the lightwave is coming in greater force tonight. I hope our guys step out until it stops. Fuck that.
#Athletics at #Angels: Crisp CF, Fuld LF, Donaldson 3B, Vogt 1B, Moss DH, Reddick RF, Norris C, Callaspo 2B, Sogard SS.
— Susan Slusser (@susanslusser) August 29, 2014
Bobby Crosby in the house.
Also per Ms. Slusser, Lowrie being sent out on rehab. back on monday. I say let him play in anaheim.
UPDATE: Vogt says he didn’t see the lightwave
Hi.
Haigh.
Thanks, and go As.
oh fuck this guy.
Thanks, and go As.
that just makes my blood boil.
I don’t blame that call on the loss. I just really hate stupid CYS shit like that
Bull shit. On both counts.
it really puts the lie to it.
Aybar has to move out of the way of the fielder. he is moving out of Moss’ way
Yes, that fielder who wasn’t even on the dirt when he diverted and never touched the runner. And oh yeah, you’re out of the base line if you try to avoid a tag while NOT in the baseline. You’re also out if you obstruct the fielder from making the play, which Aybar did by running on to the infield grass. So it’s bullshit on three fucking layers.
Actually, one of the things I enjoy about plays like that is being forced to go spelunking in the depths of the rule book to sort it out. (He’s right on the second count, 6.05(k).)
You can’t run out of the baseline to avoid being tagged. And you can’t move out of the baseline to obstruct a fielder from making a play. Aybar did both.
He can absolutely run outside the baseline in that situation because Moss was attempting to field a batted ball, which is one of many reasons why that play wasn’t obstruction.
“attempting to field” is key. not “fielded” or “about to field” it clearly describes moss’ behavior
Well, the obstruction rule is worded differently (“in the act of fielding”). If that means that you have to be the one who comes up with the ball or you can be guilty of obstructing, then MLB needs to announce that.
This applies more:
Instead of running away from the fielders, he intentionally ran into them by going outside the baseline.
“consensus”
This is not helping the bad taste. What a colossal shithead.
I am not tinfoil hatty. I don’t think they would “go easy” on the team the aggrieved the night before, but shit like this makes me think they are too dumb to get anything right. and actually be actively bad, in a non random way.
I’m of a mind that umps are digging in on non-reviewable calls simply because they’re not reviewable. A turf kind of thing.
good point skipper
Nah, I think it’s pure CYA, in the have each others’ backs imperative style like cops.
good point professor
Thanks, little buddy!
There are few things that make my blood boil more than a proudly obstinate umpire.
Seriously. It’s one of the biggest things wrong with this country: the total inability to just fucking admit when you are wrong.
Man, I may never have agreed with you more about anything. Instances of this directly anger me routinely.
You’re wrong!
I’m okay with that.
You’re wrong!
Well then.
(Apologies to Colin)
I don’t dislike NOFX, though I haven’t listened to them much since high school.
This. He needs to learn when to STFU.
HOW THE MOTHERFUCK
Excellent cure for bad taste in mouth: Berkeley Safeway selling $6 quarts of Lagunitas Sucks.
I just drank like 2/3 of one of those Lagunitas Sucks quarts. But I think I paid $9 for it (still totally worth it).
Putting 100% faith in you FSU. $6.49 quarts at the Save Mart by my house. Picked one up to be the official Ace drink of my (nobody cares) fantasy FB draft tonight.
Last night I took 3 benadryl and didn’t give a fuck what happened after the eighth inning. Then work called. No, I won’t come in.
I think I would hate the Angels 5% less if they always dressed like this.
yup.
that material and color last night were hideous
Yes, these are Autry-era. Disney gave them the stupid wings in the font, and they’ve never really recovered.
These remind me of Reggie.
I still liked Joe Rudi even when he was an Angel.
back in the box meathead
Oh man, Lester/Felix day game on Wednesday. If ever there was a day to play hooky.
Nice hops Callaspo!
He makes Lagunitas Sucks? Who knew.
I think it’s consensual.
Hot dogs cannot consent.
yes means yes
And hot dog means sex.
yup
He needs to go about 8-for-5 tonight to lessen my anger at him.
Callaspo has a pad on his glove to make him more awkward in the field?
hey albert, instead of mad dogging reddick, be faster.
Has he always been this unlikeable? I don’t watch the NL.
I think so, full of himself in a not fun way
It was a bit endearing when he was young, in a purity of Sir Lancelot sort of way. Then it became clear he was just stuck up.
What’d he do?
He hit a hard single to right and Reddick tried to throw him out at first, which meant he actually had to run out the play. He was apparently aggrieved because he gave Reddick a long, hard, angry stare.
It’s an Unwritten Rule. You only do that to a pitcher.
and michael taylor
I would not put it past Scioscia to have Reddick thrown at during this series.
