The last grill was so full of Revy goodness that it seems like we need to get some fresh links up in here.
(and doesnt it feel nice to hear that?)
I am usually a very unassuming guy. But when needed I can be brave. But I doubt I am brave enough to punch a bear to save my dog.
I hope I would be brave enough to punch my kid for stealing TVs and stuff.
And I hope most of you are busy right now wondering if no one attends a game did it really happen?
Finally, I want to repeat a request that may have got lost with Hamilton gate. I am looking for the name or any info of a documentary of the Art Deco bridges in Oregon. I saw this a few years ago and fell in love with the look.
I have looked in all the obvious places I can think of, but have yet to find the film I saw. It was on HDNET (I think) and was probably an hour or so. If any of you know it, or can think of some places to look outside of Netflix, Hulu, etc pls let me know.
Link it up fools!
I was not aware that SuSlu’s book is finally happening. Did we talk about this and I missed it?

I like how the trigger for a new grill has become strident disagreement in the previous one.
I support Traditional Grilling. No Same-Subject Grilling!
Comment in the grill, not Bill and Grill..or something like that.
lies! outright lies! My trigger was things were starting to slow as we got up to a few hundred comments.

Wednesday’s birthday tribute is to a universally acknowledged icon of American music… possibly THE icon. Born 82 years ago today — ain’t it funny how time slips away? — blog with us now as we witness another birth: that of an iconic TV series (still going strong) way back in 1974. That’s correct… here comes a rarely-seen DVD of the pilot episode of AUSTIN CITY LIMITS, and featuring the birthday boy himself, the incomparable Willie Nelson.
Ugh. Alcides Escobar just got plunked in the head.
And Ventura is pitching for KC.
And somehow THAT’s the first game he gets taken out of
See? Now that we have a NEW grill, we can truly say we’ve grilled around.
Hah hah!
I’ve been stuck in a Craig Ferguson youtube vortex for the last two days.
I wonder if Statcast is capable of measuring my total disdain.
Ok, this is more a lounge question, but I’ve made too many posts recently.
What are the 5 movies you are looking forward to this year?
The Force Awakens
Age of Ultron
San Andreas
Mr. Holmes
Tie between Terminator: Genysis and Vacation
Entourage, bro!
Never saw even a second of it. It’s one of those weird holes in my pop cultureness.
Broooooooo.
The idea of a show about someone famous and his hangers on held zero interest for me.
As I’ve said before, it is a bad show that I somehow binge-watched every episode of.
harumph. i’m making a stand against this rehash warmover loop…
ooh! i see woody allen is putting something out about a guy who still uses the word existentialist (at a first year city college dropout level i bet) while having / to excuse an ethically questionable affair with a younger woman!
can i just send my $12 directly to an academy member who thinks a valid excuse from participating in the industry that keeps him alive is that nobody hand delivered a free screener to him? please??
I can understand this viewpoint even if I do not endorse it.
I had not heard about Mr. Homes until today, but it is zooming up my list. Gandalf as a retired Holmes makes things interesting for me.
And I cannot stay away from San Andreas, even if it isnt under the tutelage of Irwin Allen or Roland Emmerich. The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Kylie Minogue, and Paul Giamatti. all you need is Faye Dunaway and O.J. Simpson.
for what? a david zucker spoof of hollywood idealessness called sequel: the prequel!
No, for a classic Hollywood disaster flick. I’m sorry you dont go in for the ultimate cheese of the genre, but dont puncture my balloon!
Yep. I can totally get not feeling it’s worth the current admission prices, but it just comes across haughty when people take pot shots at films just because it doesn’t meet their personal ideal standards. It’s one thing if they legitimately try to bill the film in a self-important way. Whole other thing when it doesn’t.
oh, i wasn’t complaining about the price.
Jurassic World. Mockingjay.
The Silmarillion, Page 1.
I would but the intermission after the first paragraph seems a bit much.
6 hours without a break is tough though.
asvd
Age of Ultron
Jurassic World
Mad Max
The Man From U.N.C.L.E
There’s no top 5.
Not even Ant Man?
No. And I LOVE Paul Rudd.
And the whole world like Michael Douglas. I’m not seeing your issue.
