How long were you there for? What part of the Bay are you moving back to? Where will we visualize you posting from, if not from a sign shop out by the Everglades?
He’s getting paid more or less according to his CHONE projection (14 starts, 4.09 ERA.)or his 2008-2009 average. Mediocre teams need upside much more than safe averageness. Starting pitching was a weakness. Excellent trade value if he’s healthy at the deadline. Will make the games much more fun to watch. Impossible not to like this move.
Ditto. After watching starts by guys named Reineke, Mortonson, and Edgar Gonzalez last year, getting a commodity of known quality for at least some of the season sounds pretty good.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
Even if Duke sucks, I’d rather watch him get shelled than Reineke. And I don’t want to see him in a Boston uni. Scutaro in Fenway and Swisher yukking it up in NY is already really tough on me.
I’m not commenting on the money (or disliking the move). I’m just saying that it’s a lot of joy for a guy who has a lot of flaws, might not help us at all very much, and can’t play on the left side of the infield.
"There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want"
But the move costs the A’s nothing long term, it shouldn’t prevent them from continuing to look at other mid-tier moves this offseason and if Duke can pitch in 2010 he fills a need in Oakland. If Duke can’t go then the A’s have the depth to go in another direction.
The A’s (probably) needed to add a vet arm but they didn’t need someone who’d want a long term deal. Of the guys who’d be looking at accepting a 1 year deal Duke was the sentimental choice for me.
As you (NM) would say, “This.” Also, your point reminds me of how much I hated the Harden trade at the time. For much of the first months of 2008, Harden and Duke were the A’s two most watchable (and outstanding) players–they kept the team on the radar. I think Duke hit the DL around the same time that Harden got traded, a disasterous combo.
The base salary is $2 million, but Duchscherer could earn as much as $5.5 million with incentives, should he reach benchmarks of 30 starts and 200 innings.
Well… depression is a recurring problem right? I mean, I like Duke, feel for him, etc. but I can understand why teams with $$$ don’t want to commit to him as one of their 5 starters. And he is getting paid a lot for a #6.
Of course, this is less a problem for us since we have ~10 guys who are plausible, and only 2-3 who are sure things, but that’s a rare situation.

NORAD tells me that Santa reaches Baghdad in two minutes, presumably to rain gifts on crusader and infidel alike. Since I only have a year or two left before my kids stop believing, I’m milking this shit for all it’s worth.

shit, he’d outhit Kendall. He’s only, what, 52? OBP DEFINITELY higher. I bet Rickey could come in right now and get…what .380, OBP? What say you, numbers junkies?
Merry Christmas to me! Awesome. My love of this deal has nothing to do with value or projections. It’s all about rooting for Duke to pitch for the A’s again. I love the guy as a player and am excited to watch him pitch, provided he’s healthy.

Okay, I’m gonna drift into sentimentality for a minute here, so beware.
I love this blog. I love that you guys are so awesomely accepting of me. I love that we can disagree with each other on here and not get too awfully pissed off at one another. I do think we are kind of what was lost on **. In short, I love you guys.
There are, in reality, about three things out of fifty that have truly changed my life. The rest I either curmudgeonly refuse to participate in or am damn certain they were around long before the end of the last decade. Simply because some douche in Washington or NYC steadfastly refused to join the 21st Century with us cool kids in CA…well, maybe I’m just a bitter prick.
Well, I’m definitely a bitter prick, but…read the story and let me know.

DOGGIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!
The perfect remedy for my S.A.D.
you could move here. I’ll do a straight trade. You’d have to learn how to make signs and talk about the Gators and the Bucs.
350 days of fucking sunshine! And white sand beaches!
You know, you didn’t have to be a rocket scientist to realize this was a poor fit–me and here.
How long were you there for? What part of the Bay are you moving back to? Where will we visualize you posting from, if not from a sign shop out by the Everglades?
Shooing the alligators away?
Prolly North Bay. I’d like to be a city mouse, though…
You been to college? We only takes yeggs what’s been to college.
I won’t give you the high hat, if that’s a concern.
I love Novato
We do all remember this guy has Harden-esque problems with actually pitching, right?

Yeah, especially the “more fun to watch” part. I’m a big Duke fan.

jeez, who crapped in your stocking?
Can’t we just have something we like for once ;)
Fuck yeah!
NM, he sees you when you’re sleeping, he knows when you’re awake!
Behave or it’s coal for you!
Fair enough. I’m just being crotchety.
That was my first reaction, but hey, let’s pretend there’s a big red bow tied around him and he’s sitting in the driveway. I’ll take it.
Yep.

So… happiness.
For the contract Duke signed, I’d welcome Harden back.
I think I’d welcome him back for the contract he signed in Tejas.
As you (NM) would say, “This.” Also, your point reminds me of how much I hated the Harden trade at the time. LOL BYG URB
Heh.
Hee hee. One wonders if Urban will ever realize that what he considers inside knowledge is often actually being an unwitting patsy.
Slusser:
Even better.
Thanks for the link.
I’m surprised he couldn’t get more than that.
Well… depression is a recurring problem right? I mean, I like Duke, feel for him, etc. but I can understand why teams with $$$ don’t want to commit to him as one of their 5 starters. And he is getting paid a lot for a #6.

I’d guess it’s not the depression so much as the depression plus the various physical issues he’s had over the past few years.
Whatever. Doesn’t matter. Glad to have him in the fold. It will be great if he can manage 20 starts or so.
NORAD tells me that Santa reaches Baghdad in two minutes, presumably to rain gifts on crusader and infidel alike. Since I only have a year or two left before my kids stop believing, I’m milking this shit for all it’s worth.
You don’t want to give them a schedule of when Santa is going do touch down in Oakland, though.
I’m very happy Duke’s coming back.
At last year’s ** Day, I made a big b**ner that everyone signed as a “Get Well” card to Duke–I wonder if he got it.
It’s undoubtedly why he re-signed.
I think you need to stay there, making more signs — howsabout one that says: ADRIANNNNNN!!!
If they add Beltre, pitching staff is healthy—–>this
We’ll bring back Rickey and he’ll hit like Jason Kendall?
shit, he’d outhit Kendall. He’s only, what, 52? OBP DEFINITELY higher. I bet Rickey could come in right now and get…what .380, OBP? What say you, numbers junkies?
looking at his last few years, let’s say .350.
Whee!
come back!
Maybe we need to bring back Adam Uumelmehuse to be his personal catcher.
INTO THE MUCK, SCUM QUEEN!
murmur, murmur…
God.Damn. Your drunk driving tests are hard!

So there. Go fuck yourselves now.
