LET’S GO OAKLAND!
So, whatsthematterwithGentry?
cahna cost us 2 runs last night. I give him a pass.
And no move to get some middle infield help.
Are we still talking about LAST YEAR?
This early in the season it should be a no brainer to DL him. Give him his two weeks off to get shit settled and healed so that it doesn’t become a chronic issue throughout the season. But no, rush back and make it worse.
Joey Wendle hit a home run tonight. Just saying.
I thought we called up Addison Russell?
Cody Ross in the 5 hole. Sagh.
at least ross cares that he struck out
The Canha-Gentry-Ross outfield guarantees that the argument about the semantics of “batting around” won’t bleed over into this game thread.
That’s good, I was really beginning to worry about how obviously blatantly wrong some people were. :P
Thanks, and go As.
Chortle!
I have a bad feeling about lefties in this series
Taking Vogt out of the lineup has to hurt.
(he’s in the lineup)
(Yay!)
This Cody Ross thing is not funny anymore.
Siddown fish.
how was the last pitch to trout not a strike? what are the mikes complaining about?
Siddown Al.
that might have been low
Not a strike, but still, shuddup, Scioscia.
When Scioscia finally gets fired or retires I’m not sure there will ever be another manager I loathe as much.
Shouldn’t their thunderstix be red?
TWSS
I had to explain to someone at the concert Saturday why they shouldn’t use the term “thunder clap” to describe anything. I make friends by describing angry vaginas.
That works also if I had posted “Why are their thunderstix yellow?”
“Why are their thunderstix limp?”
Pom-Poms strikes out Trout, Pujols and Freese but needs 21 pitches to do it on a night when we’d like to see him get at least 19 or 20 outs.
Russell 0-5 with 3Ks. And they moved him to second base. We sure dodged a bullet with that guy.
why is sogard playing?
You got another idea?
dl Hahn and bring up wendel? two lefties this series skipping a turn
Wendle is a LHH also.
I don’t accept your facts
Can we get Russell back? We don’t even have Submargarine anymore.
Thanks, and go As.
I think that was your idea though
Because one time Billy Beane blasphemed the god of middle infielders and got us cursed.
good AB at least
…otoh if we beat Santiago with this bunch…
Is there something wrong with Gentry? Or is this just a tough slump that looks worse because it’s coming at the start of the season?
his on base percentage is 100 points higher than his batting average, he’s fine
I’m going to say tough slump made to look worse by sporadic playing time.
look at it this way, he is guaranteed to have a healthy year
AYBAR!
the way theses crafty lefties are working this game will be played into tomorrow
safe
dammit.
Slow game is slow.
you are kidding me right?
seriously
That’s like giving up a 3-run homer to FKing Sogard.
Anyone want to try for the obscenity-filled rant record?
if pomerantz hits a chair tonight, do we lose olson?
too soon
This inning was over. Our guys were walking off the field and everything.
hark! a break!
Someone’s leg?
if pujols gets on, they bat around
Has he gone full to every single batter?
try not to punch a FKing wall again pomz
Thanks, and go As.
At least if Cody Ross blows out his arm pitching mop-up tonight nobody will give a shit.
I am trying to do the math on this one. ALverez for 2, then scribner for 1, eof and abad?
Uh, Roxy, if Cowgill, Ross and Rickey all bat right and throw left it is specifically not a “unique” combination.
Argh, that’s infuriating. I wish the ghost of Bill King would slap him for that one.
Unfortunately, the more I hear Roxy, the more I think he should stick to his college football and basketball work.
inferior schooling
It kind of seems like Lawrie would be a better shortstop than Semien is.
wow, the angels really let pomeranz off the hook.
and geeze one lousy pitch to one lousy batter…
Ugh, some mighty hapless at-bats from the good guys.
Pomeranz staggers through 5 innings, but after all the generally excellent starting pitching these last two nights have been a couple of clunkers.
bad and unlucky is no way to go through life son
And also the A’s are unlikely to remain one of the top 3 hitting teams in the AL.
This game is the shits.
Like last year, the vs LHP lineup is probably gonna be a problem all year, which is exacerbated by Zobrist’s absence tonight.