Seriously, Prince Albert can go FK himself in a can.
Is your tool running?
What do you say you go FK yourself, Albert?
he’s old. probably can’t
He should steal second to make the A’s look bad.
I kinda wish cespedes would try that from left
Scioscia is being suck a dick not announcing the starter for tomorrow
Don’t edit that.
heh
Lol
Starting to hate these Angels as much as the Lackey-Krod iterations.
hamilton against a lefty again. Damn
Slow motion? assholes at CSN
I want to fking destroy them. 6 A’s runz mojo please.
Man I despise the Angels. I didn’t feel this way a decade ago even when they were hurting us by being good. I think the money has gone to their heads and made them arrogant as fucking shit.
Its the only team I dislike.
You came by the hate honestly, first hand over years. I feel that way about the Washington football team.
I’d think the (1A) Broncos and (1B) Steelers deserve mention above them.
Hell, it’s taken 20 years of success under the Phil Knight ownership to develop much hatred for the Oregon Ducks. I still think of Stanford and USC as our two arch enemies.
There’s a certain kind of fan hate you only develop by living among the other team’s insufferable asshole fans. That’s the way I hate the Washington football team. There are most definitely teams I loathe as rivals much more than DC, like Duke and Denver and Anaheim, but I’ve never been forced to breathe in the odiousness of their supporters every day, year after year.
If I were ever forced to live in Boston I am certain I would go on a full psycho killing spree within a year or two.
hi
(makes note)
Truth.
the orange county bros I grew up with are dumb dumb dumb
Those good 2004-2009 Angels teams were made significantly less hateable by the presence of Vlad. These Angels don’t have a single player I like.
I think I don’t mind Howie Kendrick.
This
He was going to be the one exception. But I don’t like him. He’s just kind of there, being non-offensively good.
this is my position. plus I feel sorry for him that he wants to be called howard and never is
He does? That’s pretty funny.
I don’t know if that is still the case. A few years ago I read that he was going to be called “howard” and no one ever did.
He is potrayed well in the Michael Mcarthy book. Seems he has a compelling back story. and an interesting draft story
Crap. I like him now.
If Lester doesn’t prevail there will be some hate and discontent.
you know us.
no vince, norris is not also showing signs of “coming out of it”
Nope. And believe me, I am straining on every single pitch of every last Norris at bat to see something I can talk myself into thinking means he’s coming out of it.
Keebs picking up Callaspo
Lester getting squeezed?
Thanks, and go As.
Looked like he got a little spanking from Cuzzi at the end of the inning.
He has to realize he’s an A now, not a Red Sox.
Please. Stop replaying that woman screaming.
Lester seems to have a lot of these post-inning chats with umps.
I’m going to enjoy this now, because next season it will really piss me off.
who cares about the dodgers
We will, when we play them next season.
On the bright side, if he signs with the Dodgers after this season, there will be a measure of schadenfreude watching the Gnats fans bitch about it.
No hits?
solo
Lawd, whadda bunch of whiners.
hey its don baylor in a 70s/80s angels uni!
you know, I think coco and gentry and fuld all get to vogt’s fly out.
And no Ken, I don’t see any joy in trouts play. He is great. but he looks like he is just doing his job
NO WAY THE ONLY GUY WHO MAKES THAT PLAY IS TROUT OR JETER!!!!!11!1!1!!!
So i put one of them privacy blockers on my computer and the folks at em el bee tee vee have not figured it out yet. every once in a while they ask me to reenter my credit card info to confirm my location and tell me that if I am out of town on work, turn off my [vpn? i don’t know, something] that my work put on my work lap top. (don’t know why they think i am travelling for work)
TV is kinda fun.
it thinks i’m in england
Thanks, and go As.
that is next for me. No new york games yet
THAT WAS A BALK
Thanks, and go As.
Oh good another missed call.
and almost kicked melvin out because of it
Well, these umps have already thoroughly proven they’re blind.
don’t the umpires have to, you know, watch the game?
Quite obviously not.
Why watch the game when it’s perfectly acceptable to apply the one in your mind to the one being played for real?
I will never really understand the balk rule, and I am at peace with that.
Me too.
beckham couldn’t handle the lights
It does look like it could influence the fielders a lot more than the hitters.
The lights? You want the lights?
make them pay for trading you for green
I will understand quantum theory before I understand why Alberto Callaspo is still on this team.
Monkey shit.
Hard to sustain a rally with this many black holes in the lineup.
help me lowrie and jaso, you are my only hope
The Lowrie injury has been a killer. Back on Monday hopefully.
Yep, even those he’s been mediocre offensively this year, the step down to a second one of Sogard/Callaspo/Parrino every game is still huge.
If his neck wasn’t finished before that…
Well we’re fucked.
Yep.
God dammit. No.
