Game 145: Athletics at White Sox 187

Most of the rain has moved out of the Windy City. The forecast calls for a cloudy night with a 50% chance of Punto. There’s a 0% chance of Jaso, who’s being sent back to Oakland after not passing his concussion tests.

It’s been one full month, Aug. 10 thru Sept. 9, with back-to-back wins in only one instance, against the Angels at the Coliseum. It would be a smart idea to accomplish that a few more times in these final three weeks, starting tonight.

RHP Chris Bassitt makes his second career start for the Robin Venturas. He faces:

Coco CF, Fuld LF, Donaldson 3B, Dunn DH, Reddick RF, Norris C, Moss 1B, Lowrie SS, Sogard 2B. Samardzija P.

        “if you don’t like it you can bassitt.”

        similar to hardly knew ‘er, it’s a commonplace between me and mrs AV. started with a song that got stuck in my head once “if you don’t like it you can shove it,” which i kept singing, when we were on the bridge to benicia and one of us said, “if you don’t like it you can crockett.”

        other manifestations:

        if you don’t’ like it you can it’s it.
        if you don’t like it you can rocket.
        if you don’t like it you can chocolate.

      Glen is completely generic, but he performs the TV pxp function adequately. Vince is identifiable as an individual, but he sometimes fails to meet the rudiments of his job description. Not sure I have a preference, though I’m on board with your idea of having Vince take Glen’s job.

  35. Soaker Sep 10,2014 8:21 pm

    I’ve thought all along the A’s would bounce back in the last two weeks, survive the wild card game and put on a strong performance in postseason.

    Until that inning.

  36. bear88 Sep 10,2014 8:21 pm

    This is why I really can’t shake the feeling that the A’s are now a bad team.

    That was awful.

    The supposedly slick-fielding second baseman doesn’t field a makeable ground ball.

    But no, it doesn’t matter. A double play ball! Oops. Freiman throws it into left field. Two men on.

    Passed ball, or whatever they called it.

    Gregerson forced to get five outs, only gets four.

    Maybe they’ll pull it out in the 9th. But sorry, this isn’t a good team anymore.

  37. vignette17 Sep 10,2014 8:25 pm

    Great pitching is wasted on this team. Samardzija and Gregerson are owed apologies. Can’t hit. Can’t field. Choke job.

    • Glorious Mundy Sep 10,2014 8:30 pm || Up

      Gregerson made one bad pitch after already getting five outs in the inning. Samardzija made none, that I can recall. Absurd to lose that game.

      • bear88 Sep 10,2014 8:36 pm || Up

        Gregerson made the bad pitch long after he should have been sitting in the dugout. He didn’t have to get four outs. He needed five. And he was in trouble because of the passed ball and the bases loaded, making it tough for him to throw pitches in the dirt.

        I don’t dislike the individuals on the team. They seem like nice guys. But they’re just so unrelentingly awful. They deserve every one of these losses.

    Know what? I’m done with this team at this point. I’m usually one of the more “look for the positives” fans around and I know everyone struggles from time to time out there, but this has turned into a monumental collapse I have no more patience for. I’m sick and tired of the offense being so shitty that there is no margin for error whatsoever from anyone on the mound or in the field. The way I’m feeling about them right now, they’re going to have to get to and win the wild card game for me to even watch another game this season. I’m that fed up right now.

    • Glorious Mundy Sep 10,2014 9:03 pm || Up

    I’m very intentionally not emotionally attached to wins or losses anymore.

    However, I have a feeling they’re going to get hot the last week, claw their way back into the Wild Card game, and win it.

    After that, things are gonna get silly.

          Leviticus 16:

          From the Oaklandish community Melvin is to take two second basemen for a sin offering and a reliever for a burnt offering. . . Then he is to take the two second basemen and present them before the WOLFE at the entrance to the Field of O.co. He is to CAST LOTS for the two goats — one lot for the WOLFE and the other for the scapegoat. Melvin shall bring the goat whose lot falls to the WOLFE and sacrifice it for a sin offering. But the goat chosen by lot as the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the WOLFE to be used for making atonement by sending it into the Nation of Athletics as a scapegoat . . .

          A soliloquy of fresh-sounding ideas which would probably be disastrous.
