The A’s and Kendall Graveman take on the Twins and Ervin Santana.
In 186 innings over 29 career games (27 starts) against the A’s, Santana has a 2.03 ERA.
Compare with his 4.16 ERA overall, or Felix Hernandez’ career 2.67 ERA against Oakland.
Billy Butler gets a rare start against a RHP, with Billy Burns on the bench. Big Billy had important (if not especially well-struck) hits in the last two games, while Little Billy was 0-for-12 against Detroit, and has hit just .233/.269/.272 this month.
On the other side, Graveman gets to face the worst offense in the AL.
Crisp, Lowrie, Vogt, Valencia, Davis, Butler, Alonso, Semien, Coghlan
coco
Contract details per Cot’s:
1) and 3) are highlighted because through 52 team games he’s pretty much right on pace for both of those.
That buyout it pretty cheap though.
41/168 so fae
89 of next 110
or 382 PAs.
if he plays 80 games that’s 4.75 per game
I don’t see him getting one without the other
To nitpick by including today’s game, he’s at 42/172.
42 x 162/52 =~ 131 games
172 x 162/52 =~ 536 PA
Thus “pretty much right on pace” if his health were to maintain all season. That seems very dubious. However, if he did stay healthy and if they were to trade Reddick a couple weeks after he returns from the DL, Bob’s lineup choices in late September could be interesting.
honestly, I didn’t read your note because i am dumb.
If he stays healthy, and if we arent going to be good next year, Id be ok with this.
why would we be bad coming off a world series win?
Marlinesque team blow up for even MORE prospects!!!
yesterday, that was a hit billy
is that dallas on espn?
Flemming, Braden, and Raul Ibanez.
Can we keep them?
i like that crew. I do. I like flemming OK on giants but they seem to have a directive to not talk about opposing players. he and miller give no background info on opposing players.
I really think that is part of the reason giants fans are they way they are
Good job,good effort.
that was a hit yesterday, billy
one well hit ball and its an out. but a run scores. just like last time the twins scored
In light of this review, the A’s are somehow 14th in all the majors per Fangraphs base running metric: http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2016&month=0&season1=2016&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=17,d.
Seems rather difficult to fathom.
14th of the second group?
Danny Valencia and Billy Butler share the prize for most negative baserunning value (on the A’s). Except that Butler has managed to do it while getting on base many fewer times.
Billy Burns is top 10 in all MLB. Some weird names at the bottom end — Yunel Escobar and Andrelton Simmons are 2nd worst and 9th worst baserunners this year. Between the two of them, they are 0-for-3 on stolen base attempts, but I know that BsR measures other stuff too. They are both on the Angels now, so I’m pretty happy about it over all.
Now to avoid the Davis K, Butler DP.
Yay?
why no pinch hitter?
a pitcher named tonkin?
that will go well
I am shocked – SHOCKED – at that GIDP.
if he in not d’dfa by the time he makes the dugout, forst is drunk
please keep bunting
butler should have bented
Victory!
Anything else going on today?
Ribs, lobster tails, catching up on GOT, that’s about it really.
Thanks, and go As.
The longest shot of the day at GGF was Eckersley in the 6th. He ran third.
Sharks sure ran into a buzzsaw that period. Yikes.
Yes that was quick.
bernie is bad at politics
If he sits under the basket Oklahoma City is shooting at in the second half and does his weird hand-waving stuff, they won’t make a single free throw.
HE CONTROLS THUNDER!!!!!!!!
That guy must be a shill of the 1%
I’m more upset that he and Danny scored tickets to this game somehow and then didn’t show up until halftime.
does this mean river plate is ISIS?
in other soccer news, friday friday gotta get down on friday.
Sigh.
I was just offered 2 tickets to US/COL in exchange for tickets to a Houston/SJ match next year.
I’m not around so I can’t go.
FFFFFFFFFFFF
Thanks, and go As.
that’s why there were 2 tickets. one for you and one so you could bribe your boss/girlfriend/mom or whoever is keeping you away.
maybe not entirely fairly automatically equating race with wealth (amiright, white soccer dads who can’t afford it either?), but still, we have the guardian talking about hayward.
yeah, fuck norcal soccer and all the federations
fuckers are just a bunch of elitist scumfucks.
organizing a kids soccer team is a fucking fuckmare. i hope they all fucking fuck the fuck out of fuck, fuckers
how do you really feel, ed
Thanks, and go As.
