I remember when I cared about football. I think a lot of it was a visceral association with color combinations and nostalgia about rainy childhood winter days watching with my grandma.
Nowadays, I root for a minimization of injuries and a maximization of Goodell and Dan Snyder getting humiliated.

I agree with this, Lew seems much more engaged as a fan than nearly all of his peer owners. Though the on-camera diamond level seats have always struck me as self-serving.
And I’ve never once seen him join in a Let’s Go Oakland chant.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
I suspect it’s one part “I’m afraid of the fans” one part “really really good view of the game” and one part “I’d rather not be in one of these box seats.”
disheartening. so much effort by the A’s to stay alive and hit luckily enough to get a single run in. opponents make runs come easy as almost a byproduct one batter coming to the plate after another.
*i’m* AV. alex vause. put this loon in psych before she hurts someone.
He’s your most dangerous hitter. He’s extremely hot. And by your own decisions, you remove him from the game. The Astros deserve to lose just because of that.
Reminds me of this game when Scioscia twice had O-Cab bunt ahead of Vlad, who the A’s then intentionally walked. That was a big win for the A’s, since they ended up losing the next two.
That one’s on Melvin. You have to know that Cook is not to be trusted. He can be great. He can be awful. But you know right away. I did. I’m not that smart.
Fuck this fucking embarrassment of a team. You don’t see an epic collapse like this without a systematic meltdown from every aspect of the organization, from the front office to the managing to the pAthetic, joke of an offense.
The worst thing about the A’s right now is that, while I hope Detroit loses this evening, I just don’t think they are a very good team anymore. It’s hard to imagine, even if they get into the playoffs and survive the play-in game, the team doing anything in the playoffs.
This gave me a good enough laugh to make it through the night. Thank you.
And for you collectors out there I have some vintage mid January 2003 Raiders for you. It a distinct Callahan and Robbins flavor that you will never forget.
think of it this way, At the start of the season, we expected to be behind the rnagers about this much. and fighting the angels for the WC.
its just a little different, but there are enough games left to turn it around and finish strong into the playoffs. and just few enough games that out lead is a nice cushion for the figuring it out to take more than a week.
It’s all in when a team is good and when a team is bad, not to mention some of the reasons why.
If this team started out this way in April and dug themselves a hole – hell, that’s exactly what they’ve done in the past – then turned it on in the second half, the excitement level is off the charts.
When they’ve gone 2/3 of the season kicking ass and taking names only to hit a major slump not only late in the year but at the same time two division opponents are about 10 games better over the same stretch, it leaves a lot of people fearing everything the team had done to get to this point is about to be wasted.
This is totally it. If we had been .500 at the all star break and now here we would be talking about how there is still hope and how we are the team to fear come October.
But the problem is in that scenario we just have to assume things will continue steady. Here we have yet to see solid evidence we can stop the Edmund FitzMelvin from taking on water. Until we can win back to back games I cant feel any confidence we will even stay in the hunt for the play in game. And from there who knows?
And for all of the much deserved criticism the offense has taken, over the last month and a half there have been 4 times where our best pitching staff in Baseball (TM) has allowed 0 or 1 runs. And 3 of those were in the first week of August. I know it is not fair to think they can be perfect, but at some point I need a Lester to stand up and say “get me 1 run and I’ll make the MFer stick”.
Not once it makes contact with the batter in the box, then it’s dead ball as Ed says. Can’t have an HBP on a swinging strike, so it’s a K, dead ball, game over.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
If it’s a dead ball because a guy swung at a pitch that was going to hit him, you can’t rightfully award him the base because the ball got away. That’s my guess.
And the Raiders score a meaningless late touchdown to cover the 5.5 point spread!
I remember when I cared about football. I think a lot of it was a visceral association with color combinations and nostalgia about rainy childhood winter days watching with my grandma.
Nowadays, I root for a minimization of injuries and a maximization of Goodell and Dan Snyder getting humiliated.
Hooray, Good Hammel!
hhhhhhhhhhammel pitching may be the thing i’m looking for to prove my working theory that shooty and the barons diamond guy both went to the same school of misguidedly affected enunciation and cadence, hhhhhhhhacienda campus.
