Just in case anyone cares any more. So far the first three picks are shortstops — leave some for the rest of us, will ya?

D-Backs take a guy with the most Vanderbilt name ever.
Rockies take Liverpool F.C.’s manager.
Twins take a guy with first and last names reversed.
< pines for Addison Russell >
Rodgers was meant to go to the Red Sox.
The Cubs apparently read the Grantland draft picks because the guy they took was one of their underrated faves.
Not that Oakland would have selected him, but Aiken seems like a great gamble at this point in the draft by Cleveland.
Travis Buck is representing the A’s?
the next billy beane
Thanks, and go As.
An undervalued Eric Byrnes.
Looked good for three months, then constantly hurt for the rest of his career? Seems representative.
and, boy could he sell jeans
Ricky Martin?
The A’s will be living la vida loca.
Not knowing a thing about either player till this draft, I like the shortstop Pittsburgh selected at 19 a lot more than the one Oakland did at 20.
Knowing a little about both, I preferred Martin over Newman. Reviews are mixed about Newman staying at SS while consensus is Martin will stay at SS. Both have a lack of power. Newman has the more sure Hit tool, Martin is a bit faster. Plus Martin doesn’t turn 21 until December.
That helped put him over the top for me: a 20 year old college Junior with athleticism and will stick at SS.
Is it just assumed then (and I suppose this selection would certainly support this) that Semien will not be playing at short in a year or two?
Why? It’s not that hard. Tell em Wash
Thanks, and go As.
I don’t know who will be playing SS for Oakland in 2016 but it won’t be Richie Martin. He won’t be ready until mid-2017 at the very earliest and its more likely a September, 2017 call-up is the best we can hope for.
Yeah, I think I like Martin better, too, although I have read mixed reviews about both of their’s defensive abilities and would give them a draw there. I prefer Martin’s power potential once he starts filling out that 6’0″ frame and his age. It was a decent pick.
The only negative I’ve seen on Martin’s defense is that botch the routine play more than he should. He definitely needs coaching up but at least the tools are there. (Finally)
I agree he’s not a great pick, although I don’t think there was a great bat at 20 to be had.
I’ve read some things about him still being somewhat stiff, but overall the consensus seems to be he should stay at shortstop. Keith Law was very enthusiastic about Newman, I think he had him as second overall and BP had him fifth. BA had them closest, with both going around 30.
There was a great bat to be drafted at 20, but not to be signed. Daz Cameron went 39th, but word is he is seeking north of 6MM. Perhaps Chris Betts would have agreed to slot money, if one is not scared of HS catchers.
Is he supposed to develop power? Dude barely slugged .400 in college.
He is. He has a good build and I’ve seen reports of his raw power being 50, and his in game power being 20 now, but with potential to go 50
Overall he has the profile with potential to be average with the bat and slightly above average in the field and on the bases

A lot happening on that play. Love the fall down deke from the runner at first. And stealing home to score your team’s seventh run, in the fourth inning, is an interesting choice.
Also, fuck FSU.
he may enjoy that
Hey, as a proud Bulldog I have to take offense at that. We have a friggin national title and we will not…oh, the one on the east coast?
Yeah, fuck them.
misogyny alert: Christen Press is FKing breathtaking. Like wow.
Also, that was a hell of a finish off Leroux’s fantastic run to the touch line.
I really hope Morgan is 100%, she needs to be starting up top with Leroux. Wambach doesn’t have the motor for a full 90 anymore, she should be kept on the bench until the 60th-75th minute when she can come on and be a big physical presence who can out jump and out muscle tired defenders on set pieces or crosses.
Thanks, and go As.
I concur. Press is not unattractive.
hey man happy belated. hope it was good.
Thanks, and go As.
I went in to work.
I made up for that mistake today.
And thanks.
1) RIGHT??!!
i asked her out for coffee.
waiting to hear back.
WTF I CALLED DIBS
Thanks, and go As.
sure. after you read my scouting report.
sharing is caring?
Thanks, and go As.
Is there a way to watch replays of these games online? I’m spoiled by WatchESPN.
http://www.foxsports.com/foxsportsgo/
?
they mention replays in the sideways menu below but i haven’t tried it. if i’m reading it right, the ENG – FRA game from 10am starts replay at 6pm.

