Out with the old grill, in with the new.
Mr. Jamie Kotsay is back, y’all, to coach the bench with the hustle, grit, and bad back we all loved so much.
I have no other baseball to report, but let’s talk soccer!!
Big World Cup qualifier tonight between Brazil and Messiless Argentina. Could Brazil miss a World Cup for the first time? (My take: nah.)
Meanwhile, two of France’s best players are, per court order, not allowed to be in the same place at the same time because one of them was recorded coordinating a blackmail scheme against the other over release of a sex tape. France stay France.
No more heading the ball for the littlest players in the USA. How will coach Future Ed adjust his tactics?
Post, FKers. Post against the dying of the light.
happy birthday colin
thanks!
I don’t see how you stop kids from doing headers. and why are there so many shirtless boys in that picture?
Teach them to control the ball with their chest and then their feet.
That said, generally below U10 the ball is never high enough in the air for headers anyway.
A good side effect will be kids learning to be more technical. Less goalies punting the ball, more building up out of the back (that’s one of the only times the ball actually goes high enough for headers), short corner kicks or more attempts at volleys, etc.
Thanks, and go As.
There’s maybe one header a game in my kid’s U-10 league. The ball is high enough to be headed more often than that, but most of the boys are too scared to head it.
Yeah, it’s less of an issue than people think at that age.
Then again, this applies to USSF Academy teams and MLS academies. They’re a little bit higher on the skill level than my kids are.
Thanks, and go As.
FK the superbowl
but i may put my place on air b and b
That whole thing is going to be very annoying.

I may drive my car up there and rent it out for people to sleep in.
Tar Heels open the hoops season vs Temple tomorrow night. Pre-season #1!
Pre-season #16 Cal has a mostly very soft non-conference schedule (University of the Incarnate Word???), but December 22 at pre-season #6 Virginia should be fun.
Fun if you like your CBB scores in the 50s.
Oh, yeah. Screw that.
January 10th, March 1st. The rest of the year we can be friends.
So I gather the A’s concluded that last year’s chemistry problem was Aldrete’s fault.
But Aldrete is still there. It was obviously a Waller issue. Those 1B coaches can be cancer!
Is bench coach to 1B coach a demotion? One does nothing of note, the other one also does nothing of note but sits close to the manager.
Cant have some Dylan Thomas without the best version of it ever:

Argentina-Brazil unofficially postponed because, well…
But we’ve still got Colombia-Chile!
Also 24 hours until Matt Miazga (HAD FKING BETTER BE) cap tied!
Thanks, and go As.
I think he starts. Nagbe too.
Man I don’t think it happens, but I’d love to see this, at least against St Vincent.
Morris – Wood
Ibarra – Nagbe – Bradley – FabJo
Shea – Miazga – Cameron – Yedlin
Hamid
Thanks, and go As.
My guess:
Morris (or Wood) – Altidore
Johnson – Nagbe – Bradley – Yedlin
Ream – Besler – Miazga – Cameron
Guzan
(He’ll probably get Jones in there somehow though.)
and Beckerman.
Thanks, and go As.
Wouldn’t mind rocking a 3-5-2
Morris – Wood
Johnson – Nagbe – Jones – Bradley – Yedlin
Ream – Cameron – Miazga
FIFA Prez candidate Tokyo Sexwale has strong competition in the great name department from Jérôme Champagne.
Wait a minute…there’s someone named Tokyo Sexwale? This is a real person? I love it.
oh.
Thanks, and go As.
Thanks, and go As.
FK off, Aybar.
Simmons is clearly the better player, but I’m still glad that Aybar is getting the FK out of our division.
I thought Simmons got traded to HBO.
i don’t like this trade.
Neither do I. I really enjoy watching Andrelton play, and although I don’t have any sympathies for the Braves, I don’t take them seriously as a team at this point and don’t really feel like their games are played for keeps.
exactly
LOL
I think if Romney had ran he’d be doing better as the establishment candidate than Jeb! is.
I always love the first “brokered convention” theory of the cycle. Political reporters want one of those so bad.
Oh we hear it every time and it never happens…it’s almost impossible mathematically the way the primaries are set up. But, yeah it gets Chris Matthews all hot and bothered.
The Bills in head-to-toe red versus the Jets in head-to-toe green is an assault on the eyeballs of America.