(of course, i won’t be listening. but it’s nice to know i could prove the theory if i was willing to stand the pain.)
Oh man, that Barons guy. He and the smug surfer-voiced DGDG guy are high up on my hate list.
and he’s making his children follow suit! someone call protective services.
Add the dog voice in the mattress commercials on csn.
i miss the days when the same gravelly voiced dude was doing about half the spots on the radio broadcast. am/pm was one of them. in my mind he looked like bobby munson.
I know BoMel’s in love with the idea of the speedsters at the top, but it’s probably time to stop batting Gentry second.
Keys to the Game:
1. Punish Keuchal Quickly
2. Whoop Their Little Brother
Incisive.
Little brother?
nice lineup puzzle, btw. had to look up #s 7, 8 and 9 but i had fun.
Soto and especially Parrino were obscure, but every time they call Freiman “Big Nate” I immediately think of Thurmond. Freiman really should wear uni #42.
I think there is some sort of rule against that…
Lew is in the walkway telling some chick “I’m pretty sure that is my seat. Are you sure your ticket says that?”
This was not a reply, but hey…why not?
i wasn’t around for those GS years and i’m not a good enough B-ball fan to learn the history now… but i figured it was someone obvious that i just didn’t know.
My association went as far as “really tall guy”.
OK, boys, it’s hitting time. Crooked number coming up.
Hitting something out of the infield would be a start.
That works too.

gets both cheeks into the swing?
If Norris could do that he’d clear Mt Davis.
Hammel for play in game starter
a hit!
Things I learned from Google image search today:
1. Most of top results for “hit of pot” show Obama.
2. “Coco” is NSFW.
lew got his seat back
And continues to seem to be more and more interested. Saw him do the Peter Brand fist-turn-and-pull down on one of the K’s.
And he is knowledgeable enough to not get excited on JD’s warning track fly. Maybe he should be doing play by play instead of Glen?
he is at the games, he is engaged.
I agree with this, Lew seems much more engaged as a fan than nearly all of his peer owners. Though the on-camera diamond level seats have always struck me as self-serving.

I suspect it’s one part “I’m afraid of the fans” one part “really really good view of the game” and one part “I’d rather not be in one of these box seats.”
And part “I don’t really express my excitement in that particular way.”
if the chant were “let’s leave Oakland” he might join
lmao
not dp not dp not dp not dp not dp
oh come the fuck on
Astros getting read for the bunt that will not be coming
The A’s do seem to be bunting a bit more.
I was going to ask a question about post season roster construction…what a silly man I am.
wp, wp, wp, wp!
Hammel for MVP
Rally time!
Ok no way Gentry GIDPs.
Good bunter? hasn’t he broken his hand twice bunting?
The third baseman wasn’t back.
Ok, tom Lawless. whatever
Um, Ray. The third base raised his hand to tell him NOT to throw. He wasn’t moving fast to the bag.
Loading the bases for the strongest cheeks on the A’s roster.
what’s this cheek thing i seem to have missed?
In describing a well-hit Houston drive earlier, Shooty said the hitter “got both cheeks into that one.”
glad i asked. [turns other cheek.] sorry i asked.
a score!
A run! Nice hit by Norris, even if Altuve got the out at first.
yup. I was hoping he came up with it cleanly and went to second. I am not sure he gets donaldson
It’s Something!
It’s like trying to squeeze blood from stone with this offense.
Wow – the yard held that one in.
After that play was over Crisp and Gentry both looked back up at the wall like they were surprised it was still standing.
I like the carter, small head nod to the dugout after the double.
No claws, no fake bash
The bullpen should have been up before now.
Yep.
Hammel is leaving a lot of pitches up now.
Just setting it up for Qualls to come in, I guess.
No way he pitches today.
sipp then
He’s rested now.
And there is you ex a combo
disheartening. so much effort by the A’s to stay alive and hit luckily enough to get a single run in. opponents make runs come easy as almost a byproduct one batter coming to the plate after another.
Why the fk is he still in there.
Melvin should have pulled him a couple of batters ago. Even I could see that he was leaving pitches up.