I’m ok with you being wrong here, but I wish you would do a better job explaing your dislike for the other like 15 popcorn flicks coming out this year. Hell, I figured you would have that Magic Mike movie on your list at least…
Major issue 1 – Michael Douglas
Ok well thats just silly. I dont even like Michael Douglas but I love Michael Douglas. He’s the American President! He’s Steve Keller working the Streets of San Francisco. He’s married to CZJ for christ’s sake!!!
I don’t know exactly what is coming out, but I’m super exited about Age of Ultron and also the next season of Luther on TV.

Worse idea from the 49ers?
This: http://www.instantreplaysportcard.com/items/helmets/%2791%2049ers%20proto.jpg
Or this: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CD3GkuwWAAI3hdr.jpg
I’m generally a fan of black and red color combinations in some cases, but not for the 49ers (even if it’s just an alternate), and not like this. It’s an obvious case of “BFBS,” which you should be able to figure out if you think about what the A’s have done in the past.
The second one is just awful.
The first one is the old “replacement logo” that got New Coked, right? If they used that as an alternate and a hat tip to the old days I would think it would be ok.
End of day whatever. I’m just loving that today the lilest Ace spent a minute or 2 asking me “Dad, whats the autumn wind?”.
Correct, re: the helmet.
Oh god. No.
Here’s what they should have gone with:
Paul Lukas at Uni-Watch is going to have a field day with these alt uniforms.
Yea, and verily, it came to pass.
The funny thing is that the black/red uniforms are basically the non-contact jersey Colin Kaepernick wore and people LOVED.
Now that it’s officially an alt, people hate it.
I don’t get it though. It’s an ALTERNATE. It’s supposed to have a different color.
Thanks, and go As.
It’s ugly, and it makes them look like some half-assed college team desperate for attention.
But that doesnt mean Mike is wrong. Saying the “alternate” should be basically the same with some shading doesnt make sense.
I’m not a big fan of alternates in general. But if you’re going to do one, it should feature one of your team colors.
they should have to wear it at a home game in September in the day
one of their colors is red
Thanks, and go As.
Come on, man.
I hate it when Stanford wears their black alternates.
Except when that was the alternate we won the SB. QED.
It’s an all-black uniform with no real hint of the actual team colors beyond red numbers and a gold Nike logo. Take away the helmet, and there’s nothing about it that makes you think “49ers” whatsoever. Even with the helmet, it barely qualifies.
It fails as an alternate uniform because of that, and because it’s just completely lazy to make an all-black uniform these days.
This is even worse than the black A’s jerseys from the past.
Gold pants vs. black pants?
I kind of love that crazy ass helmet. The black unis are awful.
That abortive new helmet launch remains hilarious after all these years. So cheap looking.
You know what though? For the time, that helmet isn’t too out of place. It actually would fit right in with what most “new” helmets looked like then. Of course, IIRC really the only new helmets anywhere near then were the USFL:
I almost made a crack yesterday about how that helmet would make sense if the niners were being relegated to the USFL.
The objection at the time wasn’t so much the logo design as the removal of “SF” from the logo, as if Eddie D. were threatening to move from the Pigsty to the boondocks of Santa Clara.
I hate getting old. Little Miss Ace is starting to fall more and more into popular stuff. So she wanted to go get an old school music t-shirt like the cool kids. Her choice? American Idiot. OLD SKOOL?!?
Then she was looking at my playlist and saw an Offspring song. She was like “ive heard of them, ‘x’ (some guy in one of her boy bands) likes them as an inspiration from when he was little”. I proceed to plant an apple tree and yell at kids to stop taking the apples and get off my lawn.
heh
I honestly didnt even know where to start. I figured I would lose her attention by the time I got to “and the Offspring songs he likes are crap from after they sold out…”
FKers-more help pls.
Do we know anyone who works for Amazon? They supposedly have an opening for a North America Workforce Manager and I would really like to see if someone who works for them can get me any info, etc.
I already did the application, etc but this is like my job and I have been thinking of moving to the NW. Honestly couldnt be a better fit if I can just get foot in the door.
Thanks in advance, and sorry for being such a needy Aces recently.
ask me 7 years ago
ok…hey Ed, did you know someone who worked at Amazon 7 years ago?
Wait, did I know you 7 years ago? This is going to get tricky real quick aint it?
