Isn’t it kind of messed up that the “Winter Meetings” happen in late autumn? Also, everyone uses words wrong nowadays all the time and you’re not allowed to correct them on it or you are a mansplainer or a purveyor of “well, actuallys.”
Anyhoo, here’s a new place to discuss the Oakland A’s underwhelming roster or whatever.
That roster won’t include Cueto, who is apparently signing with the Gnats along with Shark.
Commence the SF circlejerk online.
Thanks, and go As.
In making this post, I noticed that there are now 11 category options for “essay,” “essay help,” “[Cyrillic characters probably meaning essay]” and the like. Did the spammers decide to create their own category tags because they are anal like that, or did one of you weirdos do it?
(Well, actually) last (i.e. only) time I checked the internet said that the Cyrillic characters translated as “uncategorized.”
Yup. “without category” (bez rubriki)
6/130 for Cueto’s dreadlocks.
We have Chris Bassit though, so we got that goin for us.
Thanks, and go As.
As long as they spend all their money before they get to thinking about Cespedes.
For discussion purposes, our current team?
LF: Crisp
CF: Burns
RF: Reddick
3B: Valencia
SS: Semien
2B: Lowrie
1B: Alonso (platoon with Canha)
C: Vogt (platoon with Phegley)
DH: Butler
Bench: Phegley, Canha, Sogard?, Fuld?
SP: Gray, Hill, Graveman, Bassitt, Hahn?
RP: Doolittle, Madson, Axford, Rzepczynski, Dull, Alvarez?, Doubront?
I guess maybe Wendelken makes the team out of Arizona.
You forgot Smolinski, who will also see time in LF.
And Canha may end up as more or less a full-time player, getting time at both 1B and LF.
I wouldn’t mind continuing to forget about Smolinski.
He was OK. Can you forget about Fuld, Butler, and Sogard instead?
That’s going to be a fucking garbage team.
If Crisp is even healthy, he’s not a good enough hitter for a corner OF spot anymore. He also isn’t a good enough defender for CF. Burns is OK and Reddick is good.
The infield is going to be a mess. Lowrie is horrible, Alonso/Canha is bad, Vogt is OK, Butler should be cut.
Thanks, and go As.
Pretty much agree with all of this. This is such a sleep-inducing roster. Crisp won’t last the season, or play well enough to earn a corner outfielder spot. The infield is going to be a challenge for Ron Washington, I guess.
I realize the team isn’t going to be good, and some of their acquisitions will pan out better than expected. But none of it makes me want the think about the upcoming season.
Well, I’m convinced.
Should make it go down to absolute zero. Amateurs.

You can’t expect a retired teacher from the 19th century to understand science of today. Just the mere idea of electricity was scary back then. Harnessing it from the sun? Forget about it!

How long are we going to have to put up with the constant barrage of Star Wars talk? Another two years or so?
They’re shooting to have an annual movie for as long as they can keep it up. So bunker down.
Yearly?
no way.
The Star Wars universe is big enough with enough stuff going on that it could make for a LOT of original movies.
That could be cool, assuming it’s not just all done as a Disney money grab.
Thanks, and go As.
Even if the movies are good, this is absolutely a Disney money grab. They are going to be swimming in it.
Well yeah but I mean they already are swimming in it. I’m talking like Adam Sandler type of “fuck it I want a few more bucks let’s make another movie” money grab.
Thanks, and go As.
This. And. That.
Every year sucks.
Every few years, like James Bond or the Marvel Universe stuff? Yeah, I’m totally down.
Thanks, and go As.
Um, Marvel is every year. And in some cases several a year.
But I do agree that it should be more like Bond than Marvel.
I’m so sorry.

This Republican foreign policy debate is very funny as long as you don’t take what they are saying seriously in which case it is very not funny.
You know it’s bad when Rand Paul is the one making sense.
It completely blows my FKing mind that Trump is considered (and is polling) as a legit candidate still.
Thanks, and go As.
And all he talks about when challenged is how popular he is, and it works!
Bush: You are not a serious candidate. Your proposals are crazypants.
Trump: Oh yeah, I’m at 40 percent and you’re at 3 percent. That’s why I’m in the center of the stage and you keep moving further to the end of it. Bite me.
*crowd goes nuts*
his negatives are in the high 40s. he wont last
He was great. Like he finally realized he can’t possibly win and so just decided to point out how utterly nuts all of the rest of them are.

