Seeing as how the Grill is quite buried and the W’s are playing for a title, I figured we could kill 2 birds and get a new place to yak up.
So I guess I need some sort of link. How about an unexpected amazing sequel:

No, I did not want to watch the Finals opener tonight. There’s no place I’d rather be than a middle school auditorium watching a two hour, five act music performance.
Aaron Burr Intermediate School is proud to present Wagner’s Ring cycle in the original German!!
Best. Broncos Headline. Ever.
The Finals logo is terrible. Especially on those hats.
Holy smokes, an “Oakland” mention right out of the gate!
Apparently they’ve committed to more Oakland/East Bay coverage.
Good on them. I cringed during the WCF when Doris Burke was coming in from commercial saying “welcome back to Golden State.”
i liked that panoramic of the city (of oakland) they used. pretty.
OK, game time. I believe the W’s are about to go on a run to put this thing away.
It’s wild how the whole Cavs offense is clearouts for Bron to back someone down.
He is making it work.
work always goes easier with a lil elbow grease…
Good game. Interesting contrast in styles.
The rebounding is a concern.
so, you guys not game threading it?
My uk feed has more gambling commercials than you are probably seeing on NBC
It’s crazy how many English soccer teams are sponsored by online betting sites.
what’s crazy is how many soccer games are sponsored by online betting sites.
I’m guessing that’s Nate’s dad’s house. I had to go back and check the original – the chairs are the same, a few things on the bookshelves are different.
I just realized that Nate’s dad was my science teacher in elementary/middle school
do they all wear tshirts on the bench? jackets not cool anymore?
“Shooting shirts” are the new thing. I do miss the jackets.
My boy J Mack has a thing for head-to-toe blue warmups on the bench, for some reason.
my boy mazlo always has something to say.
no seriously, those shirts look terrible. all bunched up and uncomfortable. short-sleeve jackets or bust.
This is too intense.
Gahhhhhhhhhh
this is a lot less paternalistic than I remember basket ball. not a lot time outs for the coaches to “set plays”
You may be thinking of college ball, which is still that way.
This is too stressful.
I know! It’s fun but not fun all at once.
The crowd was so stressed Curry had to remind them to cheer when he got fouled.
ha! nice description.
Oof, Kyrie. That doesn’t look good.
did the eric Karros sounding guy just call the warriors lucky?
He sure did.
Jeez get that guy a cart or some crutches.
right?
One of your top players has seriously re-aggravated an existing injury. Of course the best thing to do is have him gamely limp down a LONG hallway while a parade of guys in suits trail after him providing no help whatsoever.
I read this morning that his agent had to talk him into using crutches on the way out of the arena. There’s been this weird tough guy subtext to his injury struggles, where LeBron and Blatt have been kind of passive-aggressively suggesting that he needed to grit it out and that his pain tolerance was too low. It’s ridiculous.
I have never sprained anything before, but after this past week, I have a whole new appreciation. It is no joke. He might have something other than a sprain, but pain is pain.
He also played way too many minutes last night for a guy who had just missed a whole bunch of games with a bum knee. I know it’s the Finals and all, but this thing lasts more than one game, and the kid is only 22. You have to bring him back carefully even if it means riding with the Australian dude for a couple of 8-minute chunks.
Fractured kneecap.
Owww.
Whew this is better.
I HAVE NO IDEA HOW MANY CHICKENS.
I’m estimating that we have one chicken.
Wow, the defense in the last 10 minutes was amazing.
LeBron maybe ran out of gas. But yeah, the small ball lineup claims another victim.
by my calculations he scored 44% of their runs
He’s no Sam Fuld, that’s for sure.
that OT was almost anticlimactic. which was fine with me, really.
I was only able to catch the last 8-9 minutes of Q4 and OT. It was tough to see Kyrie go off like that, especially after he made that spectacular play on Steph’s attempted layup in the final minute. Nice to see a game 1 win in a game that Cle had to feel they were really in it all the way through. I’m hoping that this Game 1 win might end up leading to a sweep.
Randall has lost me.
Indeed.
