Since Céspedes participated in his first Home Run Derby in 2013 it’s been obvious that he loves the bright lights. Well, here’s his chance under the brightest. Keep Bob Geren from whispering too many of his brilliant ideas in Terry Collins’ ear and the Amazins would seem to have a pretty good chance of bringing home their third World Championship.
A few single-Series records Céspedes could challenge:
Home Runs: 5 (Reggie 1977 and Utley 2009)
RBI: 12 (Richardson 1960)
Total Bases: 25 (Reggie 1977 and Stargell 1979)
OPS: 2.433 (Gehrig 1928)
All first pitches are scheduled for 5:07 Pacific. Weather at Kaufmann Stadium and Citi Field looks mostly decent, for the first five games anyway.
Ew what was that creepy “disguising the identity of a witness” voiceover?
FK KC
I like the cut of your jib.
I feel like these are personal attacks on me.
If I had had to create the thread I was going to say “since everyone here EXCEPT JENNIFER wants the Mets to win…”
But no dear, we all love you still and understand your small imperfections. (If I lived right by them I might feel the same, who knows?)
I’m rooting for the Royals, as I have been all playoffs. I’ve liked them for years, don’t really care about them beating the A’s/having a team full of murderous psychopaths/etc. I like the laundry.
Fair enough-all the better I didnt make the post.
Let’s just stick with FK KC then.
If the A’s can’t ever win the thing then the Royals need to be the Buffalo Bil…oops never mind.
Better to not go there Soaker.
i will root for powder blue laundry if it were pants too.
The Fox telecast is on a huge delay. SiriusXM already has a several-second delay, and I’m having to delay the Mets broadcast by about 15 additional seconds to sync it. They must be afraid Harold Reynolds is going to say something REALLY offensive.
Oh brother, that was not a scintillating start.
Oh boy what was that.
I was about to come in and predict La Potencia as MVP. An inside the park HR without a throw home even makes me hedge that bet.
Sure there is a whole series to come back from that, but it sure felt like a harbinger at Casa de Aces. Hope Im wrong.
For those of us on the 51 bus, wtf happened?
1st pitch, fastball right down Broadway hit to deep CF. Cespy kicked it and it turned into a stand up inside-the-park HR.
And then threw him out at 5th, I assume.
Cespedes did that thing where he horribly boots the ball so he can throw someone out, but this time, it was on the fly, and it bounced too far away for him to throw it.
I want to +1 every comment you’ve made tonight.
Get a room…
But you just left that one comment? Wow, that’s really lazy.
Pretend I +1’d every comment.
KC news is reporting Edinson Volquez’s father died and Edinson doesn’t know. Uhhh.
That’s terrible.
There are now conflicting reports about whether or not he knows
Yeah. I dont know how I feel about that. Should he pitch, should he be told if he doesnt know? Guess Im just glad I have no hand in any of it and prayers to his family.
ESPN says Volquez knows. Poor guy.
Sometimes it’s a relief if it’s inevitable and life is pointlessly being extended. When my brother informed me that Mom had died I wasn’t sad, just went about my business which would have included even pitching a regular season game if that were my job, not to mention a World Series game. I don’t buy the “he wasn’t told” story; nobody is that callous.
Also it sounds like Zobrist’s wife is right at nine months. She said “I might not tell him I’m in labor” but Ben said “I would go”. I can never figure out why ballplayers don’t take preventive measures from about early December to early February.
He did get traded to the A’s in January, so he probably figured he was safe for a late October delivery.
Something I think is a really good idea is to have your elite defensive CF on the bench and your reasonably good defensive LF play in CF where he sucks because dammit YOU NEED KELLY JOHNSON IN THERE AT DH (batting 9th)
Thanks, and go As.
pretend I plus one everything that you say in this thread
Has Fox made no mention of the Volquez story?
TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES
Mets radio guys say the game is being delayed and have no idea what the reason is.
Now saying if the video feed is out they couldn’t review a dubious call.
Way to go Fox.
On the plus side, we’re getting several minutes without Joe Buck.
Way to go, Fox.
So Joe Buck and Harold Reynolds are off the air? The Series is looking up.
Refresh etc etc
The international feed features:
-People running the bases backwards (UK feed only)
-British boner commercials “Ello Guvner, got ta bit o’ a problem with yer Willy?”