Football uniforms with contrasting pants and jerseys look so good. Why would you ever mess with that? It’s insane.
There’s nothing pretty about Thursday Night Football.
where did these uni’s come from? Is it a throwback game? They are truly terrible.
No, AFAIK this is the first time the Bills have ever worn solid red.
I sincerely hope it is also the last.
Nike. Special for TNFB
I would be extremely happy if the guys in the ugly red uniforms would bother to get a couple of first downs against the guys in the ugly green uniforms.
which one is that?
I want to watch the full game like that. That’s fucking crazy. Would be funny if the officiating crew was color blind too.
The Daniel Craig Bond films are like the San Francisco Giants…they’re great every other time out.
Casino Royale – World Series Win
Something of Solace? – 4th Place Finish
Skyfall – World Series Win
Spectre – 3rd Place Finish
Agree 100%. And the Sam Smith song is a pathetic effort.
That song was so bland. I don’t even remember it and we saw the movie last night. The whole movie is kind of bland really so maybe it was the perfect song.
Probably my favorite part of the whole movie was how in the opening scene he was wearing a suit under his suit.
Also, was I supposed to care about the female character? Like at all? Because even by Bond standards, she was bland.
Also also, the drill device thing didn’t do anything that Blofeld said it would? Was I watching Bond or Powers?
She was a bit of a bore, pretty, but a bore. The woman that Craig had the best chemistry with in all his Bond films was Judi Dench as M…I missed her character in this movie.
I love the nerdy Q though.
The Sacramento Kings are the hilarious mess I was hoping for…if you’re going to be awful be awful in an entertaining way.
Vivek is on an impressive streak of bad decisions. Just one right after the other.
I’m assuming the man is intelligent due to his business success but so far his basketball owner IQ seems to be in the single digits.
They do have Divac as GM
I loved watching Divac as a player…as a GM we’ll have to see.
I met him a few times. Never struck me as a GM material.
Marshmallows in hot chocolate.
Yes or No?
Yes, preferably mini. But the other day I was at some fancy San Francisco store that only sold vegan marshmallows. Those were not good in hot chocolate, or at all.
(Bed thinks about a world with vegan marshmallows in it…Bed goes off for a good cry.)
What non-vegan ingredients are there in a marshmallow? Gelatin?
Yeah. Also they probably pay more attention to whether bone char was used to process the sugar (but sugar is sugar in the end).
I take my hot chocolate straight. (Insert whichever joke you prefer here.)
Let’s say you have 7-10 days to spend in either France, Spain, England, or Italy….where do you go? We’re looking for our first trip away from the kids vacation in June.
Columbus.
Thanks, and go As.
june is expensive, but i would say spain. having only been to england
Italy! I love me some Rome as a history nerd, and anyone who doesn’t love Florence is definitionally evil.
Plus, the coasts are fantastic.
France! 7-10 days is a great amount of time to spend in Paris (with a day trip or three to Versailles / Normandy / Giverny / Riems)
Italy for the food, culture, people, and overall way of life.
But wherever it is, don’t spread it too thin … you’ll never do the whole country, so do 2-3 days each in 3-4 cities.
Thanks for the tips everyone.
I’ve decided to spend the rest of my life rebuilding The Ottoman Empire.
I sure do love a good couch fort.

Man, Bed. You may have to kiss my ass goodbye. This concert was good. I’m trying to break in a new pair of boots though, and my toes look like little sausages now. I needed this tonight. I’m glad I didn’t end with last week’s concert. You know, hysterical bawling and having to be consoled by strangers. I sang and danced and it felt good again.
just your ass or???
Thanks, and go As.
Anything for you Mike.
yay
Thanks, and go As.
It sounds like you had a hell of a good time…we should all try and have as many of those as we can in life.
I’m trying.
I will be at Shoreline on May 26th with Old man Bob Smith and a few thousand of our friends. I think I have enough time to grow my hair silly and buy up all the black guyliner available in the US.
As a fellow Fresno person maybe you could ask Derek Carr where he gets his.
My nephews are actually friends with Derek (younger one was a contemporary valley HS QB)and I met him at a birthday party just before his Jr year at FSU. Unfortunately I found out he wears no guyliner. Just manscara.
Levi’s Stadium will be a Copa America Centenario venue next summer. I’m sure they’ll stick us with Trinidad & Tobago vs. Paraguay or something.
That’s a lot of Denorfia.