A lot rides on unproven guys like Phegley, Canha, and Semien. The strongest A’s hitters besides Butler, Vogt and Davis, won’t be playing or would be severely handicapped. The rest are guys who simply can’t hit anymore (Gentry, Ross), and a total wildcard in Lawrie who has not looked good at all against either handed pitchers.
I do wonder what coco will do.
Coco and zobrist instead of Vogt and sogaard is better
You misspelled Gentry and Ross.
I completely blocked them out of my mind
Coco’s had a 80 wRC+ against lefties since 2012. That might still be better than some of what they’re currently throwing out there but it’s not going to help much.
HE IS THE SPARK PLUG
at 6-1 in the 6th, the A’s don’t HAVE to bring the infield in vince
Houston’s reign of terror atop the AL West is looking like it will continue for another day.
Make that for two more days! The Seattle bullpen is not so hot right now either.
Damn, this is avert-my-eyes ugly. So I’m thinking I’ll avert them now.
it passed that long ago. now its in the must see what comedy befalls the team before the epic 11 run 9th
Gentry adds an error and has a great chance at the Golden Sombrero.
wow. this will straighten out our pythag
As of this morning*, bbref still has the A’s at 9-6 by pythag.
*I’m like 80% sure that those standings have been updated to include last night’s blowout.
The A’s are 74:60 in runs, good for Pythag .603 W%, so yes.
vince
“and they have batted around for the second time”
Hmm, Vince or Vin. Tough call…
Vince just said the Angels have “batted around for the second time tonight”. Aybar was the eighth batter in this inning.
aw come on colin, you gotta try to score that
Keystone Kops stuff now.
vince: ground ball up th emiddle and through, sogard up with it…”
cal has made a poor showing defensively this series
If they insist on continuing to play Canha in the outfield it will never be very good. The Semien part is addressed below.
Semien is a mess out there.
I like his raw ability and think he will be a pretty good MLB shortstop if they stick with him. But it’s going to be a tough couple of months while he gets those reps. He should get them, because where’s the alternative?
Ptui.
been waiting years for you to say something remotely negative
Ptui, I say. Ptui.
street on the royals
Good grief, no, not Abad. WE WANT CODY! WE WANT CODY!
when was our last position player?
Frank Menechino, 2000-07-18
We probably don’t have any scabs on the roster to use this time.
cody ross could have served up a homer
drop the mask josh
its not the 8th?
I stopped watching, are we winning yet?
almost. soon
no shut out for you guys!
Ross does have a MLB pitching record, and a 0.00 career ERA at that.
gameday quit on my phone. still bottom 7 10-1
GOLDEN SOMBRERO!! (digs up Tijuana Taxi on Youtube)
Nice of the A’s to join our discussion about the batting around
And about pythag
Ike Davis is pitching
are you fucking kidding me
Thanks, and go As.
Maybe try him in a higher leverage situation next time.
This performance by the bullpen should help even up their Clutch score at least.
Eighth time in Oakland A’s history.
Jeff Newman – 1977
Wayne Gross – 1983
Garry Hancock – 1984
Mark Wagner – 1984
Vance Law – 1991
Kevin Seitzer – 1993
Frank Menechino – 2000
Ike Davis – 2015
(Page 656, 2015 media guide)
Cumulative record including Davis’ 1-2-3 inning:
9-1/3 innings, 12 hits, 4 runs (all yielded by Menechino), 3 walks, 2 strickouts.
This still isn’t over?
Nevermind. I guess gameday just decided “FK it” and walked off the job after the 8th.
mine in the 7th
Mine in June 2014. We’re winning this thing, right?
Can we get Venditte up in this team now? Surely there’s some deadwood on the 40 man.
alverez has lovely hair, but 3 options. jazz hands won’t be worse.
Donaldson .345/.403/.600 174 wRC+ 0.8 WAR
Lawrie .250/.300/.339 80 wRC+ 0.1 WAR
Graveman 6.94 ERA 7.10 FIP 5.93 xFIP -0.3 WAR
Barreto .152/.204/.261 29 wRC+
Nolin DNP
I honestly think that trade might become Beane’s worst in his career. Russell at least begat Semien.
For now we must take our SSS solace at first base.
