Gray really is gray tonight. At least the A’s have the pantlegs up. No excuse for the Braves not to do the same if they’re going to be wearing throwbacks. At least the A’s might be with their normal batting helmets out of necessity since they’re on the road, but c’mon Braves.

Here we go again.
I hate baseball.
oh 0,m 0,y 0,god, 0, me too
sorry keyboard fail.
Me too
I thought you were trying some sort of Usher inspired OMG reply.
I’ve always hated baseball. Somehow I forgot that for 2 and a half years.
oh good, we suck.
Thanks, and go As.
I’ve seen this movie before.
Well. First place was nice while it lasted.
Melvin should have worn a suit today.
That would have been fantastic.
when it was geren, they said mlb wouldn’t allow it
Would YOU allow anything special for Geren?
Ok, do we sacrifice a chicken, have the team streak, wtf breaks the mojo?
The A’s need to rediscover the type of offensive power that makes Ray Fosse use prepositions and conjunctions.
How do you know that’s an oops? It’s not saying they actually tried to play a game there.
Why?
I blame the batting helmets not matching the uniforms.
The socks are hawt though.
the uniforms were nice
or wearing a fucking flat bill hat with a 1914 throwback uni
Thanks, and go As.
BankAmericard-think of it as money.
Howd that work out for you?
They say the serving size of wassabi and ginger Lays is 18 chips. It should be 18 bags. Best “customer created” flavor yet.
On what planet are any of those flavors edible?
Wassabi and ginger is good. Now every other one they showed I was scared to even consider.
I love putting chips on ham or turkey sandwiches.
Ive heard people say that and also put fries in their burgers. Cant get myself to try them.
Bread
Mayo
Swiss
Ham
Chips
Mustard
Bread
Trust me. I’m fat.
Onion rings on burgers are really yummy.
I also like coleslaw on sammiches.
Had those especially on BBQ burgers.
Dude, you gotta try it. Get really thick chips though.
Surprised they didn’t call a balk on Gray on the 1-2 pitch. His front leg twitched while he was on the rubber.
That bunt by Coco a few innings back was one of the fugliest things this season so far.
You mispelled “everything this past week”.
fuck this shit.
“all in 2014” my fucking ass. at this point just making the playoffs might be tough.
Thanks, and go As.
a short stop or second base peson instead of Ha,,el would have been nice
but why would they try and upgrade the worst position on the team
Thanks, and go As.
Maybe falling into a tie for first will wake the A’s up.
Coco has a new batting hrlmet.
They better get Jimmy Rollins or there will be an “A’s Reacquire Cespedes in Blockbuster Trade for Billy Beane’s Mortal Soul” story in The Onion by September 1st.
How can it only be 3-0 in the 5th inning when this game has been going on for a billion hours already?
This is prime nap time Im giving up to watch the shallow fly showcase.
Life!
VOGT.
Do I have to believe in the A’s to believe in Stephen Vogt?
Hey, whaddaya know? Life!
the hats don’t work but everything else is neat.
[closes door quietly and pretends to come in again.]
I think the hats should be pillbox with lines. I would have bought one of those.
Yeah, maybe.
How good of Sonny to squash hope just as it was creeping back.
I like jingleheimer, but I cant stand him behind the plate.
Wow, Jaso.
Was this mentioned and i missed it?
Dont think so. But I cant think of a reason to ever see him in the green and gold again. You sure as hell leave him offthe playoff roster, and either JCS or Pom could crap the bed as well as he does.
I want to see the idiot on the field.
{buys plane ticket to KC}
I want them to do a throwback game where they rope off the OF and have fans standing out there.
Was it a **real** streaker? Don Sutton: “We have a large crowd here tonight, the only large thing we’ve seen here lately.”
Boom (NSFW? Butt only.)
Oh, and the guy was at the game with his dad.
15 years old and dad didn’t seem to care? Some father.