Uh, so is Trump actually going to get the nomination?
Holy shit, Paris :(
Thanks, and go As.
Every time I look at my TV the death toll is higher. It is horrifying what humans do to each other.
I guess I won’t be flying there tomorrow after all.
Yeah. Please don’t.
Of course, now the question is how much does the western world overreact (vs. find/punish the people responsible) and magnify the suffering caused.
Or start reacting in the same way to the comparable atrocities happening every week across the Arab world, often at Western hands.
bingo
You mean like how everybody changed their status to sympathize with Beirut a few days ago, and it dominated all the news?
that’s literally just killing an arab
That and all the “Ez Yazidi im” posts.
I have no idea what the solution is but I have resigned myself to the fact that our country is likely to be in some sort of war for the rest of my lifetime.
the solution is money. always has been. if the koch’s, warlords, heads of state stop accumuaing all the wealth and distributed equitably around the world, people will stop killing each other
This would seem to be true, and I’m all for trying to bring people out of poverty. But there have been several articles like this one that say the data on poverty and terrorism don’t line up the way we intuitively think it would.
i don’t have data. but that study and other articles, to me, miss the mark.
yes, the actors that commit the crimes are more well off, but that doesn’t tell the story. their privilge allows them to have the time and money to act like total dicks.
those people aren’t the daesh fighters in syria. they aren’t the Hezbollah fighers, they aren’t the boko harem dick heads.
yeah, people that fly planes into buildings are the stanford bros of the middle east, but that doesn’t mean that is the end of the analysis.
again, talking out my ass. would be my theory to study if I was smart with numbers and research and stuff.
I know what you mean about separating rank & file fighters in the conflicts and the terrorists who carry out complex plots. All I was trying to say was that I was pretty convinced that the poverty issue was paramount, but reading other articles that reference this kind of data (I just linked the first one I found, but have read others over the past year or so) has made me at least question my assumptions. Maybe the politics & religion really are as much of an influence as decent shelter and food on the table.
probably we get to worry about who is “disrespecting” us after we have food
i think the charie hebdo guys were poor
What language are the countries written in? At first I thought there were a few misspellings, but thinking more it seems like it’s a foreign language.
Thanks, and go As.
And why skip the ’70s?
you need a list of reasons?
Looks like German.
It’s in German. It was on a German FB page, too, so I assume it was shot somewhere in Germany.
danke!
Thanks, and go As.
Not sure how the US Army made it into Iran in 1980. And I don’t think our troops went into Sudan, just our missiles.
Serbia is a little bit provocative too.
I’m sure there are inaccuracies in it, you are right.
It’s an interesting distinction as the US military increasingly relies on missiles and drones rather than boots of the ground.
I’m guessing they refer to Operations Eagle Claw, Infinite Reach and Allied Force (though the latter two involved cruise missiles and the air force respectively.)
There’s a reasonable list of the official deployments here, though if you were to include all the CIA-led mercenary operations the list would get a lot longer.
I stand corrected on Iran! That’s quite a list, isn’t it.
Impressive list
USA! USA!
Number One, indeed
The more I think about it, the more I come to the conclusion that USA is Derek Jeter of the world countries. Pretty good overall, with some aspects of it being really, really good, but with sometimes unbearable hype-machine and its loudest fan base lacking grasp on reality and basic education.
so, we’re nummber 2?
heh
FKwiz: Jeter has the 3rd highest career WAR of any player wearing #2. Who are 1st and 2nd?
12 parts of Rickey.
That’s a trick question, because the two players ahead of him accrued most of their WAR wearing other numbers
Just by hearing about it, I wouldn’t mind living in Scandinavia somewhere.
They’re kinda not fond of Americans though aren’t they?
Thanks, and go As.
The winters are pretty suicidal, but apart from that, it’s pretty cool
Honest question. Who is #1 and why?
Also, one of the biggest factors that makes it so hard is just how many people live here. For quality of life for just so many people, it certainly is up there, but then so is Jeter.
Also, obligatory video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMqcLUqYqrs
Ozzie Smith.
I have no clue. I think there is no clear #1 overall. Perhaps it is possible to define front-runners for many specific segments, though…
You are number 6.
Ripe for a remake.
Keep on dancing Jennifer.
Just deleted 4 more spam-posts from 5 Aces’ account.
And 3 more this morning.
Relentless.
Thanks, and go As.