Anti-Isis proposals floated at Republican debate would likely be war crimes
And they were so cavalier about it! Hugh Hewitt, the right-wing radio host CNN brought onto the panel so that Republicans wouldn’t hit them, at one point asked Ben Carson if he was too nice of a guy to slaughter civilians, as if that is something self-evidently required of a president.
It helps to be from the country that is above international war crimes laws…

Iwakuma back to the Mariners after his Dodgers contract fell through due a failed physical. Dodgers offer was supposedly 3/$45, but this new contract has 3/$41 as his best-case scenario, or could be as little as 1/$12 if he fails to meet innings pitched incentives and the Ms pass on club options.
Nice to see that Giants beatwriter Susan Slusser is providing updates on these moves.
When you look at the attrition rate at that company I find it surprising she still works there at all.

I’ve seen Star Wars and SPOILER ALERT!..it’s a talkie.
If you’ve already seen a JJ Abrams movie than you’ve seen Star Wars because all of his movies are the same. They move fast, they’re mostly entertaining, and it’s best if you don’t think too much about the plot.
Saw it for the second time last night and the JJness stood out even more. Still enjoy it though.
I’ll just assume this off-season the A’s have traded for players I’ve never heard of and by the time I know their names they’ll get traded for a new batch of players I’ve never heard of.

Merry xmas eve FKers!
Merry xmas eve to you too! Crazy warm here in Cambridge, eh?
I got your white Christmas right here. Any FKers thinking of driving to the Sierra today, that’s going to be a lot of sitting in your stopped car looking at taillights. It will be nice this weekend, but it just looks too nasty today.
Heading to Delaware on Boxing Day, where it’s currently pushing 70F.
Heading out to Coliseum on Christmas Eve, where it’s hella butt cold.
That may be miserable. Is it supposed to rain around gametime? I hate sitting in the rain.

College Jack Del Rio is hawt.
Just noticed the Raiders score/situation and I’m confused.
Doesn’t the first team to score in overtime win? And if so, once in field goal range why would you risk plays that could be intercepted/turned-over rather than just kicking the goal?
If on the 1st possession of OT the team with the ball kicks a FG, the opposing team is given one possession to score a TD to win.
If the 1st possession is a touchdown, game over (see: Tebow beating the Steelers in the playoffs)
If both teams kick field goals, then the game becomes sudden death.
Thanks, and go As.
I was totally confused by this too, as a football ignoramus. Fun game to be at. Three guys got kicked out of my section — not for fighting or foul language, for smoking. Marlboro Lights. Even the cops were making fun of them.
There was a much-tweeted picture of some idiot who stole a seat out of the football bleachers (or at least unbolted it, IDK whether he made it outside with it) but most of the people I talked to, over the last few weeks for a story I did and at the game, were confident the Raiders would be back next year.
@ptbnl There was a rule change. If you get the ball first, you have to score a TD to win. If you get a field goal, the other team has one possession to score a TD to win or tie it up with another kick.
Got it – thanks.

I hope all you FKers got exactly what you wanted yesterday, and that you are enjoying a relaxing weekend.
I love Christmas. But I’m really glad this one is over.
So I’m reading this HGH story. Toradol is not a “powerful painkiller”. It has a specific action that helps musculoskeletal pain, and is actually in the NSAID (like ibuprofen) family. It comes in IV, IM, and tab form. You can still drive after getting the medication. We give it to patients INSTEAD OF narcotics. Dumb fucks.
As much as I like to make fun of the stadium and everything, I’m not sure how this can be surprising. Bowl games before NYD almost never have big crowds. 33k in a 70k seat stadium looks terrible, but thats just notice that 1) we have too man y bowl ganmes and 2) it should be in a smaller stadium.
Bring back the Cal Bowl in Fresno!!
When you have a team enter a bowl game with a 5-7 record, you have too many bowl games.
Granted the Bay Area media (Kawakami, Killion, Cohn) are certainly not unbiased in their reporting on the 9ers this year; however, I have found everything I have read to be fascinating.
I really think if an owner as awful as Jed York owned a team that I cared about, I would stop supporting the team until he was no longer the owner. You could certainly argue Chris Cohan was on that level, but the whole Harbaugh-Tomsula swap just vaults York into a whole other dimension.
Saw this article about Rich Hill in the Boston Globe yesterday.
Then enjoyed the sweet schadenfreude of watching the Jets pull off the win while at Logan waiting for the flight home yesterday and hearing all the Pats fans wailing about the coin toss decision.

