Nice words from Cespedes. Hopefully the A’s can give him his wish, at least as far as this postseason goes. No way of knowing if there was ever a realistic possibility of keeping him long-term, but his sentiment is still nice and he had nothing but good things to say about being here. That’s business, right?

Also linking this because the story includes a mention from Jason Turbow about working on a book about the 1970s A’s, including a mention of something between Alvin Dark and Vida Blue. Comments at the bottom regarding Fuentes/Geren are from me, by the way.
What do you do when your mgr approaches the mound? You wait and hand him the ball, of course. At least you should: http://t.co/hb0IYS1Yfv
— Jason Turbow (@BaseballCodes) August 18, 2014
There have been suggestions over the years that Alvin Dark was a racist (and others strongly refuted that rumor, including Jackie Robinson). It is clear at least that Dark was a harsh moralist and an aloof manager. I don’t doubt that virtually everyone on the 1974 A’s roster hated his guts.
Of course, Cespedes went 0-for-5 tonight with 2 strikeouts and 1 RBI, leaving 6 on base in his ABs. He’s hitting .219 with a .231 OBP for Boston in 15 games, slugging .406.
Sounds like Cespedes is handling it better than A’s fandom.
Today 2 Jennifer 0
Yeah, but Jennifer’s got Jennifer pitching tomorrow, whereas Today’s throwing its’ fifth starter, who can’t get lefties out to save his life.
Nice. Tomorrow, Today is going down!
I’m not putting pants on tomorrow.

#WINNING
Are you putting on shorts? underwear? The devil’s in the details.
Sundress. The world can’t beat you if you’re wearing a sundress.
one of hte most underrated pieces of women’s clothing.
Thanks, and go As.
it’s so… subliminal.
ssss-UNDRESS! cough cough. ssss-UNDRESS!
Agreed on on three accounts.
#grantlandpitches
Until you’ve worn one on a hot summer day as a man, you have not experienced a secret truth of clothing: Men were robbed in the decision over who should be allowed to wear dresses.
Kilt.
Thanks, and go As.
Still have to wear a top and flannel is heavy.
Far fuckin cry from a sundress, my friend. A sundress is pure liberty in textile form. A kilt is just an inconvenient blanket with no fashion sense.
I say we take that shit back! Commando!
Amen, Brother. Keep the tenets of “manhood” that are nurturing and empowering, and drop the useless “man card” restrictive bullshit like the freshly soiled diaper it is.
Everybody is allowed to wear dresses.
If it feels good, do it. Feel free to reap the benefits of greater social acceptance of genderfluidity.
Nope. Especially since I’m moving back to Kansas now.
For real?
Apparently Downtown KC is the new cool place to be!
That’s Missouri.
what a noob
4realz
Good luck.
I made it. Just in time for the late August heat. I am good at plans.
but now you won’t be blacke onut on MLB.TV
If it’s an open carry state, I don’t see a problem. I can’t think of a better accessory for a summer sundress than a Smith & Wesson!
I’m sure it’s an open-carry state by now. Brownback has turned it into fucking Mordor.
Had to put on shorts to go back to work and deal with Monday again. Ugh.
It’s a hell of a Monday that can force you to deal with it on a Tuesday.
Pretty much. Emotionally exhausted. I slept most of the day.
So, the big weekend fundraiser was a success. We raised about $20,000, which will go a LONG way towards the operations budget and hiring another part-time staff member.
Plus, apparently, it’s standard practice for the sponsors to cut the checks sometime AFTER the event, as opposed to sending the checks BEFORE the event or presenting them during. The only organization who paid their sponsorship early was, of course, the Oakland Athletics.
So, here’s my proposal… We turn the A’s from a baseball club into an international non-profit fundraising clearinghouse. Turn Athletics LLC into Athletics NGO. “Stomper Without Borders” can provide medical supplies, while the Bob Melvin Human College Fund can send tens of thousands of kids to higher education that otherwise wouldn’t have had a chance. “Uncle Lew’s Got Yer Back” will give out cash grants to thousands of needy Bay Area students to pay for school supplies and tech, and “LGBTQIA’s” can fund all the AIDS charities and gender clinics.