That seems like a really good deal for the Giants (but with some risk on account of the length and no-trade clause). He was 4.7 fWAR this past season (but a lot of that is from a great UZR, so grain of salt) and he has been at least 2 WAR for the past four seasons. Plus he’s still only 28.
they seem to do pretty well with their developed players, lincicum excluded (although i supposed the did pretty well not signing him to an 8 year deal after 2010
The Matt Cain contract looks pretty terrible. They dodged the Lincecum bullet and stepped right into a different one.
totally forgot he sucked and is injured.
I will look back on the Raiders Aldon Smith era fondly.
I guess nine games were better than nothing.
This seems like a no-brainer to me. He was awesome in four late-season starts for Boston and if that’s a fluke, well it’s just $6/1. Also, Dave Cameron had him as one of the bargains of the 2016 free agent class, with a contract estimate that is exactly what the A’s gave him.
Excellent!
Eno Sarris has an interesting article exploring the idea that the A’s have been targeting pitchers with crappy changeups and good curveballs (or maybe it’s just groundball-inducing changeups instead of swing-and-miss changeups).
Even if he was a fluke he goes to the bullpen and cant be worse than most of Team Dynamite.
so, was columbia supposed to beat argentina?
paging AV….
I would have favored Colombia to at least get a draw considering all of Argentina’s injuries.
So David Ortiz is gonna retire.
You think anybody will mention how much of a POS he is?
Thanks, and go As.
Nope. Just how much more deserving he is than Edgar because ZOMG RED SOX.
I hope the Hall voters have evolved that much…
edgar who?
Cayce
Or how lucky that Mitchell was a Red Sox fan.
elcroata, I think this guy just raised the bar for you.

you have the baby yet?
That’s why I wanted to post the picture.
Theodore was born on Saturday.
Congrats g!
Thanks.
woohoo.
good name
Thanks. I was fascinated by Theodore Roosevelt as a kid.
Me too! To this day I still ride roughly and bust trusts in his honor.
Congrats grover!
Heh.
Thanks.
great news – congratulations!
Thank you.
Awww I love the name!! Congrats!!
Thank you.
Fantastic – many congrats.
Many thanks.
How was the labor/delivery? Everyone doing well?
Labor lasted just under 13 hours. Mom and son are doing great.
Woohoo!
Thanks, and go As.
Thanks.
It’s a transition but everyone seems to be making it work. My eldest has even helped with morning wake-up and has given his brother a theme song!
Oh, maybe I wouldn’t put a more personal pic like that on imgur. Congrats!
I’ll trust a FKer but not imgur.
And thanks.
Here’s the picture grover sent me, Oakland’s #1 draft choice in 2037. Congratulations grover and Mrs. grover! It’s not too early to start working on his left-handed throwing.
I plan on encouraging any southpaw tendencies. And since he doesn’t keep his eyes open much during story time I’ve already started reading him scouting reports from my 2015 BA Prospect Handbook.
Because it’s not what you read, but how you read it that matters.
Contrats!
Thank you.
Congrats!
Thank you.
Congrats!!
Thank you.
Aww! Squishy cheeks!
Attention FKers who know all:
What can you tell me about Cedar Rapids, IA? I am putting the cart before the horse, but there is a job that I think I may have a good shot at. I will be need to relocate to either Cedar Rapids or Chandler, AZ. I’ve been to the PHX area enough that I get the gist of it but I know nothing about Cedar Rapids. What little I have seen on-line does not make me want to go there, but I figured if anyone could come up with reasons I should consider one over the other it is you all.
I know nothing, but wanted to wish you well with your job search
@5Aces isn’t Cedar Rapids home to one Ryan Sweeney?
I’m not sure. But a Swingles sighting is not going to move the Aces meter much.
Thank you. I am going to put your recommendation on my resume now-that should be worth an extra 20-30k a year…
Might need to check other threads to see if DoctorK replied in the wrong place.
heh!
When I moved from the East Bay to Tahoe my biggest doubt was how I’d handle the winter weather. I’m now entering my seventh Sierra winter, the last few of which have been pretty dry but there was one Snowpocalypse year. I’ve dealt fine with the snow and when it’s not snowing it’s usually sunny and not all that cold, over freezing for a few hours almost every day anyway. Statistically Cedar Rapids is quite a bit colder, on average 10 degrees at both ends of the thermometer, and the relentlessness of that would discourage regular winter outdoor activity for me. If you find those chilly damp fogs in Fresno to be mentally depressing I think Cedar Rapids winters would be tough.