LOL, terrible.
Terrible.
That looks like my high school football team.
Looks especially bad with the normal helmets
Supposedly they wanted silver helmets (yeah, let’s not get TOO Raiders-like, Niners) but the NFL has a rule against alt uniforms having different helmets. Okay, then.
Someone elsewhere loves them because in his words, they look “mean.”
I like em. Whatever.
It’s truly amazing the way people hate/fear things that are different.
Thanks, and go As.
You act like most people dislike them just because they’re different. I dislike them because they’re just a cheap marketing ploy that involves far too much black (Black For Black’s Sake).
The only gold in those uniforms come from the helmet (which they wanted to have silver for the alts, go figure) and the Nike logo. Why not red/gold socks? Why not a gold outline or drop shadow for the numbers? Why all black?
It’s just a pointless alt that really does nothing to make you think “49ers.”
IDK. I’m not a designer. Maybe they wanted to keep them simple?
Thanks, and go As.
I’m generally a black fan. I’ve liked plenty of uniforms that others have called BFBS.
I am not a fan of those jerseys.
And I said it either here or elsewhere: black and red is a color combination I like in some cases. It doesn’t fit the 49ers.
OK, so I saw this on reddit.
Just a tiny change, and all of a sudden they actually look FANTASTIC.
Thanks, and go As.
While I’m still not a fan of a solid black top and bottom for a team like the 49ers, that gold touch would be an improvement, yes. I really don’t know why they wouldn’t have done this to begin with, except for the fact they have no outlines on the numbers for their normal uniforms as it is.
Agreed all around. That’s a WAY better look.
I dont disagree. But are they actually doing this? Or is this just a smart person showing an improvement?
The latter
Thanks, and go As.
Ants are real assholes.
Not aunts, of course. Though we can be. But at least millions of us wouldn’t go invade some stranger’s kitchen just because she missed half of a chicken wing that fell under the table.
So you’re not waiting in line for Ant Man either?
I was waiting for this, from Paul Lukas of Uni-Watch:
http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/12798826/how-49ers-whiffed-new-alternate-uniform
Hadnt read all the way down when I relinked next to your comment from yesterday.
One I’m not too sure on is the mention that the numbers are hard to read. Sure, gold numbers would’ve stood out a lot more and I guess we’ll have to see how it comes out on TV, but the promo images make the red numbers look pretty clear. I see he had the same complaint I did about not at least using gold as a number outline, and he makes a good point about there being basically no gold at all when the NFL is using a lot of it for the 50th Anniversary stuff.
See and the 50th is the one point I dont think matters. I would assume they will use these for more than one season, so that tie in doesnt matter.
But, I think having a simple bit of gold somewhere when your whole normal schtick is based on gold would have made sense.
Also, I cant agree with his point on “owning black” in the bay area. First of all that isnt how this stuff works, and second we all know the Niners may own all NFL uni colors in the Bay in the next year or two.
I get his point on that, though. The 49ers going with a black alt/uniform set can be seen as trying to take a page from the silver and black, especially when you factor in the 49ers wanted a silver helmet for this.
Now, in their history, the Raiders did have gold at one point, and the 49ers did have silver helmets, but this is where we are now.
brand association black/raiders is pretty established. as much even as: what color is coke? what color is pepsi?
they’re both brown. but i bet your mind went elsewhere.
No way man, I no know what youre taking abou..
I did sort of like this in uni-gate:
But then that moment when your team forgets it’s own history-however brief:
Yeah, there you go.
Flashing the FSU signal: (pt 3 of “Aces is a needy beeyotch” week)
I’m sure you are going to cover this tomorrow, or you may have done so when I mentioned them earlier this week, but what is your go-to Julep recipe? I’m going to be home alone tomorrow and decided I need to get a little plastered for the fastest 2 minutes in sports.
More important than the juleps even, when can we expect the betting lines?
Jeez let Primera get her homework done!
Priorities, please!
@Aces: I’ll look it up and post tonight. The key choice is whether you muddle a fistful of mint leaves into the drink cup itself, or make a mint-infused syrup. The latter is the only acceptable choice.
Am I too late to infuse?
No, not too late at all, and “infuse” in this case is me using a foodie term for what really just means “let a bunch of mint leaves soak in your simple syrup in the fridge overnight, then throw out the mint leaves.” Here’s one of many examples of the version of the recipe I make.