Oh, also, the picture makes it look like he must have jumped onto the field from the top of the dugout – i.e. over the open area with the stairs -with his drawers still wrapped around his foot.
That photo is particularly awesome.
Needs to spend more time laying out in the sun down at the skinnydippin hole.
And lose the capri pants.
Newspaper photo captions often include sentences like “such-and-such happens while so-and-so looks on.” To me, Coco Crisp absolutely embodies the passivity and listlessness of “looks on” in those images. “Oh, naked guy. Huh.”
I feel the BoSox-like colors that Atlanta is wearing entitle me to hate them more.
they’re still the boston red stockings as far as i’m concerned, so yes.
Pull your pantlegs up, Abad.
at least I can turn on the Earthquakes game at 7:30
Thanks, and go As.
Remember when a two run deficit didn’t feel insurmountable?
and when a 1 game lead seemed impassable.
that’s good.
Please Brandon…
Ok that’s fine. Come on Vogt…
please stephen…
Wow, tough to lay off that pitch with two strikes.
Vogt’s the only A whose helmet matches his uniform.
sigh just missed
I guess that’s enough to make me watch Reddick, Callaspo, Sogard against Kimbrel.
6 pitch inning?
Thanks, and go As.
Where the fuck was that on Thursday, Ryan?
vince made it sound like a harlequin romance of a catch.
Super play by Sogard.
That’s different.
I like it
So of all the outs Kimbrel’s recorded in his career, 56% are by strikeout.
let’s go oakland!
Ok walk -> misplayed bunt -> hilarious fielding error -> Norris PH homer.
GAH
Reddick hit that hard.
Sucks.
Thanks, and go As.
Reddick’s hit the ball really hard today.
on the radio, a little excited for a one step from the wall catch.
Kuiper also got overexcited on that ball, becoming a bad habit for him.
I came back here to complain about Kuiper’s call. That fucker.
“Becoming”? It’s more of “has always been.”
Great AB by Callaspo, really.
Would they trust Parrino to try a steal?
Sogard doesn’t wanna swing
Thanks, and go As.
Well, it should’ve been 2-2 anyway to Sogard.
YUP THAT’S OUR PLAYOFF MIDDLE INFIELD
Thanks, and go As.
No power whatsoever.
Seriously, he squared up 98 mph and it went nowhere.
it’s just a closer that throws 99. What do you expect him to do with a fastball down the middle???
Thanks, and go As.
This team will not make the playoffs. Sorry guys. If they don’t turn SOMETHING the fuck around like yesterday they’re gonna be golfing sooner rather than later.
Thanks, and go As.
fuck.
Crap. Crap darn rats.
No strikeouts for Kimbrel. Moral victory…yeah. Hello to a probable AL West tie very soon.
Time to panic.
Melvin needs to fucking walk into that club house and in front of every one let out a earth shattering yell and flip the spread table over and walk out.
street is due
f/n angeholes being all good humored about this shit.
That 4-game lead done up and gone right quick.
good news! 2 HR.
So now we’re in second place. Awesome.
Roy Scheider’s kids took the boat out even though he forbade it. I foresee problems.
I see that he will need a bigger boat at some point
Now it’s my turn to be calm.
I didn’t see the game, but from the recaps, it sounds like Gray got unlucky with badly-timed dink hits. And at least the A’s were hitting the ball reasonably hard, even if that didn’t result in many runs.
Second place is what they deserve right now. They’re better off as underdogs anyway. And barring a total collapse, they make the play-in game and have a chance.
Angels still have a tough stretch ahead of them with few days off. 39 more games left for the A’s. There’s time to right the ship.
have to beat the angels.
really it comes down to that
And if we don’t beat them now, we’ll have to beat them after we win the wild card game.
The trouble with the “It All Comes Down to the Angel Games” theory is that it assumes that one team will dominate the remaining games. What if they split?
I asm currently playing with this delusion. I mentioned of the book of Faces earlier that it may be better with some rum. Perhaps you all can add some things to it as well.