Good to hear, and nice that the A’s sent the check ahead of time as well.
Good for the A’s. They seem like the type of org that wouldn’t have shocked me if they were a complete pain to work with.
The parts of the A’s that work directly with the public are really strong. Every time I’ve worked with their ticket services or community involvement staff they have been fantastic.
I wonder if it’s because they know they work for a guy who is so terrible at communicating with the public.
Becoming a non-baseball-team entity is the new market inefficiency.
Sometimes I do wonder which corporations will survive to become post-capitalistic sociocultural entities. Google and Lego and Zappo’s are the first to come to my mind.
Gentry started rehab in Sacto yesterday, could be back Friday for series vs Angels, who will start two lefties.
oh right. forgot about kitten.
Nowadays, everybody wanna talk like they got somethin to say, but nothin comes out when they move their lips, just a bunch of gibberish. The motherfuckers act like they…
never forget.
LMAO
What happened on 1-31-07?
I’d like to know why the litebrite lettuce is flipping me off.
I made it.
Oh. Cool!
This happened, the hilarity of which was greatly lessened by what happened last year.
You’ve seen this, I assume.
Never thought Hatteberg had it in him.
Yeah. I was underwhelmed. I wanted a little more edge to his voice.
It wasn’t perfect either, but damn good for just breaking into it unrehearsed.
if you lived through the william perry era, nothing else can ever live up.
Presumably whoever is back first of Blanks and Gentry pushes Freiman off the roster temporarily. If they are both back before Sept 1, what is the other move? We need to keep a backup infielder, I can’t see the team DFA’ing Fuld again after trading for him. Dumping Gomes may well be the right move, but seems even more unlikely.
Hammel DFA.
Hammel for Rollins
Really though, Frieman hit a few bombs but other than that basically doesn’t provide much.
Thanks, and go As.
He is our third-highest OPS since the All-Star Break.
it went from .687 to .854 last game.
Thanks, and go As.
he also has cost as many runs on defense as his 4 homers provided.
Still rather have him on the team than Callaspo.
I don’t disagree.
I still like to pronounce it: Collapse – Oh! Or: Craptastico!
Freiman at this time would already have been pushed off the roster by the first guy.
At this point, they’d just wait until Sept 1.
Callaspo DFA
Fosse bait
Perfect.
LOL
Man.. this is too FKing true.
How we’d cover Ferguson if it happened in another country.
Thanks, and go As.
heh
That’s both awesome and sad at the same time.
Sad, but true
“Unless you’re Lew Wolff, you can’t be that condescending with the city.”
Funny, but probably wrong. Waste Management are way bigger badasses than Lew Wolff. And the last time one of the big Bay area cities awarded a garbage contract the Mayor got indicted.
What’s the difference?
different payment plans. with bribery, it’s cash down. with politics, you can finance through to the eventual settlement.
Into which bank account was the check deposited.
Truthfully, most politicians don’t directly enrich themselves while in office. For most of them, I’ve come to believe, it’s much more about filling an ego need for dynastic power.
That sounds about right. It’s all greed. It’s just the difference in what currency they seek.
I had to do a little story on this yesterday, and WM’s PR staff are way more responsive than the A’s too.
they make a lot more money
NFL to halftime show candidates – you wanna play, you gotta pay.
Considering most bands make their money on touring/merchandise, I’m going to guess this doesn’t go over very well.
first sentence.
—
but really, how do i go nearly 30 years not thinking about terrible rap songs by the chicago bears and in one day they cross my ears twice?
I’d like to see some actual data to back that sentence up.
well i mentioned the fridge rap not 15 minutes ago and…
oh, you mean their sentence.
shrimp
i do love their marketeer math. hey a 30-sec ad costs $X, so 12 minutes of entertainment must be the equivalent of a $24X ad for the band…
(which i guess means the entire superbowl is nothing more than a $480X ad for football… as i’ve always said.)
Seriously dumb. I’d love for them all to boycott and them have no show or get desperate and have someone awful.
Up With People!
Hasn’t the latter happened pretty much every year?
