We’ve been woefully lacking in KOTDs of late.
Sometimes I think it would be nice to be this type of fan.
I drove through the central valley last weekend. Not saying this is going to happen here, but damn are they pissed off through there.
It’s nice to have Taibbi back at Rolling Stone.
Grill away FKers.
Re DFWAS: LOL Hawkeyes. Nice to see that Governor Braindead is the same today as back in the 80’s.
After today, fuck Iowa. I hope their new president drives that shithole university into the ground.
Re the tags: There aren’t very many good reasons to go to Cleveland but I remember this being one of the best. I think it’s closest to “spicy brown”.
Here’s one.
I get the political angle of the strip but I feel compelled to note that from a practical slant the last panel is a legit tactic used by fire fighters. The last panel features a fully involved structure fire, most likely far too damaged to risk an interior attack and moments away from collapsing into a giant bonfire. So you spray water on the non-burning building to protect it from catching due to fire brands or radiant/convective heat.
If the writer drew this panel knowing the technical side of fire fighting than he’s slyly promoting an argument 180 degrees from the overt message.
Had that reaction too (though that, of course, just means its a bad analogy for people who know firefighting. Also, too, wouldn’t you want to cave in the roof on the burning house, or am I making that up?)
The writer (as far as I can tell from his site/comments) is not at all seeing your point or being sly.
I didn’t want to risk not giving enough credit to the artist.
In this scenario the roof collapsing is inevitable and the structure safer to attack more aggressively once it happens. You don’t ever want to get caught in between. If you can knock out a structure fire before the roof gets involved or too weakened than that’s what you want to do. When you say “cave in the roof” you don’t typically see or want a situation where the fire crew is actively trying to make the structure collapse. When you see a home fire that has a crew working on the roof they’re doing so to create ventilation or to make better access to attack any fire in the attic; they are doing so in a structure that they believe is still sound enough to be saved. (Or they’re trying to keep the fire in check long enough to perform a rescue but that’s a different tangent.)
What the comic strip is showing is a fully involved house, i.e. a lost cause and you don’t waste limited resources (in the case of the strip, one hose manned by a person who doesn’t have the equipment to get up close to fight the fire) on a lost cause. If you know what you’re doing to back off, let the structure burn down and try to prevent the damage from spreading.
Like you said, its a bad analogy for anyone who understand fire fighting. But its telling that you, a non-fire fighter (and there’s nothing wrong with that) had a similar reaction. I’d argue… if I felt like arguing… that the strip makes a much more reasoned, logical argument AGAINST the movement the artist is trying to support. He’s saying don’t waste your time or risk your life on a hopeless cause; protect what you can and when the fire burns down you can clean up and rebuild.
I’m assuming that if they wanted that to be accurate (for their intended message), they’d have a gray house on fire in between a black house and a white house and have the firefighters only be spraying the white house while the wind was blowing embers towards the black house.
That would work. Might be a bit much for a 3rd panel punchline but that’s why creative people get the big bucks!
I guess alternatively the house on fire could just be a much much smaller and easier to fire where the firefighters are erroneously giving up on the house to protect the other house.
NERD!
Sigh. Isn’t it hawt?
I’d prefer the message to be “Black Lives Matter Too.” It’s an issue of semantics, but if the intended message is that “while all lives matter, black live are disproportionately neglected” then saying that they matter as well is far more meaningful that saying they matter and getting offended when someone suggests they’re not the only lives out there that matter. It’s too divisive and easily so. Using a slogan where you can say “All lives matter, Black lives matter too” doesn’t allow for the division anywhere near so easily. They’ll still try to divide because that’s what the bigoted nature of the beast has been doing for so long, but it’s a lot easier to get people on your side with a more inclusive message that still points out the subset of the population being poorly treated.
XKCD has what appears to be a random survey online. It could be interesting to see the results. Or not.
finally, a place where “aslfjortweiua,fsmn;lfdkjfkls;jjklfdasiuojkl;reqwm,.fdsajklvcoiukl;dfsam,./dfasjklfadsioucvzxm,.dfjklfdsaoipuerwm,adfsmn,.cvjklfadsuioprewjkldfasm,adfskcvxzuidfsiojkl;fadsmn,.eqrwnm,dfsaioucvxzuiojkl;fdsam,.erwqjkladfsouidfsam,.dfsadafsjkladfsiuopfadsljk;m,.sadfjkl;dfasuiopdfsaouipjkl;dfsam,.,.mcvxzjkl;cvxzouipdfsljksadf” is a correct answer.
(and doesn’t FK up the screen width.)
Exactly!
I’ll admit to being interested in what he does with it.