East Bay beer lovers, if you haven’t seen it yet there’s a new shop on Solano down by San Pablo offering growlers from a variety of local small craft brewers. And they deliver.nn1
… except that their delivery are is pretty limited, and $12-16 for a 32oz “growlette” is an extremely expensive way to drink!
For someone who has brewed his own maybe, but otherwise the price isn’t outrageous. And given that they’re just starting out, from El Cerrito to Oakland doesn’t seem too bad.
Anyhow, I enjoyed the Cleophus Quealy we had from them.
Brewing your own makes a $10 six-pack seem expensive, but $12 for 32oz is equivalent to a $27 sixer!
And according to the website they don’t deliver to Oakland.
It’s a nice idea, but as it stands it would be quicker and cheaper for me just to go to the brewery itself with my own growler.
hmmm, we uncear on the capital invetment made?
It’s a good question – it would be very interesting to see their business plan and financials spreadsheets because from the consumer end the $30/sixer model seems unsustainable.
LMAO at this Cal bowl game time slot.
It looks like we’ll have an entertaining battle for the coveted Golden Toilet Seat in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl.
I’m fed up with the automatic ejection penalty for the defensive player for an incidental helmet-to-helmet contact foul. The baseball equivalent would be automatic ejection of the pitcher for any HBP, even the ones where Barry Bonds sticks his elbow armor out. The officials need to have discretion to give a 15-yard penalty plus a warning on the first infraction and then if the same player commits the foul again, fine, automatic ejection. To kick out one of Air Force’s best DB’s midway in the first quarter for that contact was absurd.
Somehow there are four bowl games today, and only five on New Years Day.
Well, there are 40 bowl games this year, almost all on ESPN which doesn’t want them competing with each other or with NFL time slots. So, yeah, some land in the 11 a.m. Tuesday slot. At least this one is being played before a respectable crowd. I’ve only watched a significant part of a couple of the other games, but flipping the channel to some of the others, a lot of them ought to be played in front of green screens rather than empty grandstands. Then ESPN could project endless ads on the green screens and make even more money off these pathetic games. I can’t see watching them unless you’re an alum of one of the schools, but the ratings say there must be a lot of other viewers.
Not so good for other FKing bowl teams today.
Obviously we loved that one, but it’s pretty shameful to be unable to stop a team that can’t pass. Should have had nine in the box all game.
Also, drove me nuts how many times the announcers talked about UNC’s one (ONE!!!!) key injury when Baylor was out of QBs and also missing their best RB and WR.
One of the great things about being a KU grad is I don’t have to spend much time planning on how I’m going to watch a bowl game.
Agreed. Those make me so mad because they are wildly unfair to the players. I saw one a few weeks ago where the WR stumbled a little on the catch, causing him to drop his head into the path of the hit. DB ejected.
If you are a sick freak (like me), you should be watching Nightwatch on A&E.
I’m just catching up on season 2 of Nightwatch, and some lady just had her eyeball bitten out of the socket by a prostitute.
I think it’s actually more fun to hear your gleeful recaps of all the goriest parts.
They don’t blur out the injuries either. GSWs, stab wounds, eyeball hanging out, broken bones, ripped off calf muscle. It’s like Christmas every fucking episode.
I used to hate that stuff. Then I started working at the hospital. Now that shit is my wheelhouse.
PS – We have a new doctor in town. I’m in love with him. Three times this weekend he praised me in front of coworkers, saying he was glad I was here, that I’m a solid nurse in the ER. And once be actually stopped another doctor and said he would have been up a creek if it wasn’t for me. Damn near cried, that sweet bastard. I was so proud.

