            It would look beautiful sitting in your driveway, not running.

    I had forgotten how absurd Gomes looks at the plate.

      I don’t think anyone has a shorter, more abbreviated follow-through swing than he does.

    somebody on KC’s feed must have misspoke. said that donaldson had his first hit in 20, 21 AB? granted, i’m groggy from a nap and hopped up on anti-B’s.

    JD should’ve been on third…would’ve scored on Gomes’s hit…

      He has been running very not well recently.

      a 7′ 10″ wingspan is that much slower to turn around?

    Is the runner on third or not? Graphic says second.

  8. lenscrafters Aug 13,2014 5:30 pm

    That was strike 3.

    • Glorious Mundy Aug 13,2014 5:30 pm || Up

      Looked a little low? The 1-2 pitch to Norris in the top was a worse call.

      • mikeA Aug 13,2014 5:33 pm || Up

        It was a strike on gameday, and I just by my eye I think that’s a strike 80-90% of the time.

    • lenscrafters Aug 13,2014 5:31 pm || Up

      whew, strike 4 made it moot.

    • mikeA Aug 13,2014 5:31 pm || Up

      Small strike zone should favor us.

  9. Glorious Mundy Aug 13,2014 5:33 pm

    Heads up that the best-rotation-evar Tigers have someone named Buck Farmer on the mound tonight.

  10. mikeA Aug 13,2014 5:34 pm

    I like Nate, but I’m ready for other tall guy, started writing that before the dp…

  11. mikeA Aug 13,2014 5:40 pm

    He even gets calls against the A’s.

    • Glorious Mundy Aug 13,2014 5:41 pm || Up

      OK, that time Kaz got badly squeezed.

    • Glorious Mundy Aug 13,2014 5:44 pm || Up

      Norris looked pissed at the end of the inning.

  12. mikeA Aug 13,2014 5:43 pm

    I think that was the first successful 4-6-3 of Callaspo’s career.

  13. lenscrafters Aug 13,2014 5:45 pm

    Darvish -> DL with elbow issues. Poor Rangers…

    • Glorious Mundy Aug 13,2014 5:46 pm || Up

      So, who are they getting with that top pick?

      • andeux Aug 14,2014 9:08 am || Up

        Rockies are a game worse and are now without Carlos Gonzalez and Tulo. And Anderson, of course. OTOH, they get to play the rest of the NL West.
        Should be an exciting race down the stretch.

  15. sslinger Aug 13,2014 6:02 pm

    When did Infante play for the A’s?

  16. Soaker Aug 13,2014 6:04 pm

    Yep, standard Vargas start vs. the A’s. I’m surprised Ervin Santana is pitching tonight. You’d expect him to go to the Atlanta pitching coach and say “Dude, check my record against Oakland, let’s juggle the rotation so I can face them.”

  17. Glorious Mundy Aug 13,2014 6:06 pm

    Kauffman Stadium looks really pretty, but that big Tyranno-vision scoreboard is quite out of scale with the rest of the place.

  21. vignette17 Aug 13,2014 6:10 pm

    I want no part of the Royals pen trailing runs. Where is the offense from yesterday?

    • Glorious Mundy Aug 13,2014 6:11 pm || Up

      Vargas’d

    • lenscrafters Aug 13,2014 6:22 pm || Up

      Vargas is a good pitcher. Guthrie and Chen aren’t.

      • vignette17 Aug 13,2014 6:36 pm || Up

        Guthrie is projected for a 4.51 ERA RoS. Vargas 4.39.

        • vignette17 Aug 13,2014 6:37 pm || Up

          Chen 4.52.

        • lenscrafters Aug 13,2014 7:05 pm || Up

          RoS projections based on 8 projected starts for Vargas and Guthrie and 28 innings for Chen are pretty close to meaningless. Their overall projections (Vargas 3.88 ERA, Guthrie 4.46 ERA, Chen 5.80 ERA) are a better read into the quality of pitchers they are.

          • vignette17 Aug 13,2014 7:29 pm || Up

            Their overall projections include their stats already this year. So yes, Vargas will almost certainly finish the year with the best ERA. But the RoS project their talent going forward. And they view them all very similarly.

            • lenscrafters Aug 13,2014 9:38 pm || Up

              No RoS projections aren’t good measures of talent. They measure what they explicitly say they measure: projections of production over an increasingly smaller sample size throughout the season. As the projected sample gets smaller as the season wears on, you run into statistical issues when you try to extrapolate that into a projection of true talent.

              As for Vargas, it seems like another issue is that ZiPS projected him for a 4.71 ERA/5.01 FIP at the beginning of the year. If you think that projection is reasonable, then sure he looks like Guthrie or Chen. I don’t, because he hasn’t come close to being that bad since before becoming a full time starter five years ago.

              • vignette17 Aug 13,2014 11:01 pm || Up

                Interesting link. Never thought of how limiting the sample size combining with rounding errors could provide such a large range.

                I still see in Vargas a guy who’s xFIP has hovered throughout his entire career around 4.5. He’s had lower than average HR rates but he’s also played in SEA and LAA. The dude has killed the A’s but I simply don’t see a good pitcher in there. I see an average one.

  22. dmoas Aug 13,2014 6:17 pm

    How the fuck was that a strike. It was at his fucking shins.

  23. AV Aug 13,2014 6:21 pm

    Is there any remaining trace of the old African-American barbecue joints in Oakland/Emeryville (Flint’s, Doug’s, McCoy’s back in the day) or has that all been gentrified out of the area?

  40. vignette17 Aug 13,2014 11:15 pm

    A’s record by opponent:

    WSN 3-0
    MIA 3-0
    MIN 6-1
    HOU 8-5
    LAA 6-3
    SFG 3-1
    BAL 4-2
    CLE 4-2
    NYY 4-2
    TB 4-2
    TEX 7-5
    BOS 4-3
    TOR 4-3
    CHW 2-1
    NYM 1-1
    SEA 6-7
    KC 2-4
    DET 2-5

    For as bad as the A’s have seemed to us, no matter how you slice it, this has been an impressive season for the A’s. They’ve only lost 2 season series (although they will have to beat Seattle to not make it 3).

      Plus when we sweep the Tigers in four in the ALCS, that’ll sort of make up for losing the regular season series.

      We need our first half offense to come back.