Taibbi back at Rolling Stone you say?
I just couldn’t go there. But well played.
Where’s all the discussion of the Faroe Islands/Northern Ireland Euro 2016 qualifier nailbiter?
Looks like Gibraltar is ready to inherit San Marino’s mantle of Europe’s most hapless: P7 W0 T0 L7 F1 A38
I’m still recovering from Italy beating Malta 1-0 in Florence on a possible handball yesterday.
i can only offer tactical advice. if you bite your nails it helps grip the ball when you’re holding it at the penalty spot for the kicker.
Apropos of the soccer talk above, I see that Wales is ahead of England in the latest FIFA rankings.
since you’re showing signs of interest:
tevez and gago, lodeiro, and fuenzalida, all on leave from boca to play meaningless friendlies for argentina, uruguay, and chile. while ortigoza is going to play the paraguayan meaningless friendly on saturday and rush back to buenos aires for a game the next day. in other words, the AFA said to boca and san lorenzo: “FIFA-date-what now? play on! it’s not like you guys are neck and neck at the top of the local championship.” (they’re neck and neck at the top of the local championship.) ((trump woulda built a wall to keep his players in country.)) (((except he’s never heard of them. NO INTEREST!)))
Based on tonight’s results, Argentina might drop a 10 spot on Mexico next week.
missed it. i feel weird about it too.
forgot to mention boca and san lorenzo are playing each other today. that’s the thing and why the stars should be there. apart for a couple more on-paper test for them against probable also rans trying to upset during the remaining 7 dates of the season, today’s game is a veritable final.
so that was annoying. 91st minute of a stalematelike 0–0, when betancour, the kid who’s in the game to replace lodeiro while he’s with uruguay, totally errs a defending pass and turns it into an assist. san lorenzo 50, boca 49.

Fodder for whomever prepares the game thread tonight: it’s the anniversary of
It’s probably a good thing that they blew the 11-run lead before the era of game threads.
You can just imagine Trainman in that one.
Oh, wow.
I honestly dont think I would have made it to the walkoff. Though after the games right before it maybe I think anything is possible…
It would be cool to find a way to really do retro GTs.
I mean, getting an 11-0 lead is one thing. Losing the whole thing is quite another, and that doesn’t even factor in the walkoff homer. That whole game was just ridiculous to be at in person.
I stayed up until 2 in the morning watching that thing on the east coast. I thought about crashing, but it was the only national TV game during the streak, if not the only one during the entire regular season, so I decided to savor the pain.
I remember I made it to the end of the game, watching in my little apartment in Lafayette at the time. I know I’d had a few adult beverages as the lead eroded, but I guess the drama of the ongoing streak kept me going to the end of that one.
sigh
This season there was that time they were winning for 20 minutes in a row.
I’ve just made my annual complaint call to DirecTV about the NFL package. I got $5 off for 6 months, a free upgrade to the Max version, and free showtime. Sigh, I’ve done better.
On the bright side, apparently they’re getting ready to give a pile of money to the Pac 12 for the rights to Pac 12 Network.
Yesssssss!!!!!!!!!
All the reports say the deal will get done, but maybe not this weekend. Fine, I don’t need to watch Cal vs. Grambling (spread is Cal -44.5) or any of the other awful P12 vs. lower division games they have this weekend. I’ll be interested to see whether the state of Nevada is considered to be “inside the Pac 12 footprint” and whether that makes a difference in availability. We have a lot of alumni from the schools, we host the men’s basketball tournament, we’re surrounded by P12 states except Idaho but we don’t have a P12 school.
Five days alone at home. Lounge attire!
All right homeowners, I have a question for you. My furnace was built in 1976, it’s just a matter of whether it will conk out on Christmas or New Year’s Eve when the air temp is 3 degrees, so I’m going to replace it this fall. The question is whether the new furnace should be the 80% efficiency model or the 95% efficiency one. The quoted price difference for the installation is $950 ($3650 vs. $4600), not just the actual cost of the furnace but there’s additional work involved for the high-efficiency one due to the condensation issues. I can calculate how long it will take to recover the extra cost via gas bill savings and don’t need any lecture about the environment; what I’m looking for is if anyone has experience with high-efficiency furnaces and whether maintenance complications would make the simpler 80% furnace the better choice.
Hmmm, my research is telling me that when you buy one of those high-efficiency condensing furnaces you buy a more complicated piece of equipment with more frequent and more expensive repairs. The gas bill savings would justify it if I were heating a large house, but at 1150 sq. ft. of living space and using the gas fireplace as the primary heat source for much of the day anyway, I think the simpler technology wins. The little treehugger on my left shoulder is mildly PO’d but he’ll get over it.