Um… well… you see… um… Yes.
I find it hard to believe that any act big enough for the NFL to want gets a meaningful enough bump in record or ticket sales from a halftime performance to make it worth paying for the privilege.
Plus, doesn’t the league already make money off this crap by having Pepsi or whoever sponsor the show?
Google didn’t remember the pay to play boycott of the late 80s early 90s in the LA metal scene.
because it’s still going on.
it is certainly going in for me
As much as I love our unicorn-riding MaEl, it seems like he’s one middle infielder we shouldn’t regret not having.
Those Cardinals socks are so awesome.
Speaking of NFL obnoxiousness, it sounds like these “Red Zone” ads are spreading like the Spanish Flu in the local preseason telecasts.
That is hideous, quite possibly enough to make me turn off the TV if it becomes a regular thing.
There were enough serious complaints that they nixed that. At least out here. But seriously, how the fk do you even follow what’s going on with that shit there?
AV bait.
“The ‘the’ is essential in our name because it implies a definitive mass of ‘so so glos.’”
Cant believe it took the entire article and 2 comments for someone to get to The The.
neat. thanks.
I think i want to punch everyone involved in that article.

Like
At least we’re sending out our top 3 starters. Now, which offense are they going to send out for that game? April, May, June, July, or August?
The way I project the rotation for the rest of the season, the Angels get Lester and Kazmir 3 times each, Samardzija twice, Gray just the once and the fifth starter once. I have either Gray or Samardzija pitching a wild card game on September 30, and Lester opening the ALDS on October 2. If the A’s are locked into their wild card slot after Game 160, you could hold Lester for the wild card game, which he would pitch on 7 days rest.
Thank you for the thorough prognostication.
Why is it always a quick and easy fix AFTER a guy gets skipped/benched/sent down? Why couldnt hed see after his first 2-3 crap games?
The apologists would say that the Oakland coaches didn’t know Hammels’ motion well enough at first to diagnose a subtle flaw. looks like he’ll get at least one more chance next week to fix it.
I wonder whether Selig is going to sit with Lew tonight or mingle with the local populace. Deliciously awkward either way.
I think he’ll come through the center field gate in a Popemobile, and they’ll park it in foul territory over by the tarp.
Suite upstairs, I’d guess.
I was assuming Lounge at SFO.
so he is radio only too?
Can’t let ATandT park sit empty #shame
I’m just listening to the recording of the press conference (CSN aired it live but I don’t see an archive of it yet). As much as we all like to bash Bud, he did express what seemed like genuine affection for the Haas family (and Bob Lurie). And he said some interesting things about the territorial rights transfer – impliying that Haas and Lurie knew what they were doing, and chose not to have the rights go back to shared when the Giants didn’t move south (rather than just forgetting to do it or thinking it wasn’t a big deal). And:
Heh. We all hate Finley.
I dont hate Finley as much as I should. He is a man who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. If he had owned a team in the 1930s and 40s he would be seen as a Jacob Ruppert-reviving a franchise that was going nowhere and creating numerous innovations. It just so happens that he came around at a time where everything was changing labor wise and he was too far behind the curve to deal with that.
Agreed. He was a mean cheapskate, but he was our mean cheapskate, and whatever else is true he brought the A’s to Oakland and presided over a team that won three straight World Series.
And if my annual reading of Ball four tells me anything, it’s that all the owners were mean cheapskates. The difference was before Marvin Miller they could pretty much be mean with impunity.
Be a mean cheapskate all you want, in an era of mean cheapskates, but be a mean cheapskate who knows when to hold ’em and knows when to fold ’em. I’ve heard so many of those 1970s A’s say that Finley could have spent a fraction of what a lot of them ended up getting in free agency to keep those teams together. He didn’t have to break the bank, he just had to pay them a LITTLE more. The dude cared far more about winning disputes with other people than he cared about winning at baseball.
But that is all of Baseball then. If you go back and read Ball Four it seems like child’s play. The owners could have said we are going to double the base salary and put in some other minor tweaks and most of the players would have rode off into the sunset with smiles on their faces. It isnt like he was the only owner who was spending the least amount he could.