Basically you need a shitload of mint. A bunch to sit in the syrup tonight, then a sprig (which I like to dust in powdered sugar, because the more sweetness you add the more whiskey you can suck down without noticing how wasted you’re getting) for each glass you serve tomorrow.
sometime during the A’s game, after the Derby but before the fight, you may want to switch to beer, because Tecate (which I often drink anyway) is offering up to $50 mail-in rebates against your Pay Per View cost.
For a boxing match in May Tecate sounds perfect. That is my go-to Raiders drinks. And in cans pls. It is also loved because it is $2 at thirsty Thursdays down here.
I’m soaking a batch of mint syrup right now. I had some mint that needed to be used and I’ve been looking for an excuse to buy bourbon (like I need an excuse!)
So it looks like I’m going to be stuck watching the Fight tomorrow whether I like it or not. I hate boxing, and know nothing about it, but can someone explain why anyone is rooting for this Mayweather a-hole?
he has versatility in running on the lead and winning from off the pace, has yet to lose, and it’s hard to find a fault with the son of 2008 kentucky derby winner?
@GM: For the record I am rooting for Manny (but expect Floyd to win). Could be a great fight though.
To your question there are two reasons people want Mayweather. First, to see him reach the ranks of the historically great. And second, because he is the last great exemplar of a fascinating boxing style practiced almost exclusively by old time black fighters. This is a great article about this dynamic.
http://deadspin.com/why-floyd-mayweather-is-the-last-of-a-kind-1700672546
You hit all my points here. Totally rooting for Pac Man, but unless he has a wayback machine I dont see him winning.
And I do think Mayweather is an interesting fighter. At one of his last fights I was talking to friends and we came to the conclusion he is a pugilist vs the boxers everyone else is.
But I dont think he will ever be considered truly great. Rather than appreciating his technique, modern folk consider him a guy who hits and stays away.
Sounds like a pretty good strategy to me.
It’s a fantastic strategy. Pretty much everyone who was there hated him. But we all agreed his strategy is why he could and would always win. He knew how to do it and stay away enough.
But we all also thought that was yet another reason people lost interest in boxing. And Manny is the great counter to that. I remember when he was first making it big. All of my friends would never miss a Pacman fight because he was going to go in and throw haymakers for however many rounds were needed. It was exciting and people want to see that vs sticking and moving.
(BTW-all Aces boxing comments should come with the note that I am a total boxing novice and am probably wrong about it all)
But I will say that for me-I could never have watched boxing like Mayweather on a regular basis because my exposure to the sport as a kid was Rocky. I expect a fight to involve 2 guys so tired they can life their arms to defend themselves, blood on the shorts, and a double knockout.
Are you talking about his personal relationships?
Thanks for the link. That’s a really interesting and informative piece. I also like the way the author works in the endemic corruption as if it’s as much a regular part of the sport as weigh-ins and shiny shorts.
Blurb on ESPN.com right now:
Winning the weigh-in sounds like the boxing’s equivalent of the good face.
Yes, and Teddy Atlas is most definitely boxing’s Joe Morgan.
Does Floyd have a girlfriend after all his crap? No girlfriend means no confidence…
Aces: Since you appear to have won at Stump the FKers, I’ll suggest posting your Oregon bridges question over at the roadgeek forum. There’s a subforum specifically dedicated to bridge discussions.
Thank you. I also found some Oregon board of tourism or something like that and sent them an email. I’m really starting to think I imagined it.
There is a Modern Marvels episode on the PCH but I havent found a place to download it yet. Once I do hopefully im wrong and that is what im thinking of.
Trying to get details, but just heard on the radio that In-N-Out has bacon.
Somebody on the radio is trying to start a “Secret Menu” rumor? They attribute a lot of their success to the bare bones simplicity of their menu. McDonald’s franchisees have been complaining about their bloated menu for a long time.