Speaking of which, is there a FKup brewing tomorrow?
There is – I’ll be firing up the burners at around 10:30.
Free at last!
Awesome.
YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!
I’M EXCITED
I’ll be at the game today. My seats are pretty close to the visitor’s bullpen too. I hope he gets to pitch!
Jealous!
We’re all pulling for you man.
i ended up watching it on replay after teh U-20 ARG-AUS. which, surprisingly if you only saw the basketball game, worked out as a nice tranquilizer. the soccer game was so frustrating.
my kids demonstrated more skill in just about every aspect. but austria came out for a zero tie to go through. they played the second half with two lines of 5. so tough to watch one team proposing a soccer game and another playing kick it far and wait in the box. ARG didn’t score, and the south american champs were eliminated at groups. oh well. how soon till june 11?
What is the point of shouting “defense” at a basketball game? It’s a ten second chant, max.
Speaking of, the eerie, drawn out Waaaaaaaaaaaariorrrrrrrrrrrrrrs chant is the best in all of sports.
Yes that is quite good.
Seriously. It’s so unoriginal.
OMG Hardee’s (and the West Coast equivalent) put a hot dog and potato chips on a burger.
Carl’s Jr and its East Coast equivalent you mean.
#murica
It’s actually called The All-American Thick Burger or something similar.
To me, it just looks repulsive. No matter whom they feature holding it in the ads.
Yes! Was someone holding the sandwich? I was distracted by the meat overload and missed it.
I almost think that he’d be better off resting for a few weeks than trying to pitch his way out of it in AAA.
yup
ja ja ja.
YOU ARE ALL WRONG!!!! THE LAST 10 GAMES PROVE IT!!
No, he struggled for his first six weeks as a 19-year old in high A, so clearly he’s a bust. Just like that other shortstop prospect we had.
I wrote about that in that one thread, but it got lost due to Napo’s comment.
Since beginning of May, he’s batting .311/.358/.528/.887. He had 9th highest OPS in California League in May, despite being its youngest player and playing shortstop.
His bat is playing up just fine, it’s his defense that worries me.
Worries you like he needs to play Second? Or worries you like he is Semien?
I prefer my videos to have full nudity.
I’m gonna be largely out of touch tomorrow, as among other obligations I will be driving teens back and forth to Mountain View. Sagh. So I’m making my Belmont post now.
American Pharoah is the fastest three year old horse in the world right now. He has won five straight races including the first two legs of the Triple Crown, and looked dominant in doing so. There is an excellent chance on Saturday that American Pharoah will deliver horse racing’s first Triple Crown in nearly 40 years, since Affirmed in 1978. I’d love to see it. And I’d be a fool to bet on it.
At 3:5 morning line odds, math people tell me this suggests a 70% level of certainty that AP will do what no horse has done the last 12 tries, win the third leg at the toughest track running the longest distance. The Belmont history is so grossly out of sync with the 3:5 odds that this appears to be a classic opportunity for sharp bettors to buck the public trend and maybe make some money. A couple of tidbits to substantiate this:
When the gulf between odds/expectations and value/history is this large, you wanna hit it. And that’s independent of any horse-specific reasons. American Pharoah (5) has yet to face much adversity…all clean trips for him and obstacles for many of his challengers. He’s better, but how much? AP’s jockey Victor Espinoza has a terrible career record at Belmont, only four wins in 67 races, including two previous failures on would-be Triple Crown horses. AP’s pedigree does not suggest a penchant for the extra-long 12 furlongs. And this will be his fourth race in eight weeks, facing rivals who are all better rested…no other horse has run all three Triple Crown legs this year, and only one here was also in the Preakness three weeks ago. When American Pharoah hits that long back stretch at Big Sandy, further than he has ever been asked to run in his life, will the weight of all that work prove too much? I see AP taking the lead early, closely shadowed by Materiality, and holding it to the second turn, but fading to a well-beaten third or worse by the finish line.
