Gomes can’t play defense. That’s really all you need to know.
I missed the first play too, but apparently Jonny Gomes still sucks.
Gomes badly tracked it, missed it. Had it bounce up the wall. When it came down, he bumbled it. Would have been a double, but went to third. Shallow fly to center that wouldn’t have gotten him to third even with Coco throwing, easy to score from third.
so it was a gomes error that allowed the run to score. cool.
I think the Donaldson homer was the hardest hit by an A at the Coliseum since Cespedes’s first Oakland homer.
The bat flip is up there too.
I was there for Cespedes’. That was some scary shit. Thought he was going to be special.
That’s the biggest ball I’ve seen in person.
He may yet be.
Redemption, Jonny?
Cool, cool.
Gomes gets the immediate chance to make everyone forget the top of the 1st.
A three run home run would do that.
Not gonna complain about a walk though.
not at all
Especially w/ CJ.
I can haz slam plz?
its the mound Christopher John. Not you.
WALK! [Cheers]
Lawyerball for the tie
nice to postulate about a battery of wilson and pierzinski with manny machado at third, vince. yes. we would be booing
And Wilson is not even the worst pitcher they’ll have to start in the playoffs…
Fuck you jed
Jed is seriously fucking pissing me off. What kind of shit swing was that?
Ball four and double play ball just waiting to happen. Why swing at that unless you have two strikes?
He needs to be hitting ninth.
fail
dare I say maximum lawyerball?
Makes Lowrie AB that much worse.
Delightful.
Get
a brainwarmed up, Morin.Go USA!
Is it too soon to remove Gomes for a defensive replacement?
new guy
Hahahaha, eat shit Wilson.
Go FK yourself, CJ.
It’d be so fking sweet if we can do this to him in the ALDS…
You’re assuming he even pitches in the ALDS.
They don’t have a choice.
Sure they do. They don’t have any GOOD choices. But then he isn’t exactly a good choice either.
FK yeah, Soto!
4th time is a charm (stupid tablet…)
This time of year is for hot streaks.
Soto is the every day Catcher.
Ed is the every day GT creator.
wait. no Callaspo? Gloy day. Glory day!
We can still PH him later. Not to worry.
Defensive replacement.
Pinch Runner
I thought about starting the thread. But felt it needed a lawyers touch. I was right.
Bear down beach chess. Have we ever given Shark a 3 run lead this early?
accrding to vince this is more runs than his last 4 starts combined.
More runs than the entirety of what the A’s scored in the last series against the slegnA.
How bout 5?
FREESE!!!!!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
You could totally see that one coming too. Just the way he wasn’t looking at first to prep that throw.
He didn’t look right from the moment he fielded the ball.
Yep.
Hmm.. This is going well.
Omg let’s do this every game!!!
I was kind of hoping Pujols would cramp up on the run to first and not make it.
I wasn’t paying attention, didn’t realize Shoemaker was hurt. He’s kind of a pivotal pitcher for the slegnA, I’d say.
he has the same thing doolittle had. he is not pitching during the regular year again.
Back for the postseason?
no se. they don’t say
The team is hoping, per an LA Times report. Sounds like it might be a stretch.
Thankee.
They are kind of screwed if he can’t go in the playoffs.
If they want to throw at Aybar at some point tonight, I am totally cool with it.
I want him to drop a bunt down, then have Soto drill him right between the scapulae.
I am ok with him playing a little against the angels. he’s their rosales
Pitch Callapso for that.
SHUT DOWN INNING!!!!
well this seems pleasant enough.
I don’t know if there was a single strike in that called K against Gomes. Let’s not Niner this and let off the gas.
I don’t understand this comment. when do we step on the clutch?
Maybe that’s why we stalled out for so long. Kept trying to step on the clutch. It’s all Vince’s fault!
gah!! RTTAV
That’s somewhere between playing the game the right away and finding one’s confidence.
It’s right there next to the lunch pail they bring every day. It’s the first lunch pail to get there and the last one to leave.
