i doubt it has been relevant since tim yo died, and probably since epicenter shut
i’m with it. one of the original tenets of the place is about lyrics that don’t hate (bands have to submit lyric sheets for approval before being booked — sure, that’s so progressive it’s downright censorshiplike), and the recent booking guy has booked bands like the mentors (and sure again, “classics” of hate punk. and i’ve seen them. just in other venues that didn’t have originating tenets against hate speech.) and other newer shock-value bands singing about rape and bitches and stuff. so the boycotters are fighting that culture from suddenly ingraining. plus there’s gendered-bathrooms issues which the ruling board is solving like it comes from north carolina or something (don’t ask / don’t tell) and that transgender punks aren’t comfortable with.
there’s other stuff too, like green day playing a benefit show there that nobody could get a ticket for, so it basically went agains the egalitarian spirit. and, further point, if green day wanted to raise real money for the cause, they woulda booked a place that sat more than a couple hundred… but those other points get kinda murky in the petty and-another-thing kinda way.
[edit] green day being ineligible to play 924 in the first place because of major-label deal, also stated in the originating tenets.