Thanks, and go As.
Too sketchy for me.
Usually files just get put on Mega or something.
Thanks, and go As.
so i’ve been trying to not spoilerate that game for me. came here with eyes asquint. found the game. and among the links to DL the game… right there in blue and white, spelled out just as plain as day:
IT’S NOT MY IMAGINATION, IS IT?!
but it doesn’t say who’s
there were none! just fighting and tearing of jerseys. neymar with a red, post whistle. out 2 games. bacca from colombia too, but he’s not the one pulling 90% of the weight for his team.
EM or other parking lot mavens: Are there any free parking Tuesday tailgates in the offing tomorrow?
Not to my knowledge.
Thanks. I’ll be there solo tonight, will hang in usual lot spot awhile, drinking beer and reading this cool new book I just picked up, which seems somehow perfect for this A’s season: http://www.akpress.org/youcantwin.html
Baby, you just can’t win.
Jack Black. Jack White.
Periodic obligatory hockey plug: Tampa – Chicago heading to the third period tied 1-1, in both the game and the series.
Two goals 13 seconds apart, now 2-2. This is fun.
My biggest issue with this series is figuring out who to root for.
I have nothing really against either team, but am kinda sick of Chicago and am too envious of Tampa’s lightning quick rebuild.
Rooting for the trailing team in order to ensure over time is the obvious choice, but then what to do when it is tied? Rooting for no scoring is no fun.
I just love the way Chicago plays. Every few minutes there’s a high speed rush.
Watching a lot of these playoffs it’s pretty glaring how much worse the Sharks are than so many of these teams.
I’m rooting for Chicago, but that was a pretty game-winner by Tampa.
can we sign stephen drew now?
Seriously, kids, wash your hands.
Power out. Apparently most of Berkeley.
No problems here in the southeast.
Lucky
are they all like that?
Time to pre-order them power walls
Mine was out. Caused by a squirrel. We have a deal!!!
That’s the East Bay for you… ::shakes head sadly::
Have the squirrels been priced out of SF?
RIP Squirrel. May you be someone’s meal tonight and go out a hero.
… and that was a short honeymoon.
Heh.
After a quick glance, I like what the Astros, the Rockies and the Dodgers did, although it remains to be seen if the first two will be able to sign everybody.
The guys who are still unsigned and were high on my pre-draft list:
Pitchers
Michael Matuella RHP
Donny Everett RHP HS
Dakota Chalmers RHP HS
Justin Hooper LHP HS
Jacob Nix RHP College
Riley Ferrell RHP College
Tristan Beck RHP HS
Drew Finley RHP HS
Luken Baker RHP HS
Hitters
Jalen Miller SS HS
Kep Brown OF HS
Joe McCarthy OF College
Alonzo Jones 2B HS
Demi Orimoloye OF HS
Blake Trahan SS College
Most of the pitchers are pretty unsignable at this point, though
The name that really jumps out off that list for me is Orimoloye. He probably has the highest upside of any hitter left and has the potential to be a really interesting and impactful player.
Another player I like is Kolton Kendrick. He has massive power, which there isn’t a lot of in this draft. As a 1b prospect, the usual caveats apply.
Howdy stranger.
Hey there. How’s it going?
Not bad – interesting to see downtown buzzing with the farmer’s market and the big book fair last weekend.
Yeah, it was nice, even if the event led to some problems for us last Saturday.
Did you go to the Lacuna free book thing? It was pretty cool even though it didn’t *quite* live up to the artist’s rendering. We picked up a copy of Cosell by Cosell. Got home to find it was stamped on the inside cover as belonging to the collection of “The Honorable Thomas P. Oneill, Jr., The Speaker, U.S. House of Representatives, Washington, DC 20515.”
ex libris tip!
That is awesome! I did go to the Lacuna, and agree that wasn’t up to the rendering but there were a lot of books being grabbed. I only made it to one panel discussion but it looked like they were being well-attended.
Yup, Kendrick has a lot of power, but a questionable hit tool. If we are going for a HS 1B, I’d rather have Josh Naylor (of course, I forgot that the Marlins reached for him).
I guess there are a lot of Royals fans in North Korea
Omar Infante, of the .216/.225/.301 -0.4 WAR line, is second and gaining on Jose Altuve. Lol.
I want all 9 of them to make it as starters. Blow this shit up.
I think the National league playoff contenders are stuffing the ballot, too.
Wouldn’t you?
I’d vote the A’s in
Well sure, this season. But not last season.
Hi friends,
I haven’t been around on FK much of late and the draft made me think of you all. As for the A’s picks so far, based on what I’ve read, I worry that Martin will never hit enough to make his speed matter. And White has limited upside due to “fringe-average” power and speed and is probably has a realistic ceiling of a utility player.
That said, this year is considered a weak class overall, with a strong crop of middle infielders–something the A’s system is weak on, so sticking up on them isn’t a terrible strategy.