Actually the fog is one of the things I will miss the most. I’m not a fan of snow though. But if that was the worst feature I think I could do it.
Honestly though I just dont see my giving Iowa a try. In PHX area I can still have affordable houses, there are things to do, and I can even fly up to PDX to see the eldest Ace without breaking the bank.
Now I just need to finish the interview process.
I like Phoenix well enough for a week to ten days in March. Not a fan of the infinite sprawl…Orange County in the desert. If your job is in Chandler you don’t want to commute from Surprise. Are you taking other Aces with you wherever you go or are you considering handing them off to Mrs. Ace? Fresno to Phoenix seems like as easy an adjustment as that could ever be for kids; Cedar Rapids might be kind of a shock to them.
The childrens will be with me. And yeah, I think it will be an easier transition there as far as sprawl, weather, and whatever else I can think of. I really still want to figure out a way to get up to Oregon. I think that would be more of a shock, but would be great in the long run. But for now going somewhere that includes a paycheck will be a fantastic option.
I recommend mowing down your cornfield and building a baseball field.
Thanks, and go As.
Midwest League ball should be affordable. He can become a Cedar Rapids Kernels season ticket holder, enjoy the development of the exciting young Twins prospects (well, until the Giants take over the affiliation) and laugh at the zany antics of the mascot, “Mr. Shucks”.
The first thing I looked at-even before weather and prices- was affiliations. I think I may have a problem.
It’s not as beautiful as Ames, and is uncomfortably (for me) too close to Iowa City. I think CR is the 2nd largest city in Iowa – they have their own TV network affiliates. I don’t believe there is much in the way of airline service to CR – the closest airport with service not coming from Allegiant (DON’T FLY THEM) would be in the Quad Cities. No Amtrak, either, since Amtrak runs through southern Iowa where nobody lives. From CR, you are about 2 hours from Des Moines, 4 hours to Minneapolis, and 4-5 hours to Chicago.
Weather – The winters can be brutally cold. Spring weather can be exciting, as well as summer. Summers have a fair amount of heat and humidity, but also it was not uncommon to have a day with highs in the mid-70s and low humidity. Unfortunately, these usually come after severe weather events. You will have to take the severe weather advisories seriously. CR is on a river (I’ll give you one guess what river that is), so there is the possibility of flooding in the area of the river.
People – Iowans are typically friendly folk. Cedar Rapids will be somewhat less diverse than Fresno, but should also have less in the way of crime.
Should you move there, find somewhere to live away from soy bean processing plants – they have a tendency to not smell very good.
Yeah, Chandler is more and more in the wheelhouse. I like the idea of being near a real airport since family will all be out of state. And I love the idea of an airport with Southwest so if I want to fly more than I do now (never) I can sometimes do it and not break the bank.
Now (if I get the job of course) I just need to see if there are season ticket ST packages…
Iowa is also cheaper than AZ.
This is well-timed.
When I was looking this stuff up I think I saw 32 inches of snow as an annual average in Cedar Rapids? That’s not a lot; one blizzard, a couple of headaches and several light snowfalls. The temperature looks like the bigger issue there. Fortunately the learning curve for driving on ice is fairly sharp. I wore egg on my face in a ditch one day my first winter in snow country, have not had any difficulty since. Flipping to snow tires from November 1-April 15 is a bit of a pain plus a big one-time expense, but it helps enormously.
My first fall in Iowa featured a major blizzard right after Thanksgiving. I was driving home from my uncle’s house in Illinois through the Quad Cities when I quickly found out what that shiny black stuff on the road was.
Dear Aces:
Cedar Rapids sucks.
Sincerely, UNC Tar Heels
That’s Cedar Falls. Speaking of, I can’t believe Roy actually agreed to play a game there.
Roy should be used to losing visits to Iowa (State).
Wait, Iowa has two different cities names after water features near cedar trees? #DullMidwest.
Have you ever looked at the names of Chicago suburbs? Oak Park, Forest Park, River Forest, River Grove, Forest View, Glenview, Orland Park, Tinley Park, …
Or the streets in Atlanta! Peachtree Blvd., Peachtree Street, Peachtree Lane, Peachtree Center Avenue Northeast…
I chuckled at that particular banana peel slip, but would also say the Fedoras don’t have to settle for the Whogivesacrap Bowl vs. Cal, they’re going to do much better than that even after the loss to Clemson.