He’s kinda correct, except the college part.
College as a means to professional soccer is very quickly dying, as every MLS team starts pumping more money into their academy systems.
Pay to Play is FKing bullshit though. I don’t know how/why I manage to do it.
Thanks, and go As.
It’s nice to see Kurt Suzuki (.200/.257/.284) back in the lineup for the Twins. If Surkamp can’t get some of these guys out…
On another stats item, I was watching a bit of Padres-Mariners and took particular note of Matt Kemp’s .238 OBP, with 4 BB in 214 PA. What on earth happened there?
Keep hitting it to Sano.
Rats, he’s done for the night.
The Twins, bless their friendly Minnesota hearts, are happy to give the A’s as many free chances as they need.
Slusser looks so happy on her sabbatical from covering the A’s.
They’re not seagulls, they’re vultures circling the corpse of Surkamp’s “career”.
Ouch.
that was really odd.
a canadian behind me kept repeating there were more pigeons at the coliseum that fans
Turns out, until just now Nurse Upgrade thought the Beastie Boys line was “I got man hips like I was Rod Carew.”
no, that’s right. and mike D has 3 hips. hence the sadaharu oh line.
This is quite the high-wire act these pitchers are performing. I bet someone falls to his death.
With three off days coming up, we don’t need a 5th starter again until 6/14.
Sonny is eligible to return on 6/5.
I’m assuming they’ll use that to push Hill back a few days.
Surkamp optioned (was yesterday the day he could opt out if he was not on the major league roster?), so it looks like they expect Hill to be able to start this weekend.
And Sonny is supposed to make a rehab start in Stockton on Sunday.
Where it will be 105 degrees. Good luck Sonny!
The Donaldson trade is less awful if you pretend that Valencia was part of it.
I’m reasonably sure that Surkamp just hates the SDI as much as we do.
It appears that the uniform tracker is not tracking uniforms this year, so I ask this to the crowd: Are we wearing the whites more this year?
I don’t have numbers either, but it seems like the whites and grays have been very prevalent, and the green and gold have lived up to the “alternates” name.
Oh for fucks sake.
So Coughlan cant get in quick enough to make the catch, then misplays the bounce completely, than makes a terrible throw home when the runner could be had with anything normal.
But you make sacrifices to get the .158 bat in the lineup.
It was a terrible Raiders-field like hop, but as to your broader point, Coghlan’s performance is another reason why 130 games for Coco no longer seems so absurd.
I find it hard to believe that Muncy, or Smolinski, or some waiver wire vet, would not be better than Coghlan while Reddick is out.
Yeah, total hyperbole, but hes just bad.
WTH happened to the field? RF is playing like an old Fresno putt-putt course.
Not that this is really a desirable option, but isn’t Fuld eligible to come off the DL soon?
Fuld had shoulder surgery, out for the year I think.
Ah, shucks.
Now I have “Don’t Let Go” bouncing between my ears.
I thought Fuld was declared out for the entire season.
he played so poorly today
Swinging at that pitch perfectly encapsulates why Alonso has been so godawful this year. He works the count to a great hitter’s count and then swings at a terrible borderline breaking ball. Just no plan at all. He has no idea what pitch and location he should be looking for.
Doesn’t help that Pomeranz apparently is amazing this year.
Outside of the awesomeness of Fernando Abad, the Twins bullpen really is quite horrendous.
So much for the “awesomeness”.
The Coliseum mound is his kryptonite.
Probably should have won 7 of 9 if not for Leonys Pedtin.
The battle for last place is heated.
The A’s are a runaway freight train! Take appropriate precautions.
Thanks, and go As.
the A’s have caused confusion and delay
God I hate that plutocratic bastard.
My feelings have sort of faded as the kids stopped watching, but it just seemed to me that he really had 0 clue how to run a railway.
how did he become a knight?
My guess is the war. Didn’t everyone in GB get knighted during their finest hour? Maybe he sent Edward to gather munitions..