Davis .317/.396/.488 149wRC+ 0.4 WAR $3.8 million
Moss .143/.268/.286 65 wRC+ -0.1 WAR $6.5 million
Butler is looking pretty decent too: .375/.435/.554 181 wRC+ 0.7 WAR even with DH penalty
If the 2015 A’s go down in flames, there might be teams out there who see the extra two years on Butler’s deal as a bonus.
That .422 BABIP is not gonna last
No, but he seems to be recovering from last season’s power outage.
My eyeball scouting says that he has been hitting the ball exceptionally hard.
The eyeball scout in me says the guy who’s been robbed the most has been Semien. I feel like he’s had multiple hard hits to the OF either right at a fielder or chased down.
I still think his defense will eventually come around but that hasn’t done too well so far.
Slusser just retweeted this a few minutes ago:
Might be. But if you replace his 2015 BABIP with his career norm of ~.320 you end up with a line of .295/.360/.455, very similar to his 2011 line when he was a 1 WAR player (albeit in a slightly more hitter’s park)
Not anymore
For a man with his speed?!?
It didn’t
Chris Young, .344/.432/.844, 242 wRC+, 0.8 WAR, $2.5 M
Oh my god.
my thoughts exactly
It was weird. I tried typing the comment like 4 times and it wouldnt take.
I decided the universe knew much better than I did how to express my CY25 rage.
Isn’t the problem with the greater than and less than punctuation being interpreted as tags? I use parentheses instead, so:
(buys large gun and airplane ticket)
or:
< buys large gun and airplane ticket >
< feels like an idiot for forgetting about that >
or:
<buys large gun and airplane ticket>
This may even work:
Nope.
Well, that was fun while it lasted.
No solace there anymore either
Gah.
Apropos of nothing, the Padres must be pretty satisfied with their moves so far:
Norris: .321/.345/.446
Middlebrooks: .259/.295/.500
Upton: .315/.356/.574
Myers: .313/.343/.453
Kemp: .361/.394/.541
More of a mixed bag now.
(wRC+)
Norris 116
Middlebrooks 93
Upton 154
Myers 132 (injured)
Kemp 72
And then, there’s defense.
That Kemp move looks absolutely horrid.
Also, you may want to flag this for inflammatory meta.
Nothing has changed.
I know I shouldn’t be surprised, but … wow, what a petty spiteful ignorant fuckface.
I guess being off by an order of magnitude is consistent too.
Counting is for people who don’t have the feel for the game.
He failed the eyeball test, too.
And as others said – it shouldn’t surprise me, but I do find it sad that he repeatedly goes after my work, throwing absolutely false statements and knowing I will not go back there to correct him.
He is a very small, very insecure person.
holy fucking shit
I logged on, flagged it as inappropriate and made this comment.
Good.
Did it get deleted already? I don’t see it.
I see it, but in case anyone else can’t, Alan Torres (aka Cuppingmaster) reminisced about Bojan’s work, specifically the old Carlos Gonzalez piece, and Nico commented:
Reality reminder: He wrote like 4 articles ever.
They were great but they were mostly that one.
After another comment, he added:
Yeah, I’m just always amused at the revisionist history
when people say “He wrote such great stuff! Remember the ‘God on the Mountain’ piece?” He wrote something like a post every 2 years — that “God on the Mountain” one and…um…and…er…a couple other ones.
I know SBN’s way has gone fully over to “quantity over quality,” but Nico didn’t have to be so obvious about proving it.
No I see all that, but not Ed’s comment. But I guess maybe Ed means he commented in the flagging process. I never flagged anybody so I don’t know how that works.
Ed has to run over to Nico’s house and throw a yellow flag on his keyboard.
Oh, Ed flagged it and you can’t see those comments.
so I made a comment. I don’t use the email address associated with that account anymore, so I won’t know anything about this until he says something that dumb again in a few years and I try to log in
Ed’s comment, for as long as it’s visible:
meta un banned now?
how petty is this?
do you really think this comment adds to the discussion that was occurring? seriously, what is wrong with you?
Tagline?
That guy reminds me of me sometime before the whole “E-MAIL ME” thing took off.
ha! good lord. and he chooses to stay above the fray
Nico replied to that, too. Someone ought to remind him this isn’t the first time he took a shot at the lie that Bojan hardly ever wrote anything for AN.
so the comment will stay I assume
You’ll probably get a strike for meta.
Or maybe 5Aces will. :-)
That aces guy is a moron.