I’ll post some scouting reports on various A’s picks throughout the day.
at least a short stop jemile weeks is still a short stop (can I ignore grant green)
Didn’t he play second base?
These are the teams I think should be able to go over slot in the third round based on what they did in the first two:
Atlanta
Kolby Allard (D14/R12)
Mike Soroka (D28/R78)
Austin Riley (D41/R150)
Lucas Herbert (D54/R80)
Cincinatti
Tyler Stephenson (D11/R18)
Antonio Santillian (D49/R99)
Tanner Rainey (D71/R153)
Miami
Josh Naylor (D12/R65)
Brett Lilek (D50/R117)
perhaps even New York (Yankees)
James Kaprielian (D16/R26)
Kyle Holder (D30/R64)
Jeff Degano (D57/R101)
I have to think one of them picks Nix. Would be cool if it were Cleveleand though, and then fail to sign both Aiken and Nix again.
I have no feeling how scared the teams are on Matuella’s health. Tommy John and back issues, but possibly highest ceiling in the draft.
Texas took Matuella
It’s going to be really interesting to see if the Astros can sign all of their picks
Cinci takes Trahan – they have the money to do it
So this month we have a three-game home stand, followed by a five-game road trip, a five-game home stand, and a three-game road trip. That’s dumb.
Given that they make 6 separate trips to the state of Texas this season it was kind of stunning to see that San Diego immediately follows Anaheim.
18 of the next 26 at home, it would be considerate of them to improve on that .346 home winning percentage, just for the sake of the poor souls who pay to go out and watch this every night.
I would have enjoyed hearing Bill King’s thoughts on those six Texas sojourns.
“Fuck Texas.”
Uh, Bill, we’re on the air.
“Fuck. Texas. Let the law try to catch me now!!!”
“No, seriously. Fuck Texas.”
Thanks, and go As.
How Far will we have to Go North of slot to sign Dakota?
Probably a lot. I think he is going to be a tough sign, with commitment to Georgia and probably a late first round value.
They should be able to save some on both Martin and White, but with the overall budget of only $5,444,100 and $586,900 for 3.97 there is not that much room to play with.
This hard slotting system is a really irritating example of legal collusion. if this kid wants to play for pay for the next three years, he has to take less than he’s worth.
yup
Also. Assuming teams would agree that players develop better in pro ball than in college, they have set up a system that forces players into inferior development environments in order to harm their negotiating leverage.
heh
Chalmers! Wow!
Nice pick for the A’s in Dakota Chalmers. Scouting report from BA:
Yeah, he hit 98 mph this spring
How we just need to draft Skinner.
What are the signability prospects for Chalmers?
The Twins stole our guy
Let him ferment for a few years in their system and then we’ll grab him as a Rule 5.
I like Dave Zirin, but this is dumb. He should have listened to the slew of people.
Also, “this is Oakland: the city of…Berkeley”?
This is hilarious.
A’s take 80 grade name: Skye Bolt:
Are Usain his hit tool is a question mark?
Kevin Duchene Scouting report from BA:
Isn’t 6’2, 210 a little to big to have “moxie”
Thanks, and go As.
took me a sec. then again, we drank wine for lunch when i was a kid. (tall glass club soda, a squirt of malbec, a teaspoon of sugar and watch it fizz over.)
Yeah, so did we. Ours was red wine diluted with tap water
FITZ!
Guys whose teammates hate them are the new inefficiency.
A’s 6th rounder is Bubby Derby:
A’s go after another short pitcher. If he’s only half as good as Sonny, it would still be pretty good.
Both Derby and the A’s 8th rounder Nick Collins are in the 400s on BA’s list.
The A’s 7th rounder was Kyle Friedrichs from Cal State Long Beach. He’s not even in the BA top 500. I’ll see what I can find on him.
batgirl/dogfather bait. Gonna post this on Mrs doctorK’s fb wall since she is a teacher of the blind/visually impaired.
Awwwwwwwwww
Drafted and signed by the A’s in the Beane era (starting with the 1998 draft) and ranked by WAR per BRef. This is a complete list of everyone who has compiled at least 5 WAR for their career.
Pitchers:
32.9 WAR: Barry Zito, 1999/1st round
20.0: Mark Mulder, 1998/1st
17.6: Rich Harden, 2000/17th
14.4: Huston Street, 2004/1st
9.0: Joe Blanton, 2002/1st
8.7: Trevor Cahill, 2006/2nd
8.3: Sonny Gray, 2011/1st
6.3: Andrew Bailey, 2006/6th
5.4: Dallas Braden, 2004/24th
5.1: Jeremy Bonderman, 2001/1st
Position players (this list is just, wow):
22.6: Nick Swisher, 2002/1st
20.7: Andre Ethier, 2003/2nd
13.9: Kurt Suzuki, 2004/2nd
10.5: Eric Byrnes, 1998/8th
10.5: Ryan Ludwick, 1999/2nd
9.7: Cliff Pennington, 2005/1st
6.6: Gerald Laird, 1998/2nd
5.4: Bobby Crosby, 2001/1st
Is this their career WAR, or their WAR as A’s?
Total career WAR (see e.g. Ethier)
I caved and looked. That position player list….
And zero from the 2007-2010 drafts, though Tyson Ross (4.3 WAR, 2nd round 2008) and Sean Doolittle (3.4, 1st 2007) should join the list.
I’m going to be an aunt!
see, you were pregnant (adjacent)