No, apparantly someone brought back an April Fools joke a month late. grumble grumble…
And if I was a McDonald’s franchisee I would complain first about having to use q-ing ovens (microwaves)instead of coming straight off the grill. And for Christ’s sake put the onions on the meat not right on the heel.
that people don’t listen to new music after 33 study that’s been going around, i should be reading it as new-to-the-world new, not as-of-yet-unknown-to-the-listener new, right?
but here’s the real question, what’s up with the circular graph format? does it help reveal something i haven’t caught yet? it works just fine if i’m looking at one year, but i’m actually having trouble looking for trends in it. just wondering if it’s a new standard in visual representation or if he’s merely doing something that doesn’t really work.
ok, another. does having the study based off spotify stats skew the results?
This is new to me and cant wait to check it out.
One question for right now? How does it account for new music by artists that arent new? Much like your question on yet unknown to me. What about if I singer I liked when I was 33 puts out a new album when im 41? What if he joins a new band? I know that a guy I first found out about when I was right around 33 has done that and I listen to his new band and music.
And I am sure that spotify skews the results. Though I would actually think it would skew more in favor of doing new stuff. For instance, my results wouldnt show since I have never used it. I would think typically older people more set in their ways would not be included.
my guess for the first one is that they’d do it at song level, if you like this song playing right now despite artist history, but that’s just a guess.
That makes sense, but then I have to think if the something different should be measured. So, trying to think of a good example, When Steel Wheels came out in 89, I am sure that a number of older folks were listening to “new” music. But there can’t be anyone who would have said those people were listening to new music.
I need to actually stop and read this. It sounds fascinating and I’ve been in a thinking mood today-this might send me down a wormhole..
song level might be a good enough start for the basic premise (and i’m still reading the premise as: listening to newly created music as a measure for engagement with pop culture at its formation-horizon).
what you’re talking about seems to invite advanced complications, which would be interesting to look at, but would also have so many special circumstances to account for that wouldn’t really show trends but oddities, as revealing as these may be.
last night, not even talking about this, mrs AV and i were thinking about artists that precede one’s interest in music, but that you discover just as they’re catching their second wind, and as a listener you’re a little befuddled.
we were listening to mel tourme, and both realized the first time we heard of him it was during that night court episode, and how he was presented as a revered old singer no longer singing, so it made sense. but compare to, say, peter gabriel, and how we “discovered” him during his second period as this quirky pop innovator(ish) guy with funny videos, who seemed new to us, and how we’d never in a million years have guessed he even knew that mainstream corny singer of lite romantic hits, by whom i mean, “do you like phil collins?” then we watched bits of american psycho on youtube.
The representation of the data is ridiculous and actually obscures information – adding curvature to an axis makes the derivatives visually misleading.
The basic trends seem to be rapid change till 25, slow change till 33, no change after 33.
This. A more honest title might be something like “kids go to college and get exposed to music beyond what plays on top 40”
i don’t know. that expansion period seems natural. it’s the slowdown that is interesting. reading this, i’m all like, nooooooo, don’t say that! as i see the huge gaping mires in what he’s saying (there’s always some form of “music used to ________ when i was young, and they don’t do that anymore therefore it’s not as good.”). and yet, i recognize having thought those things at some time too.
I haven’t read any of this and won’t. so my hot take is people that listen to top 40 don’t really care about music so they may listen to Rhiaynce which is new all the time, but its not really new.
I will disagree with that. When I was a kid top 40 ended up being Wham, ABC, Lauper, etc.
I listened to it and it started me branching off into lots of different stuff.
Another guy I know still has “ABC” days where thats what he listens to.
So listening to top 40 will not keep you listening to it forever new or not.
(side note-who the fuck do you have an ABC day? And this guy loves music-it isnt like he listens to 2 songs that day and stops. He has a fairly large music collection that for all intensive porpoises ends about 1993)
I think I love ABC guy.
You dont. I wont get into it because yeah, we wont go there. But you think he is scum but with a funny sense of music.
You will not fall into that pattern. Still havent read any of this (the kids just left with ex-Mrs Aces for the coast so Im sure I will this weekend) but I feel confident in this.
Both es-Mrs and I are 42 now and we are still finding new music. Will everyone have some sort of “back in my day”? yeah. Thats why the 84 Tigers will always mean something to me even though I have never liked the Tigers. Baseball is best when you are 10-12.
