Return of the Mark Grill 281

Out with the old grill, in with the new.

Mr. Jamie Kotsay is back, y’all, to coach the bench with the hustle, grit, and bad back we all loved so much.

I have no other baseball to report, but let’s talk soccer!!

Big World Cup qualifier tonight between Brazil and Messiless Argentina. Could Brazil miss a World Cup for the first time? (My take: nah.)

Meanwhile, two of France’s best players are, per court order, not allowed to be in the same place at the same time because one of them was recorded coordinating a blackmail scheme against the other over release of a sex tape. France stay France.

No more heading the ball for the littlest players in the USA. How will coach Future Ed adjust his tactics?

Post, FKers. Post against the dying of the light.

    I don’t see how you stop kids from doing headers. and why are there so many shirtless boys in that picture?

    I have $5. No I don\'t.

      Teach them to control the ball with their chest and then their feet.

      That said, generally below U10 the ball is never high enough in the air for headers anyway.

      A good side effect will be kids learning to be more technical. Less goalies punting the ball, more building up out of the back (that’s one of the only times the ball actually goes high enough for headers), short corner kicks or more attempts at volleys, etc.

        There’s maybe one header a game in my kid’s U-10 league. The ball is high enough to be headed more often than that, but most of the boys are too scared to head it.

        • MikeV Nov 12,2015 3:32 pm || Up

          Yeah, it’s less of an issue than people think at that age.

          Then again, this applies to USSF Academy teams and MLS academies. They’re a little bit higher on the skill level than my kids are.

    According to other Republicans, some in the party establishment are so desperate to change the dynamic that they are talking anew about drafting Romney — despite his insistence that he will not run again. Friends have mapped out a strategy for a late entry to pick up delegates and vie for the nomination in a convention fight, according to the Republicans, who were briefed on the talks, though Romney has shown no indication of reviving his interest.

              This would seem to be true, and I’m all for trying to bring people out of poverty. But there have been several articles like this one that say the data on poverty and terrorism don’t line up the way we intuitively think it would.

              • Future Ed Nov 15,2015 11:28 am || Up

                i don’t have data. but that study and other articles, to me, miss the mark.

                yes, the actors that commit the crimes are more well off, but that doesn’t tell the story. their privilge allows them to have the time and money to act like total dicks.

                those people aren’t the daesh fighters in syria. they aren’t the Hezbollah fighers, they aren’t the boko harem dick heads.

                yeah, people that fly planes into buildings are the stanford bros of the middle east, but that doesn’t mean that is the end of the analysis.

                again, talking out my ass. would be my theory to study if I was smart with numbers and research and stuff.

                  I know what you mean about separating rank & file fighters in the conflicts and the terrorists who carry out complex plots. All I was trying to say was that I was pretty convinced that the poverty issue was paramount, but reading other articles that reference this kind of data (I just linked the first one I found, but have read others over the past year or so) has made me at least question my assumptions. Not sure how the US Army made it into Iran in 1980. And I don’t think our troops went into Sudan, just our missiles.

              Serbia is a little bit provocative too.

                It’s an interesting distinction as the US military increasingly relies on missiles and drones rather than boots of the ground.

                I’m guessing they refer to Operations Eagle Claw, Infinite Reach and Allied Force (though the latter two involved cruise missiles and the air force respectively.)

                There’s a reasonable list of the official deployments here, though if you were to include all the CIA-led mercenary operations the list would get a lot longer.

                  Also, one of the biggest factors that makes it so hard is just how many people live here. For quality of life for just so many people, it certainly is up there, but then so is Jeter.

      That seems like a really good deal for the Giants (but with some risk on account of the length and no-trade clause). He was 4.7 fWAR this past season (but a lot of that is from a great UZR, so grain of salt) and he has been at least 2 WAR for the past four seasons. Plus he’s still only 28.

    This seems like a no-brainer to me. He was awesome in four late-season starts for Boston and if that’s a fluke, well it’s just $6/1. Also, Dave Cameron had him as one of the bargains of the 2016 free agent class, with a contract estimate that is exactly what the A’s gave him.