Someone at Fox is getting fired tonight.
Are you still on 56K dial-up? Good grief Missouri, join the rest of us in the 21st century.
They probably have Google Fiber in that area.
Oh damn.
WHY CAN’T WE HAVE NICE THINGS?!
Can we get the Asian feed where everyone must do extreme batflips?
Cespedes is a much better runner going in straight lines.
I hope someone in NYC is going to milk Marlin’s man for everything he has.
And the first appearance of #teamdynamite in the series!
#trueathletic
I’m offended that youtube does not have a clip somewhere of my favorite Roger Dorn line to link to right now. (That I also stole for CY25 so long ago).
But lets see if this works:
At least he didnt spike himself.
Christ, what a team of assholes.
(And I don’t hate them because they beat the A’s. I hate them because they failed to beat the Giants.)
This times infinity plus FK YOU GNATS
Every time, I think this is the time those goddamn Royal fuckfaces don’t come from behind. Every time, I prepare to revel in their disappointed faces. I even debased myself and rooted for the fucking Mets. Goddamnit.
Football FSU, Sunday is inching ever closer…
This game is inching ever closer to Sunday.
I told my dad they had Edinson’s dad’s funeral already. I’m a sick bitch.
Oh Familia, you’re breaking my heart.
That would have been rather nerve-racking, if one were to actually give a flying fuck, that is.
fuKC
Would have been a great game, except for who ended up winning.
Their fans are insufferable. They don’t deserve this.
Last year I wanted them to win, because they had such nice, passionate fans. Then I remembered that these nice, passionate fans are also Chiefs fans, so FK them.
After a postseason where I felt like I didn’t know many of the players, there were a lot of familiar ones in this game. I was actually pulling for the Royals in this game, mostly because I figure the Mets have big advantages in the next couple of games.
I still like baseball, and several of the individual players. Good for Chris Young.
I saw the BED signal lit up in a passing cloud amd I came as fast as I could.
Doc Brown AND Monkeyball REFUSE to tell me what year this is, so I gotta assume it’s 2016.
Fucking Giants. Fucking Trump. Fucking Too-Big-To-Fail-II.
Kay posts…Oz posts…all we need now is a sirbed post and the band is back together.
Royals vs Mets…I predict the team that wears blue will win.
I’m pulling for the Royals I guess. I’ve never been more wrong about a team as I thought Dayton Moore was dumber than dirt. I do love the stadium and this will make a lot of my college friends happy.
I’m trying to come up with the most boring World Series matchup possible and my winner is Mariners vs Brewers.
Alex Rodriguez doesn’t know how far away home plate is from the pitcher’s mound.
The Mutts are acting like they want to make sure this thing ends in a sweep.
Gross
Ew why did you make me click that?
On the list of A’s failings we can now add their inability to identify and secure a Fosse-in-waiting.
Bud Black -> Nationals
Mattingly -> Marlins
Andy Green (who?) -> Padres
And Alex Anthopoulos out as Toronto GM, after their first playoff season in 22 years.
Want. Know we won’t get (apparently he wants to be sole GM)
Bud BlackDusty Baker -> NationalsGoodbye, Steven Strasburg, it was nice knowing you.
Soaker, you may have a new player to follow on the links…
Oh, look, the Mets are losing already. Fucking useless NL losers.
So Bob won’t get to sniff a ring?
Euphemistically, perhaps.
The Royals are the last ones who should complain about a pitcher throwing inside to them. What a bunch of dickheads.
Yep. My wife and I were watching the game and she didn’t understand why I’ve been hating the Royals so much. Their response to that first inside pitch reminded me.
So baseball has halftime now, complete with multiple commercial breaks. Way to take a great cause and pound it into the ground.
I could do without baseball in November, but here it comes.