Thanks, and go As.
unless stepping on the clutch, of course.
Then again, Trout’s K was awful too. Someone wants to go home early.
I think you meant Game 156, the Big Payback.
Fuld catches that one. Cespedes drops it, then throws Beckham out at 3rd.

depends what you see.
the sign by the welder says “if you want to see, do not look”
Did I blow your mind?
Try to cross your eyes, but still look right at it.
Nah man, you have to look PAST the picture.
I spent a year picking up those damned 3-d dot pictures off the floor when kids who never would have bought them came and stared for hours.
go look at my FB profile banner.
or, here.
mmmm, waffles
a roommate in college had one. 9 months, never saw the statue of liberty.
Same here. Probably framed 2-300 of them, never saw a thing. Probabky should have got stoned and tried.
So why do we hate Calhoun specifically again?
He’s on the other team, which is enough for me.
too chesty
He’s the RF. Wow, they must have a mic in RF or something because they are way louder than normal. The Stephen Vogt chant was coming in loud and very clear.
That would be a very smart PR move (until they catch some of the words they yell on TV), so it can’t be intentional.
There isn’t a mic that I can see, but I’ve had that impression too on some broadcasts.
Last night’s Young Fosse photo blowup was excellent, by the way.
I know the woman who had it last night! She found it at the estate sale of a local photographer, I think there were several other A’s players as well.
Did she buy them all, or what? For those who missed it:
Close-up:
was it a photographer? i thought it was just a huge fan family. it was the parents of this girl. but perhaps photographer would explain the several copies of some images they had.
mrs AV runs estate sales for a living. middle of the day one day, i get a text with a pic of a sporting news cover, asking, is this the famous mustache? she was trying to price stuff and i get called on for help on records and sports…
i reply, that’s the mustache gang. she goes, huh? a while later she texts again, ooooooooh, now i get it, with a pic of this book. and later i get another text, do you know who this is? it was bert campaneris. now i’m, WHAT ELSE IS THERE??
there were a bunch of portraits and official memorabilia. that’s alright by me but i don’t usually covet what she can sell. i focus on the personal stuff that ends up in the trash. the two daughters had those diaries, a bunch of other hand written stuff, and they belonged to several fan clubs, so there were stuffed envelopes of mimeo’d letters, bunch of stuff from particular A’s players, the raiders and seals fan clubs… etc. but the big ticket items were definitely the portraits.
your friend said she went on friday, saw all the stuff, and kept going back to wait out the price drop. glad she took some home with her.
ok, mrs AV confirms it was a photographer. doesn’t think it was an official A’s field photographer, but he did studio portraits for A’s and warriors.
additionally, she still has a couple HAND TINTED BERTS for sale (showing you B/W only, tinted ones are same shot). not rock bottom prices or nothing. she didn’t sell them that sunday because it’s the kind of thing that pays off to hang on to till the right buyer comes along. let me know if innarested and all that…
while we’re at it, if y’all have seen that billyball snapback trucker hat i wear, i have 3 extras, mint. (as opposed to my dirty faded thrashed one. that’s just how i roll.)
1 per household, no charge, just asking for the promise that you’ll actually wear it once or twice instead of stuffing it in the closet till it’s time to hold your estate sale.
Well, we couldn’t wear it around you. that’d be weird
of course not. but any 3 of you could wear them together when i’m not around!
Wow-Having a name from the BillyBall era I think makes it mandatory that I raise my hand. But I would insist on at least getting you a drink or something good food wise in exchange.
I plan on being back up in the Bay Area in early Oct. Perhaps we can make exchange arrangements then?
sounds great. consider your head shaded by the finest of nylon meshes.
Mustache Gang is a fantastic book, required reading for anyone who wants to acquaint themselves with the Swingin A’s of the early 70’s.
They might be using a parabolic mic (like they do with football to pick up some of the ambiance).