      When I moved from the East Bay to Tahoe my biggest doubt was how I’d handle the winter weather. I’m now entering my seventh Sierra winter, the last few of which have been pretty dry but there was one Snowpocalypse year. I’ve dealt fine with the snow and when it’s not snowing it’s usually sunny and not all that cold, over freezing for a few hours almost every day anyway. Statistically Cedar Rapids is quite a bit colder, on average 10 degrees at both ends of the thermometer, and the relentlessness of that would discourage regular winter outdoor activity for me. If you find those chilly damp fogs in Fresno to be mentally depressing I think Cedar Rapids winters would be tough.

        Actually the fog is one of the things I will miss the most. I’m not a fan of snow though. But if that was the worst feature I think I could do it.

        Honestly though I just dont see my giving Iowa a try. In PHX area I can still have affordable houses, there are things to do, and I can even fly up to PDX to see the eldest Ace without breaking the bank.

        Now I just need to finish the interview process.

          I like Phoenix well enough for a week to ten days in March. Not a fan of the infinite sprawl…Orange County in the desert. If your job is in Chandler you don’t want to commute from Surprise. Are you taking other Aces with you wherever you go or are you considering handing them off to Mrs. Ace? Fresno to Phoenix seems like as easy an adjustment as that could ever be for kids; Cedar Rapids might be kind of a shock to them.

            The childrens will be with me. And yeah, I think it will be an easier transition there as far as sprawl, weather, and whatever else I can think of. I really still want to figure out a way to get up to Oregon. I think that would be more of a shock, but would be great in the long run. But for now going somewhere that includes a paycheck will be a fantastic option.

      It’s not as beautiful as Ames, and is uncomfortably (for me) too close to Iowa City. I think CR is the 2nd largest city in Iowa – they have their own TV network affiliates. I don’t believe there is much in the way of airline service to CR – the closest airport with service not coming from Allegiant (DON’T FLY THEM) would be in the Quad Cities. No Amtrak, either, since Amtrak runs through southern Iowa where nobody lives. From CR, you are about 2 hours from Des Moines, 4 hours to Minneapolis, and 4-5 hours to Chicago.

      Weather – The winters can be brutally cold. Spring weather can be exciting, as well as summer. Summers have a fair amount of heat and humidity, but also it was not uncommon to have a day with highs in the mid-70s and low humidity. Unfortunately, these usually come after severe weather events. You will have to take the severe weather advisories seriously. CR is on a river (I’ll give you one guess what river that is), so there is the possibility of flooding in the area of the river.

      People – Iowans are typically friendly folk. Cedar Rapids will be somewhat less diverse than Fresno, but should also have less in the way of crime.

      Should you move there, find somewhere to live away from soy bean processing plants – they have a tendency to not smell very good.

        Yeah, Chandler is more and more in the wheelhouse. I like the idea of being near a real airport since family will all be out of state. And I love the idea of an airport with Southwest so if I want to fly more than I do now (never) I can sometimes do it and not break the bank.

        Now (if I get the job of course) I just need to see if there are season ticket ST packages…

            When I was looking this stuff up I think I saw 32 inches of snow as an annual average in Cedar Rapids? That’s not a lot; one blizzard, a couple of headaches and several light snowfalls. The temperature looks like the bigger issue there. Fortunately the learning curve for driving on ice is fairly sharp. I wore egg on my face in a ditch one day my first winter in snow country, have not had any difficulty since. Flipping to snow tires from November 1-April 15 is a bit of a pain plus a big one-time expense, but it helps enormously.

            Meanwhile Bernie:

            Decisions [have] consequences, often unintended consequences. So whether it was Saddam, or Mossadegh [in Iran in 1953], or Guatemalan President Árbenz in 1954, Brazilian President Goulart in 1964, Chilean President Allende in 1973. This type of regime change, this type of overthrowing governments we may not like, often does not work, often makes a bad or difficult [situation] even worse. These are lessons we must learn.

            So FKing refreshing to hear a US politician acknowledge that history.

