bute is such a drag. he has no flexibility. without him, you could go three catchers and have vogt spell reddick and alonso, or have better bats like smolinski and lambo.
I am not saying this is an 90 win team without him, but a much more enjoyable one
Slusser (presumably channeling Beane/Forst/Melvin) says Hahn could be send down, with Doubront moving into the rotation and Dull taking the last bullpen slot. Disappointing, because I think Hahn has the biggest upside of our non-Gray starters, but I guess there is something really not right with his command right now.
I hate to say it, but we might need Sogard (instead of Canha, I guess). They keep calling Coghlan a “superutility guy” but he’s barely played in the IF at all in the majors (17 games at 2B, 11 at 3B, almost 500 in the OF). Not sure that’s good enough for our only backup infielder, especially given that Valencia/Semien/Lowrie is already a bad defensive infield.

I have an irrational belief that Semien will be only slightly-below average defensively this year. I think it helps that I live on the east coast and don’t see many televised A’s games.
A lot of talk out there about him being more solid once he started working with Wash, but I was too numb by then to have registered a difference.