That makes sense. Especially since a Tahoe resident can’t afford to skimp on furnace maintenance.
My parents have had a 95+% one for a few months now and LOVE it primarily because they don’t hear it clicking on and off anywhere near as much as their old one (probably the same vintage as yours). We made a similar choice (though, in part, to help with permit approval) but haven’t had the thing on yet.
Still, they found it to be a massive quality of life upgrade for whatever that’s worth. Haven’t had it long enough to know about maintenance issues, and you’re facing a different climate.
Fognini beats Nadal, who falls to 151-1 when taking the first two sets in a major. Wouldn’t believe it if I didn’t just see it.
He played out of his mind. I have to admit, when I first started watching I was wondering when Jafar joined the tennis circuit.
A perspective I generally agree with:
http://sportsroadtrips.com/2015/09/the-protective-netting-debate.html
I enjoy sitting close at times, and even when I take photos of non-batters I pay attention to the hitter by the time the pitch is there.
I don’t have evidence but I strongly suspect this is the biggest factor in the increased number of incidents (if there is in fact an increase; as he goes on to say, maybe they’re just being reported more).
I think low screens, not full backstop height, could be extended to the ends of the dugouts in most ballparks. After all, the players in the dugout have those they can duck behind. The players in Oakland don’t have that due to the distance from home plate, and if you’re more than 80 or 90 feet from the plate you shouldn’t need protection; just watch the damn game.
The low net to the ends of the dugouts is where they should begin, if MLB is set on extending them. I’ve been to two MILB ballparks that have nets to the ends of the dugouts (Lancaster and Rancho Cucamonga) and both are low, not nearly as high as the backstop nets. However, the one in Rancho extends further down the foul lines as well.
Something like the nets in Japan, especially if you watched any Tokyo Dome games at any point, is completely unnecessary here and would just be excessive.
I wish more people would pay better attention if they’re going to sit close, but there are cases where you just don’t have any realistic time to react.
Sure, you could still toss a baseball over this net to a fan, but it’s not as simple as going up to someone and handing it over. That IS part of what makes the general fan experience good.
Set it up like the NFL with goal posts. After the inning have the nets lower.
i really didn’t take him seriously when he said “mostly women and children.”
there is a point of diminishing returns. I think netting a few feet over the dugout would be sufficient.
Keep your phone down and eyes up when riding Muni
Watch out batgirl, Wildcats on the prowl!
No kidding. This is proving to be a tough slog.
After the aberration of recent years, possibly sliding back to the mediocrity that has generally marked both Cal and Stanford football for my entire life. “4-7 Stanford meets 3-8 Cal here at Memorial Stadium this afternoon, but you can throw the records out because this is the Big Game!”
Two field goals against a bottom-tier Big10 team won’t cut it.
If Northwestern was more competent on offense, this would’ve been an absolute slaughter.
It’s definitely a tough hit to the prestige of the Pac 12.
David Shaw’s job is safe though. After today, Mike Leach’s seat goes from hot to searing.
I’ve only watched a handful of Stanford games under Shaw but boy…they run a very conservative offense.
It works a lot, but when it bites you in the ass, it REALLY bites you in the ass.
Welcome to the long weekend and a very special birthday tribute post to one of yours truly’s all-time favorite musicians in any genre. Blog with us on the hurry-up side as we step back in time to 1971 and one of the most incendiary live records in the Rock pantheon, unreissued since its first vinyl advent 43 years ago and remastered from a near-pristine LP transfer by me. Are you ready to go through some Changes? Well hop on and hold on tight as we celebrate one of the heaviest hitters ever to occupy a drum throne: born this day in 1947 and in danger of being forgotten approximately never, we bring you the one and the only BUDDY MILES :D
Finally got to see Mad Max: Fury Road. Was I on drugs?
I just saw it a few days ago and I loved it. I think Tom Hardy says maybe 20 words the whole movie but it works.
He’s so good.
He was very strong in the role and it’s not easy replacing someone who had done something iconic with the role in earlier movies. This Mad Max seemed leaner and meaner, and a little bit more crazy, but I really liked what he did with the role…and the stunts were amazing.
I hadn’t seen the other movies. I was in for a little shock when Fury Road started.
Of the first three The Road Warrior is absolutely worth seeing. The first Mad Max movie is odd and the third one…well, Tina Turner is in it. The Road Warrior though is very similar to Fury Road…except Fury Road has a lot more kick ass women in it.
I wish I would have know they had a need for fat girls with boobs.
You could go from nursing to uh…a different kind of nursing.
On behalf of all those who have had to put up with Husker fans over the years, I’d like to kindly invite all the good people of Lincoln, NE to take it all, suffer.
