Don’t Start a Ri-ot: Grillin, Is what I got 232

The last grill was so full of Revy goodness that it seems like we need to get some fresh links up in here.

(and doesnt it feel nice to hear that?)

I am usually a very unassuming guy. But when needed I can be brave. But I doubt I am brave enough to punch a bear to save my dog.

I hope I would be brave enough to punch my kid for stealing TVs and stuff.

And I hope most of you are busy right now wondering if no one attends a game did it really happen?

Finally, I want to repeat a request that may have got lost with Hamilton gate. I am looking for the name or any info of a documentary of the Art Deco bridges in Oregon. I saw this a few years ago and fell in love with the look.

check it out.

I have looked in all the obvious places I can think of, but have yet to find the film I saw. It was on HDNET (I think) and was probably an hour or so. If any of you know it, or can think of some places to look outside of Netflix, Hulu, etc pls let me know.

Link it up fools!

Wednesday’s birthday tribute is to a universally acknowledged icon of American music… possibly THE icon. Born 82 years ago today — ain’t it funny how time slips away? — blog with us now as we witness another birth: that of an iconic TV series (still going strong) way back in 1974. That’s correct… here comes a rarely-seen DVD of the pilot episode of AUSTIN CITY LIMITS, and featuring the birthday boy himself, the incomparable Willie Nelson.

I had not heard about Mr. Homes until today, but it is zooming up my list. Gandalf as a retired Holmes makes things interesting for me.

And I cannot stay away from San Andreas, even if it isnt under the tutelage of Irwin Allen or Roland Emmerich. The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Kylie Minogue, and Paul Giamatti. all you need is Faye Dunaway and O.J. Simpson.

Yep. I can totally get not feeling it’s worth the current admission prices, but it just comes across haughty when people take pot shots at films just because it doesn’t meet their personal ideal standards. It’s one thing if they legitimately try to bill the film in a self-important way. Whole other thing when it doesn’t.

    Worse idea from the 49ers?

    This: http://www.instantreplaysportcard.com/items/helmets/%2791%2049ers%20proto.jpg

    Or this: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CD3GkuwWAAI3hdr.jpg

I’m generally a fan of black and red color combinations in some cases, but not for the 49ers (even if it’s just an alternate), and not like this. It’s an obvious case of “BFBS,” which you should be able to figure out if you think about what the A’s have done in the past.

    • 5Aces Apr 30,2015 12:23 pm || Up

The second one is just awful.

The first one is the old “replacement logo” that got New Coked, right? If they used that as an alternate and a hat tip to the old days I would think it would be ok.

End of day whatever. I’m just loving that today the lilest Ace spent a minute or 2 asking me “Dad, whats the autumn wind?”.

It’s an all-black uniform with no real hint of the actual team colors beyond red numbers and a gold Nike logo. Take away the helmet, and there’s nothing about it that makes you think “49ers” whatsoever. Even with the helmet, it barely qualifies.

It fails as an alternate uniform because of that, and because it’s just completely lazy to make an all-black uniform these days.

This is even worse than the black A’s jerseys from the past.

Then she was looking at my playlist and saw an Offspring song. She was like “ive heard of them, ‘x’ (some guy in one of her boy bands) likes them as an inspiration from when he was little”. I proceed to plant an apple tree and yell at kids to stop taking the apples and get off my lawn.

Supposedly they wanted silver helmets (yeah, let’s not get TOO Raiders-like, Niners) but the NFL has a rule against alt uniforms having different helmets. Okay, then.

Someone elsewhere loves them because in his words, they look “mean.”

You act like most people dislike them just because they’re different. I dislike them because they’re just a cheap marketing ploy that involves far too much black (Black For Black’s Sake).

The only gold in those uniforms come from the helmet (which they wanted to have silver for the alts, go figure) and the Nike logo. Why not red/gold socks? Why not a gold outline or drop shadow for the numbers? Why all black?

It’s just a pointless alt that really does nothing to make you think “49ers.”

And I said it either here or elsewhere: black and red is a color combination I like in some cases. It doesn’t fit the 49ers.

While I’m still not a fan of a solid black top and bottom for a team like the 49ers, that gold touch would be an improvement, yes. I really don’t know why they wouldn’t have done this to begin with, except for the fact they have no outlines on the numbers for their normal uniforms as it is.

One I’m not too sure on is the mention that the numbers are hard to read. Sure, gold numbers would’ve stood out a lot more and I guess we’ll have to see how it comes out on TV, but the promo images make the red numbers look pretty clear. I see he had the same complaint I did about not at least using gold as a number outline, and he makes a good point about there being basically no gold at all when the NFL is using a lot of it for the 50th Anniversary stuff.

        • 5Aces May 1,2015 10:31 am || Up

See and the 50th is the one point I dont think matters. I would assume they will use these for more than one season, so that tie in doesnt matter.

