    The Matt McBride call up is interesting. By all accounts, it was done to circumvent his opt out and he’ll be going down when Manaea comes up.

    From the player’s perspective, getting 3 days of a MLB paycheck and the pay bump associated with being on the 40 man for the rest of the season is nice, but it’s probably still much less than his presumed Japan deal. I don’t know if, internally, he and his agent are pissed about it, but I’ve never heard of too many cases like this where the team is blatantly exploiting the loophole in an opt out.

    How is it possible for Cal to have the #1 pick in the NFL draft despite being so incredibly bad at football?

    • sslinger Apr 28,2016 6:27 pm || Up

      This has been going on for years – there have been a lot of very good NFL players from Cal over the past decade plus while the team has not had great success overall. Including all positions, too, not just QB and RB. Either it points to some deep failings in the program or it just goes to show how hard it is to have a really good team even with some very good players every year.

      • Soaker Apr 28,2016 9:31 pm || Up

        Cal has 38 active players in the NFL, according to Pro Football Reference; that’s tied for 17th among all schools, and ranks 4th in the Pac-12. Goff is our 11th first-round draft choice since 2000. And we did go from 1-11 to 5-7 to 8-5 in Goff’s three years, so “incredibly bad” isn’t really right (ask Bed about that).

        • sslinger Apr 28,2016 10:42 pm || Up

          That’s not a bad track record since 2000. Can you tell how many of the 16 schools ahead of us have finished #1, or been in the BCS bowls? Or how many of the 3 Pac12 schools have been to the Rose Bowl?

          • Soaker Apr 29,2016 10:28 am || Up

            You can sort here to get the list; I’m pretty sure the answer to both questions is “all of them” although Miami, which leads with 61 active players, has been rather ordinary in the last decade or so.

              Actually Tennessee just squeaks in with a January 2000 BCS bowl appearance. They’re somewhat similar to Cal since Peyton Manning was there, although Cal has hit lower lows.
