Welcome back to your favorite afternoon soap! I believe Stephen Vogt gets a break today.
Fuld CF, Semien SS, Davis 1B, Butler DH, Reddick RF, Lawrie 3B, Canha LF, Sogard 2B, Phegley C.
Jesse Chavez vs. Garrett Richards.

Feels like a Saags day.
3 foot tall kid throws first pitch for a perfect strike.
Kendal graveman is like 6 5 and there is no way he can doe that
I’m next to the Anaheim bullpen, who should i taunt?
Our bullpen.
cam bedrosian, wait no optioned. Huston. can I buy a vowel?
double steal, double steal double steal
Half right.
You got the “double” part right. On pace for 49 GIDP.
Butler already holds =3rd on the all-time season GIDP list with 32 in 2010.
Which player holds both 1st and 2nd place?
Which two former A’s does Butler share 3rd place with?
Rickey
Thanks, and go As.
Of the 20 players with more than 10,000 AB, Rickey has the 3rd best AB/GIDP with 64.
1st place has 91, 2nd place has 73, both have names beginning with B; who are they?
Wait, is Lou Brock the Greatest? Rickey is not the Greatest?
Brock is indeed the leader in this category.
Answers for the interested:
Biggio in 2nd
Barry Bonds and Bobby Bonds
No and no.
Bonds
See above.
I thought Ben Grieve hit into at least 40.
He’s one of the 2 ex-A’s, with 32 in 2000 and 103 for his career.
I think he had 32 in Game 5 alone that year.
Looking up a logical guess, I’m amazed that Ray Fosse started 139 games in 1973 and only GIDP’d 10 times.
How great is that?
Kendall? ISTR him making a run at the record.
Nope – only 26 in 2005.
Probably also not the answer anyway, but at some point the A’s had someone who was hitting into a really impressive number as a lefty. Can’t remember who it was though. (Not Cust – his K’s and fly-ball tendencies helped limit his DPs)
That would be Ben Grieve.
I thought there was someone more recent, but must be misremembering.
The only LH hitter subsequent to Grieve who stands out is Hatteberg in 2005 (22 GIDP in 523 PA).
All right, I got frustrated and looked up the other one besides Grieve. That name hadn’t occurred to me because his GIDP glory years came after he left the A’s.
Though he managed 21 as an A in 2002.
Answers for the interested:
Jim Rice hold 1st and 2nd places and Miggy is the other ex-A tied for 3rd.
why they don’t try to steal every time butler steps to the plate with less than 2 outs and a runner non first I will never know
The new scoreboards are amazing in the day time.
Also there are a surprisingly large number of kids here, and the Make Noise scoreboard imperative resonates with them.
I never got an A’s game field trip. We always had to go to a dumb museum or something.
like Alcatraz?
fuck you vince
that wasn’t a terrible ab by lawrie standards
Eno Sarris at fangraphs got an insane quote from Lawrie about that day when he struck out four times on 12 pitches.
Love this.
this fucker again
Does it seem like the Angels have had a ton of 2-out RBI this series?
Every series.
It seems like they employ a collection of Fuckheads who do nothing except against us.
dear umpires, mike trout is the best player of hos generation. he is great at baseball. but if there is one hole in his offensive game, its strikeouts.
please stop giving him extra strikes. that was 4 maybe 5 strikes in that at bat
Hey, where the hell is Kara? Sub gal lacks sincerity.
Who do we see first: Kara, Ken or Coco?
Vince mentioned that Coco may be activated during the Twins or (more likely) Mariners series next week.
zito
KenKo! You ARE the father!
Sub is awful. She needs to learn that the microphone and the sound system are amplifying her voice, NO NEED TO SHRIEK!
On gameday audio this year on At Bat, instead of playing all of the local ads they are overlaying calls of classic mlb moments. I’ve now been treated to Ichiro’s sniping of T-Long several times.
I heard that one about 5 times last night. At least they could vary them a bit.
I’ve heard Lon Simmons calling Mays’ 600th a bunch too.
That one too! Over and over last night!
It’s a bye bye baby bonanza.
safe
dumb decisions shouldn’t be rewarded
“not necessarily conclusive”
ray
Ray’s inability to admit when the A’s benefited from a bad call would be endearing if it weren’t misinformation from a guy whose job is conveying information.
this one was pretty easy, I don’t know why it took so long.
someone should tell ray that he is on mlb highlights with these plays and not just a’s fans watch
I was thinking, “Angel Hernandez must be working the monitors in New York.” But he’s in Oakland. So it has to be C.B. Bucknor.
Damn. You gotta field the catch/tag play differently in the replay Era.
yup
Yeah, and this doesn’t seem to be recognized. Umpires and teams never treated those plays with precision before. If the ball beat you, you were out.
(Mind you I have no idea how that might apply to this play because I am listening to Roxy and Vince.)
yup
That was a horrible attempt at a tag. Sweep his damn arm away.
