McGwire’s home run power (until he was dealt at the deadline that year).
Are they actually trying to make it easy for him?
i don’t know why vince is lobbyying for dull. he should know ned yost will be able to picj ryan madson (a player that helped him to the world series)
should be out forssliding at first
That was weird. He would have been safe by much more standing up.
would have saved us a lot of time
Shrewd strategy here to draw out this half inning in hopes that Lewis will get bored and forget he’s even pitching today.
Eyechart would’ve been welcome last year as part of Team Dynamite.
still lives in bakersfield?
Hey, did you guys notice that Colby Lewis was pitching a PERFECT GAME?
not anymore
Yes, you’re welcome.
Hey, did you guys notice that Colby Lewis was pitching a NO HITTER?
well done
Rangers TV fears no jinx. They have a “PERFECT THRU __” notice locked to the scorebug.
How does Colby Lewis exist? He has been pitching since ’02, seemed to be out of the MLB at least twice, and I swear he gets better every year.
(The fact he gets to pitch against us certainly helps..)
So this is 3 of the last 5 vs. RH starters:
No-hit by Zach Davies for 6-2/3.
No-hit by Chase Anderson for 5-1/3.
No-hit by Colby Lewis for 8.
Well what do you expect against a Murder’s row like that.
Also, if FB can stop giving me all these reminders from 2 yrs ago where I was posting about blowout wins and “5 horsemen of the Oakpocalypse” I’d appreciate it…
Oakpocalypse Now
So they’re due for a hit.
See.
How bad are we that MLB.TV isn’t even letting folks view live in B9 of a no hitter.
Also, not the best time to try and sell me the Father’s day special.
Max Muncy!!!!!
Muncy becomes the Shannon Stewart of the 2016 A’s.
The Shannon Stewart of 2016.
Refresh the thread.
Nope-GMTA!
phew!
How do you give up a four-pitch walk when you have a perfecto going?
haha, FK your perfect game, no hitter, and shutout.
no shut out
Fosse calls our official scorer “the best in the business.” Drink.
lol he’s so ridiculous
27-39 with 96 games to go. I would say 36-60 (.375), putting them at 99 losses, is the over/under line. It’s too bad Reddick and Hill are untradeable until the All-Star break.
When you factor in how bad the Donaldson and the Cubs Shark trades appear to be (at what point do we begin to really worry about Barreto?), the crappy farm system, and the on field product which obviously speaks for itself, do either Beane or Forst start to seriously wonder about their job security?
I would have fired their asses when they traded Donaldson for shit.
and then hire… who?
Thanks, and go As.
I agree. Bad recent moves notwithstanding, I don’t know that any change of administration would bring better outcomes than the A’s achieved in the last 5 years.
This aside, Fisher is the most change-averse owner of any franchise I root for in my memory. He seems quite content with how his business is running and the annual profits he enjoys.
Beane is too revered here. Someone else may not be as good, but the team has staled a bit. These things happen. But the thing with a new person is, if they fail, they’re more likely to be replaced.
Is Barreto not good anymore?
Thanks, and go As.
Holy crap. There are five teams in the AL who have gotten less production out of the DH than the A’s.
That table doesn’t depict DH production, though. That just adds the total offensive stats of Davis and Butler, including their games in LF and at 1B respectively. Plus the A’s have used other DHs such as Coghlan and Canha.
Good point. A’s hitters as DH have hit .184/.220/.329 which is worst in the league, though Houston’s are almost as bad.
Ha, that’s more like it. When Sogard comes off the DL, DH him every day, we’ll get better production.
Oh, that’s dumb. I was assuming that they add up the plate appearance each player takes while they are actually in the DH spot.
The discrepancies in G and AB gave away that something was amiss. It does highlight what an insanely good season Ortiz is posting.
So I started to look at flight prices today. I don’t know if I can justify spending $200 or so to fly up and see this collection of misfits. Especially when they are going to be down here just before and I can go to the boring A for the first time since I was a kid.
They can’t be that FKing dense, can they?
Thanks, and go As.
Still better than Darren Rovell.