It’s like he refuses to consider it until they reach 100 pitches. 100 isn’t some magical fking number.
Shouldn’t have pitched past Carter if even then.
It was the walk that was the red flag. The last two pitches were high and wide, not even close.
It’s less about red flags and more about having gotten 6 solid from him, a lead, and knowing he can implode at any moment.
Guh. Walk comes around to score the go-ahead run.
Still. Not a terrible day from Hammel
Not at all. He continues to pitch well. Not his fault the manager left him in too long.
Seattle loses at least.
Redeem yourself, Nate.
Redeemed.
You got it.
God, it’s nice to have Lowrie back.
nice, big nate. nice.
Freiman! That was well-timed.
BIG NATE!
Big Nate indeed!
Gonzalez isn’t very good, is he?
Add on mojo.
Need more. Carter’s coming up again.
Good at-bat, Gentry. Come through, come on.
While I don’t like the Niners at all, I still love the mortification of the Cowboys on their home field.
Good move, BoMel.
in therer but high is not a thing, vince
“Over but low” is another anti-favorite of mine.
It annoys me more than all of his non-descriptions of the action combined.
Plenty of danger in this inning. And here’s Altuve with a leadoff hit.
Yes, good call here.
Thanks for allowing the A’s to avoid Carter.
And now he’s out of the game.
The A’s are wising up.
I would’ve taken out Gregerson after that.
Psh. Shows how much I know.
Also, very thankful Parrino’s in there.
Wooo!
and that’s why callaspo never sees the field again
Yeah, hit the ball to Parrino. (Note who isn’t playing there.)
I love it when opposing managers have a National League mentality.
That was a seriously stupid move.
That was some serious managing fail.
This is one of the few games since Doolittle went on the DL that his absence will be felt, barring a bunch of runs in the bottom of the 8th.
I can think of one save situation since he has been out
Did we get Good Cook or Bad Cook?
He looked fantastic on Friday.
Bad.
A two-out hit would be awful nice right now.
Goddammit, Ray! You don’t have to bring up Ortiz every time Keith Foulke is mentioned.
So far, bad Cook.
Take him out.
seriously? the fking waive?
in the 9th?
with a one run lead?
I blame the waive for that walk
after sept 1?
come on, cookie.
This isn’t Good Cook at all.
Others are available. Cook isn’t even close.
That’s one. Hopefully, Young’s mound visit helped Cook fix something.
Maybe. Cook still doesn’t look good, aiming rather than throwing, as they say.
Unbelievable no one’s warming up.
Is anyone up?
the pitches, mostly.
What the hell is wrong with O’Flaherty.
Now Abad is up? Criminey.
Tony Sipp is looking for a Hallmark card to offer his condolences to Ryan Cook as I write this.
Melvin f’d this up.
Altuve is going to bat now. Abad to face righties.
The only guy in the stadium who didn’t know Cook had shit was the one guy who matters.
Fuck Cook. There is no room for a reliever who you can’t predict to be either awesome or terrible. Trade his ass this offseason.
I STILL BLAME THE WAIVE
All your fault! All your fault! All your fault!
Thanks for nothing, Cookie.
OK, this is enough drama I think.
The worst thing is that Abad will be charged with the blown save.
And Cook gets a hold, doesn’t he?
that’s all? but they’re combining to throw a no-hitter 9th!
Yeah, walk Altuve. The first smart thing Melvin has done this inning.
FKING THROW STRIKES
It’s good that we’re adding stupid fucking managing to the shitshow of the last couple months.
BINGO!
Unfucking believable. Disgraceful. Where the fuck was EOF?
That was awful. I didn’t think Abad would catch Cook’s disease.
Bullpen/managerial fail here in the T-9th.
THROW A MOTHERFUCKING STRIKE!
I guess Doolittle’s absence is being felt now.
a good amount of this.
What a clustercuss.
They didn’t allow a hit!
Five walks. Unbelievable.
I predict we see the infielder we didn’t want to see leading off.
I hope we get Sipp version 1.0, instead of the guy we saw Friday night.
I believe that was the A’s relievers today.
Callaspo!?!????
