this game has disaster written all over it
A's vs. Angels (RH Richards): Burns CF, Semien SS, Vogt C, Zobrist 2B, Reddick RF, Lawrie 3B, Davis 1B, Canha DH, Fuld LF; Kazmir P

remember that time the A’s pounded richards? that was fun
Not gonna lie-I’m thrilled Kaz has made it this far. It is rare you see a team go to the lengths the A’s have this year to have him avoid slegnA. Normally they would have had him pitch against them right at the start of the year and gone on about how that was all just luck of the draw.
Let’s go Oak-land!
i feel a screw job coming
Was he safe?
The mere fact that it is taking 10 minutes surely means it will go against us.
The tag was applied while Lawrie had his hand on the base. Lawrie did come off the base but the glove/ball were in the air at that point.
#1, the whole world is saying they got the call wrong.
#2, it took 5 minutes for them to get the call wrong.
This is like the dream case of why we shouldnt have replay (and Im a replay supporter).
I would like to have MLB New York Control Room Cam available. “There’s a replay request from Oakl…aw shit Angel, if you’re gonna get drunk in here please barf in the men’s room, not all over the floor.”
I looked for that and didn’t agree, but whatever. As Vince says, it means umpire Gibson blew two separate aspects of the call (wrong on the original tag, wrong on being tagged after Lawrie was off the base).
and that will be ignored by TPTB
Moreover, the A’s lose their challenge, but the aspect of the play they challenged (the over-slide) wasn’t even considered.
This is the first time I’ve heard this “entire play must be considered” stuff. Is that codified or are they just pulling shit out of their asses? It’s going to be a can of slimy, ugly worms if you ask me.
I think this may have been the reason for the second communication with New York. Melvin challenged that Lawrie wasn’t tagged after he left the base, which was correct. However, the crew chief initiated a review over whether Lawrie was tagged before he reached the base, and it was determined he was tagged. Therefore, the A’s should still have their challenge available. (I don’t think the radio announcers have clarified this; I am speculating.)
There is an “entire play must be considered” stipulation in the replay rules, but I think it only applies on those “was the catcher illegally blocking home plate?” situations. The replay umpire can then also look at the issue of whether the runner was tagged out or not.
“oh, Im sorry, you didnt phrase it in the form of a question…”
Actually, a more thorough reading of the rules blows up my theory. The crew chief could not have called for a review over Lawrie being tagged before he reached the base, unless it was the 7th inning or later. So I wonder if Scioscia initiated a review of that aspect which was upheld. In this case the A’s should still have their challenge, since Scioscia’s successful challenge of an earlier-in-time aspect of the play would render Melvin’s challenge moot.
But that’s not what happened. The A’s challenged the over-slide, and MLB determined he was out on the slide, which was not the object of the challenge. Nonetheless, it was the A’s challenge, and they lost it, so they lost their challenge.
They might have let the A’s win the over-slide challenge, and then let Scioscia challenge the initial safe call, which he was prepared to do, and then overturn that, but that’s not what they did. In effect, they had Melvin doing Scioscia’s challenge, and then screwed him for it.
Umps screwed it up yesterday as well when Lawrie was out but was called safe because Pujols juggled the ball — although at least we got to see the umpire mime “juggling the ball”, which was fun.
what I have been thinking about, because i was at ggpark and forgot my phone and had no idea what happened in the game, is the standard of review.
its clear and convincing evidence that the call was wrong on the field. so the shoulder tag should have had deference to Gibson’s call. I don’t think the shoulder tag was clear and convincing.
also, its total bullshit about charging a team a challenge on a play that too 5 minutes to decide. if that is the case, the next time there is a challengable play, I saw stand at the dugout for 5 minutes reviiewing it your damn self
Melvin didn’t – why would he? – challenge the initial tag, but that’s what was decided upon and cost the A’s their challenge. It’s total BS. It didn’t matter in the game, but if the team needed a challenge later in the game we’d be hearing about it.
In his post-game conference, BoMel said the situation was “without precedent” and that he was told the whole play had to be looked at regardless of the specific challenge. I think the challenge concept is already a flawed one, but if they go down this road there’s going to be hell to pay. How do we know the “whole play” is always being considered? What’s the point of a specific challenge?
and what is the level of review on “the whole play”
I want to know if we even know who is in the NY booth. If I knew Angel was there this weekend I wouldnt even bother using my challenges. He would probably rule that Lawrie was not tagged outoriginally, but he failed to make a ‘football move” and therefore it is incomplete, and a flagrant 1 against the A’s.