Now the one thing I will wonder about is the insurance annuity payment to Catfish. That seems not only cheap, but stupid to miss it. And if he doesn’t how does that change everything else? Is he enough to push us past the Sox in ’75? I dont know, but it certainly wouldnt have made us worse.
I guess Big Popup is good for something.
Anybody hanging out in the lot before the game? I’ve got some time to kill
How does the litigation do that exactly?
Doesn’t that kind of say a lot of about the legality of what they’re doing?
No.
Because even if he decreed that San Jose was off limits forever, the lawsuit would remain in play past Selig’s retirement date. I suppose that’s not true if he were to decree that San Jose was open to the A’s, except for the inevitable (and doomed) Oakland countersuit. Another clue that MLB ain’t letting the A’s go to San Jose.
Well it also wouldnt stop Lew from making a deal with Oak and/or AC to get the land and build at the Coliseum. Yes the odds of that happening before he retires are close to zero, but they are not zero.
Except such a decree wouldn’t actually keep the A’s out of SJ. It would just have Oakland waste money on an even more nonsensical suit than the SJ one. So not a clue of anything.
i confess that since the world cup, sbn/soccer has been in my browser memory and it’s been ever so easy to gravitate there to fact check (and mood check) what i read in the argentine press. it’s time to make a stand though. but i don’t have a better US-english morning clearinghouse of soccer news. anybody can helpz?
I recall Grantland having some decent stuff, but I’m not completely sure.
Thanks, and go As.
i see soccer columns there but not a lot of news news.
oh, yeah maybe that’s it. One guy does a pretty good EPL recap every week or so I think?
I’m kind of tired of grantland. Too much long form “look at how much I can spew out” stuff
Thanks, and go As.
I’m convinced that they don’t employ any editors.
there’s something odd about grantland’s self-presentation that i can’t get past and i don’t believe a word they say. total design prejudice on my part.
http://www.theguardian.com/football is the best for me.
Very England-centric of course, but they also have the big stuff from around the world.
thanks.
Eek.
Reader email from Magary’s “Why Your Team Sucks” on the Rams:
Can this be true?
I clicked over to the “Why Your Team Sucks” about the Raiders. No one has posted this quote yet??
I read that, and found it amusing, but as a season ticket holder I have a hard time getting past the tired old “get shanked in the parking lot” trope. I recognize where it comes from and why it’s so enduring, but it’s simply not true and hasn’t been for a long time. You’re in no more danger in a Raider parking lot than you are in any other NFL city.
Now Candlestick, that parking lot was the Terrordome.
It’s really really hard to lose a stigma like that. Extremely, unfairly hard. The city of Oakland on the whole is sort of in the same situation. (Unlike Raiders fans) they don’t help themselves much at all, but it’s the same negative stigma that isn’t terribly true anymore but it’s still stuck in the general consciousness.
A hearty “go fuck yourselves!” to the creators of this list.
Yeah, total BS, survey appears to be about how you preconceive the various places rather than one’s actual experiences travelling there.
mrs AV has a 1978 cutlass supreme in her hands that she’s in the process of selling. the other day she goes to los gatos to visit a friend, decides to take said oldsmo for a test. pumping gas in the south bay, an older than 50s gentleman comes up to her.
— “nice car.”
— “yeah, going to sell it soon.”
— “better hurry. second most popular car to get stolen… so don’t take it to oakland.”
— “HUH?”
— “they like those.”
— “they who? i live in oakland.”
— “blacks.”
Groan. So much fail. The most frequently stolen cars are 1990s Hondas and Toyotas.
Also, you don’t have to be black to love Cuttys (AN link warning):
Wait. Is that for real? Is that actually the car she drives?
Yes. And Stomper really lives with Brad Halsey in the football camera shack on top of the third deck.
(I didn’t go to your AN link).
It’s Peanutball, dmoas.
No idea what that is.
It’s a triumph of modern literature, that’s what it is.
Aw, shucks.
Unfortunately my link to the full version is dead now and I don’t have an easy alternative yet, or I’d repost for those who missed it before.
For better or worse, perception is reality. How else do you explain the GOP still being relevant?