But people who understand that it truly wasnt better then will have the ability and desire to move on. Mrs. goes out of her way and laughs at listening to older music because she refuses to get old and be that way. I love my old music and it will always hold a place for me, but I try to make a point of not listening to old stations in the car, etc so it forces me to hear something newer.
you gotta make the distinction when saying “still finding new music” as to whether you mean new to you (but recorded in the past) or newly created music.
they talk about it in the article (read it already, it’s like 5 ¶s long, much too short and that’s why i have so many questions) that maybe people stop listening to newly created music because they are getting deeper into finding the unexplored holes in the music that was new when they were younger. that describes me pretty well. i’m on the lookout for obscure hidden rocksteady all the time, even though none of those songs were recorded after 1972.
partly incorporating ed’s comment, i don’t listen to newly created music much because i don’t know where to find the stuff i would like. sure, i can turn on the radio or walk into tj maxx and listen to rhyance, but that’s not what i like any more than back in the day i woulda liked turning on the radio or walking into marshall’s and listening to madonna.
newly created.
That theory does make sense to me. As a kid I found and liked Prince..YEAH Purple Rain and 1999. Now, when I am listening I want to find things like recording of the early part of the Controversy tour where he was opening with Sexuality instead of the the changes to the set he made later. Or more B-sides and deep cuts, etc.
Another thing that made us different is right around that magic 33 mark, Mrs got a job at of all place Hot Topic. So she was forced to get exposed to a bunch of emo screamo and other things we wouldnt have listened to otherwise. 95% of it was blegh. But we found a couple of folks who were good musicians, have great pipes, etc. So from there you start to follow what they do.
OMG OMG HOW HAVE I MISSED THIS!!!!???!!!1111
DROP WHAT YOU ARE DOING FOR TGHE NEXT HOUR OR SO.
Youtube has a copy of a show from the Controversy tour-the full frigging concert. For Prince, who is serious in his “keep my shit off of youtube” this is something.
Notes:
He opens with a spiritual called The Second Coming. This same song, ran backwards, is on the end of “Darlin Nikki” on the Purple Rain soundtrack.
This is the modified set list. As mentioned above, the first concerts of the tour started with “Sexuality” before he changed it to start with “Uptown”.
Ray asks: How awesome would it have been to go see Prince with opening acts of The Time and Zapp and Roger?
Pre-Revolution line up here. Replace Dez Dickerson with Wendy and you basically have Purple Rain.
This cocky little punk is 3 months removed from being booed off the stage about as fast as a Gong show act while opening for the Rolling Stones at the Rose Bowl
Finally, love that he has one of my all time favorites for an encore:
” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen>
OK. glad to have that reinforced. i thought i was missing something in the graphs.
Agreeed on the graph format. Circular graphs of all types are terrible. Pie charts are the worst.
Things you think about while driving to get breakfast after having this discussion:
-How do I not have a copy of 2 of Hearts by Stacey Q?
-(When the radio Station plays Why You Treat Me so Bad by Club Nouveau): they need a version of this song with like Michael McDonald or Teddy Pendergrass singing it.
Welp, here I am rooting for the Giants. I hate this.
I wasn’t aware of the naming conventions in the Korver family. They sure sound like Kreepy Kristians.
I dont think I know who the Korver’s are. But from what you put here, to me they sound less like Kristians and more like the Klemens family.
Kyle Korver is the shooting guard for Atlanta Falcons. Son of Kevin, nephew of Kris, brother of Kirk, Kaleb and Klayton and father of Kyra.
So much like Koby, Kody, and Kacy Clemens. Why didnt Roger just change it to Klemens andget it over with?
And the problem is?
A quickie – which A’s hitter has the highest Clutch score over last 10 years?
Cespedes?
Qualified only or all hitters?
(I looked it up. No one is guessing this either way.)
totally from wishcasting? Scutaro
Gotta be Cody Ross, right?
No correct answers so far. Cespedes is #4, Scutaro #10
Crisp ahs been on the team the longest in that time frame, but per andeux comment, ryan Sweeney?
My wild guess is Mark Ellis. (Sorry, I screwed up the tags the first time.)
Mark Ellis is the second worst
To me that’s more surprising than whoever the best might be.
As andeux rightly pointed out, there are two answers, depending whether we only look at the qualified players or any. Let’s settle on any, as this is a cumulative stat.
Ryan Sweeney is 127th out of 182. Mark Ellis is 181st. The very last player is an active member of the A’s roster. The top two are not.