I will not fall into the once-a-decade trap of optimistically thinking the Heels could play in a meaningful bowl game.
We both have reason to despise Cedar Falls, or at least the team that resides therein.
So, Ed, when you are “sequestered”, who do I contact if I want to crash in your place?
Ah yes. We interned Japanese-Americans, and we ended up winning that war. So it worked. Brilliant.
On the bright side, we may finally get a case that allows the Supreme Court to overrule Korematsu!
**COUGH**
Bonus points for use of word “adduced”.
Turns out Korematsu has been “overruled in the court of history“!
So the court of the present decided to replace it with a 21st Century equivalent.
I have not read the other shitballs opinion, but could california legislate around it? Like requiring medical professionals be in chagre of reproductive health centers? Then the staff could not lie to “clients?”
Not sure doctors can do much about the immigration policy. But I’m open to the idea. Hey, you’re sick. You must stay and can’t travel back home.
Also, when you want to show just how welcoming your city is and what a melting pot of the world it is, it is always the best tactic to invoke the memories of your country’s internment camps for their own citizens.
its just me and my kids.
slf is jewish, she’ll get the place.
come to think of it, she should demand ta get my grandparents property in israel
It’s no big deal. I’m sure you ask for jurors to be “sequestered” all the time.
And hey, it’s just “for a while into the future.” I’m sure these guys will stop soiling their diapers soon and you can rejoin society.
50 dems in the house.
embarrassing
Meanwhile Bernie:
So FKing refreshing to hear a US politician acknowledge that history.
Word
One thing that concerns me about the President Sanders scenario is how little support he’d have in Congress – maybe a dozen votes? Ultimately I don’t think he’d be able to get anything he’s proposing done, and yet he’d be blamed for that failure and the ensuing disillusionment could knock popular progressive politics hard.
Carter!
Facing a much less insane (though more cunningly treasonous) Republican opposition, still drummed out as a failure and only rehabilitated over the long term.
Of course if the hostage rescue had succeeded …
I like Jimmy Carter but he wasn’t a good President. He micromanaged too much and he didn’t do a good job when he hired staff. A very decent man though.
The 70’s have a lot of odd “what-if’s”:
-What if Nixon doesnt play dirty tricks (or get caught)?
-What if Ford doesnt pardon Nixon, or finds a way to do something less smelly to folks?
-As was mentioned, what if Carter pulls off the hostage rescue?
What if’s is my favorite history game…I wrote a really long paper in college about the 1960 Presidential election and how different things might have been if Nixon had beat Kennedy. Bay of Pigs, Cuban Missile Crisis, JFK assassination, Vietnam, Watergate, Resignation…all of these either wouldn’t have happened or could have been replaced by something better or worse.
Give us a spark notes. Best case for the change in the 60s if Nixon beats JFK and its long term consequences. Then, worst case.
I’d be interested.
The best one was James Garfield
There was a president named after a cat? Yeah, right.
Next you’ll be telling me there was a president named after a teddy bear.
Bill Murray voiced his presidency.
Bed, where does Garfield rank on your all-time-list?
Awesome.
Thanks, and go As.
Josh Donaldson wins MVP. Didn’t he used to play here?
All but one of the 15 AL teams had at least one player get at least one vote.
THANKS AGAIN BILLY WITHOUT YOU WE WOULD HAVE BEEN A 76 WIN TEAM THIS YEAR
Thanks, and go As.
Bryce Harper!
I would like for Billy to go and trade for Ozuna and Fernandez. Thanks.
Thanks, and go As.
Just finished up the SB Nation Offseason Sim a couple days ago.
Landed Ozuna. Fernandez was… well, gotten but pricey by someone else.
I do think Ozuna is gettable… my guess is it would take one os Bassitt or Hahn. I’d prefer it be Hahn, due to the fickleness of his elbow.
I’d probably deal either one of them.
Thanks, and go As.
rule 5 season makes me think of choosing cards to discard in gin
I will miss Jesse Chavez. A great Athletic and one of my favorites of the recent years. I guess his A’s teammates felt the same.
I’m glad we have an Aussie back on the roster though.
So we are putting our stater hopes in one bassit?