Parrino: 2-for-3 today, pinch-hit for by Callaspo who’s got 3 hits in his last 33 AB. Let’s see what happens.
4 pitch strikeout. Another brilliant moment for BoMel.
Make that 3-for-34.
Counterclockwise mojo.
Don’t you make me beg.
That may have been the best AB of the game by an A’s hitter.
Followed by possibly the worst.
A terrible showing late here by the A’s after yesterday’s walkoff. I’m about ready to write the division off. Very disappointing.
Angels’ magic number is 14.
The only good thing about recent events is that I don’t pay attention to their games now.
Gotta at least take 3 of 4 from Chicago, 2 of 3 from Seattle, roll over Texas and Philly, and get help.
in the word of the mustached one, unbelievabo.
That one’s on Melvin. You have to know that Cook is not to be trusted. He can be great. He can be awful. But you know right away. I did. I’m not that smart.
It usually just takes one batter to realize whether he has it or not. Our manager needed the bases to be loaded on walks.
I’ve reached my breaking point.
Fuck this fucking embarrassment of a team. You don’t see an epic collapse like this without a systematic meltdown from every aspect of the organization, from the front office to the managing to the pAthetic, joke of an offense.
When you’ve lost Melissa Lockard…
I paid a pretty penny for tickets to next Sunday’s game in Seattle.
I have marked it down as my personal breaking point with this team.
That tweet seems ill-advised for her.
I’m all in.
To quote Ari Gold, Ryan Cook is mother fucking fired.
Spoil away to your heart’s content, Astros. A nice 7-8 game winning streak will be just fine.
Why was Cook in the game in the first place? Is O’Flaherty hurt?
Then fucking use Otero for more than one batter and save Gregerson for the ninth.
exactly
It got overhyped, but I’ll tell you one thing.
I sure appreciated Sean Doolittle today. At least he makes guys swing the bat to beat him.
The worst thing about the A’s right now is that, while I hope Detroit loses this evening, I just don’t think they are a very good team anymore. It’s hard to imagine, even if they get into the playoffs and survive the play-in game, the team doing anything in the playoffs.
I think a play in game is not a problem. the problem is a series,
I knew something was going to go wrong as soon as people started the fking wave.
Well, at least my Bills won. Surely getting emotionally invested in their season is a good idea.
Emotional investment in sports teams always brings joy and never ever bitter soul-crushing disappointment.
anybody want to buy some shares of argentina 2014? going for mere pennies on the dólar blue!
This gave me a good enough laugh to make it through the night. Thank you.
And for you collectors out there I have some vintage mid January 2003 Raiders for you. It a distinct Callahan and Robbins flavor that you will never forget.
So unpleasant following this team right now.

This is absolutely true and the source of my continuing hope. But it doesn’t really mitigate the truth of GM’s statement.
Huh? I expected us to win the division at the start of the season.
Me too.
Can someone explain the end of the rays/Orioles game?
Runner on second 2 out. batter swings at strike three. ball hits batter, goes to backstop, runner from second advances and batter runs to first.
Batter is called out.
I get that the ball is dead when it hits the batter, but why is he then out?
Is it more complicated than swing and a miss, strike three, ballgame?
Uncaught third strike.
Not once it makes contact with the batter in the box, then it’s dead ball as Ed says. Can’t have an HBP on a swinging strike, so it’s a K, dead ball, game over.
This seems like something which is only the rule because no one wrote down a better rule for that specific confluence of circumstances.
If it’s a dead ball because a guy swung at a pitch that was going to hit him, you can’t rightfully award him the base because the ball got away. That’s my guess.
Is that what it ended up as, though?
No, but he should be able to run it out. It’s an uncaught third strike.
Not if he deflects the ball in any way by it striking him.
You can’t undo a dead ball and my guess is that it was initially called a HBP before the call was overruled as a swing?
It may also have been ruled an Excellent Opportunity For An Umpire To Fuck Up The Game.
that is much more simple
Well, there you go.
Never mind, apparently someone did write down a rule.
“Major League Baseball: There’s a Rule for That”
“Major League Umpires: There’s a Way to Misapply That Rule”
