I have been trying to work all day, and totally unable to focus. Consequently, I’m still working (ish), planning to cook dinner soon, then resume working (ish), and watching (ish) the game.
I expected the A’s to miss the postseason altogether. As of yesterday morning, I expected them to lose the game last night. As of 22 (or so) hours ago, I expected them to get killed in three against the Angels if they managed to limp out of KC with a win. So… yeah. But fuck the Giants. If we don’t get to be happy and optimistic, neither do they.
Game on!
There's a wild thing in the woolshed and it's keeping me awake at night.
FUCK THE GIANTS
fart fart
fart fart fart
I have to watch the game alone, so I won’t be inflicting my glee on my poor ailing mother when bad things happen to the Giants.
Oh no! Curt Schilling is not able to be in the booth tonight! I’m so very, very sad over that.
I don’t know if I can watch this. I may need to find a bar without a TV and drink my sorrows away.
third inning, no score? it’s like these people don’t know how to play.
Nope…baseball is over until next spring.
I usually watch deciding games, but only a few innings otherwise. After investing a few hundred hours in the A’s, it’s just not worth it to follow a month-long tournament closely, once the A’s are gone. Please knock the Giants out tonight so I’m not tempted to get more involved.
Up by four runs in the wild card game…they’re screwed!
That’s how it works, right?
EXACTLY! I’ve heard.
NIGHT SHIFT!
Come on, fuck the giants. Please. I really don’t need to hear any “sucks about your A’s, but at least one Bay Area team made it through huh?” comments tomorrow
So it begins. I’ve already stopped talking to one Tinder girl for her patronizing Giants gloating
Turn out the liiiiiiights, the party’s over.
BLARG. I was away from TV & laptop for a while. Should have stayed that way. Fuck these fuckers. Who do they play next? GO TEAM WHO PLAYS GIANTS NEXT!!!
the Nat Gios
I can get behind rooting for the Gios.
I am probably going to the game Monday. If I do I am wearing my Oaks hat and I will pass off all remarks about the fact that it is the Nats colors by saying I support the bay baby!
FUCK
THE
GIANTS
Oh look. Another team’s ace actually pitched like an ace.
this is bullshit.
if the giants win the WS i quit baseball.
ball’s in your court, baseball gods.
yep
Thanks, and go As.
x3
Since 2000 the A’s are 0-7 in do-or-die games. Since 2012 the Giants are 7-0 in the same situations. Baseball is not fair sometimes.
Suffice to say, since 1990, most stats related to winning in the post-season are somewhat tilted against the A’s
wow
Oh, good. Giantsmania again in and around my San Francisco workplace.
Seriously. If this goes like the last two seasons (every FKing series won by the team I’m rooting against) I may give up.
this year, as was the case in 2010 and 2012 (mostly), they are clearly the inferior team in every series.
You don’t want a DET/LAA/SFG/StL final four?
With a LAA/SF WS.
Yeah, that’s the terrible part. I don’t begrudge the hardcore fans at all, the ones who follow them all season. But the ones who are suddenly wearing orange and sending out emails with Go Giants in the sig line…terrible.
At least hockey returns in less than a week.
I’m praying for a massive Ebola outbreak that closes down all travel and cancels the WS this year.
So the Orioles clubbed the Tigers’ bullpen into submission.
And Weaver picked off a Royals baserunner, throwing just 8 pitches (all strikes) in the first inning.
Every single thing that can happen in the playoffs will annoy me.
I am ok with the tigers being beaten
I am OK with it. But I know the A’s could not have done that, which makes me sad.
i think the A’s match up well with the angels royals tigers andare about even with the Orioles.
In the “who really cares what you think” department I thought we were a great fit for the O’s and Tigers, slegnA was a touch up and the Royals were our Kryptonite.
yay! baserunners
sigh
should have pulled vargas there
don’t talk that way about my alma mater mate. (i just found this out today.)
Someone had a finnegan’s wake sign.
is jim joyce umpiring?