Also if it is going to take more than 1-2 minutes it should be call stands regardless.
Vince: “Why is this taking so long? What is going on in the replay center in New York? There is no other game right now. Did they go out for Chinese food?”
Poor Jesse is pitching his skinny little ass off.
One final FKwiz …
The real metric of interest is single-season GIDP per opportunity; which catcher holds that record at 28%?
(Butler managed 25% in 2008 and 24% in 2010.)
Molina
No way that’s not a Molina. It must be Bengie.
No, though Yadier’s 27% (27/100) in 2009 is good for 4th worst.
I’ll say Kendall. Again.
Still no!
How about Pudge? He didn’t strike out much so his GIDP percentage should be fairly high.
Excellent! 25/88 in 2010.
Pudge made a nice run at Ripken’s career record but fell just short.
Pujols may become the all time record holder first, but eventually I like Miguel Cabrera’s chance at the magic 400 plateau.
So it’s a 4-run comeback before the bullpen implosion today.
We can’t reasonably expect them to comeback before the bullpen explosion every game.
Comeback or not, they’re definitely imploding (exploding?) every game now.
Ex-. Im-. Whatever. They got some ‘ploding to do.
‘ploded just enough.
Or after, whichever.
3 outs really seems like an insurmountable barrier for EOF.
Kids sound like they’re having fun, tho.
That’s what’s important. The kids.
As one who views relievers like cats, 9 lines, I say Cook is done.
They’ve already used his 2015 option so he’ll get familiar with those Oakland – Nashville – Oakland flight schedules.
Southwest has one non-stop flight a day.
Wanna get away?
Only if it doesn’t involve flying.
We’re having a Heat Wave, and he certainly can Canha-Canha!
Canha-HA!
When at the Brazilian steakhouse, I recommend the piCanha.
You know, our catcher looks Phegley familiar.
A didn’t take a nap today. I feel productive.
OMG…TWINS! I have been wide awake all day and actually getting stuff done, even though I have also been wasting time. Nice day when you dont sleep through it.
I did some laundry. Downloaded some music for my road trip tomorrow. Got the mail.
Canha? Ah can.
Free game of the day.
Still blacked out.
Thanks, and go As.
Hola.
at work tho
Thanks, and go As.
So you could watch the game at work but not use a proxy?
Yeah.
Thanks, and go As.
Oh man.
Dayum.
Nice try, but…the last time the A’s were 5 games under .500 at the end of April was during the
GerenMachaHowe era (8-17 in 2001).Maybe those Opening Night losses aren’t such a bad idea after all.
Are the Astros the 2001 Mariners.
Well, shoot.
Nice try, fellas.
:D
Thanks, and go As.
i don’t get it. why is ed writing brandon’s twitter?
Saw mb at game on jumbotron. He appeared to have a new kid strapped to him.
Was he wearing gear? Was he wearing his jersey? I hope he wasnt wearing his jersey…
A’s gear. Not the FK jersey.
You know, in 2012 those balls were dropping in.
I was thinking the same thing. This team is starting to feel like the Bizarro Bernies.
Hey.
Sup?
Want to go see the new Avengers movie on Saturday?
I was thinking before the epic tease, that I am not too disappointed in the game.
EOF and Cook are terrible, yes, but Chavez was good. one terrible call on trout and the angels don’t score the first run.
Semien doesn’t fk up the double play they don’t score the 4th run.
THe runs themselves were bad luck for jesse. Richards had good luck. he wasn’t pitching well.
the 3 run ninth was only frustrating by 1) muncy swinging at all. and 2 the strike one to davis. totally changed the AB. that pitch is called correctly, the A’s win.
Also, nearly anyone except Trout in CF and it’s Pie City, Arizona.
I just caught the replay now. Wasn’t he playing exceptionally deep given that a single could win the game there?
I think the answer is he is Trout and felt he could run in and catch anything or at least throw out a winning run at the plate.
Throwing arm is pretty much the only thing that Trout is average at.
But if I was Mike Trout I am sure I would be thinking that. Hell, if I was Trout I’d probably stand at second and see if there were any fly balls I couldnt track down.
We’d be back to back to back WS champs with him instead of Green. And probably still have Donaldson.
It was a bad choice.
to davis in the 9th:
trout in the 3rd
Mr. Trout will let you know it is a strike by hitting it over Mt davis.
Ultron for umpire.
Richards overall
OMG. I won early entry for tonight’s show! WOO!
And you havent seen Ultron yet?
Tomorrow.
To me that is a bigger upset than your theoretical new hatred of baseball.
evolution, it’s just a theory. climate change, it’s just a theory. j-nursey’s hatred of baseball, it’s just a theory.
What show? And do you have to drive to Michigan for it?
Avett Brothers. Springfield, MO
But don’t you have to pick up the hitchhiker in Omaha first?
Not going this time. Solo. Lone wolf.
One woman wolfpack.
how many buttons did yo uhave to undo!?!?
Thanks, and go As.
Russell did a thing.