A’s considering spot start in Houston for Chavez or Pomeranz; would mean top four starters all pitch in the 8/28-31 series in d’Anaheim.
Somebody learnt something from the Mariners.
After wincing through the hard truths in the Raiders edition, I naturally enjoyed the Why Your Team Sucks Niners edition quite a bit.
it’s like I always say, there’s nothing like a horrific knee injury gif inserted into the middle of an article in slow montion that you can’t stop.
Fuck that.
Thanks, and go As.
They should be named the San Francisco 49ers of Santa Clara via San Mateo.
Is this the part where I bring up the Raiders HQ being in Alameda?
Thanks, and go As.
It’s the part where Fuck the Raiders.
Also, this one:
If Raiders fans can love a near-dead sea monster who only drafts fast players with no football skills and delights in screwing the city of Oakland, I’m not sure why we shouldn’t love a high-roller who put together some of the deepest teams in NFL history by opening his wallet even for backups to backups, and then lied/cheated/stole to keep doing it when the NFL put in a salary cap. The riverboat thing is just a symptom of the same disease.
So basically, if my guy lies, cheats, steals, etc to win, YAY!, but if your guy does the same, FK HIM!
DeBartolo did exactly what A’s fans dream about: opened his wallet, assembled dream teams, and dominated for the better part of a decade. As part of his irrational spending habits, he also bribed people got get a casino open (which is probably how every riverboat casino ever gets approved). Also, the only harm to the Niners from the riverboat thing is that we lost a great owner.
Not sure how that equates to screwing the city of oakland, ruining the coliseum, and drafting fast talentless football players. But if that’s the Raiders fans’ dream, they sure got it!
Now, explain to me again why we shouldn’t love
SteinbrennerDeBartolo?Fixed it for you
Never had any problem understanding why Yankees fans loved Steinbrenner.
And he would have gotten away with it if it hadn’t been for those damn kids!
De Bartolo should’ve brought more Scooby Snacks.
I got some chuckles out of the Broncos one, including my favorite part:
More on Jake Plummer!
Throwing ninja stars at Seahawks fans sounds like a solution, not a problem.
Richards: torn patellar tendon, out 6-9 months. Ouch.
jarrod parker and AJ griffin out for year.
Yes. But OUCH! Impact to the team? Fuck them. Sympathy for the injury on an individual level? Hands down Richards.
cc sabbathia, tanaka, the braves rotation, the entire rangers team
Well, they also lost Skaggs. Pretty sure Richards has the single most gruesome/painful injury of them all so far (non-head injury division).
they lost their best pitcher for 6 starts
Not sure what about that requires trying to convince me others, including us, have had it worse wrt injuries?
It is a skillful defense attorney who can mitigate the impact of a victim’s injuries while not appearing to be an insensitive prick.
So you’re saying Ed has no skillz?
Quite the contrary, if I’m ever on the verge of arrest I’m leading a high speed chase into Ed’s jurisdiction so he can represent me.
just because we saw it. and legs hold us upright. I don’t think it was any less gruesome than an arm injury
more. more gruesome
Those arm injuries were just the result of soreness that wasn’t going to go away. It’s a lot different than your knee randomly not being a knee anymore. It’s much more reminiscent of those handful of pitchers who’s elbows imploded mid pitch.
And, likely, part of early next season, but right now it’s much more important to the end of this season.
I need 3 miracle tickets for Saturday. Can anyone help me out? Thanks in advance <3
So after getting a successful protest, the Gnats still couldn’t beat the Cubs. This despite the fact the Cubs hit only one ball into the outfield after the 4th inning.
no hits, no errors, no balls, 1hbp, no runs… is there a name for that? (besides boston sux?)
The best tax on stupidity ever
As it is in German and only briefly describes the product, lemme explain. The Bio people found the new area of danger – the bar codes. They are actually antennas, you know, and they absorb the radiation out of the environment and redirect it into your food and drink. And then, when additionally activated by the laser scanner, the radiation is even much, much higher. To combat that, you have to draw a line across the bar code. But, you can’t use just any marking device to do that. You MUST use the CodeEx Barcode-harmonizer, because it has some chip in it or something.