That’s good.
whoa. they made shosha wear a uniform.
nice bunt. truly.
though it woulda been hilar if it fell for a hit behind the 3b-man.
nutty play.
bunting in front of trout seems dumb
WTF happened to street? all puffy and hungover looking.
and the way the bags under his eyes glisten…
angel fans booing hamilton
do angels fans hate hamilton? kind of quick to boo him. even as bad as those swings were.
The trouble with this game is simple. Every instinct I have says to root against slegnA, and I am. But then I realize that if the Royals make a deep run in the playoffs, we will have to watch that awful game forever.
Compliant Pig hits that little flare on Tuesday. Moustakas hits a home run just barely over the fence. Luck, inches…
That was a terrible call. Why wouldn’t the home plate umpire ask for help? He was really wrong. But the Royals win.
Wrong. It was perfectly called from the guy who was closest to it. And no amount of a logic is going to convince me otherwise.
Really good call.
Victory! Ned yost is a genius!
Amateurs.
the 92 millions 1. the 156 millions 0.
I am confused about how the Royals get to $92M with that roster. I went and looked them up on Cot’s and I’m still confused.
There’s nothing you can’t do with Raul Ibanez
there’s a game on? (one of those fake ones that look almost like baseball, but still.) i didn’t expect that. it’s still long morning shadows over here.
go 97 millions!
Right now? That’s ridiculous. Stop lying to us.
if it’s not a game, i’m having a nightmare where i’m forced to watch verlander’s repeating and meticulous mound exactitude over and over.
You’re saying his iCloud leak had video?
what??
I think GM’s suggestion is that Verlander’s meticulous mound manoeuvers are not confined to the baseball diamond.
got that. i wanted the URL.
edit: am assuming it’s kate… otherwise i’m good.
You dont want Justin, Prince, and Fister?
I think you can get there from here
and now that I look at the actual article, I see its been removed
and the ump is in on it.
which, by it, i mean a PERFECT GAME (in the 3rd).
ha! i’m good.
nice. markakis, laser, 2-0.
(under review)
cool.
not sure why baltimore is doing the atlanta chant though.
O’s O’s Ooooooohooooh O’s O’s O’s.
Giving their O’s face
They’re singing that white stripes song. Half the nba teams and many mlb teams do that now, which I find really irritating for some reason.
Jack White likes baseball so yeah…
sorry to bring out a harsh reality so early in the morning. (so skip this reply if you’re not ready for this.)
the reason could cognitive re-sonance. the nagging realization that just because one’s part of a mob doesn’t keep that particular mob from
mob mentalityan LCD taste in music.(i’m projecting. it’s how i feel when i sing those along. and high five.)
agreed
…and it’s gone.
looked away for a sec with 2 on for detroit. was it back to back to back? or 3-fer HR then 2-fer HR?
I, for one, don’t approve of this garish, Stepford Wives, off brand, non-union Mexican equivalent facsimile of baseball
they, for 5, approve of your comment.
O’s should go with Gausman instead of Chen next round, strike throwing LHP is a bad matchup against all these teams.
why does it matter? the bullpen pitches in the 8th
I think I’m half-heartedly pulling for the Orioles to win the pennant. There’s just something about Eric Hosmer’s face that bugs me too much to back the Royals against anyone but the Angels.
The Orioles have a certain 3B asshole though.
not this year
He’d still get a ring, though.
Maybe it’d give him a better grip the next time he throws his bat at someone
Which is why they’re choice #@
FKing Giants.
So the A’s coulda had Peavy and kept Cespedes?
did peavy have a NTC? He likely would waive for Bochy (manager in SD).
This is the trouble with those stud starters. The Dodgers may win today, but it won’t be because of Clayton Kershaw.
what the what?
nice job alex gordon
alex gordon steals on a pitchout
Hello, Ed. How are you? I miss you.
