His Z-swing percentage (swing rate on pitches in the strike zone) is just 60.9% this year. which is 29th lowest out of qualified hitters. In past years, Reddick has been between 69 and 74%. He’s seeing 50.3% pitches in the strike zone, which is basically right around his career average (49.6%). So yeah, it looks like he has really been a lot more patient.
Of course, we wouldn’t normally think that it’s a good thing to watch pitches in the zone. Fortunately his O-swing percentage is below career average too (24.1% vs 30.3%). And his contact rate on pitches in the zone is up (91.6% vs 87.0%).