            One thing that concerns me about the President Sanders scenario is how little support he’d have in Congress – maybe a dozen votes? Ultimately I don’t think he’d be able to get anything he’s proposing done, and yet he’d be blamed for that failure and the ensuing disillusionment could knock popular progressive politics hard.

    Coming to the end of the third season, I’ve seen enough. Sonny Dykes needs to coach in a conference where nobody plays any defense. If I’m a star high school defensive player with the academics to go to either Cal or Stanford, I can’t see why I’d choose Cal under the Dykes regime.

    Sure, I want to beat Furd, but honestly if they lay 50 points on us again that should build momentum for shipping Dykes’ ass back to Texas (he’d be a career 0-12 against USC, UCLA, Oregon and Stanford), so I wouldn’t be as devastated as you might think.

      Maybe he should go coach in Canada with Tedford.

    • mother pucker Nov 21,2015 11:40 am || Up

      He should not be a head coach at any level. The head coach is responsible for all facets of the team, not just running a gimmick-offense that fails against any top-25 defense.

      Then last week I read that the interim-to-now-full-time AD Mike Williams wants to sign him to a fking extension? Mind boggling. Cal Football is not getting a fking dime from me until Dykes is gone.

      • Soaker Dec 1,2015 6:10 pm || Up

        Dykes has reportedly interviewed at Mizzou. I don’t see him being any more successful in the SEC than the Pac-12 (try to find something in the Big 12, dumbass, even an OC job for a year or two), but whatever it takes to get him out of Berkeley, regardless of the loss of this year’s recruiting class, I’m all for it. His shit just don’t work in the Pac-12.

        Mike Williams said the right things with a couple weeks to go, “Gee, we’re thinking about an extension for Coach Dykes”, without committing. A wise move. Get rid of this putrid final vestige of the Barbour era and move on with eyes on the 2019 or 2020 Rose Bowl.

        Seems more likely than not that an interim coach will guide the Bears in the Motel 6 Cactus Bowl; I figure we’ll get an answer in a matter of days now.

      I don’t really have a dog in this fight. I usually pull for Cal since my dad taught there back in the 60’s. The thing I REALLY REALLY HATE about this year’s Big Game is that it is at 7:30 pm. FK ESPN.

      • Soaker Nov 21,2015 12:51 pm || Up

        When the Pac-10/12 presidents hired Larry Scott, his Priority One mandate was to increase football television revenue. Pac-12 Networks has been a toe stub, but otherwise he’s done a terrific job at that. In the process, though, he gave away all scheduling decisions to Disney/ESPN and Fox, and Pac-12 games are their best/only late night Eastern Time option, so often three games have late kicks each week plus there’s one on Thursday or Friday. Furd has been screwed over more than anybody this season, every home game under the lights which would piss me off extremely if I’d paid a lot of money to be a priority season ticket holder.

        I don’t blame ESPN so much as I blame the university presidents for taking the easy TV money and telling the ticket buyers, tough shit.

    Last night’s game was truly one for the ages. Goff plays perhaps the best game of his entire career (considering the stage); the receivers fight harder than they have all year for separation; the line holds up reasonably well; the defense does a fine job in pass coverage made enough stops to have a shot at winning; and then Dykes happens. The Bears SBN blog does a pretty strong re-cap, IMO. I think my favorite line was this though

    “Tom Holmoe: 12-21 in first three years at Cal, 7-17 in Pac-10, 3 Big Game losses

    Sonny Dykes: 12-23 in first three years at Cal, 6-20 in Pac-12, 3 Big Game losses”

    Just get him the fuck out of there!

    • Soaker Nov 22,2015 9:48 am || Up

      Problem is, Dykes has two more years remaining on his contract and there’s no reason for him to leave voluntarily because who the hell would hire him? So if we don’t want to pay him off (and there was a similar situation with Holmoe) this is what we might be looking at:

      Tom Holmoe: 4-18 in years 4-5 at Cal, 2-14 in Pac-10, 2 Big Game losses

      Sonny Dykes: uggggghhhhhh

      I always felt sorriest for Kyle Boller. He was in Holmoe’s “offense” for his first three years and only had Tedford for his senior season. I thought if he’d had two seasons with Tedford he might have become something in the NFL.