Totally agree re: Chavez. Definitely my favorite A over the last two seasons, and perhaps from the entire Melvin era.
the yankees and red sox are playing on tv
Coming to the end of the third season, I’ve seen enough. Sonny Dykes needs to coach in a conference where nobody plays any defense. If I’m a star high school defensive player with the academics to go to either Cal or Stanford, I can’t see why I’d choose Cal under the Dykes regime.
Sure, I want to beat Furd, but honestly if they lay 50 points on us again that should build momentum for shipping Dykes’ ass back to Texas (he’d be a career 0-12 against USC, UCLA, Oregon and Stanford), so I wouldn’t be as devastated as you might think.
Maybe he should go coach in Canada with Tedford.
He should not be a head coach at any level. The head coach is responsible for all facets of the team, not just running a gimmick-offense that fails against any top-25 defense.
Then last week I read that the interim-to-now-full-time AD Mike Williams wants to sign him to a fking extension? Mind boggling. Cal Football is not getting a fking dime from me until Dykes is gone.
Dykes has reportedly interviewed at Mizzou. I don’t see him being any more successful in the SEC than the Pac-12 (try to find something in the Big 12, dumbass, even an OC job for a year or two), but whatever it takes to get him out of Berkeley, regardless of the loss of this year’s recruiting class, I’m all for it. His shit just don’t work in the Pac-12.
Mike Williams said the right things with a couple weeks to go, “Gee, we’re thinking about an extension for Coach Dykes”, without committing. A wise move. Get rid of this putrid final vestige of the Barbour era and move on with eyes on the 2019 or 2020 Rose Bowl.
Seems more likely than not that an interim coach will guide the Bears in the Motel 6 Cactus Bowl; I figure we’ll get an answer in a matter of days now.
I don’t really have a dog in this fight. I usually pull for Cal since my dad taught there back in the 60’s. The thing I REALLY REALLY HATE about this year’s Big Game is that it is at 7:30 pm. FK ESPN.
When the Pac-10/12 presidents hired Larry Scott, his Priority One mandate was to increase football television revenue. Pac-12 Networks has been a toe stub, but otherwise he’s done a terrific job at that. In the process, though, he gave away all scheduling decisions to Disney/ESPN and Fox, and Pac-12 games are their best/only late night Eastern Time option, so often three games have late kicks each week plus there’s one on Thursday or Friday. Furd has been screwed over more than anybody this season, every home game under the lights which would piss me off extremely if I’d paid a lot of money to be a priority season ticket holder.
I don’t blame ESPN so much as I blame the university presidents for taking the easy TV money and telling the ticket buyers, tough shit.
There was a time back in the 90s or so, when the Pac-10 was so desperate to get on ESPN that it was scheduling basketball games to start at 9 pm pacific.
So this game will be over at what, midnight?
Kaep to IR.

So obviously he’s done in SF.
What’s weird to me is that he’s having elective surgery. Sure, get 100% and whatever for the next team he’s on.
People will slam the Niners for this one but what choice did they have
Thanks, and go As.
Wait, now Louisiana decides that David Vitter is too scummy for them?
Cal’s bad at football.
I do love me some McCaffrey.
Last night’s game was truly one for the ages. Goff plays perhaps the best game of his entire career (considering the stage); the receivers fight harder than they have all year for separation; the line holds up reasonably well; the defense does a fine job in pass coverage made enough stops to have a shot at winning; and then Dykes happens. The Bears SBN blog does a pretty strong re-cap, IMO. I think my favorite line was this though
“Tom Holmoe: 12-21 in first three years at Cal, 7-17 in Pac-10, 3 Big Game losses
Sonny Dykes: 12-23 in first three years at Cal, 6-20 in Pac-12, 3 Big Game losses”
Just get him the fuck out of there!
Problem is, Dykes has two more years remaining on his contract and there’s no reason for him to leave voluntarily because who the hell would hire him? So if we don’t want to pay him off (and there was a similar situation with Holmoe) this is what we might be looking at:
Tom Holmoe: 4-18 in years 4-5 at Cal, 2-14 in Pac-10, 2 Big Game losses
Sonny Dykes: uggggghhhhhh
I always felt sorriest for Kyle Boller. He was in Holmoe’s “offense” for his first three years and only had Tedford for his senior season. I thought if he’d had two seasons with Tedford he might have become something in the NFL.