Do I giggle anytime someone says the number 69? Yes, yes I do.
What’s the best movie you saw this year?
Inside Out
Also good.
I would have to agree. Loved it.
The second best movie I saw this year may have been Big Hero 6 (a 2014 release, but I saw it late). I admittedly miss most grown up movies these days, but I also think those are two legitimately wonderful films.
EDIT: The Peanuts Movie was also A+ in my opinion.
Just saw The Big Short, which was really good. It’s hard to believe how they made the great financial collapse entertaining, but they pulled it off while not pulling any punches about how FKed up the system is. Christian Bale is fantastic, as is Steve Carrell. And it’s also scary as hell when you think of what’s still going on.
I enjoyed the book…and yes it is scary as hell to think about what’s still going on.
The Martian or Ex Machina.
Probably have to say The Martian, however I really enjoyed Mad Max, and Creed was WAY better than it had any business being.
Thanks, and go As.
Do I giggle anytime someone says the number 47? Yes, yes I do.
On the A’s front my understanding is that A is the first letter in the alphabet.
Best movie? Mad Max: Fury Road
That’s my number one as well. I also really liked Ex Machina, Sicario, The Martian, Spotlight, and Best of Enemies.
The latest Mission Impossible and Ant-Man were also a lot of fun…it was a pretty good year for movies.
I loved The Martian.
Mad Max and Spotlight were highlights for me. Possibly The Martian, except that I read the book right before seeing it, so that made me a bit pickier. I’m pretty sure there are some good ones that I’ve forgotten, but I forgot them.
Sicario had hands down the best scene (10-15 min) of 2015.
I need to rewatch that and focus more.
Thanks, and go As.
I thought 2015 was a pretty good year for movies overall.
I think the one I enjoyed most was The End of the Tour. I thought both The Gift, Ex Machina, Mississippi Grind, and The Big Short were very, very good as well.
I liked Mad Max a lot as well, but I do think some of the experience was lost by watching it via Amazon instant video as opposed to the theater.
I did not see Sicario yet, but have a feeling that will be quite good as well.
Yeah, End of the Tour is one that I liked a lot too. I don’t necessarily think it was a great movie though.
Just made it home from Delaware – with luggage but without the rest of the family.
Following a cancelled connection in Chicago, the first available flight for three people was January 3rd!
After an hour’s haggling they found one seat to SF and two to LA, connecting to a flight home tomorrow morning.
Well, at least you’re back. I’m still stuck in Arkansas.
“Honey, I’m taking the nonstop flight. You and the kid are on the overnight connection through LA.” Boy will your next few weekends be consumed with chores.
Strangely, texting that I’d also been upgraded to first class on the direct flight during boarding didn’t help matters.
Actually I tried to get her on the direct flight but the agent had already assumed that I’d take that one when she grabbed it, and if she’d released it to change to mrs ptbnl we’d have lost it altogether. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.
I just got up at 6:30 on Jan 1 to go to the airport. Six hour flight to LA, then nine hour layover, then 13(?) hour flight to Melbourne, then nine hour layover, then 3-4 hour flight to Christchurch. My checked bags are full of microwave amplifiers and weird homemade electronics, so I’m sure that will go over just great.
Good luck! Are you going to be upgrading BICEP3 or Keck?
both hopefully… well I really hope that BICEP3 will basically be working by the time I get there
you recently adopted sikh fashion will smooth things out
We were supposed to fly home from Dayton through Denver on Monday afternoon/evening. Unfortunately, the airplane for our Denver flight was coming from Chicago, or at least it would have if not for the weather. I spent almost two hours on the phone with United and finally got a flight for three on Delta through Atlanta leaving Wednesday night which got in just after midnight yesterday.
Ugh.
Worst movie you saw this year?
I wouldn’t say they were bad movies, but I was disappointed in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and Dope.
My wife liked Me and Earl a lot. And I liked parts of it (especially the soundtrack, which was pretty much all off of Another Green World). But I was pretty offended by the overall framing of the movie — a teenage girl dies from cancer, but that’s ok because it convinced a talented slacker to get off his ass and apply for college!
I thought the way they handled his relationship with the best friend was such a lost opportunity. That was the most promising part of the story.
I just saw Me and Earl, Mistress America, and The Intern on my flights between SF and Mpls. All were enjoyable but I agree that Me and Earl could have been a lot better. I returned to the first of my pile of screeners for the SAG-AFTRA awards, Beasts of No Nation.

Come on. You had to see that coming.

The worst movie I watched 45 minutes of was Man From UNCLE…Armie Hammer’s acting is where charisma goes to die.
The movie I was probably most excited to view yet disappointed me the most was Steve Jobs.
Oh gawd I have a final winner. I made the ill-advised decision to watch Ricki and the Flash last night (which I can only explain by mental instability brought on by an 80’s pre-teen Rick Springfield obsession.) I cannot think of one redeeming quality in that movie.

Young adults amaze me. The eldest Ace came back from Christmas with the ex days ago with several bags and boxes with stuff in them. They have say in the middle of the entry way/living room since. Today I told him the stuff all needs to get put away/packed up for his return trip to OR. He proceeds to take one thing and then go back to playing games. Reminded again, he takes one more thing. This is an official adult who is attending a major public institution of higher learning.
At least little Miss Aces has the decency to yell at me for making her life miserable while she puts things away.
Nice start to the new year: Fly up to PDX on 1/5 for an interview and get to stay an extra night on their dime. And I might find out about another job on the same day. 2016 looking up.

Stanford making a serious argument for 8-team playoff. The only potential champion outside the top 8 is Baylor (which is just a nutty situation given the QB stuff), but Stanford both had no rational argument for a top-4 ranking and a strong chance to beat (at least) the two teams that lost yesterday.
8 game playoff would mean a 15 game season for the two teams in the final…that seems crazy to me for unpaid players to have to go through that but it’s probably where we’re headed.
The issue there is probably more the unpaid part than the 15 game part.
Agreed. Would be WAY better TV than the shitty pre-christmas bowls we have now.