How the season has lengthened over time:
1957 (154 game season, final year without any transcontinental travel, postseason was World Series only):
Opening Day: April 15
End of regular season: September 29
Game 7 of World Series: October 10
Total: 179 days
1968 (162 game season, final year of World Series only):
Opening Day: April 10
End of regular season: September 29
Game 7 of World Series: October 10
Total: 184 days
1993 (final year of LCS/World Series only):
Opening Day: April 5
End of regular season: October 3
Game 7 of World Series: October 24 (Series actually ended with Game 6 the previous day)
Total: 203 days
2015:
Opening Day: April 5
End of regular season: October 4
Game 7 of World Series: November 4
Total: 214 days
It’s a diluted product, and the biggest factor is the bloating of postseason, but we’re stuck with that because of network television money. So the solution would be to cut the regular season to the vicinity of 140-144 games, but that entails each team giving up 9 to 11 home dates plus presumably a corresponding reduction in their local TV contracts.
It’s a hard time convincing any business that they should sell less of their product.
There are certainly examples of deliberate/controlled scarcity – Pliny the Elder springs most immediately to mind!
It’s funny to remember that Coors once played the “hard to get” card. See the plot of “Smokey and the Bandit”.
The other thing I’ll add to my numbers is that the lengthening of the regular season from 1968 to 1993 is largely due to the abolition of scheduled doubleheaders in the late 70s-early 80s period. Since the 80s doubleheaders have usually only been played for the purpose of making up rainouts. The 1968 A’s played 17 doubleheaders; in 1993 they played 4.
The expanded postseason is a great thing, if anything it should be a few days longer in the WC or DS rounds. I’d love to see the regular season rolled back to 154 though.
The annoying thing about the Royals is that they do stupid things and it often doesn’t hurt them. Batting your one decent DH in the fifth, with two outs and a runner on first, is foolish. He even got a hit, but he’s unavailable later.
Our sojourn to the east coast is coming to an end. It’s been really great to be here, mostly to see the grandson but also just to get the flavor and the season. The weather has mostly been great, we’ve had great food and beer, and some beautiful scenery. One thing for sure – nobody here is rooting for the Mets. Too bad we didn’t get to meet up with Colin, but maybe next time. Ready for home.
Yeah, sorry that I couldn’t make it out. The good news is that I can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel, work-wise.
Baseball. Whew.
Oh no Yo.
Most costly errors in World Series history, by Win Probability Added: 1. 1986, B. Buckner, -40% 2. 2015, D. Murphy, -35%
Bummer for him. And people who don’t like anti-gay bigotry can feel really badly for the guy.
That is really funny.
That sentence confused me a lot. I had to look up if Murphy was a bigot or a gay advocate. Turns out he’s a bigot.
Which is too bad, because I’ve thought he’s been an intriguing A’s target for a while.
Me too.
raiders?
RAIDERS
RAIDERSSSSSSZZZZ!!!!!!!
(by which I mean that the 75 minutes it took to get out of the lot while about to burst a kidney was well worth it.)
This is a legit good team. So refreshing!
The last two weeks have been a pleasure to watch. Derek Carr just might be the QB I’ve been waiting my whole life for.
I hate looking at Bob Geren’s face.
I hate
looking atBob Geren’s face(as a manager).Cespedes fouling the ball off himself brought back very bad memories of Jermaine Dye in Game 4 back in 2001. I doubt he can still play tonight.
This is starting to suck again.
It’s almost like starting pitchers don’t magically acquire more stamina through pure force of will in the playoffs.
Yeah, this is why you don’t let the home fan rabble decide about pitching changes.
Or the starter who swears up and down he can finish the game.
Heading into the 10th it is terribly clear that the Royals are about to win the Series. Sagh.
Anyone want to go to Indiana with me this week? Naw?
FK this shit.
I wonder what would have happened if the A’s had just beaten these assholes on that faithful late September night.
May they go another 29 years!
This would be a lot more tolerable if the only team they lost to weren’t those orange clad FKers.
At least the orange-clad FKers are no longer champions of the world!
Woohoo!
Finally something to cheer about after a shitty week.
I have so many memories of going to Royals games over the years where the stadium was dead, the baseball was bad, and it all seemed hopeless. Now, the Kansas City Royals are World Series Champions. Just amazing.
We are now in a tie for First place. Throwing programs better start soon because I want to count down to pitchers and catchers.
Inspired by the post title, how much do you think Cespedes’ performance lost him in future earnings?
him and Daniel Murphy would have been better off if the mets lost to the cubs
Same deal as the one a week or so ago. I wrote the original post, “5Aces” has stolen the authorship and “MikeV” is the last to edit.