August feels like we’re just watching Game 5 after fucking Game 5 over the past 15 years.
That was seriously demoralizing. Fuckin A, man, that’s gonna be hard to bounce back from. For everyone.
It may not be that bad. That’s a “stinger” in football.
This is Crisp we’re talking about. And the A’s.
He’s dead.
Yeah, but it’s more than that. The HR, two runs down, team leader lies hurt on the field. It’s a seriously bummer vibe, man. I at least will have a hard time bouncing right back. The A’s hopefully are more resilient. Hopefully.
the slow mo from behind the wall with the ball slipping out of the glove was poetic
Damn it. Let’s win it for the Crisper.
Let’s go Oakland!
I am wondering what to type to say “click” for the season
Kind of feels like it, doesn’t it? Unless Moss would be kind enough to crush a fucking ball over the wall for us.
(i am only kidding thunderbutt)
Mic drop, bitches.
“there’s always next year.”
GOT TO FIND A WAY TO STEP ON THE CLUTCH
why?
So we can change gears I guess? Shit, I don’t know.
WE DID NOT STEP ON THE CLUTCH AND WE STALLED
Not only do I have this game to deal with, I also have an Eagles concert wafting through the night air. Presently working through “Life’s Been Good”.
something something Reddick in the clutch
Go fuck yourself Weaver. Against a half way decent offense you’d have been fucking toast.
yeah, he showed vogt reddick and fuld!
oh sogard
The window of opportunity is looking like shattered car glass on the pavement.
The engine remove, the car put up on blocks.
Unfortunately, this series appears to be turning it from a “prolonged slump” to a full-blown El Foldo.
I will stand up against some…some…of this pervasive Eeyoring and proclaim that hope still exists. Tomorrow, maybe.
I do take substantial consolation in knowledge that the players and coaches don’t fall into nearly the depths of despair inhabited by the likes of us.
We’ll make the play-in game.
I’m not even so sure of that. M’s & Tigers are playing neck and neck and aren’t all that far off from us.
if moss and donaldson start hitting home runs, and lowrie comes back OK, things are fine.
I am fine in the play in game, that will make for the most epic of stories during the WS prarade
From a numbers perspective, I believe BPro has them at about a 1/4 chance at the division and a near certainty for a wild card spot. Of course, you did not have to trade Russell, Cespedes, McKinney, etc for a guaranteed chance at the wild card…
The loss today doesn’t bother me as much as losing Coco, which could definitely ding that 1/4 chance a bit.
why is aybar mad at kendrick? he couldn’t score on that unless he was running on th epitch
He wanted him to run into Lester and get an obstruction call.
fuck this fucking bullshit team
fuck beane for not actually going all in. fuck him for sogard callaspo punto and parrino getting playing time in a god damn stretch run.
wrap it up guys. They can’t do it.
Thanks, and go As.
the last two losses and to a lessor extent this one is directly linkable to poor middle infield defense.
LET’S GO OAKLAND!!
john hickey suffering from a concussion?
DON”T YOU KNOW I AM PUJOLS??!!! HE IS OUT
Thats obstruction on poo holes right?
yup
he’s going to be out because fuck this team
Thanks, and go As.
he might be out. but it should be inconclusive
Make up call, but not good enough.
lucky
They can’t even get 4 hits let alone 4 runs.
Thanks, and go As.
It’s true. I’ve never seen this team score four runs.
I want the waste pond at San Onofre to get hit by a cruise missile and rain lethal radioactive fallout over everything south of Oxnard. Right after the A’s plane leaves Sunday. JediLeroy, Ed’s parents, please get out while you can.
I want a cataclysmic earthquake to open a rift from the Pacific to the Salton Sea and basically turn Southern California into an abyssal basin.
turn?
remember home runs?
those were fun
not so much.
Thanks, and go As.
vince, shut up about Cespedes. he was fun, but not the offensive force you think. they would not have been doing better in this game if TOmmy Milone or Jesse chavez was pitching
Vince doing his SFGate commenter routine is not fun.
Sometimes it seems to me as if Free Kraut reads more like Hummus on the House.
Whom, us?
It’s all the goddamn vegetarians, isn’t it?
put some hits together please
not with a bang, but with a pop out
We are the hollow men.
hey! way to make a play Eric
Happy 2009 everyone
100 over with
20 under without
guess the numbers didn’t matter so much after all, huh?
I really don’t think they do
3 ks for weaver. He should not be beating us like this
Huston’s face loost the same, but heis body looks old
WE ARE ALL GONNA DIE!!!!!
We are all gonna have a lot more money in our bank accounts at the end of October than we expected a couple months ago.
Enough of this defeatist bullshit. I have enough faith in the A’s organization to know for a certainty that any postseason ticket refunds wouldn’t be issued until January at soonest.
Thank you FSU. I needed a good laugh before I turned in.