So, how to bet. I am tempted to exacta box every horse besides AP and call myself sharp, but I choose to believe I have a more insight than that. There are four horses I like to stand out:
Look, I’d love to see a Triple Crown won. I was happy when Miguel Cabrera did it (and after a longer dry spell). If American Pharoah wins I will be happy for him and for the sport of horse racing. But unless there’s a wet track or unexpected scratches before post time tomorrow, he won’t be on my ticket, which is:
$5 Exacta Box: 3,6,7,8 / 3,6,7,8. = $60
$10 Exacta Box: 7,8 / 7,8 = $20
$20 Win: 8
$20 Show: 7
Total handle $120
Current Belmont Stakes odds here.
Thanks for that excellent write-up. I totally forgot it was happening and now find myself home and able to watch it, so I’ll appreciate your comments as the race proceeds.
Sharing sslinger’s thanks. I happened to remember right at 3:50, ran to the TV and kick eldest off the Wii-U long enough for all the boys to watch history.
Another dominating race for American Pharoah. Never challenged. Great horse.
Very impressive, just so strong and smooth he was fun to watch.
He looks so effortless, I knew he had it about halfway through the race, even with only a small lead then. (Maybe I wouldn’t post this comment if he had faded down the stretch. We’ll never know.)
Yeah, when AP had the lead at modest paced 1/4 and 1/2 fractions I knew he had it. Materiality needed to make him work harder in the early going to have a chance.
meh. the only way a triple crowning wasn’t an absolute certainty yesterday was if the match was cancelled.
but seriously, historically speaking have there ever been 2 triple crown winners on the same day (from 3 contenders)?
ok. now we hit peak bandwagon.
NED-USA, yo.
this is horribly unfair but maybe i just need to admit it. trying to watch the WWC here, analyzing tactics, comparing abilities, but… EVEN THE REF HAS CUTE KNEES!
the US game is at 4:30, v australia.
lots of question marks as the US goes into the tournament: is babyhorse OK to play and be effective with her (cute) knee injury? is leroux
a canadian spy?fully back from her injury? is carli lloyd trying to bring the cynicism and selfishness of male soccer to the women’s tournament all by herself? how much can wambach carry? is it possible to unsee what we’ve seen of solo? and, finally, christen press, wanna grab a coffee with me sometime?Hey folkses! It’s been a while but I am back with a birthday post worthy of royalty. How this concert — a full, pro-shot show aired worldwide on satellite TV at the time — has only ever existed as an out-of-print laserdisc is beyond my comprehension, but never you mind all that. Blog with us now back 30 years to the Purple Reign of one Prince Rogers Nelson, onstage in Syracuse and 57 years old today!
I know I said it on FB, but man this was a show. My B-I-L was for a brief period in his life a Prince impersonator and he wore out his VHS copy of this from watching it so much. (It is always funny to tell folks this now as, once that brief time ended he started to his present size of about 320 lbs.)
Epic bald mullet on Santana.
Carlos’s wife/drummer stepped all over his guitar licks.
I want to watch the ball of basket, but I don’t have a television.

?
I fell asleep shortly after you posted this. :(
if this were a laker game in the 80s, chick hern would have said the mustard has come off the hot dog
and a second before it actually came off, to boot.
If this were a Warriors game in the 70s, bill King would have said #$@&%*!.
and not miss a pass
I guess the silver lining is to only be down 2 at half after shooting so poorly. I would be OK with Klay taking every shot for awhile. He certainly believes he will make every one.
To be down only 3 after that turd-pile of a quarter is even more of a miracle. Also, WTF Speights????
this game just got banned in england for facesitting.
A few observations:
1. I guess traveling is not in the NBA rule book.
2. Dellavadova may be making some good defensive plays, but the Cavs should never ever let him touch the ball.
3. The W’s need to try boxing out once in a while.
4. Curry better have a big 4th quarter.
That sucked.
Well, shit.
So all the Cavs need is Lebron to put up a triple double in 50 minutes, Curry to put up one of the worst shooting performances of any NBA finals game ever, and Mo Speights to miss a dunk in order to win by 2 in OT.
Really rough loss, but… I’d be kind of surprised if they play that badly again.
Thanks, and go As.
Feels like the Rockets series. Curry will figure out how to beat whasisname and then it’s all over.