You never let me down, dear.

Chris Heston needs 3 outs to complete a no-hitter…
That final pitch was a strike, huh? Anyway, my jinxing skills aren’t up to par.
two strike threes were bad calls. It kinda seemed like heston knew it

OMG. When does some good television shows start? I’m dying over here.
“ian” is on the verge of crediting oakland for the wave (‘cept he doesn’t actually know).
Crediting, or indicting?
they call it the mexican wave, but [why am i remembering “the reality is”?] it was bequeathed to the world by the USA.
and now i’m doing the mix-ican wave.
Well that was a hell of a damn goal.
Krazy George
It’s #39 in SuSlus book.

Comeback wins over the Dutch and the Deutsch in the same week for the senior men, a win over Colombia and a trip to the World Cup quarters for the U-20 men, and the women apparently ready to kick all ass put in front of them. Plus Loretta Lynch. We now run world soccer.
i’m hoping you suddenly realize what a bad idea it wast to crap all over the monroe doctrine in ’07!
Undefeated since we arrested FIFA!
Thanks, and go As.
Okay, I’ve been watching shows about murders. I’ve learned I should be dead in a ditch somewhere. Thanks for not killing me guys.
Yet.
Well it probably won’t be any of you all killing me.
Attention Royals-hating FKers: I have 4 seats behind the visitors bullpen for the game Friday, June 26 which I can’t use. This will be KC’s first time in Oakland since the troubles at their place in April. I will either Stubhub or exchange my tix, unless any of you want to buy em instead. Sec 106, Row 11, seats 1-4, great spot for hurling vitriol. Let me know.

I decided to look up every SciFi/SyFy movie or film listed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Syfy_original_films
What I was looking for was a general average for all of SyFy’s crappy TV movies. You know the ones. That means I’m throwing out certain stuff like Babylon 5, the Battlestar Galactica things, and The Mercury Men. Those don’t count. Same with the Children of Dune thing and I don’t think the George and the Dragon thing counts either. It’s not really SyFy’s horror formula. A Town Has Turned to Dust and Painkiller Jane kind of don’t fit either, but I’ll leave those in and go from there.
Based on this, out of about 160 SyFy films, they average a 3.6 on IMDB. Yes, the Sharknado stuff, the monster movies, all that.
Top 5?
1) A Town Has Turned to Dust – 5.3
2) Painkiller Jane – 5.2
3) Riverworld (2003) – 5.2
4) Soulkeeper – 5.2
5) Three Inches – 5.2
Bottom 5?
1) Almighty Thor – 1.8
2) Skeleton Man – 2.0
3) Avalanche Sharks – 2.1
4) Savage Planet – 2.3
5) The Harpy – 2.3
So, there you go. Shark movies made up approximately 75.8% of what I saw (percentage may be extremely inaccurate).
Not gonna lie, Avalanche Sharks sounds pretty good. But I think it was simply the Sharknado fiasco jumping the….

Via a comment at Deadspin, I learned that Ty Cobb was rumored to have called Honus Wagner Krauthead.
Calling him Liberty Cabbage Head would have been awkward.
Such leadership. What a classy ambassador for the game.