By the way-the little railway kicks ass over the rest of Sodor. Rheneas and Skarloey!
Sold the Door!
Sold the Door!
Sold the Door!
so much win
Now everyone near my cube is wondering why I cant stop snorting.
I loved that scene.
The Twins are 6-0 vs. the Angels and Mariners but 9-36 against everybody else, and if the A’s win today it will be the ninth time they have been swept (it’s their 17th series of the season).
Also FYI for batgirl and other DirecTVers, the A’s are on 213-1 today (213 has White Sox-Mets and is blacked out).
Oh hey, the whaddayacallits are playing right now. That team we tepidly root for. You know, the Athletics.
oh I was like the Quakes don’t play until 7:30
Thanks, and go As.
butler is 130 feet from scoring position.
“the resurgent billy bulter”
If we look at just his last three games, he’s OPSing 1.286!!! (3 for 7 with a dinger and only 1 GIDP)
4 for 8!
Twins might ask for a review of that one just because it was impossible.
For those of us who aren’t watching, how bad was Smolinski’s TOOTBLAN?
VERY bad. He was out by 10 feet.
Made up for it.
This is another one like Butler’s (at Fenway I think?) where Centeno has already received the throw from 1B and is turning to make the tag.
Yeah, I was there in person for the Butler at Fenway TOOTBLABB
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaash
Scoring from second on an infield single only seems to work for our opponents.
Because unlike our opponents, we don’t get to take advantage of the poor baseball IQ of our infielders.
Nashville has won 16 out of 17 games and just scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth to send a game to extras.
Giving up 7 in the top of the 10th wasn’t ideal.
Billy Butler – not entirely terrible.
Let’s not get carried away here.
Wake me when we get to almost tradable.
Manaea’s rolling now.
Sorry for jinxing you Sean.
He’s fine.
Whatever Young told him to during is mound visit sure worked.
I don’t know how good Valencia actually is, but man is he hitting the poop out of the ball right now.
Uh, Molitor, that’s still Billy Butler you know.
And Phegley hits into a Butler to make him look like a genius.
That looked sort of like a fair ball.
Quite the picket fence they are building.
way to jinx it
Quite a ride, this team gives fans.
Back up to third place for a few minutes!
There are 34 people on the ballot in the primary for Boxer’s senate seat! My favorite is definitely this “Environmental Healing Consultant” running as a Green:
I just started looking at the booklet. It’s shocking how many of these candidates have hotmail accounts!
You weren’t swayed by Ling Ling “Run for God’s Heart and America’s Freedom, challenge 10 giant chaos in economy and economy-related sectors” Shi?
And if you can’t pull it together to submit a photo, I’m not voting for you.
Yay, we can beat the .300 team.
I’m very confused as to how they won 83 games last year.
20-7 in May, 63-72 in all other months.
Aw, did they really eject this guy?
I’m not sure that hat qualifies as dope, much less very dope.
Glen and Ray were having quite the chuckle over that one last night.
but the cargo shorts, they are da bomb, yes?
fly?
phat?
fresh?
stupid fresh?
Depends on whether the guy gave them any lip on the way up the stairs. They may have just walked him out to the concourse, pointed at the exit door, and walked away.
that seems civilized
i know the only time i was kicked out, i didn’t stay kicked out for long
story time
meh. dollar wed. top row 3rd deck friend smoking a spliff.
walked us down and to the ramp gate. we walked out the ramp gate. we stood for a second and walked back in behind them.
not really that interesting
Go Sharks
Gonna need them to win this in the next 2:11. I can’t handle overtime.
How did they not score there??
This NBC hockey play-by-play guy is great. His calls on big saves make my heart race.
Is it Doc Emrick?
I believe it is.
I have no idea how they can keep up with it let alone give anywhere near an accurate description of what’s going on. I can only imagine Vince.
So, this is where I observe that the Sharks look completely overmatched and I have a hard time seeing them push this series to five games. Hope the observation is as true this series as last series.
I don’t think they’re completely overmatched. Definitely overmatched. But not by much.
I said this last series and it seemed to motivate the Sharks. Here’s hoping.