I’m pretty much with you two. Would like to see them remember that there can be drives to the basket, and sometimes you even get fouls on those. But yeah, this felt like one of those figuring it out games, they didn’t deserve to win it, and they should have some things figured out by next game.
And I’d love for David Lee to get in the game and help earn a win. They could use his offensive rebounding and points in the paint.
I chuckled at the David Lee part. He hasn’t been any good offensively for quite a while.
Totally disagree. He had some really good minutes in the last couple rounds.
Those moments have been extremely rare ever since he lost his shooting touch, and he’s still a huge negative on defense.
Well, he’s out there after Bogut no showed the first half.
D Lee just sort of got the Warriors back into this game.
I think Curry just had a bad night. Shots like that one from the left corner (where he shoots like 90% ) that was all the way down and popped out, I mean…just not his night. The team as a whole, though, needs to figure some shit out offensively.
Is Mo Speights the new Jeremy Giambi?
I’m pretty sure Matthew Delavadova is the new David Eckstein.
That poor guy. I felt so sorry for him.
i thought it was a terrible game. I turned it off at the half, for a non fan, it wasn’t ewntertaining tv
It was definitely frustrating to watch. At some point, when shots are missed too often it just feels pointless.
It was disgusting. The end was exciting.
@Ed: Yes, that was a perfect example of a major sporting event which is hard to watch yet still competitive.
I have to say, though, when they were down by 11 with about 3 minutes to go, I thought “well this one’s over.” The fact that they battled back to get to overtime, and did it while their best player was stone cold, and only lost by 2…I think they’ll be OK.
I very much agree with this. Even with everything that went wrong, they were a couple of bad bounces from icing that game at the FT line in OT.
or 1 better last play than “give it to steph” (knowing the night he was having).
I still think they’ll be OK…if they stop FKing around for the first 3 quarters.
I think this is where all the young kids now would say “Rekt”
Thanks, and go As.
Donaldson sounds pretty blind on this one. Someone else raised the point that I’m sure most of those people in the DR or Venezuela in particular would give anything to have grown up with more opportunities in America than hoping they can sign a baseball contract to leave their countries.
That was a pretty stupid thing to say
I would say that Passan pretty much owned JD in his replies.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but hasn’t it been the player’s side that’s held up an international draft anyway? It’s in the team’s best interest to stick these players into a cost controlled draft system.
Suggested reading for Donaldson
The self-funded FIFA hagiography “United Passions” took all of $397 in its US opening weekend!
A book about haggis?
would you settle for a book by haggis?
https://store.mcsweeneys.net/authors/dr-and-mr-dorishaggis-on-whey
No whey.
Good lord. Is that for real real?
It can’t be, right? No newspaper editor anywhere is that bad. Right?
Supposedly it is. Some small paper from Oregon
It has to be an intentional Charles Shackleford nod by a bored copy editor.
Jim Romenesko has the scoop:
If you haven’t seen it already, I warmly recommend it: The Battered Bastards of Baseball
It’s a full length documentary (free, on YouTube) about the Portland Mavericks, Bing Russell’s independent A team in the seventies. It’s really a great baseball story.

Love this so much.
A Jogarza can’t be stopped!
One of my best friends had almost no interest in baseball his whole life. He has started watching because of this movie. He is always saying we need a Jogarza.
i don’t want a nailbiter or a loss of any type. he dicho.
The yellow unis are confusing to this noob.
i never did learn which one was kid and which one was play.
I was more into Full Force.
This hurts to watch.
oh you so thug, lebro. must be why i like you so much.
[slefreplyfail]
i choose to see it as the cost of curry getting his shot back.
Mascherano would have been proud of that slide tackle he put on Steph.
That was an utter bullshit call. I guess in the NBA you are allowed to wipe people out provided you’re going for the ball and you happen to be a superstar.
Maybe they should try not falling behind by 20 before the 4th quarter heroics.
Hey, the A’s aren’t 20 games back yet.
We’re only midway through the second quarter.
Maybe the MVP should actually lead the damn team
It worked!