I really didn’t get the Mike Riley hire at Nebraska…he is the very definition of mediocre football coach. That being said I still have enough old Big 8/Big 12 hate for Nebraska to enjoy seeing them fail even though they have left for Bigger Ten pastures.
If you can lose to a Division 2 school (or whatever they call them now) at home called the Jackrabbits you have to do it. Rock, Chalk…eh…when does hoops start? I’m not even going to bother to learn our newest soon to be ex-head coach’s name.
Your Jackrabbit’s fact of the day…I think they only have 15 players on the entire team and they’re all white, 5 foot 8, and named Tanner.
I’ll admit I don’t follow college football too closely but I really had no idea a team called South Dakota State even existed until today. I think we lost to North Dakota last year so we’re 0 for the Dakotas.
I want to say he’s getting like 15 or more million from both ND and us. Terrible coach but a hell of a magician.
And the Kansas State band piled on in a formation worthy of Stanford.
I already gave my K-State parents shit about that. My mom is always going on about how “well at least we have a classy band…”
My fantasy draft is tomorrow…I just thought you should all know. My entire team will only be Raiders running backs so it should be a hell of a season.
You can cross Richardson off your list.
Thanks, and go As.
But…he was my guy. I gave him a $600 K signing bonus…oh wait that was Reggie.
Okay, let me do something Grill like…
Here’s a link to that story in The New Yorker about that thing smart people care about. (Bed pretends he knows how to set up a link.)
And…scene.
Has nevermoor signed the DNR for the site yet?
That seems insensitive to the family.
Free Kraut died like it lived…not recognized by Google search.
OMG. Bartolo Colon.
My grandmother died again this week. Her dying words were very touching and so true. “You’re either SWAT or your not.” Live on you sweet lady.
Underrated hottie…Bill Fagerbakke.
Another underrated hottie…Doug Johns.
Oh by the way you folks can follow me on twitter now at…@KimKardashian
Since this is a Grill I feel like we need more comments on bicycle helmet safety and the California penal code.
Spicy Brown mustard for me…it’s the only good thing Germany ever gave us…and to be honest I’m not even sure it’s German but that’s what my family calls spicy brown mustard…to be fair we are Episcopalians so we tend to buck the system when it comes to what we call mustards.
Bed, if I don’t get the chance to tell you later when Reggie McKenzie is carrying Mark Davis on his shoulders holding the Lombardi trophy, I told you so.
I assume you’re talking about when Reggie is moving one of the three we’ve already won into a box to me wrapped up for the move back to LA.
I mean….Chip Kelly does realize he’s going to Hell now, right?
True love or a really great foot long chicken burrito?
I’m self aware enough to realize my last days on this Earth will be spent at an old folks home talking to a wall in an empty room.
i bet by then we can program a bot to make coments for you
I’m hoping by then Siri will finally just let me finish when I talk to her…I’m sure my wife will have long since stop listening to me at this point and my children will pretend I’m already dead…ah yes…the future’s so bright I have to wear trifocals.
I’m sorry I made this Grill kind of Loungey…I’m a bad fella.
I upgraded to a new iPhone because I have two whole apps now…it’s pretty cool. I know how to turn it on and everything. Still waiting to figure out how to turn women on though.
you have crime time? that’s my most used app
I have Duolingo and the NYTNow app…I’m learning Spanish while also working full time, getting my PhD, raising two children, keeping up with a younger wife, and building my life sized Gene Nelson statue out of human hair.
…and the answers to tonight’s quiz are.
Spicy mustard, Charlie Weis, white guys named Tanner, footlong chicken burritos, and breastfeeding in the wasteland.
Courage.
My hops just arrived with a bonus gift of a bag of “draft beer”-flavored jelly beans.
boy, Harballtalk just screwed the pooch on a re design.
nothing will change!!!
In Euro 2016 qualifier news:
Turkey blew the Dutch doors off 3-0, dropping the Oranje to fourth in their group and now underdogs to even make the third-place playoffs. Shocking stuff.
not certain enough to make me happy.
turkey has its last two games against the top two spots, while the neds have a gimme against the borats. AV’s questionable head math: turkey has to tie one against teams its lost to, to even up with holland beating kztn.
Both Iceland (!) and the Czechs are qualified after today. The Dutch are basically in the position Mexico was in two years ago, but relying on Iceland instead of the USA.
Today I got to mark something off my bucket list: I drove a motorized wheelchair.
Are you ready for some football?
The Pats are my most-hated team in the NFL (which is saying a lot, since I hate all of them except one). I love all the negative stories coming out now about these guys – here’s one on SI.com.