But, I think having a simple bit of gold somewhere when your whole normal schtick is based on gold would have made sense.

Also, I cant agree with his point on “owning black” in the bay area. First of all that isnt how this stuff works, and second we all know the Niners may own all NFL uni colors in the Bay in the next year or two.

I get his point on that, though. The 49ers going with a black alt/uniform set can be seen as trying to take a page from the silver and black, especially when you factor in the 49ers wanted a silver helmet for this.

Now, in their history, the Raiders did have gold at one point, and the 49ers did have silver helmets, but this is where we are now.

@Aces: I’ll look it up and post tonight. The key choice is whether you muddle a fistful of mint leaves into the drink cup itself, or make a mint-infused syrup. The latter is the only acceptable choice.

          • FreeSeatUpgrade May 1,2015 5:03 pm || Up

No, not too late at all, and “infuse” in this case is me using a foodie term for what really just means “let a bunch of mint leaves soak in your simple syrup in the fridge overnight, then throw out the mint leaves.” Here’s one of many examples of the version of the recipe I make.

Basically you need a shitload of mint. A bunch to sit in the syrup tonight, then a sprig (which I like to dust in powdered sugar, because the more sweetness you add the more whiskey you can suck down without noticing how wasted you’re getting) for each glass you serve tomorrow.

sometime during the A’s game, after the Derby but before the fight, you may want to switch to beer, because Tecate (which I often drink anyway) is offering up to $50 mail-in rebates against your Pay Per View cost.

@GM: For the record I am rooting for Manny (but expect Floyd to win). Could be a great fight though.

To your question there are two reasons people want Mayweather. First, to see him reach the ranks of the historically great. And second, because he is the last great exemplar of a fascinating boxing style practiced almost exclusively by old time black fighters. This is a great article about this dynamic.

You hit all my points here. Totally rooting for Pac Man, but unless he has a wayback machine I dont see him winning.

And I do think Mayweather is an interesting fighter. At one of his last fights I was talking to friends and we came to the conclusion he is a pugilist vs the boxers everyone else is.

But I dont think he will ever be considered truly great. Rather than appreciating his technique, modern folk consider him a guy who hits and stays away.

Sounds like a pretty good strategy to me.

            • 5Aces May 1,2015 2:54 pm || Up

It’s a fantastic strategy. Pretty much everyone who was there hated him. But we all agreed his strategy is why he could and would always win. He knew how to do it and stay away enough.

But we all also thought that was yet another reason people lost interest in boxing. And Manny is the great counter to that. I remember when he was first making it big. All of my friends would never miss a Pacman fight because he was going to go in and throw haymakers for however many rounds were needed. It was exciting and people want to see that vs sticking and moving.

(BTW-all Aces boxing comments should come with the note that I am a total boxing novice and am probably wrong about it all)

But I will say that for me-I could never have watched boxing like Mayweather on a regular basis because my exposure to the sport as a kid was Rocky. I expect a fight to involve 2 guys so tired they can life their arms to defend themselves, blood on the shorts, and a double knockout.

that people don’t listen to new music after 33 study that’s been going around, i should be reading it as new-to-the-world new, not as-of-yet-unknown-to-the-listener new, right?

but here’s the real question, what’s up with the circular graph format? does it help reveal something i haven’t caught yet? it works just fine if i’m looking at one year, but i’m actually having trouble looking for trends in it. just wondering if it’s a new standard in visual representation or if he’s merely doing something that doesn’t really work.

ok, another. does having the study based off spotify stats skew the results?

This is new to me and cant wait to check it out.

One question for right now? How does it account for new music by artists that arent new? Much like your question on yet unknown to me. What about if I singer I liked when I was 33 puts out a new album when im 41? What if he joins a new band? I know that a guy I first found out about when I was right around 33 has done that and I listen to his new band and music.

And I am sure that spotify skews the results. Though I would actually think it would skew more in favor of doing new stuff. For instance, my results wouldnt show since I have never used it. I would think typically older people more set in their ways would not be included.

That makes sense, but then I have to think if the something different should be measured. So, trying to think of a good example, When Steel Wheels came out in 89, I am sure that a number of older folks were listening to “new” music. But there can’t be anyone who would have said those people were listening to new music.