Yeah, they kept it close, tied it at the end, and ended up losing in OT. Pittsburgh held serve. Let’s hope home ice will bring out the best in them, and they’ll tie it up and go from there. One thing for sure, we can’t say they underachieved this year like so many times before.
oh my hell the Quakes are fucking garbage.
Thanks, and go As.
so, messi’s in spain declaring in his tax evasion court case with phrases that he thinks make him sound innocent (english sense) but make him look innocent (spanish sense, ingenuous): “i don’t even look at the contracts, i just sign them.” and “i focus on soccer, and on paperwork i trust my dad.”…
plus there’s a continuation of the failed AFA presidential elections from last december, which got suspended till last monday due to factions fighting over the future of the tournament composition/schedule (which even at third glance doesn’t quite spell out TV-money laundering but that’s probably what it says…) to the point that monday’s vote was violently disrupted and suspended again, causing a constitutional rift that puts the AFA itself on the brink of non-existence, which if it goes that far, the players have to check out of santa clara and find their own tickets home…
and if that’s not enough to keep you preoccupied and restless, let me add, NEW RULES!
—corner flags can carry sponsor logos
—if OT, a 4th substitution is available
—if a sent off or sidelined player interferes with a play, direct free kick or penalty (as opposed the the previous indirect). if they interfere on a ball on target to goal, the ref can call it a goal.
—if you’re changing your boots, you gotta wait to be allowed back in by the ref during a routine stop
—the ref’s reign begins at “reconocimiento del campo” (i don’t know what it’s called in english. when the players come out to check out the field, even if they go back into the dressing room before coming out for the actual game). which means you can be sent off before the game begins. (yellows are still only applicable during game time.)
—kickoff does not need to be forward anymore. it can be side or back, just has to roll. (i guess that means no lobs on the first kick?)
—hands and arms no longer count, neither for defendant or attacker, to determine offside positioning.
—triple punishment during a last-man play in the box is no longer mandatory.
—the ref can give a fee kick or penalty for being insulted by a player.
—yellow card for fakies during penalties. you can feint in the runup, but once the runup is completed, you can’t feint. (let’s call it the neymar rule.) and to reinforce the rule against the goalie taking a step forward, this is now yellow worthy too.
—yellow card for blocking a side throw-in if standing within 2 meters of player throwing in.
—a corner kick has to be unequivocal. so no more little touch within the angle area to put the D in motion and *then* kick.
all this, and it’s still only thursday. i got a little emo when looking at the schedule this morning and saw brazil v ecuador at the rose bowl. i went all, awwww, big soccer is coming back to the ole WC venues, and this time it’s like, more real somehow.
I’m trying to imagine the scenario in which a sent off or sidelined player interferes with a ball on target to goal. Only in Argentina, I suppose.
ok, so i had to look it up in english to get the full gist. it’s if anyone / anything (other than a player) interferes it’s a goal.
so, this rare example of seemingly non-argentine failure at semblance of orderliness, if it hadn’t been a goal, woulda been a goal. i say seemingly because it’s still likely an argentine was involved somehow. but i do wonder what specific human-interfered instance they were reacting to when they made up that rule.
i guess it’s the random others standing around who can’t control themselves, really.
… aaaand messi might not be there on monday. still hurting from that honduras guy landing on his kidney / lower ribs last week. stupid friendlies.
Noooooo
Warriors…
Heh heh. Bill looked plenty fired up during Game 7 the other day.
Steph/Klay shoot like shit… still win it convincingly.
Livingston is awesome.
Thanks, and go As.
The Cavs aint no OKC
It’s dangerous to judge a series off of one game, but the Cavs seem truly overmatched here. Other than LeBron, everyone in their rotation is remarkably one dimensional.
The Warriors are just ruthless in exploiting guys who can’t defend (Irving, Love, Frye) or can’t score (Shumpert, Dellavadova, Thompson). And the guys who can’t defend aren’t just physically inferior at defense, they fall asleep mentally and blow assignments. They were lucky that Curry had an off night and Klay got in foul trouble, and they still lost going away.
Nice reach-around there by Scrappy Doo.
He was just going for the ball. With his fist.
This game at Petco Park is right out of a wild alcoholic dream.
My god.