Good laugh? He was just being brutally honest.
As true a sentence as has ever been written.
defensive indifference, I think its pitching indifference with sogard at the plate
I don’t like Nike gloves
Street pitching his 3rd straight day so at least he won’t be available tomorrow, probably.
I have no idea why they used him tonight.
Doesn’t Scoscia know he can pretty much toss anyone out there and the A’s aren’t going to score more than three runs in an entire game?
Blargh. What a depressing game.
I am ok with it. Better than yesterday. Sure Coco’s injury was/is horrifying. Yes, the offense was ineffective, but there is something to be said about being beaten fair and square.
WIth the right luck, the A’s win this one, but only with the right luck. Yesterday, no luck was needed, just a fair shake.
Also, I don’t think anyone expected coco to be healthy for the rest of the season
If no one, including the A’s front office, thought Coco would be healthy the rest of the season, Beane shouldn’t have bet it all on 2014.
I think Beane was counting on Coco to be ready for the playoffs. (It might still happen.)
Why do I get the feeling the people at Cache Creek are busy sewing on black “4” arm patches on the give away jersey for monday?
My dislike of both trades feels warranted at the moment. So there’s that. No middle infield help. No hitting. Lost star shortstop prospect.
Laugh at me at the World Series parade.
lester trade was shocking, but I am fine with it.
The first trade…I just don’t know. it seems bad, but exciting bad, and that’s not bad, really. I should be able to forget about it like the Carlos gonzalez trade that I rarely remember about.
huh.
I thought we dominated last year
That will be what we say about 2014 next year.
And we will be right.
there was a modest slump in august at the same time texas was un-slumping.
Texas callaspo’d last year.
did we all die?
Yes. Well the rest of you did. I was already dead.
The only bright side is that the Beane-era A’s teams have a history of starting slow, roaring through July and August and September and then laying an egg in October.
Maybe they’ll do things in reverse this year, assuming they get to October and last longer than one play-in game.
If it wasn’t for the fact that he traded Addison, I think I’d be starting to wonder if Billy had ever actually believed in this year’s team, or if he was doing the usual hedging of bets. But he didn’t hedge his bets. He just didn’t make as many as he needed to. How can it be possible that he thinks keeping Alberto Callaspo and Nick Punto was a sound strategy?
the only arguable middle infielder that moved at the deadline was prado.
I am guessing that Rollins was, indeed, unavailable, which is mind boggling to me. He must be a total nut job.
there really was no way to upgrade at short or second.
Asdrubal Cabrera
They could have taken Valbuena instead of Hammel as the rumors suggested. I doubt the Cubs would’ve scuttled the chance to get Russell et al if it was Valbuena over Hammel.
Beckham and Drew would’ve been at least be able to provide solid defense. Drew has performed well offensively in the recent past. Beckham can hit lefties. Both can likely score from first on a double.
andeux mentioned Asdrubal Cabrera. There are never too many MIF options at the deadline but my impression is that there were more options this year relative to other years. None awesome but upgrades over what we have now, because what we have now is worse than 2012’s Weeks/Pennington.
Should mention that all of this water under the bridge….no point rehashing it over and over again since nothing can be changed now. But I’m in the mikev camp that you can’t really be “all in” on this year with such a horrid situation there.
hey, how bout that cust? i’m starting to think he may strikout too much?
no, what i meant to say is, the A’s are all in. just that… sometimes there’s a difference between being “all in” and having a “winning hand.”
I’m not sure that Russell wouldn’t have been an upgrade this year.
Knocka boom boom Jeema boom boom
i feel bad for not reading these, but i saw coco’s replay and the end of the game so i feel bad enough already and resent that you guys want to make me feel worse.
Hmm. Not sure I like the sound of this.
I think clubhouse dynamics are overrated, but they’re not irrelevant. It’s like any workplace.
Oh god bear. I just reread your comment while mine was posting and thought of my work situation. I’m sitting here saying they need to recognize and move on when I have been stuck in the suckzone for a year with bad managers, etc. UGH…
It’s overrated to an extent. Just like any workplace, it’s more a slow, subtle thing that takes time to have any acknowledge affects and sometimes those affects never end up showing up. But when they do it’s like they slowly erode things to the point of having a seriously negative influence. On the surface things seem fine until a bolt snaps and things come crashing down.
Here’s my problem with it. I am almost positive they said the same thing a week or two ago. I 100% believe they have been pressing, and trying to figure things out. But once you recognize it you need to be able to stop and get back to doing your thing.
That’s unfortunately a management issue. They really need Melvin to implode and really put them in their place. Knowing the issue and acknowledging the issue aren’t always going to lead to the necessary change. Sometimes what’s necessary is someone above them getting the point across. It’s almost like a defibrillator. It’s needs to be an external shock.