I am good. we miss you too
Great news everyone! Jack White is releasing a THREE DICS LP and DVD box of his 2014 Bonnaroo set! I know we all want on the waiting list.
In the face!
LIGHT WAVE!
just wondering, what’s the most extra inning games any team has had in a single post season? cause i think KC wants to shoot the moon this way.
I wish KC could’ve gotten it in this gear last week, and taken the division. We could’ve beaten the Tigers in a one-game playoff.
Its really frustrating to see. I know we are better than 3 of the AL teams. I don’t know about baltimore.
I think we are as good as them. Our pitchers would get them to swing and miss. That is whats tough with KC they are built to avoid what most pitching staffs do now. They dont crush it, but less K’s and b-e aggressive.
The Giants are going to win it all again and the A’s are just going to disappear, right? Wonder if SF felt like this in the 1970s.
Everything seems to be lining up for them again. Please don’t force me to deal with another parade in downtown San Francisco.
I didn’t feel much sympathy for the Nationals. They seemed to come emotionally unglued. The teams with the best records in their leagues are now 0-4 facing Wild Card play-in winners.
they still have to gt through kershaw and greinke twice.
Who will predictably fking choke.
Here’s how the entire National League is approaching the Gnats:
the old “wait for the guy who’s just about to sit down and suddenly pull the zimmerman out from under him” trick.
28-28 3rd quarter in the Cal game, still 2 minutes left. can’t remember ever seeing a defense so completely overmatched.
Inches away from incredible 63 point quarter.
And Cal ends the night in first place. So what if they were lucky?
buh-bye tigers.
FK ’em.
Tigers and A’s, the big winners of the trade deadline…
Meanwhile, C.J. Wilson doesn’t get out of the first inning.
LAWYERBALL
What is the opposite of Big Game James? Small Game James? Microscopic Game James?
Seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeereeeeee Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy
DAMMIT LOWRY HOW CAN YOU POP UP A 3-1 PITCH???
its ok. Moss picked him up
i’m not sure this game is headed to extras.
If things continue down this path, the Royals will have won as many times in the ALDS as the A’s have since 1990.
since 1982
these meaningless angels runs are not doing anybody any good. i still need a defense in my pocket when i fly south this friday, and the A’s scoring more runs against KC in one game than the angels are able to muster in 3 is what i’m currently banking on.
Well, you’ve got that. Plus, the slegnA didn’t even up a fight. And Trout couldn’t hit .100, so he’s obviously a postseason choke job artist until he proves otherwise.
And Scoiscia started C.J. Wilson in an elimination game on the road.
I’m just trying to give you material here. I’m not comforted by any of this myself.
The A’s-Royals game was classic baseball theater. The Royals-slegnA series an old-fashioned beatdown by a superior team.
A lot of good all those regular season wins did them.
but i thought he was primed!
and yes, those are all good, entre nous. but you have to remember i’ll be talking to angel fans… i have to keep it simple and use single digit numbers.
So the $17 million Josh Hamilton made this year, jumping to $25 million next year, is too large a number? Or js it just irrelevant to slegnA fans?
How about this? Number of titles or pennants won by slegnA under Arte Moreno: Zero.
It’s easy to lose one road game. It’s harder to get swept in a series, two of which were at home.
I would stick with C.J. Wilson. If I’m a slegnA fan, that would irk me. Number one, that Scioscia started him, and number two, that he had so little confidence in his choice that Wilson was yanked almost immediately.
i tried the money angle with these particular guys during the vernon wells thing. they were like, so? that doesn’t limit the payroll, it just shows we can spend as much as we like if we want to get someone.
still, can’t believe the yankees let them off the hook…
—
keep in mind i’m not looking to come out swinging though. i just need a defense in case they do. that’s why comparing runs scored over games played seems like the right move. stabbing at their pieces and decisions doesn’t do me any good. saying the angels didn’t do as well as the A’s did (in a skewed small sample) is a little better.
then they’ll probably divert to in-season, and say that the downfall of the A’s was obviously the cespedes trade. at which point i plan to bore them to death with tales of a 3-headed catching monster becoming 1.5-headed and sore-backed, a pandemic of head and neck injuries, and that if there’s a trade to be blamed it’s the one that didn’t happen with the MI. that should buy me enough time to get back to the airport on time.