It was always going to come down to the 10 games against the slegnA. Even if we were still up 3-4 games those 10 are what matter. And I would rather have this happen now then tear through Aug and Sept like the 116 win M’s and go out in the first round. Let’s have it all blow up now and then come back with great vengence and furious anger shortly.
I don’t know know what this means, but I agree.
Probably obvious but everything comes down to the injuries. Hopefully Gentry, Blanks, and Lowrie can get back by the second Angels series. We certainly need Blanks by next weekend (A’s facing 2 of 3 slegnA lefties).
The biggest worry is Coco. He’s clearly not right (.121/.244/.152 since the All Star break). Last year he had a bad stretch as well because of the wrist issue but that was fixed by a cortisone shot. I don’t think any shots can fix the neck issue.
Blanks seems to be on an awfully long rehab assignment.
he’s also not that good.
Thanks, and go As.
Blanks is highly unlikely to be any savior. Getting a healthy Lowrie back, and hitting, is much more important for September and the postseason.
An ineffective Coco due to an injury that won’t heal will be a very tough hurdle to overcome.
Looking at the remaining schedules, both we and the Angels play nothing but bad teams the rest of the way except for each other and the Mariners. We should both see Felix two more times if I’m calculating right, unless the Mariners have a wild card spot locked that last week and decide to rest Felix against the Angels in which case they can go to hell.
The Mariners have a tough run-in the last three weeks of the season. A’s (3), @Angels (4), @ Astros (3), @ Blue Jays (4), Angels (3). Meanwhile the Tigers and Royals are playing a solid diet of Twins, Chisox, and Indians.
Wow, the Rangers are 12-41 (.226) since the night they made Drew Pomeranz punch a chair. That’s been more to the benefit of the Angels than the A’s (0-9 in that span vs. the Angels, 1-4 vs. Oakland). Both teams have 7 games remaining against Texas.
You know what? Fuck it. We’re in a pennant race. Pennant races are fun! And unlike in 2004, we have a wild card cushion. What are the chances that all of the Mariners, Tigers, and Royals finish with a better record than us? I’ll tell you: very little chances.
So let’s enjoy this horrible bullshit!
Yup. ANd I ain’t scurred of a play in game. Lester Gray Samardzija kazmir.
hernandez won’t be on turn.
I am extremely frightened of a play-in game. It’s an elimination game, after all, not exactly something that inspires confidence in a successful outcome.
Pretty sure we lose a play-in game.
Well, the Slegna made up what, four games in seven days? With six left against the Mariners, it is hard to feel any sense of real cushion with the way the A’s have been playing since the all star break.
It may turn out that the Angels – with the best player in baseball, Pujols, and a solid lineup, along with an excellent bullpen and a surprisingly effective starting rotation – are simply the better regular season team. But even if that’s true, that doesn’t mean they necessarily win the division. And even if they do, the A’s would have to deal with the dreaded play-in game and then just play them again in the playoffs anyway.
The A’s beat out the Angels in the division in 2002. Winning the division is more important now because of the play-in game, but it guarantees nothing.
So the Braves didn’t even do striped socks beneath the pants:
http://www.uni-watch.com/2014/08/17/lets-look-at-last-nights-bravesas-throwback-game/
freddy freeman.
What an ass
Seriously
i’ll say it.
this rad trip is korach’s fault
I always blamed Tom Wolfe.
i have over 55 minutes to fix that
so i guess every time aguero or one of those guys manages to score with their regular team i’m gonna have some flashback to when else they coulda done the same thing.
But against Newcastle it hardly counts.
SaCaWa* is not a counting stat.
(* shoulda coulda woulda)
I could have been having a nice breakfast with the A’s and an east coast 1:05 start time. But no, now I get to sit here all day and think up the ways we can have the wheels come further off. And the ESPN narrative all night will be “what has happened in Oakland”. And if Morgan is there like I thought I heard it would be even better. Hey Joe, tell me some more about the book written by a computer named Billy!
