On the bright side, my daughter got a part-time job on her second day of college. She has demonstrated a consistent ability to get jobs, and hates not working. These are handy traits.
Nice! Being dependable is a valuable skill and will serve her well.
So far, we like her better at college. I think she likes us more, too. And we are in more regular contact. Only downside: it’s more expensive.
Taking the Upgrade show on the road again…can’t get enough of that Central Valley air. Chewy.
And my younger daughter has a friend over after the end of her second week of high school (she’s a freshman). And my wife is sleeping for a change.
So things are OK. I just hate baseball.

I’m bringing another quart of Lagunitas Sucks, a 12er of PBR, and a flask of Bulleit, I figure this will cover me through the next two A’s games no matter what happens.
That would get me through the Cal game this afternoon. After that there’s enough time for a little hike to the liquor store to reload for the A’s game. (I’m following locals’ holiday weekend policy here: either leave the area entirely, or hunker down in the house for three days.)
As it turned out I was wrong, and after hearing the end of Sunday’s game on XM radio I had to get a 22 oz Arrogant Bastard to finish the mourning.
I’d settle for a split here. Can we please at least do that? Get through this awful fucking month and start a new in September?
They’re going against Mystery Starter (Rasmus, possibly) on Saturday, so I guess they have a chance.
I’m not crazy about Sunday’s matchup, but I don’t really like how any A’s lineup matches up against any competent pitcher these days. So ignore my pessimism. But Kazmir has been quite good all season, so it’s not like they have no chance.
Same. Big difference between 3 out and 5 out.
Possible situations on Monday morning:
5 out – Angels effectively clinch division, Mariners series takes on huge importance and the focus shifts to just making the play-in game at all.
3 out – Angels in good position, A’s at least hang onto hope. Would lose less ground to Mariners/Tigers/Royals.
1 out – Best outcome possible. We’re still thinking division title then. Maybe the injured will get healthy, and the slumping will stop.

OK, so let’s say we do end up in the WC game. I assume we all prefer KC as the opponent despite the recent unpleasantness? And then Detroit despite the less recent, but more memorable, unpleasantness? Is Felix that much scarier than Scherzer or Price?
Absolutely. This team plays against Felix the way the pre-2012 A’s played in Yankee stadium. Terrified and punchless.
The A’s are just as likely to score 0-2 runs against Felix as they are against Shields, Price, Scherzer. Lester matches up best with the Mariners so bring on Felix.
Another thing is that in a WC game the Tigers’ biggest weakness — the bullpen — might not come into play. They could send both Scherzer and Price out there.

1) We’re in the middle of the bad stretch. We felt kinda hopeless during the bad stretch around the same time last season, when Texas was on fire too.
2) We got used to the idea that we were winning the division this year so the wild card feels like a huge let down.
3) We traded our talismanic figure. That has dealt a serious psychological blow to the fanbase. (I might be projecting with this one).
I think 3 is accurate
#3 certainly gives (a lot of) us reason to play the “what if” game, which any Buddhist or pop equivalent would tell you only leads to sorrow.
The way I see it, if he was such a talismanic figure, he should have put up the numbers to go along with.

The Angels play 23 straight days starting Monday and going through the series in Oakland. Lots of Astros, Twins and Rangers in there, but it should at least put pressure on their thin rotation.
I am not loving the Chris Young-Jason Hammel matchup on Monday. Would much prefer Pomeranz, alas.
The A’s haven’t actually announced the starters for that series, so maybe they’re planning to pull Jesse Chavez out of mothballs or something.

I don’t know if it is real deal, but Fresno State has a university market that makes one that is head and shoulders better than Silva (at least the one time I have tried it). One other I haven’t tried yet is at the Meat Market. Most everything they do is pretty good so I want to try it, but my laziness prevents me from stopping in and picking it up.
I have on my list to ask my cousins up in Alameda if they have ever found anything better since Santos closed up, but I am pretty sure they haven’t.

So I totally misunderstood the way the bracketing works. Argentina lost to Greece, but both teams stayed on the opposite side of the bracket from the USA, and neither team can see Spain until the semis. Chances are, they’ll have a rematch in the quarters. The group play in this thing is totally pointless.
Looks like Argentina will get Brazil in the first knockout round though. Tasty!
Meanwhile, avoiding the USA in the knockouts was the primary goal in Group D. Australia basically tanked a game to Angola today (benching its NBAers) in order to fall behind Slovenia in the standings. That means Australia avoids the USA until the semis, while Slovenia will probably face the USA in the quarters. Goran Dragic (Slovenia, Phoenix Suns) called the Aussies out about it on twitter. Drama!
it does seem the groups aren’t thought out as the qualifiers go into brackets. all the same-group members are in the same half brackets! lots of chances for rematches right after the round of 16th. arg-gre would be in 6 days, for example.

yeah, much closer than it looked on paper.
czech had a clear goal earlier that they didn’t cash in, and possibly one later too. cech pretty much made the play that the US scored on. but there were lots of signs of good things, including a non-howard goalie (though i don’t understand how the US nationalized hugo chavez so quickly), some nifty saves by the D (albeit sometimes prompted by slop by same D), and the attack seemed speedy and incisive. at least as i saw it watching out the corner of my eye. typical friendly, pretty first half, the second not so much.

Speaking of heroin, you were looking for books to read…I’ll finish Wild by Cheryl Strayed tomorrow. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it and a woman might relate to the protagonist better than I could. The movie, with Reese Witherspoon as Cheryl and Laura Dern as her mother (not a spoiler: Mother dies in the first chapter of the book but nevertheless is a central character) comes out in a month or two.