The A’s and slegnA won an equal number of postseason games. slegnA had more tries, and thus are bigger failures.
slegnA lost one outstanding starting pitcher. The other injured guy returned and pitched well, so that’s no excuse. Their bullpen was healthy and deep after the trades. Nothing wrong with the rest of the lineup, including the MVP who managed one hit.
The A’s had one healthy AND productive player left by the end of the season, plus a banged-up third baseman. Everyone else was injured. The A’s had no chance. And they still almost beat the Royals, unlike slegnA, which lost three consecutive games and was blown out in the last one. The A’s couldn’t have done worse than slegnA.
slegnA gets swept a lot in playoff series. The A’s may lose heartbreakers, but at least they are competitive.
awesome. i’m making a crib sheet with this and pinning it to the inside of my suit, in case i get too drunk to remember it all toward the end of the wedding.
“Here..read this and go FK yourself and your stoopid lightthundermokeywaveralleystick…I’m gonna throw up.”
pretty close. but actually, i don’t barf from drinking (anymore), so if i were in fact nauseous, it’d be from the conversation itself, which would lead me to begin that statement with the “i’m gonna throw up” and then continue with the rest.
“I’m gonna throw up. Here… read this and go FK yourself and your stoopid lightthundermokeywaveralleystick…â€
a world of difference, i think.
including the implication that i don’t actually have to go anywhere to puke, leaving me the freedom to stay and continue with “fishead-brero teamcolorchanging don’tknowwhatcityyoulivein orcountyforthatmatter disneyfiedwaterfeatureballparkusingnorcalwaterinadrought everystrikecomplaining ratinfestedohlookbeachball!…”
I forgot about the rats! And you should include at least 2 specific cites for them. Make it like Buena Park and Fullerton.
Who on the A’s was still healthy and productive at the end of the season? Reddick maybe?
That would be my guess.
speaking of impotent, so, from the marketing perspective, why do we think the lady in the viagra ad has a british (correct me if i’m wrong about nationality) accent? what’s the narrative here for the US baseball viewer?
As a US baseball viewer, that commercial just doesn’t make any sense to me.
Goodnight, slegnA. They must be pissed we couldn’t put away the Royals.
buh-bye angholes!! that makes my day.
They just announced the time of tomorrow’s Giants game…2 PM. I’m glad because it screws up some of the fans’ plans, but yuck, not only do I have to drive in through that traffic, I’ll have a newsroom full of people watching the damned thing around me while I’m trying to work.
I don’t care about their plans (although baseball’s lack of consideration about actual fans trying to make arrangements to attend the actual game is pretty outrageous). I care about mine. This means BART will be packed with Giants fans during the evening commute.
And unfortunately they might have something to celebrate, too.
No they don’t. Not at all. Nothing to celebrate at all.
Giants fans seem to celebrate their innate superiority to everyone else regardless of game outcomes.
And a 6 PM game 4 if it’s needed tomorrow
The only interest I have left in the playoffs is seeing the Giants lose, so the way things are going there is extremely worrisome. At least the two AL series worked out the way I preferred given the participants I guess
I can root for the AL without reserve. Even though I’m not watching. The NL, only the Nats are somewhat rootable and they’re toast. And they’ll be dead to me if they lose again.
Sometimes I think the problem with MLB is that they have zero rootable teams.
The A’s and Royals are the closest, but the A’s fail painfully and the Royals are owned by WalMart, so that cancels them out too.
I’m just hoping for this evening’s MLB.com headline to be “Bum No Match For Fister’s Pounding”.
Bravo
If my leather family had a newsletter, I’d have to crib that from ya!