Au revoir Jennifer.
Am I wrong in feeling that games this bowl season have almost all been horrible?
The top 20 teams in the final playoff rankings participated in 11 bowl games, including the Oregon-TCU blowout currently in progress.
The closest final was an 11-point margin (Baylor-UNC). There was one 14-point game and one 16-point game. Assuming Oregon wins big, the other eight of those games all had at least 20-point margins.
Yay for epic collapses.
Well, 2016 is off to a fucking shit start.
OTOH, I can probably go to a couple A’s games this year since I’m not dating a Gnats fan.
Thanks, and go As.
Sorry man.
Could have been worse. I could have moved in with her and put a ring on it.
Thanks, and go As.
*makes notes*
Shit – really sorry :-(
that sucks
Fuck, I’m sorry to hear that, Mike.
Thanks
To all of you.
It really is for the best, and I’m surprisingly okay with it.
Thanks, and go As.
So, I dropped the eldest Ace off at OAK yesterday for his flight back to PDX. Sat n the parking lot and thought about bay area stuff I should do since I was up there with nothing to do and it was the middle of the day. In particular thought about going and seeing my family since I havent seen them in almost 2 yrs. But common sense told me I would then want to stay for hours and I really should get back home since the other kid Aces were alone and potentially getting ready to have their own Thunderdome..
1 hr later and I am driving down I-5 near Santa Nella when I get a call from my cousin letting me know that my favorite uncle passed away in his sleep Fri night. Turned the car around and ended up spending several hrs with the family. His passing wasnt unexpected, so it actually was a rather enjoyable time all things considered.
This is my long way of saying I love all you wierdos and dont go away. Every day/evening we get to chat with each other is great and I want to spend as much time as I can with all forms of my “family”.
Hear, hear.
im sorry for your loss. Right back at you. I don’t post a lot, but I appreciate all of you!
just you nand me till feb 15
Five turnovers. Denver, the FK are you doing?
Setting everybody up for Manning’s Heroic Gigantic Homecoming.
Bundled up earlier (high 20s, wind chill in the mid-teens) to go take some snow pics around the apartment complex this morning. Only about an inch fell, but now we’ve got the freezing rain and ice going.
Linky
Pretty pleased with this considering my normal lens (18-140mm) is off for repairs right now, so I got by using a 70-300mm lens for some zoomed-in stuff, and the camera’s phone for the rest.
Got alerts today that OSU is closed today due to the cold weather. Uh…shouldnt they be used to that by now?
Im not saying I would be fine in the mid-teens, but I assume it gets that cold in Oregon often enough that it should cause shut downs..
I guarantee you it’s not the cold, but all the ice. It’s very slick around here right now.nn1
What does the weather in Oregon have to do with Ohio State / Oklahoma State?
Also, football is over for those schools, so not sure why they’re bothering to hold classes anyway.
So who’s seen Making a Murderer on Netflix yet? Definitely interesting and worth a watch.
But it was so one-sided in its beliefs that I feel like maybe there was omitted information in the documentary. Because from what it showed it was cut and dry miscarriage of justice.
Does it get any faster paced after the first episode? I found it incredibly sloooooooow moving.
agreed. I couldn’t even get through the 1st episode?
Thanks, and go As.
I was sucked in by the first episode. My fiance was bored in the first episode, but glued to the TV by the end of the second episode. If you watch 2 and still aren’t intrigued enough, it’s not for you.
OK that’s good to know. I’ll give Ep2 a shot.
Not really, but my reaction was kind of the opposite. Went into it not sure that a 10-hour documentary would hold my attention, but quickly got completely sucked in.
Not quite binge-watching though, because we need breaks to let anger at the police and courts dissipate.
My wife and I watched the whole thing in three days.
I really enjoyed it. I do have the same misgiving as you, but I have a hard time believing that any amount of additional information could dispel reasonable doubts about his guilt/innocence.
It’s just that there was nobody who had motive and Avery was the last confirmed person to see her alive. Some of that is shitty policework, but…
One theory I quite like is that Colburn/Lenk found the car in an illegal search of the property. That’s where they found the key, that’s how the searchers knew exactly where to look, that’s why Colburn called dispatch.
Yeah, that theory seems plausible. And it is totally possible that he did do it … but not beyond a reasonable doubt
I haven’t watched Making a Murderer yet, but the article about the new Killing Fields caught my eye. More true crime stuff, sounds like it’s done well.
Anyone have any idea why two older posts showed new activity yet there was nothing new in them?
I think they were unapproved spam comments.