I must admit, the 5:05 starting time isn’t doing it for me, given the situation. And the Angels will probably have won by then, so the storyline – and you can’t blame ESPN for this – is the collapsing A’s.
But that’s OK. At least ESPN won’t be making up that part. The A’s need disrespect. They were getting too much respect for much of the season (all the All-Star selections, praise for the trades, the respect because the two AL West titles going into the season, best record in baseball).
Unless something odd happens, Detroit would miss the playoffs if the season ended today.
if the season ended today, wouldn’t that be odd enough?
Quick, someone organize a players’ strike.
Jim Johnson doing Jim Johnson things.
game over in texas.
*click?*
not really. i plan to continue commenting.
nice slide rosales.
and i say that both sarcastically and not.
Goofy-looking but reasonably effective. So, Rosales.
he was begging to be tagged out on the fly with all that altitude.
And capped it off with a Jemile for effect.
Almost ate it rounding third there too.
“CL”eaning the guts of the dryer with a vacuum cleaner is a boring prospect i’ll alleviate with random check ins but staying to give a damn about texas’ tootblans is gonna make me s”ICK.”
Milone only got 4 outs today. 7 runs (6 earned) allowed to KC.
Adam Rosales is hitting .304 with an OPS of .962. Yeah, I know. Small sample size.
angels get a break, after a bad throw by calhoun, odor has his arm up and slides into a tag
What a dick Arancibia
he catches line drive 3rd out at first, puts it in his bare hand. as he runs to the dugout someone flips him the ball to throw around next inning. He catches it in his glove, replacing the throw around ball. He then flips the throw around ball into crowd.
Huh?
instead of throwing a game used ball into the stands. he threw the batting practice ball.
Sure, that ball was game used at some time, but the ball he caught was game used and seen by the recipient
I don’t understand what the second ball was. Does the first baseman hang onto a batting practice ball for the next inning toss-around while his team is batting?
someone in the dugot toss one to him for that purpose
But are you saying that generally the first baseman gets a ball to warm up with next inning as he’s walking off the field at the end of this inning? I never knew that.
yes
Yep, it’s just one of those customary things. Toss a ball right as he’s coming into the dugout and you’re not looking for one as you’re going back out. Watch for it at a game sometime.
It’s somewhat superstitious too. Throwing *that* ball out to the crowd before it’s used for it’s purpose generally is thought to be bad luck.
way to waste a good outing rangers
Against santiago no less
They’ve played just well enough to lose. Much like yesterday and the day before.
The Angels seem to win every game against the Rangers. This is what you need to do, beat up on the weaklings, and the Angels have done that very well.
This would be 10 in a row.
It turns out that it’s tough to beat a team 10 times in a row.
I will say what I will about ron washington, but I will also say I like his enthusim
Bad manager, good teacher, cool guy
Come back to Oakland and work with our infielders again.
Send him to Midland next year to work with our prospects. He wouldn’t even have to move.
you mean our infielder
well that was one hell of a nap. i wake up and now somehow we have an infielder?!?
Yes, but he’s 62 years old with a coke bust on his rap sheet.
i’m incredibly hard.
Jesus what a terrible strike call.
Time to blow one, Huston.
He’s tired.
here’s hope.
Let’s go Rosey. Walk this ish off.
I’ll be damned. It’s a tie. C’mon, Rosales!
Watch Rosales beat the Angels.
ex A against ex A. will the curse implode on itself?
boomtown rosie. neat.
♥ you Rosey
Good ole Suck Ass.
Done and done. A’s back in sole possession of first place pending tonight’s outcome.
Scioscia is running Street into the ground, hopefully.
Yes! The Angels blowing that bases loaded, no out situation in the 8th came back to haunt them. Rosey!
First place! Woo!
This
It’s been a bad road trip. But if Lester can do what he was acquired to do and the A’s are still in first place on the flight home, that would be a nice boost.
Not gonna be a teAse tonight. Fuck.