Yeah. I had to take one of those through airport security once. Not too fun, especially considering that a) it had a grip that looked like a handgun and b) I was taking it from LA to SF for a colleague, and I hadn’t actually opened the case up to look at the thing, so when they pulled me out of line to ask about it I said “Well, someone else gave it to me to deliver to someone else….” Fortunately it was in the pre-9/11 days so I lived to tell the tale.
Oh man. I can only imagine how that would have gone today.
My cousin’s taser made it through security a few months ago.
He said “FK Oakland” when they clinched.
Did he really? Wow, how did I miss that?
I haven’t found a citation for it (and it’s hard to search, since if it had been reported it wouldn’t have been reported with those words). That’s what someone told me, they might have seen him mouth it on TV? Subsequently, I found references to Calhoun complaining to Anaheim security about the loud A’s fans in right field at the games there last month. Some were actually thrown out. That’s most likely why.
I tried searching for “shithead team has shithead player” but nothing came up
I saw something where it looked like he said for our fans to get the FK out of their stadium. But on the work computer so trying to avoid too much bad language.
what are the things that are facts? that we knew he had stuff? [counts on fingers] that’s… only one thing though. and it’s not really a fact. or, some of us knew, some may have suspected, and some had no idea at all…
did anybody get that on tape? this may require a few months of forensic linguistics to get to the bottom of.
Shark eats Trout!
Siddown, Trout!
How nice would have been to get Trout instead of Green? We’d probably be going for a three-peat right now…
Or Trout would’ve gotten injured, stalled out in the upper minors, and/or joined the priesthood.
I’m not sure we get Cespedes if we had Trout. And hence, he would have folded mentally.
Traded for Lester.
Ok, I know it was just one inning. I know if may speak more of CJ and his instability than it does of us. I know we could go back tomorrow. Dont rain on my parade.
This was not a reply-whatevs…
World Series, right?
How would we get Callaspo then.
gp
Trout for Callaspo duh.
can we score in at least 2 innings?
” 3-2. its a change up and punto knew it.”
I don’t think he did vince
This is a loooooong game.
Sam fuld having the most rbi on the month says more about the a’s than it does about sam fuld vince.
Uh, ma’am, you really shouldn’t go for a foul ball in a scrum while holding a baby.
Fourth time the A’s have knocked a pitcher out in the first inning this year – Cosart, Richards, Young, Wilson.
So Donaldson walked to load the bases and Moss swung at 3 pitches out of the zone to K.
Nice.
Thanks, and go As.
he needs to remember he is brandon moss
Can’t stop watching this Altuve swing.
Whoa, hypnotizing.
wow
I’m not sure what’s best:
a) He completely leaves his feet.
b) He manages to get on top of it.
c) It almost hits the catcher in the nuts.
d) All of the above.
d) his back foot lands where his front foot started.
e) all of the above
He takes his hit and runs seriously
was there a hit and run on or something?
Has to be
No. Just no. do not let them score after that. double play
Request granted.
thank you
Ray dropping knowledge right now; if you pitch longer in the game it means other pitchers will pitch less.
can you dumb that down a little?
#ShootySignal
He was clearly not taking into account the fact that when you pitch longer in the game, the game then goes to many extra innings.
come on. score a damned run
I’m ok with them scoring in only one inning per game. But it has be 6 runs all the time.
I’m fairly certain that sharks do not eat trout.
youtube says otherwise.
Steelhead trout do the river-to-ocean thing like salmon, I’m sure sharks eat them sometimes.
Also, sea-run cutthroat trout.
Kazmir and Gray may be getting worse, but Samardzija’s getting better.
Man that Freese throw was bad.
The idea of Punto diving into first in Little League makes me happy.
NOT A CRITICISM:
Vince said Sonny gray’s era is “better than 5” over the past x games.
Is that the right was to say it? is it under 5? over 5?
just made me go hmmmm
He always uses “better than” to mean “more than.” It bugs the shit out of me. I think he thinks it’s cute.
i don’t mind “better than” when more is better. this case makes no sense.