I really hope some of the folks you saw wearing Fister jerseys at Folsom Street showed up for the game, to confuse the hell out of the national press corps if nothing else.
That would be awesome. Alas, I’m 0-3 lifetime in getting gay men wearing Fister shirseys to talk baseball with me.
nicely done. looks like safe, or at least subdued, BART rides home for all of you.
Possibly because you can’t read directions? (Although MLB has the email and phone number of anyone who bought tickets through them and from StubHub, and they’ve known since September 25 that “Home Game 3” for the Wild Card team wouldn’t happen…)
a game almost guaranteed not to be played since early september
Also, its relatively hard and expensive to buy giants playoff tickets. One would think that would necessitate a level of knowledge on thet part of the ticket buyer.
I wonder how many people showed up for the noon start time.
I saw about five other people complaining on Twitter…those were just the ones who put “Home Game 3” in their tweets.
It isnt hard to buy them, just an element of luck. My friend had to get in some lottery he said but he got it and bought them with 0 hitch. Now expensive yes. His SRO seats where we could not see any action without constantly walking up and down aisles were more than my tix for 318 would have been. We did have a great view of the Oakland coast line by turning around. Will admit I lost it around the 6th inning or so looking over there and seeing about where I real game should have been going on.
i guess the answer is yes.
its hard for me to root for the dodgers
i don’t know what you could possibly have against the team that outspent the yankees by the GDP of st helena, ascension and tristan da cunha.
You just don’t have the right motivation.
I haven’t watched an inning of any of these series and haven’t had any desire too. I might make an exception for Gio tonight.
Wow. Mattingly is dumb. Leaving Puig in the bench in an elimination game is crazy.
And playing Ethier in centerfield! This is nuts.
the moves this post season are baffling. Yost fits right in
I haven’t been paying attention to any Yost moves since the recent unpleasantness, but I have a hard time believing anything he’s done can match this for idiocy. Puig kills righthanded pitching and he is at least competent in centerfield. The only way this move is justified is if he has a secret injury (apparently not) or he straight up told Mattingly “I hate the Dodgers, and I will try to lose this game.”
yost did well in anaheim
except the whole, not pitching holland in extras until they had the lead
Managers are obsolete.
There should be a new position created called Assistant GM in charge of Field Management. They’ll sit in the dugout in slick suits, trying to look like Connie Mack.
Has anyone heard from FSU? I dont think I have seen him since the recent unpleasantness (totally stealing that for the next month or so GM).
Can’t really blame Matt Kemp here. The gameday .gif is hilarious.
I like the acknowledgement and the poking at that bear. It leads to one place: Automated strike calling and A’s awesomeness.
Neshek looking good.
And Clayton Kershaw is clearly garbage and the Dodgers should get rid of him at a fire sale price, say straight up for Abad.
Spelled Callaspo wrong.
Thanks, and go As.
As Yoenessa would say: “boff ah dem”
Kawakami is suggesting Puig could be traded (using evidence of his benching). If it came from a reliable source at all, I would be all over it. But….Kawakami.
It is Coletti though. Na, jk, Mattingley will be fired.
Please.
Beckett retired. Trade them Shark.
Thanks, and go As.
Nah, I’d rather keep him. They can have Kaz.
I’m OK with that.
Thanks, and go As.
WANT
Ninth inning, season on the line, Puig pinch runs while the extremely scraggly Justin Turner pinch hits. Uh.
Shockingly it didn’t work out.
I wonder if Mattingly gets fired over this.
If he doesn’t, Marcellus Wallace needs to revoke Magic Johnson’s LA privileges.
as kenly jansen watched the game from the bullpen. having faced 3 batters
Ugh, Lackey drinky face.
Not sure what this means, but I am pretty sure bed is behind it
Lucky ass Giants.
Bryce Harper, man.
wow. where is mike morse for defensive replacement?
jerry! jerry! jerry!
ugh.
who IS this asshole trying to take out the guy covering the plate??
BUNTS! I LOVE BASEBALL!
