    Instead of watching a Nicholas Sparks movie or reading the novel, I just read the Wiki about it. It was probably better than the real thing.

    Another day, another unreleased DVD of another gem of a concert by another top-notch Eighties band. Blog with us now as we do what the record industry suits won’t or can’t, because it might distract from their anti-artistic purge of anything that makes this planet half worth living through. Yesterday we were knee deep in The Pretenders, but today let’s get a bit weirder, by way of one of the old MTV Saturday Night Concerts from when the channel had anything at all to do with actual music. It’s September 8, 1983… it’s Denver, Colorado… and it’s THE FIXX, live and giving The Sign Of Fire at the peak of their heyday in the 1980s.

          • colin Sep 10,2015 7:29 am || Up

            My take on this is that Heineken buying into Lagunitas because it is so successful and they won’t want to meddle, except maybe to improve distribution or that kind of thing. I guess the one worry is if they push to scale up operations and that hurts quality. But Lagunitas already brews a lot of beer, so they must know something about how to do this.

            Also, I am 100% with you on Lagunitas Sucks. If I was put on the spot to name my all-time favorite beer, that’s probably the one that would come to mind.

                  Brazil is very similar. They are all about very light pilsners that have to be drunk at -4 C to be palatable, and the occasional sweet dark beer. Local craft beers are starting to emerge, but they do not like bitter flavors at all.

    i’m aware that there are several islands in hawaii. and that many of you FKers know some of them. but i never paid attention to which island per FKer. till now.

    going for 2 weeks in 2 weeks to the big island, only. staying near pahoa most of the time, already booked. have a few nights to book on the west side.

    Q1: where should we stay on the west side? what general town/area? or, what specific cute little cabana that the 50s left there totally forgotten till somebody decided to put it on air BnB last month?

    Q2: besides the seahorse farm for her, the 50-meter FEMA swimming pool for me, and a day trip up the mountain for the hell of it, what should we do? especially if atypical, low key, and fun as hell.

    Q3: snorkeling, where’s the good one? hiking too?

    Q4: i owe my wife a horseback ride. (yeah, i know. the other type.) any recs?

      I just got back from the big island on Tuesday! We stayed at the Hilton resort in Kona. By far the best day was a day where we got 4 hours unlimited rental of paddleboards, kayaks, water bikes, snorkeling, and glass bottom boats. Unfortunately, it may have been resort specific, although you can look into it.

      We also did a number of hikes and would recommend a couple especially in the National Park (walk across the lava lake and see the lava tube). Side note: do not expect to see actual lava. It changes all the time where its flowing. Even helicopter rides do not guarantee seeing anything. I’d also check out Akaka Falls. I wanted to do the Zipline as it looked great, but never got around to it.

      Otherwise, bring the sunscreen and have fun!

      Things to see:

      Waipio Valley, and its counterpart on the other end of Kohala, Pololu Valley.

      Ka Lae point on the southern tip of the island – this way you can say you’ve been as far south as south goes. The road down there from the highway is somewhat arduous.

      Pu’uhonua O Honaunau – this is a restored heiau (Hawaiian temple) and place of refuge to where someone who had offended the ali’i could flee. Getting there mostly entailed swimming across a bay and then making landfall over the reef and lava flows. Nobody said it would be easy.

      At least one day should be spent at Volcano National Park. Don’t miss the Chain of Craters.

      I would avoid Mauna Kea due to the ongoing protests against pending telescope construction at the summit.

      Also, since you’re going to be there for two weeks, you might consider a day trip to Maui or Kauai. FK Oahu unless you know someone there or like urban blight.

    As a human, are we required to love our brother or sister? ‘Cause I don’t even like mine.

    • Soaker Sep 15,2015 6:40 pm || Up

      My brother and I are civil when we need to be (he is currently acting as the executor of my mother’s rather minimal estate and we’ve had a few e-mail communications about that), but generally he and I go our separate ways. I have never met his wife or daughter.

    No love for rugby around here? You guys are a strictly cricket crowd?

      I’ve never watched any cricket, do enjoy rugby.

          I haven’t been but should be (played in college, love the sport).

          Quick look at the pools shows that Argentina and England are doing worse than I’d expect based on decade-old rankings. Uruguay used to be good too.

          Otherwise, I would have had no trouble picking Australia / Scotland / RSA / All Blacks / Ireland / France

            Japan over RSA was a big surprise so far. Wales over England was perhaps not really strange, Wales has been pretty strong lately.
            Argentina is doing fine. Won one very decisively, and lost a rather close one to the Kiwis.

            I love seeing countries like Tonga, with 100,000 inhabitants and 20,000 registered rugby players.

              Wales over England was only a surprise in that the Welsh had lost their entire back line to injury. England choked though (and then played for the win at the death rather than the draw, and – unlike Japan – failed).

            Pretty much same here. I know someone who went over to see some games, but haven’t really been paying much attention. Might have to see if I can get out to the Up and Under to watch some.

      All I know about the sport is that the teammates of the rugby player who lived in my dorm at Cal were impossibly big drinkers.