Right. He obviously heard someone use it when it was appropriate, and then he decided to use it for everything.
the reality is, i can barely listen to A’s broadcasts anymore. i get an inning in, two maybe, of TV or vince before i turn the sound down for the rest of the way. just moronic. and they’re driving KK’s level down, is the sad thing.
LongTimeFan and skigurl both wear headsets to listen to the radio at the game, and when I sit next to them as I did this weekend, I hear a continual stream of muttered “Shut up, Vince”.
heh
In this case batter than means less than, which means better than. The internal Vincean Logic is sound.
Cotroneo making it thought provoking.
-insert BFN diatribe about how Vince is using language to descibe the nothingness of being. And screw Punto.
Oh man, I could go for one of those. They’re fun.
Hey look! ball in dirt and no one advanced.
Nice
sounds like josh made another good play
Donaldson’s play just had Samardzija grinning on his way to the dugout.
Scioscia just wants to make this game longer
So technically the slegnA bullpen is shutting us down in two consecutive starts.
There goes that.
oh good. Lowrie is up
Add on, mothersuckers.
You asked. They answered.
“Lowrie beats it out despite
[medicine ball he carried]stretch by pujols”Have they announced attendance?
KK said about 25,000. need 50,000 to make 2 million.
So does LW buy enough tix to get us to 2 million?
Nah. Still, a couple towel/blanket giveaways would do the job.
Little Mundy’s chorus is singing the anthem tomorrow night. That should be enough of a draw to put it over the top.
really? Cool. I’ll be in fk seats. 124 I think
Nice.
do you have the front row tickets?
I wish! We’re in the family section. 108 I think.
I have noticed the ushers not sweating the parents that come down the 117 aisle to take pictures.
FYI
Good looking out.
I did this, along with half a dozen other dads. Worked great.
Great for a Monday night.
I did some checking with the pick your seat tool.
I expect about about 20K tomorrow. Need a sell out wednesday I think to make it.
Needs to be close to 30k tomorrow night. Wednesday is a day game.
Final game and possibly the playoff clincher are positives.
Wed afternoon is a big negative. Need to see some dynamic deals for $2 seats
It did not look like 25K actual people were there, though. Still, if they had the tickets and didn’t show up it still counts, as the Giants would be the first to assure us.
Thats why I think in the end we will hit the #. We are too close for a Lew or someone to not pull out the checkbook and say “give me 1000 tixs in the $2 section” on Wednesday afternoon.
Not that it matters much, but worth noting whatever attendance total the A’s get this year will be on only 80 home dates, due to the doubleheader rain makeup date.
Also, not sure Lew would feel inclined to spend money to make the team hit a notable 2 million attendance mark. Does not quite fit with other parts of his narrative.
Also, there are no $2 tickets still available, cheapest is $18 Plaza OF.
BTW, apparently tickets are going very fast for tonight. Best not to leave to a last-minute walkup.
scrolling over the map in the select your seat, looks like about 2000 plaza outfield ($12), a couple hundred bleachers, and maybe 2000 other plaza. no mt davis.
I expect 30K now.
EDIT: sorry there are mt davis seats, not many though
I’m always sorry there are Mt Davis seats.
I think it matters a bunch because we would clear the mark easy with that 81st date put in.
And yeah I almost wanted to say something in the beginning about let’s leave the “bad A’s marketing Lew hates Oakland” and all other narratives out of it. You are of course spot on with the narrative, but I also can see that changing if he is actually looking at Oakland now, and also because I think there is some vanity in hitting that mark. And maybe a little “see, we can still hit a big # with the tarps on if you people show up” counternarrative.
And they have recently been doing dynamic pricing last minute. That is how I think it would work. Like tomorrow morning at 8am “come out one last time for 1 last dollar!” motivates folks to come out and if they are close enough the remaining tixs get bought on the cheap to hit the target.
I suspect they’ll hit the 30k mark tonight which makes another 21k tomorrow very doable to reach 2M.
