Games 148-150 in Baghdad on the Bayou 120

The A’s Texas-Illinois-Texas road trip concludes with a trio of games at Enron Field. The Astros, having dropped 2.5 games behind the Rangers in the division, are suddenly struggling to hang on to their #2 wild card berth, as they enter the series leading the Twins by 1.5 games and the Angels by 2.5 games. So, these games are pretty meaningless to us, but a lot of people will be watching the results.

Friday at 5:10: Felix Doubront vs. Mike Fiers
Saturday at 4:10: Sonny Gray vs. Scott Kazmir
Sunday at 11:10: Aaron Brooks vs. Collin McHugh

Gray-Kazmir II is once again appealing, but for some of us it’s head to head with Cal @ Texas and Stanford @ USC.

    I know nothing about Texas’ team this year, but have read snippets about turmoil in the Athletic Dept. Any thoughts on the Bears’ chances?

    • doctorK doctorK Sep 18,2015 4:18 pm || Up

      Texas barely beat Iowa State last season – in Austin, and got destroyed by Notre Dame this year. I’d like to think the Bears have a good shot.

      This certainly won’t help Texas’ cause.

    • Soaker Soaker Sep 18,2015 4:29 pm || Up

      The Texas defense is thought to be pretty bad, and as you mention the program is in some disarray after the AD was fired this week, having pissed off just about all the alumni in record time. Cal is favored by about a touchdown; who’da thunk that when these games were scheduled? The concerns: Cal’s first two games didn’t really test them and the toasty climate in Austin is outside their comfort zone.

          That was my kneejerk reaction as well, although I proved to myself way back when they used to pass those cards around at work back in the 80s that I should never bet either way on a Cal game.

          Correct, on Sept. 17. Then in 2017, Ole Miss brings its crew in, and Auburn is down the road.

    Doubront has missed the strike zone badly on all but two of his first 10 pitches. Nice of the Astros to give us an out on a sac bunt anyway. Still, could be a good chance to give Zito some garbage innings to get stretched out more.

    On the missed kick — you have Jarred fucking Goff against the Texas D, and you attempt a 44 yard field goal with the kicker you know is terrible? The fuck?

        Flipped over to Furd / $C. The Farm had the ball on Trojans’ 18 with 8 seconds left in the half exactly as Cal did. They ran a play, and scored touchdown. Now, they did have a timeout, but still, why does Dykes not even try for it there?

          I liked the call as well — put the game in the hands of your best player who put that ball right on money.

          The road schedule is not favorable, with almost certain losses in Utah, Oregon, and UCLA. That places the utmost importance on next weeks match at Washington, which I will be attending in person, all but guaranteeing the loss.

      I turned on the radio in my truck about 5 seconds before the winning TD pass. I know I’m usually down on Greg Papa’s pxp calling, but his call on the TD was tremendous – I think it went something like this:

      TOUCHDOWNNNNNNNNN … RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAIDERS

      I just about burst into tears (of joy, for once).

          My biggest issue with him is that he commonly neglects to give the essentials for calling a game on the radio – ball location, down, distance, and time remaining. His football knowledge is excellent, and I love his TD call.

            I listened from right before the Ravens took the lead until the end. He never gave the score until after the Ravens kicked the go-ahead field goal. He not only never gave the score, he never said it was tied! In fact, he said something like “If the Ravens get another first down, they’ll win the game,” so I assumed they were ahead. Bonkers.

            I still enjoy his passion though.