I need to actually stop and read this. It sounds fascinating and I’ve been in a thinking mood today-this might send me down a wormhole..

song level might be a good enough start for the basic premise (and i’m still reading the premise as: listening to newly created music as a measure for engagement with pop culture at its formation-horizon).

what you’re talking about seems to invite advanced complications, which would be interesting to look at, but would also have so many special circumstances to account for that wouldn’t really show trends but oddities, as revealing as these may be.

last night, not even talking about this, mrs AV and i were thinking about artists that precede one’s interest in music, but that you discover just as they’re catching their second wind, and as a listener you’re a little befuddled.

we were listening to mel tourme, and both realized the first time we heard of him it was during that night court episode, and how he was presented as a revered old singer no longer singing, so it made sense. but compare to, say, peter gabriel, and how we “discovered” him during his second period as this quirky pop innovator(ish) guy with funny videos, who seemed new to us, and how we’d never in a million years have guessed he even knew that mainstream corny singer of lite romantic hits, by whom i mean, “do you like phil collins?” then we watched bits of american psycho on youtube.

The representation of the data is ridiculous and actually obscures information – adding curvature to an axis makes the derivatives visually misleading.

I will disagree with that. When I was a kid top 40 ended up being Wham, ABC, Lauper, etc.

I listened to it and it started me branching off into lots of different stuff.

Another guy I know still has “ABC” days where thats what he listens to.

So listening to top 40 will not keep you listening to it forever new or not.

(side note-who the fuck do you have an ABC day? And this guy loves music-it isnt like he listens to 2 songs that day and stops. He has a fairly large music collection that for all intensive porpoises ends about 1993)

You will not fall into that pattern. Still havent read any of this (the kids just left with ex-Mrs Aces for the coast so Im sure I will this weekend) but I feel confident in this.

Both es-Mrs and I are 42 now and we are still finding new music. Will everyone have some sort of “back in my day”? yeah. Thats why the 84 Tigers will always mean something to me even though I have never liked the Tigers. Baseball is best when you are 10-12.

But people who understand that it truly wasnt better then will have the ability and desire to move on. Mrs. goes out of her way and laughs at listening to older music because she refuses to get old and be that way. I love my old music and it will always hold a place for me, but I try to make a point of not listening to old stations in the car, etc so it forces me to hear something newer.

you gotta make the distinction when saying “still finding new music” as to whether you mean new to you (but recorded in the past) or newly created music.

they talk about it in the article (read it already, it’s like 5 ¶s long, much too short and that’s why i have so many questions) that maybe people stop listening to newly created music because they are getting deeper into finding the unexplored holes in the music that was new when they were younger. that describes me pretty well. i’m on the lookout for obscure hidden rocksteady all the time, even though none of those songs were recorded after 1972.

partly incorporating ed’s comment, i don’t listen to newly created music much because i don’t know where to find the stuff i would like. sure, i can turn on the radio or walk into tj maxx and listen to rhyance, but that’s not what i like any more than back in the day i woulda liked turning on the radio or walking into marshall’s and listening to madonna.

That theory does make sense to me. As a kid I found and liked Prince..YEAH Purple Rain and 1999. Now, when I am listening I want to find things like recording of the early part of the Controversy tour where he was opening with Sexuality instead of the the changes to the set he made later. Or more B-sides and deep cuts, etc.

Another thing that made us different is right around that magic 33 mark, Mrs got a job at of all place Hot Topic. So she was forced to get exposed to a bunch of emo screamo and other things we wouldnt have listened to otherwise. 95% of it was blegh. But we found a couple of folks who were good musicians, have great pipes, etc. So from there you start to follow what they do.

OMG OMG HOW HAVE I MISSED THIS!!!!???!!!1111

DROP WHAT YOU ARE DOING FOR TGHE NEXT HOUR OR SO.

Youtube has a copy of a show from the Controversy tour-the full frigging concert. For Prince, who is serious in his “keep my shit off of youtube” this is something.

                  Notes:

He opens with a spiritual called The Second Coming. This same song, ran backwards, is on the end of “Darlin Nikki” on the Purple Rain soundtrack.

This is the modified set list. As mentioned above, the first concerts of the tour started with “Sexuality” before he changed it to start with “Uptown”.

Ray asks: How awesome would it have been to go see Prince with opening acts of The Time and Zapp and Roger?

Pre-Revolution line up here. Replace Dez Dickerson with Wendy and you basically have Purple Rain.

This cocky little punk is 3 months removed from being booed off the stage about as fast as a Gong show act while opening for the Rolling Stones at the Rose Bowl

Finally, love that he has one of my all time favorites for an encore:

As andeux rightly pointed out, there are two answers, depending whether we only look at the qualified players or any. Let’s settle on any, as this is a cumulative stat.

Ryan Sweeney is 127th out of 182. Mark Ellis is 181st. The very last player is an active member of the A’s roster. The top two are not.

This is a very good article on fangraphs, summarizing some of the early returns from StatCast hit f(x) data.

Taking fly balls (exit angle between 20 and 50 degrees) and ranking players based on how hard they hit their fly balls, there were three players with fly ball contact scores >300 in 2014 (100 is average): Stanton (407), TROGDOR (329), and Chris Davis (321). That’s the sort of intersection between hard data and common sense that makes me think they are on to something.