Eno Sarris has become indispensable for understanding what is going on with A’s players. Here he is on Doolittle.
Okay, I got it.
I guess you all hate this. :-)
(NOTICE ME!!)
Back when I was living in Chicago, I really liked this cap:
Ahhh, that old logo. Never understood why it looks like the batter is just taking the pitch, though. Then again, the MLB logo has someone taking a pitch up at the shoulders.
See, the A’s stressing a patient approach that leads to walks fits the logo!
oh i like it. i like panel hats
It’s kind of bold in a garish but very colorful way.
Me too!
What’s interesting is they mention people will receive their hat within 45 days of placing the order. Mine was made in about 10 days (Aug. 31 after ordering Aug. 21) and with the long weekend I got it yesterday.
Now, maybe they just don’t have much of a backlog for custom hats right now, but someone I know who’s really into New Era and collecting hats thought it could also be because they might like the design enough to offer it for sale in the general sense. Who knows, but that’s something they cover in their fine print – that they reserve the right to do something like that.
I know there’s no compensation in it for me, and of course I don’t have a claim to any logos in the first place, but it’d be kind of cool if they thought a design I had made was worthy of further production on their end. Guess time will tell.
My experience is that lots of online shops will list super long lead times just to cover their asses in the case of an unexpected delay. But then 95% of the time you get your order way quicker than they led you to expect.
Aaarrgh!! When I sold Cat’s PJs, I switched over my emails from my work email to a gmail address I had grabbed but never used when gmail first got going. Now that I am using it regularly I find that some whack job in Florida named Jennie Beevers is for some reason using that email as, I don’t know, her “fake” account to sign up for mailing lists. That part I get, but I also get confirmation emails from orders she’s placed, her doctors office, etc. which makes less sense, as those are emails she actually would want to receive.
For one thing it’s clogging my in box, but more galling, I’m now unsubscribing daily from the likes of Ben Carson, Reince Priebus, and the NRA. I got her mailing address off of her recent order for “skin youth skin” and mailed her a polite but firm plea to knock it the hell off. We’ll see how that goes.
Rather than “unsubscribing”, which lets spammers know there’s a valid e-mail address to sell, you should probably set up filters as these come in; i.e. any e-mail coming from Ben@Carson2016.com gets sent directly to Trash. If she misses an important e-mail, tough shit.
I have myname@gmail.com and someone else with the identical name apparently uses my_name@gmail.com but sometimes forgets to put in the underline. I filter those to Trash.
You can also use google’s special tools:
first.last@gmail.com is the same address as firstlast@gmail.com, so if you put a dot in somewhere you can filter all the emails without it to spam/trash.
Also: address+comment@gmail.com is the same as address@gmail.com. The normal use is address+spam@gmail.com when signing up, then filtering that but there’s no reason you couldn’t instead register for real things with address+legit@gmail.com and filter out the rest.
No, no, no. You don’t send it to trash, you forward it to that asshole Jennie Beevers who’s using your email address.
This sounds like a good sign for the Carson campaign.
There’s part of the basis for the schedule complaint: The A’s have to travel to Texas on five consecutive road trips from early July through mid-September.
The Milwaukee-Cincinnati trip isn’t quite as early as I thought but that does jump out as an interesting one. The Cincinnati games could be followed by a game or two in Nashville, with the Sounds opening a homestand the day after the A’s conclude play in Cincinnati.
Oh yeah, that’s what I need to double-check on: Nashville. They’re also home until June 3 if looking at the start of the month.
I’ve already begun putting together a tentative trip idea that could include the Houston part of that Milwaukee/Cincinnati bit, looking at other places to possibly fill in single games along the way similar to the trip I took in September 2010 that got me to six different places in ten days. If I took this to about a two week extreme, I could potentially visit eight more ballparks for the first time.
No idea if I’ll do it or not – there’d be a lot of planning to do and checking on flights/motels/etc. as time goes by, but it’s never too early to think about it.
I make a few notes now but it’s more fun to think about this stuff in January.
The obvious stop between Milwaukee and Cincinnati, if driving that, is Nationals @ White Sox on June 9. It’s easy to wake up in Milwaukee and be on the South Side for a day game, if that’s the schedule.