Seriously, this is fucking awesome.

I do have fond memories of giving the guy at the GGB an extra ticket from those old commuter ticket books for the next car.
But I actually have some sympathy for the guy breaking the line. Not sure whether I’d do it myself (and I certainly wouldn’t brag about it on my blog), but I am sure I would want to.
tolls are all the same, its a little different.
But yeah, I would not pay it forward in most of my moods. I distrust people’s words too much. I don’t know what the barista is actually going to do with my $3.50.
Not that I particularly care, but I don’t want to get taken.
I’d break it. Easily. And I’d probably not even know I’m breaking it.
My first Christmas in California, I crossed the GGB, stopped at the toll booth, and the guy in front of me, driving a red convertible, handed the toll taker a ticket, then handed her a baguette. Peak Marin.
And yeah, the guy was well within his rights to break the magical Pay It Forward chain, but he gets a CWAA for going on and on about it.
Now, if we could just get someone to prominently put an end the ice bucket challenges…
Yes!
Please!
Yeah, it’s so lame the way they’re raising tens of millions of dollars for researching a cure to a terrible disease. How awful.

This is a fantastic article about the story behind the famous Marichel-Roseboro photo.
http://deadspin.com/what-baseballs-most-famous-brawl-photo-didnt-show-you-1625569916
The author of the book was in SF in July and gave a talk– I missed out on interviewing him because it was when I was in Minnesota.
I’d have to say, after watching a couple minutes of tonight’s Raiders game, that another 4-12 is coming.
Soaker?
I didn’t and don’t buy A’s to Nashville, Brewers to Fresno with Mets staying in Las Vegas. That doesn’t make sense for anyone. That said, it sounds like there’s going to be a pretty good shakeup this year. I still think A’s to Las Vegas is a possibility, and Albuquerque wouldn’t be horrible. This will all be settled in late September.
From the minor league team standpoint if the Grizzlies don’t go after the A’s they are crazy, especially if the Dodgers are off the market. There is always a contingent of A’s fans at games, and the recent run of success has made them come out of the woodwork even more. At the Taco Truck Throwdown last week I saw more A’s caps than ever, and having a winner here would be an even bigger draw.
Now if the A’s dont want to deal with a MiL franchise that is always 1 step from going belly up that throws a wrench into it, but my guess is it would actually be a good relationship. (and this is actually me trying to be objective-I doubt the half season plan I would buy makes a huge difference by itself..)
If the A’s sign with Fresno it would most likely be a 2-year agreement, with an eye toward exploring their opportunities again in the 2016 renewal period. Just thinking about it geographically, and assuming Sacramento is out: A major league park isn’t doable in Portland, but an AAA park might be; there’s not much invested in that Hillsboro short season park. Las Vegas might have a new park in the pipeline by then, and for ease of getting players to the big leagues on short notice Vegas is better than Fresno. The current agreements in Reno and Salt Lake expire in 2016; the Reno ownership might prefer the A’s to the D’Backs but I don’t know about having your AAA team play in a launching pad like that.
Bleg: there was a story on NPR this morning about a local mayor trying to enact a sunshine ordinance to preserve his legacy, but I joined the story too late to know which mayor (and can’t find it online).
Can anyone hepl?
That ray of sunshine would be Chuck Reed, who apparently has done a good job in this respect when he isn’t too busy banging his head against MLB’s wall. You can’t find it online because KQED doesn’t archive newscast stories any more, because the wise ones who run our interactive department say that’s not how people use online media in 2014. If the reporter had had the spare time to write a blog post about it, you would be able to find it that way, but he didn’t. But fortunately it was one of the pieces I quality-checked on Friday.
What on earth is a sunshine ordinance?
LMGTFY:
http://firstamendmentcoalition.org/public-records-2/california-sunshine-ordinances/
That… didn’t exactly explain much. Is it just an increased public information access thing?
Yes. There is a state law on what people can request. That law allows any agency/city/etc. to expand its default rights.
Sunshine ordinances are the colloquial for attempts to do so.
My hero!