I believe in vogt (my god that was a bad call by vince)
the bases loaded hit that turns it around!
Good stuff, Stephen!
Hey, more runs!
Apparently someone called AAA over the weekend and they’re helping put some new wheels on the bus.
Do they go round and round?
Not yet. Still putting them on.
I called AAA today. cost me a trip to tonights game
so 2 infield hits?
Donaldson was not getting trout
outs please
Well, good thing we added on in the 7th.
I don’t think we get scibner if we didn’t add on
Im shocked Shark came out after last time. I would have expected him to chew BoMel a bit to stay in for the 8th.
Nah. Need to keep him fresh.
I expected him 6-1, not 8-1
Guys, I have a very good feeling about this postseason
For the A’s?
Heh, yeah. They’ll limp into it, win the WC game and then just feel so liberated by the new life feeling that they will obliterate everything on their way
once moss remembers hrs. and dunn too
1. If all these theories about the team being so mental are true, getting warm and getting in the playoffs will totally reset them to the juggarnaut.
2. We have flipped the script totally from the last 2 years. Logically that means playoffs flip too.
I don’t know about any of that. But there are dozens of stories about big league teams suffering complete collapses. There aren’t any I know about teams just barely pulling out of the usually-fatal nose dive to go on to soar to the World Championship. That’d be a helluva story.
Is it Brad Pitt worthy? I say yes. (I’m already writing our the spec script…)
Absolutely. That’s in the Hollywoodesque style.
First act: hubris
Second act: obstacles
Third act: redemption
Cespedes leaving the locker room to the Walking Away song from the Incredible Hulk.
06 tigers came close.
they came within soggy grounds of teh championship
This one would be like Ralph Branca striking out Bobby Thomson and Willie Mays, and then Brooklyn going on to knock off the Yankees in the World Series.
Mike Torrez getting Bucky Dent to hit a fly ball to right field and the 78 Sox charging to the WS title.
The 1995 Angels beating Randy Johnson and…nope.
2000 Yankees?
They were very bad the last two weeks of the season, but that was only after they had virtually locked up the division. I don’t remember feeling like there was a chance the Red Sox would run them down.
2006 Cards then?
That’s a good one. That was very late collapse, too, leaving them no time to “get hot” before the playoffs started.
I’m still kind of pissed they won that one. We would have killed them.
Not just a helluva story. It would be positively historic.
In 1987 the media narrative in September was “The Twins aren’t going to make it to the postseason, but they’re plucky little underdogs and giving their fans a good run”. Then it was “The Twins fluked their way in, but they’ll fold up quickly”. Then it was “No team in the history of MLB has ever lost all three Series games on the road and then come back to win! Unpossible! Nevar happen!”. And then it was “Oh, well, they cheated by turning on the fans in the Metrodome, etc.”
And then in 1991 it was exactly the same thing, up until Game 6 when it was “No team in the history of MLB has ever lost all three Series games on the road and then come back to win EXCEPT the Twins in 1987 and it beggars belief that the same thing could possibly happen again!”. And then it was “Oh, well, MLB forgot to specify that postseason games couldn’t be played in the Metrodome any more because they cheat, and also Kent Hrbek, da da da da da da.”
You’ve been looking into the same crystal ball I have, eh?
Good.
I would like moss to hit the ball harder
If Melvin is planning to use Cook, the A’s need more runs as wildness insurance.
wait. what the?
I would prefer Doo sit this one out, if at all possible.
Also, nice camera work, CSNCA.
I am unhappy Melvin feels it necessary to get Doolittle up.
. wants to hide under second right now.
I prefer the theory that Fuld just forget there was a runner on base, as opposed to being cocky and bad
One more hit and the tying run comes to the plate.
Why isnt Parrino in?
never in doubt
Nice win BITCHES!
OK, everybody relax.
it’s a celebration!