I’ll list what I’ve started thinking from:
June 1: CLEvTEX / CHCvLAD / TORvNYY
June 2: CLEvKCR / CHCvLAD (but that’s a day game)
June 3: HOUvOAK
June 4: HOUvOAK
June 5: HOUvOAK
June 6: BALvKCR
June 7: MILvOAK
June 8: MILvOAK
June 9: CHWvWAS / TORvBAL
June 10: CINvOAK
June 11: CINvOAK
June 12: CINvOAK
June 13: CHWvDET / TORvPHI
June 14: WASvCHC
Not including Nashville before or after any of that. The only thing I’m thinking about with a car rental going to different cities is usually you’re hit with a fee for returning a vehicle to a location that isn’t where you picked it up from. But, driving a couple hours from MIL to CHI and about 5 from CHI to CIN isn’t bad depending on the costs relative to flying. CIN to NSH would be about 4 hours, but if I included DC it wouldn’t be worth driving to NSH.

future.
I want to be shocked by Mike Huckabee’s ignorance regarding the vitality of the Supreme Court case people of his ilk love to name drop, but denial of the existence of the Reconstruction Amendments seems pretty standard among conservatives, even those who went to law school and wear black robes at work.
Sickels remains somewhat optimistic about Semien but does not think he is a shortstop.
i don’t buy it. I don’t get why he would play better at 2nd.
his range is fine at short, but his errors cost him. his errors are both of throwing and fielding variety. he either can or can’t pick up the ball and throw the ball.
it seems his errors are slowing. I don’t know. i think he’ll either be fine at short, or useless
I suppose when playing at second base you have more chance of getting a guy even after the ball bounces off your glove.
Not sure I like this, but as long as he keeps his nose (or liver) clean, maybe it will work out.
If he’s not suspended for the year I’ll be amazed
Thanks, and go As.
America.
OK, forgive me in advance, but here comes an unusual post about a most uncomfortable and unhappy anniversary of which you are all well aware. Blog the unfriendly skies with us now for a two-hour long Audio Film concerning the events of 14 years ago today, assembled improvisatorily and mixed from all-original footage of 9/11/2001 live on the air by yours truly on Berkeley Liberation Radio, one of the oldest continuously operational pirate stations in the world, on March 21, 2005. It’s pretty damn harrowing, so I warn you in advance, but what about that day and all that has followed hasn’t been?
simpson content
It’s a rough day for me but I won’t and can’t let it pass without a tribute to one of — the not the — greatest musicians of any stripe currently breathing on this Earth. Blog beneath, between and behind with us now for a remaster of an absolutely exquisite concert, never officially issued, of one of the world’s most adored bands of the last four decades. You can blame Canada all you want, but it’ll do nothing to diminish the impact of RUSH, recorded live on their 1980 PERMANENT WAVES tour and featuring today’s 63rd birthday boy, the astonishingly talented Neil Peart :D
Looks like I picked the wrong week to make the Colts my 2nd favorite team.
Andrew Luck is no Tyrod Taylor.
Yeah, but how about them undefeated, division-leading Bills?
Last week was the wrong week for that.
This week appears to be the wrong week as well.
Thank goodness my 1st favorite team is winning! And it looks like the Pac 12 / DirecTV talks have imploded.
I’m glad to see that the proliferation of sports networks is ending in saturation and, I hope, some financial failures. The Pac-12 needs DirecTV a lot more than DirecTV needs the conference but the conference still thinks it owns a must-have product. Well, it doesn’t.
As a public service, I deleted the latest spambot post by whoever the piece of shite that has hijacked 5Aces’ login.
I suspect it’s showing up as 5Aces only because his user name is first. I should really update to the WP4.x suite, but I’m worried I’ll break everything.
Ok. That makes me feel a bit better. Though I really do want All Of Your Opinion On A College That Is Best Writing…
Add a user that would come before him to test? 4Aces?
Try 2Girls1Cup.
I was going to do this but I can’t get the CAPTCHA to generate a code in any browser.
Edit: I generated the CAPTCHA using the audio. I am now going to allow 3spammers’ comment and we’ll see if he/she/it posts again.
Just deleted another one (supposedly) from 5Aces.
I got this last one.
I can see IP addresses for comments but not top-level posts. Either I’m not looking in the right place or that privilege is reserved to nm. If these posts are coming from the same IP or a narrow range of IPs, nm should be able to block access at the hosting account level.
Fahrvergnügen.
Ok, also going to change my password again. I doubt it will do anything but it cant hurt.
Sorry guys, I just really want to know what you think about this college that will has the best of all school for money.
I don’t think your account has been hacked at all, believe instead that a bot is taking advantage of a security flaw in older versions of WordPress and your existing user name is the lucky one that got picked for spoofing.
You can see why nm doesn’t update the software all the time: WordPress was on V2 when this site started, went to V3 shortly thereafter and then V4 in 2014. And in the meantime they put out all these security and maintenance updates, 6 to V4 just this year. As he says above, due to all the tweaks he made in response to our bitching and moaning about the kludgyness of the site way back when, it would be pretty easy to break the whole thing by making any of these updates but especially by upgrading from V3 to V4. That’s why I think, if it can be determined that this is one Pakistani bot making the posts, the imperfect but “adequate for now” solution is to block that bot.