“righting”…I dont know if I can edit comments over there but no way will I change that. gives me SBN bro credibility…
I hate that I cant just stay away. I really feel petty and stupid commenting. I even told myself I was going to act like an adult, smirk and walk on. But the above the fray just was too much.
” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen>
Appropriate, since that song is about how great it feels to give into one’s inner asshole.
I am ok being a dick when he says shit like that
No tag line please.
The only fray Nico is remotely above is Walder.
eh, maybe
I vote against explicitly **-referential taglines, but I also don’t prevent anything.
I was being ironic anyway.
Nico’s right in a sense: When your website doesn’t publish anything interesting for five years, the stuff that came before is all the more memorable.
Now that is a comment to make: “4 good articles? Thats like a year’s worth now…”
in the flag comment box. not where it would be deleted… but maybe I should
Amazing
Seriously, fuck Nico.
And I’d rather have a rare piece from Bojan than any of Nico’s vapid bullshit.
40 posts over about 3 years … once a month isn’t that rare!
Here’s the other thing. AFAIK, Bojan was never asked to hold any particular writing schedule on AN. I’m pretty sure the arrangement was always that they’d welcome anything he had to write whenever he had something to write about, so for Nico to play this passive-aggressive “He never wrote anything and when he did it was great but always the same thing!” crap is really low…and exactly what I’ve come to expect from him.
ugh. i’m such an asshole. to me! tried. but couldn’t stop myself from commenting.
maybe it’ll be that workaround i’ve been looking for on how to delete AN from my SBN blog memberships.
Hey, I’d have gone and rubbed his nose in it myself if I hadn’t been banned way back when.
Thanks (and to others) for stepping up. I will not go back there, ever, but I do appreciate when the lies he spreads are being countered by facts. I know not every piece was as popular as that about Carlos Gonzalez, but it’s not like none of the other ones were well received. If we go by recs, in those 40 posts I wrote, I averaged 19 per post. I checked now, in more than three years since I left there were thirteen posts all together to even reach that number.
What a fucking piece of shit.
Thanks, and go As.
After a while time starts making memories hazy and I wonder if it was all that bad, or just e-drama. Then I remember the dude is an unrepentant petty dickhead.
Wow, I saw 30+ new comments in this thread and thought to myself I must have had a spelling mistake in one of the stat comments
I think the fact that he can’t stay away from making such comments about me tells more about him than about what I did there. As James writes below, I never entered any kind of agreement with AN or even hinted a promise or willingness to write on any schedule.
Having said that, and as ptbnl writes, I did write more than one post. In fact, if you go to ny of them, you will find this:
I knew my memory wasn’t off the mark on this one.
“We’ve always been at war with Croatia.”
doubleplustrue
does that include defense?
It looks like fangraphs hasn’t added any UZR numbers into their WAR calculation yet for 2015. It does include positional adjustment though. Lawrie actually gets an extra 0.1 runs for position adjustment, because Donaldson made one start at DH.
Donaldson is already up to 3 WAR.
Graveman and Lawrie still add up to nothing, Nolin had some so-so to OK short stints in the AAA. At least Barreto has been doing well.
The only good thing about this game was that the TV broadcast, in showing us the producer who nearly got hit with a foul ball, also gave us a nice view of the press box Wi-Fi login information taped to the wall behind him. So for the next time you’re at the Big A: username MLBPress, password MediaWiFi@cc#ss.
bookmarked
Wouldnt it stand to treason they may use a similar set up everywhere? That way media folks dont have to remember a dozen or so passwords? Someone should try in a stadium near you.
It’s possible. Though some of us who took a tour of the Coliseum press box during FanFest in 2014 obtained their WiFi password in much the same way, and it was different. The signal only worked in 216 or the West Side Club, and they changed the password midway through the year, but it was sweet while it lasted.
Nice catch!
And the only good thing about the latest AN mini-meta-drama was that it generated enough comments that I came back here and found this password, since I will be at the Big A in less than two weeks. I’m going to try it at the Coliseum too, because I think the MLBPress account shows up when I’m in 216.
ha!
I was going to log in to AN to recommend everyone’s smart remarks in that thread, but apparently I did a better job deleting my account than I realized.
Just realized that was the Angels first home win of the season :-(