Ballgame! That went well :)
It was all a part of a greater plan to get Street to stretch and warm-up, thus rendering him unavailable for the nexth month
How many 40-man roster relievers do LAAA have up? Because they used like 12 of them tonight.
13 according to KK.
Which is funny because Scioscia is one of the most biggest whiner about roster expansion and the need to “designate” 25-28 for availability in any one game
Which is actually the rule change I would like to see. Although agreeing with Scioscia on anything may be the new low point of my life.
right?
The only way I’d accept that is if instead of opening the 40 man roster on September 1st, they simply remove the 10 day wait period to bring guys up and down. That way the back end of the roster would be fungible but it wouldn’t be so loose that they just remove the previous night’s starter who would be unavailable anyway. And options would still count even if they’re not being optioned to a minor league team. I’d also consider a shorter DL length, like 5 or 7 days including the traditional retroactive stuff.
I like Samardzija. That is all.
wow. Flannery just made a dumber move than Gallego.
belt at second someone at first one out arias on deck, then blanco. League pitching in the 11th
Crawford with a groundball single to center, Puig throws out belt by plenty.
That game should go for 100 innings. Listening to Scully relaxes me while I work
I wonder what Scully would say about Crisp.
Also, although I am all for the Fuck the Giants movement, if you intentionally walk Brandon Crawford, he of the lifetime .668 OPS, to get to Andrew Susac, I hope you fucking lose.
How perfect that the A’s scored 6 runs on Wilson in the first inning, by the power of … two singles.
I’m not one to harbor grudges. And clearly nothing matters at all right now except pure simple Wins. That said, damn, it sure felt good to see CJ fail in excruciating fashion tonight. Really good.
So, so good – thank you for gifting me that.
I really want a copy of Football Manager, just so I can manage the Quakes and fix stuff.
Namely, let Djalo walk because he’s made of glass, don’t sell Morrow and Beitashour for allocation money, and give Mix Diskeruud the MLS equivalent of a blank check to be the CAM.
Thanks, and go As.
Possible A’s pitching opponents if they make the play-in game:
Royals – Shields or Vargas
Tigers – Scherzer or Verlander (Price isn’t looking like a realistic option unless Detroit can skip him on Sunday)
Mariners – not really sure, doesn’t look like it can be Felix
The possibility that the Royals and Tigers might need a playoff for the division on Monday might mess things up for those teams, although it probably wouldn’t affect the A’s much. They would probably get Shields or Scherzer.
If the A’s need to play Monday, that would be a problem. They could use Lester, and should if it comes to that, but that creates problems that I hope will be avoided even if the A’s win on Monday.
The Mariners without Felix, facing a left-handed Lester would be their best play-in opponents on Tuesday, although that possibility is looking increasingly unlikely as of this morning. Instead, they’re just going to have to tough it out against Scherzer or Shields. Detroit’s bullpen weaknesses would be protected because the Tigers could bring in Verlander and Price.
But in the meantime, the A’s have to just keep winning.
A tie for the AL Central/2nd wildcard would be perfect. No Scherzer/Shields. Play @OAK against the Royals #2? Yes please.
I know it is stupid, but I think I would prefer Shields to Vargas.
Coco has had to change his stance and swing because of his neck.
i thought he didn’t quite look like there was a plaster gargoyle perched on his shoulder anymore.
Billy better pass on the message.
Thanks, and go As.
Pfft. I’m a bigger fan than that kid. I’ve got to be at LEAST 3 time bigger. Wait, he’s a 11. Okay, maybe I’m only twice as big. #SizeMatters
Kawasaki batting 5th.
Watch the video in the comments.
MONKEYS NEVER CRAMP
And they score 10 runs against Felix with him 5th. Baseball!
Heh heh. Doolittle seems like a genuinely funny guy.
his g friend is a comedy writer or something
Well at least we’re not being no hit.
Jerome Williams, Hector Santiago and Pepe Le Pew are definitely guys a team will tip its cap to.
Ack, my streak of not DoctorK’ing ends at 442 games.
Heh. Mine too.