As I’ve mentioned before I tried running a phpBB forum briefly, but these issues kept me up at night and I punted ownership of that thing to somebody more knowledgeable inside of a year.
Another possibility might be that they had his earlier password and have been able to remain logged in.
Either way, I need to find a couple hours to test the V4 update at some point. Just hasn’t happened yet.
I dunno about that. I still have to log in again at some point every week.
I do not need to. Maybe once every month or 2. So maybe they are at the same thing. But I like Soaker’s theory better. Especially since my password right now is not some easy to guess thing.

Note the various characters meant to make the password harder to figure out. The L in his last name is actually an I.
It’s been more than a year since I last wrote something on my blog. I find the cause better than the execution – if you want to check it out, it’s here
I think it’s wonderful what you’ve written. One needs only look at the fires here and all the people losing their homes to see how close we all could be to an entire life getting ripped apart.
And even then – however terrible that is – we’re still in our home country, with a (comparatively) functioning government and institutional resources to rebuild.
By my reckoning countries should be taking in refugees in proportion to their weapons sales to the countries people are being driven out of.

What a great idea
Totally. I’m not equating the two situations by any means.
Understood.
Speaking of which, I just heard from a friend that his in-laws just got a picture of their house, which is fine, while across the street is devastated. That must be so hard emotionally, the relief mixed with sadness and guilt for neighbors/friends who lost everything.
If you happen to be near the SF main library between now and October 11, I highly recommend this exhibit. It is really wonderful. Alan Blackman could have made a killing designing album covers or doing custom wedding invitations. It also made me want to find a calligraphy class. My handwriting is getting so bad, it is embarrassing.
Thanks, appreciated
Words from a friend of a friend: “If images of a child’s dead body washed up on the beach are what’s required to stir human compassion, perhaps there’s a greater tragedy unfolding in this world.”
Well said, by the way!
For its part, your native land seems to be acquitting itself quite well with the reroutes from Hungary over the past 36 hours.
Thanks. And I have no high hopes of my native land being an exemplary country in this case. You would think that with the memories still rather fresh, it would jump on the opportunity to be the helping hand. But, last few years have seen it take huge steps backwards in most every human and intelligence aspect.
Nicely done, sir.
Appreciated
That was perfect elcroata, thank you.
Glad you liked it!

Pretty cool symbolism, NASA T-shirt and handcuffs…
This makes me so angry.
He got an invitation to take his clock to the White House – which doesn’t make up for it, but is a great Presidential response.
and of course, you will notice the minicuffs. you know, for kids.
this is what’s wrong with modern policing. they are trined to find a crime when one is reported. If someone says they are a victim, they are a victim.
1) when questioned by police the only response you should give is “I will not talk until I have an attorney present.”
so, he doesn’t need to give an explaination, if he doesn’t, he is not covering up a crime he is using his (non seconmd amendment) rights.
2) I find it hard to believe he didn’t explain his story about making it sunday to show his teacher, yet that didn’t enter into their “analysis”
3) they are using lanuage that precludes innocent explainations. Cops do this all the time, a stick is a “weapon” in the report. a statement is “he admitted.” and anything that would be a defense, or mitigate the action is omitted.
4)how was he cuffed for “his” safety?
1 item I hadnt thought of: I’m putting a lot of blame on the first teacher. The stories say he saw it, liked it, but then tells the kid “hey, dont show anyone else, they may think it’s a bomb”.
This is a high school kid-of COURSE he is going to show everybody. That teacher needs to either send a note to everyone saying hey this kid has a clock, dont freak out. Or, be an actual responsible adult and say “I’m worried dumb people will react, so I’m going to hold this for you until school gets out”.
Yeah, this. WTF was that teacher (not) thinking?
Those are only ever invoked by communists and the guilty.
I hadn’t seen these points before. If they’re true, it does make you wonder what they were trying to accomplish.
I saw that last night. I find it hard to put myself in their position, but maybe they thought since they “caught it soon enough” they didnt have to do those things.
But yeah, hard to reconcile with that.
My guess is they quickly realized it wasn’t a bomb, but then they decided they had to punish him for making them briefly think it could have been a bomb. In their zero-tolerance mind he had committed a “hoax,” even though he consistently told them it was just a clock. They are also dumb and racist.

Heh. If you thought Rick Perry was the dumbest person in America, consider that someone actually gave his campaign 5 million dollars.