Based on the no one will guess hint, it’s gotta be Emil Brown, CY25, or H2N3
For #2, also #1 on the qualified list, I’d say even worse than that, although I have to admit that a quick solution of the flu/influenza nickname doesn’t come to my mind
Hannahan
Wow. Excelent. Wonder how I never noticed that one before. No, it’s not him either.
I guess that was mostly before you got as active here. But yeah, I always liked it as a nickname.
It’s also a good way to remember the spelling.
Well, the very last is probably still Reddick as I remember he had the single worst season in clutch history.
As for the best, my guess is Jay Payton. High average hitter I haven’t thought of in years.
So I cheated and checked and….I’m right?! Wow. I guess the high average guys I haven’t thought of in years was the right train of thought. Also considered Kendall + Kotsay. I also thought of Erubiel Durazo, but he didn’t make the last ten years and he wouldn’t have been nearly as good a guess.
You sure are. Well done.
Jay payton
Yup
nerds!
More evidence we were jobbed by injury last year
I thought Lucroy was supposed to be a great pitch framer. He doesn’t look so awesome there. Norris is predictably terrible.
Too lazy to go back and find it, but that goes back to me comment the other day. Every time I see Everything Bagel throw out a runner I think what if.
Why is he called Bagel?
A’s ad ref. Can’t find it on the YouTubes yet.
In the ad Butler is convincing everyone they need breakfast nicknames. IBISV wants everything bagel because he is so versatile. Also Doo wants omelet because “Omelet you think I’ll throw a slider, but I throw the fastball”. Among others…
I know this isnt true, but it feels like every line in every commercial that Doo is in is just him ad-libbing. It fits with his tweets and everything.
hmmm..now that I type this, I wonder if he has his GF look over the script and make suggestions.
After two HR yesterday, Vogt’s WAR has the 4th best WAR in MLB, behind Dee Gordon(?!?), Matt Carpenter, and Trout. His wRC+ is 207(!), which is behind only Nelson Cruz and Adrian Gonzalez. Actually, Reddick slightly edges out Vogt in wRC+, but he doesn’t have enough PA to qualify.
DFWAS … House Science Committee budget proposals:
40% cut in NASA Earth Sciences
12% cut in NSF Geosciences
10% cut in DOE Environment
>50% cut in DOE Renewable Energy
>50% cut in DOE Advanced Energy
Maybe we can boost NASA funding by suggesting Galt’s Gulch on Mars.
Planetary Science, and specifically human space exploration, is already receiving all the funds removed from Earth Sciences.
Yeah, it’s pretty amazing the stuff that they *do* think it’s a good idea to spend money on.
Forgot the air quotes around “Science”
That is just awful.
Thanks, and go As.
It’s the US House of reps. Be grateful you’re not teaching creation science now.
Then they’ll brag about how renewable energy can’t compete with coal/oil
Nice birthday present, huh?
Still, have a great one, Julian!
damn
This is a very good article on fangraphs, summarizing some of the early returns from StatCast hit f(x) data.
Taking fly balls (exit angle between 20 and 50 degrees) and ranking players based on how hard they hit their fly balls, there were three players with fly ball contact scores >300 in 2014 (100 is average): Stanton (407), TROGDOR (329), and Chris Davis (321). That’s the sort of intersection between hard data and common sense that makes me think they are on to something.
Stanton hits the ball like it owes him money.
Thanks, and go As.
pretty sure it does
Little known fact: MLB ditched Rawlings this year and now uses baseballs made by Jeffrey Loria’s indentured servants.
Do you know where the data is? Is it somewhere in the Gameday files?
I don’t know. I was surprised by the reference to “At Bat Premium” in that article — not sure what it is.

Yikes.
Absolutely horrible.
and violation of the flag code, yeah?
Which happens all the time.
Thanks, and go As.
Hahahahaha like sports teams care about the flag code.
or most other clothing manufacturers like ever.
Thanks, and go As.
or republicans. which is the weird part.
But what if the flag on the clothing is on fire?
Let’s torch a tea bagger and find out.
you have no say in this
the detached arm illusion is especially creepy in this photo.
Are we sure this is post-arm loss? This looks like it could be Pyromania era