It could use some transparency. Just put them on camera during the decision making process.

Thanks, and go As.
I liked the baserunning by Aybar there, especially since it didn’t end up costing the A’s. There should be more tagging up on foul balls at the Coliseum. No, Blue Moon Odom, I’m not talking to you.
I am finding the US Open golf tournament much more compelling than the A’s today, despite the fact that Fox is just terrible at the mechanics of televising golf. Also Joe Buck is a more pompous Jim Nantz with a funny-looking head.
I’m unclear on why the greens up there look like the Coliseum outfield the day after a Raiders game.
Announcers suggest it’s due to:
1. The general practice of drying out a course for a US Open to make it more difficult;
2. The fact that this course uses both poa and fescue grasses, which tend ot encroach on each other; and
3. Crappy Washington State weather.
I haven’t seen much of this but will watch the end of this round. It’s a fascinating-looking place for a US course and pretty much the diametric opposite of Augusta National.
This is hell of a finish coming up.
Spieth’s poise in general and especially under pressure is remarkable. He doesn’t have the personal magnetism of a Tiger but still a great star for golf going forward.
I was looking forward to 18 holes on the baseball off-day. Holy shit.
Can’t believe Johnson 3-putted from 12 feet. Great finish.
Worst par in the history of golf? That may be a bit too much, but man that was tough to watch. Great finish though, the last several holes had lots of drama.
did i see you at linden street today?
Yes, you probably did. My daughter took me for pig & beer, after seeing Inside Out. A very nice father’s day. Sorry I missed you.
i saw you briefly when i was sitting down with my second plate of pig. then i went looking for you but couldn’t find you (and that green shirt was no camouflage!).
the pig was delicious and i plan to do that again…
Yeah, I’ve been to one other one there before and it’s really good, including all of the sides. His habanero salsa is the real deal.
Oh good … just tuned in in time for the dynamite.
He threw 28 pitches yesterday and now 32 and counting today? Trade value > wins at this point, unfortunately.
…although that was a nice win, by a margin of about 3 feet.
I can assure you that from 216, that last ball looked like it was gone right up until it landed in Fuld’s glove.
This game was a very nice Father’s Day gift until the top of the 8th.
Ha.
I did not think Kazmir could ever beat the Angels again. Happy to have been proved wrong.
Pirlo -> NYCFC
I mean.. yeah, it’s FKing *PIRLO* but.. fuck NYCFC.
Also, if/when Lampard ever actually shows up, they’re gonna have Pirlo/Lampard/Mix in the center mid? Villa up top?
Ugh.
Thanks, and go As.
so tevez didn’t convince him to go to boca?
Seems not.
As much as I think Pirlo is awesome, I really hope NYCFC continue to suck ass.
Thanks, and go As.
i was being sarcastic.
tevez: here pirlo, come finish your career in empty stadiums, fan turf wars, and where the FIFA investigations are still to really FK up their federation (if not find a scapegoat). andiami!!
pirlo: orrrr, i could protect my age by playing in a futsal sized pitch…
wish you guys spoke spanish. here are wiretaps on grondona (president of the AFA till he died last year) as he fixes refs (among other games, for a boca-corinthians libertadores game — “the best reinforcement boca had last year was amarilla” — amarilla being the ref during that game.), game dates/times, and talks about sums of money and the AFA divesting to evade taxes.
it’s fricking spine chilling the friendliness among mafiosi. “how ya doin’ sir?” “oh i’m great, how are you?” “a hug.” “thank you, and by the way, have the police department issue a statement that they don’t have enough servicemen available for the san lorenzo game on sunday, so we can move it to monday without our fingerprints on it. this doesn’t come from us.” “ok, perfectly clear, hugs.” “here, i’m passing the phone to burzaco so you guys can firm up.”
I KEEP PRACTICING WITH MY DUOLINGO APP GOSH.
Thanks, and go As.
there’s an app for that????????
or did you not misspell cuni.
HJMFC. there needs to be an app for practicing that. we just made a million bucks.
Yeah, Duolingo. It’s got several languages.
Thanks, and go As.
:)
now if the barras can just keep out of the game, i might have a couple fun rooting years.