Great line about the potential Zito-Hudson match-up at the Coliseum:
It’s a Montreal Monday and the birthday of the man some consider to be the greatest songwriter ever born, so here comes a treat that beats even a prodigious plate of poutine. Blog with us now to a place by the river, for the platter ranking ninth on the 100 Greatest Bootlegs Of All Time list, remastered to a state of audiological glory by notable sound boffin JWB. This one will make a fine companion to your evening’s reverie… in fact, tonight will be fine. Leonard Cohen is 81. :)
heard a neat suzanne cover on KALX this morning.
what’s so neat about hippy music in french??
right?
the dj this morning played the english version.
Hey GM, we have the Star hawks blue coming up this weekend. I assume that is one of your boys teams.
What age?
u8. you have a girl on u8, yeah?
I do! But boys and girls are on separate teams for us now.
yeah.ours too.
And our coach has a girl, so SLF and I had to organize. i am a licensed coach now. But really I am in charge of scheduling. the dad who is coaching is pretty good and knows his stuff. albeit a little too aggressive. “GO GET THE BALL TITO! JOSE WATCH YOUR SIDES!”
last week we played the sf glenns (club team, the practice 2 times a week with paid coaches). we lost 5-3. one goal was scored when we were short handed. one of our kids just walked off the field and I didn’t notice until we were lining up for kick off
another goal was scored after the ref called a back pass (it was legit, but cme on, they’re 7).after the resulting free kick saw every one of our defenders try to block the ball with their hands. Turns out, its hard to get the ball past 14 7 year old arms. the resulting penalty kick by a 5 foot tall 7 year old went in.
I wanted towin this game so badly.
milo scored. 2nd goal in 2 weeks.
The Glenns killed our girls 6-0 in the first week! I figured they were a club team.
A back pass should be an indirect free kick. Tell your kids that if the other team tries to kick one of those right at goal without a touch first they should just let it go in the net. And hope the ref knows the rules.
Some of these coaches (or maybe they’re just parents) are crazy. One mom was yelling to her defenders “ATTACK HER!!” when a little girl was dribbling toward goal.
oh, its the glenns. they had one kid touch the ball first and run away.
silly club teams
oh wait
Thanks, and go As.
club teams are fine. Honest.
club teams in rec leagues, well, ok, I get it, you need a jv. fine. expect a little blow back but fine, its about the kids.
club team parents in rec league? Club team coaches in a rec league?
Sigh.
Club teams should not be in rec leagues.
We have what’s called “select” which is sort of a tweener league. Parent coaches, club trainers once a week, some travel but nothing bad, and a tournament or two. Slightly higher cost, slightly more serious, but still not full premier club.
Thanks, and go As.
this club has about 4 teams in prep (the top step in our league) and 4 teams in rec per age group. i think the rec teams are the “weaker” players, but they dominate the rec leagues. my older kid’s team played to a draw and lost big last season.
I think my younger kids are pretty good, and with a paid coach and 2 per week practice, they would be fine in a prep league.
Sure, they can pull stuff like this, but just ship them one $0.25 MOSFET with a defect, and they act like the world is coming to the end.
I’m still stunned they got away with this for so long. Serious shit is going to hit the fan. Especially if they aren’t the only company playing this game.
Seriously. I’m rarely shocked by stories of corporate malfeasance, but this. This is something else.
There’s no way that happens without approval at very high levels. I really hope they can make criminal charges stick against some of the execs.
I agree. It’s going to be a feeding frenzy, and I’m not sure it’ll be one that VW comes out of in anything like it’s current market position.
If it has to recall all those cars, and pay fines on the scale people are kicking around, we may have a bankruptcy.
And not only that, as I understand it in order to bring those cars into compliance with the emissions regs they will have to make fixes that reduce their performance and gas mileage. That’s devastating from a marketing point of view.
Compared to this incident, GM’s ignition switch fiasco is like a minor scratch on the rear bumper.
As an engineer, I say – pretty well done.
All I can say about Frank Chimero is Christ, what an asshole!
Saw this today and cracked up. (and yes, I fat finger all the time on teh Twitter.)
I actually think “Hi. I’d like you all to join my professional network on LinkedIn.” works just about as well.
“Oops. Oh fuck it.”

I actually think it is a fitting tribute to an event that is pretty much the baby of 2 of Al’s biggest enemies: Rozelle and Hunt.
I have wondered what a league where Davis fights and somehow stays commissioner would look like.
Even though I am volunteering for the Super Bowl Host Committee (greeting people at SFO and telling them they should really check out Oakland if they have time) I endorse this message.
This is an awesome Jonah Keri piece about the Big Three that made me feel lots of feelings.