I think it’s on the main Fox network. Channel 2.

you’re quite fetching yourself, you know.
Somehow this is appropriate.
they are running player profiles now. Saw one for kristen (?) press. said she is from pacific palisades. she said when the pro league folded, she was suddenly unemployed.
I didn’t feel sorry for her
stanford grad. she can get a job.
Man, I did not know all this cool stuff about the late actor Christopher Lee.
WTF does that even mean?
do you really not know?
I get the beating Bacon part (no, not that) but I’m stumped by the non-integral number of steps.
That’s the part of the list you find striking?
(nerd)
Well, I only skimmed it.
But yes.
More than the metal Christmas album??!?
I think they took the degrees of separation between Lee for a large sample of actors and just averaged them. Questionable procedure since it is basically a logarithmic statistic.
Also, The Wicker Man (original Nic-Cage-free version) is so FKing rad.
I suppose the virtually any part is their set of data, perhaps IMDB? And then, 2.59 is probably the average length of connections to each member of the data set. Also, read the thread, EC

I totally forgot about the Chad Smith Experience.
don’t buy it
Maybe. The throw alone does strain credulity. I choose to accept the possibility of awesome.
the throw looks OK. that much water (or liquid of your choice) in a solo cup would make it act like a shuttlecock.
I can’t stop watching this.
Did you mean to put this on the Lebron one?

I can’t really get up on my high horse because the password-protected internal wiki for my grad school thesis project just got hacked and filled up with bogus entries.
I’m either mad we didn’t think of that first or happy that we didn’t get caught (yet)

Parade tentatively scheduled for 10 am Friday in Oakland if the Dubs win tonight.
One could just about transition straight from the parade to an A’s tailgate, if one were so inclined.
Suddenly not feeling well. Might be sick all week. (oh crap, the parade will be on TV won’t it?)
I’m just happy to hear they’re having it in Oakland, if they win. Because a parade through “Golden State” could get kinda tedious.
I guess Mayors Lee and Schaaf worked this out a couple of weeks ago.
Frankly, I don’t see why there needed to be any discussion (/sarcasm).
I’m off on Friday, but I have a much more somber appointment at 10am.
Thanks, and go As.
Hope all is well.
As well as can be with a 16 year old doggie.
It’s time.

“designed more as decoration than a sturdy platform to entertain large groups of friends”.
Yeah, good to know that now, assholes.
Also interesting discussion/speculation on Reddit of the various corner-cutting decisions that went into that crap job.
more of a placebo gazebo than a wraparound-a veranda, i always say.
Really? If I saw that balcony (pic #2), I wouldn’t expect to have more than one or two people on it. That’s crazy that they’d have a large group on that thing. That one just seems like common sense.
My god, that is despicable. You cannot have a “decorative” balcony with a fucking door opening onto it.
Context is missing from that article. As used by Ms Olsen, decorative was meant as “place to hang out for a few minutes of fresh air” as opposed to “place to host a barbecue for 10 friends.” She chose poor words and the Chron writer failed to provide context. It was not decorative in the sense that people were not supposed to be on it at all.
Also, Olson was on the DRC as a historic preservationist, she has no particular design expertise (and probably no business commenting).
Wooden balconies / fire escapes are ubiquitous in Chicago apartment buildings. I remember hearing about one really bad balcony collapse back when I was living there.
Yeah, bad balcony collapse in Chicago in 2003 killed 13 people. In that case, overcrowding was the exacerbating factor but the underlying cause was poor construction. That will almost certainly be the final analysis of the Berkeley tragedy also…even though there were way too many kids out there, the balcony was supposed to be built to handle that much weight. The dry rotted wood joists pretty clearly point to failed water sealing, likely at original construction, though possibly due to later maintenance failings.
That’s the one I was thinking of. Most of those balconies were built pretty well, but I still would be uncomfortable being on one with twelve other people.
And this balcony could have been used as a fire escape, in which case just as many people might have crowded onto it – if not more.

has he played more than 2 games at first?
Still gets hit by the position penalty for WAR purposes.
Another case for why defense WAR is not on par with Offensive WAR. Value to Value they’re “equal” but our ability to measure without requiring way too much sample is horribly weak.
What prompts you to say that? Zobrist’s and Burns’ positions on the list? Reddick hasn’t been great with the leather this year. The rest all seem reasonable.
Yay Supreme Court.
