    • Ben Folds' Nuts Jul 22,2014 7:58 pm || Up

      Non-reviewable, I guess. And on the replay, it’s not 100% cut-and-dried that Altuve interfered with Freiman’s reception of the ball. Like you can make the (wrong) argument that since he was already past Freiman’s glove hand, he didn’t interfere.

      • dmoas Jul 22,2014 7:59 pm || Up

        Replay showed that he made contact with the glove just as the ball was hitting it. So 100% interference.

            runner at first, batter Altuve hits the ball off Kazmir deflects to donaldson. he picks it up throws wide to first. Freiman comes off base to field ball. ALtuve who ran on the grass the whole way, collides with Frieman causing him to miss the ball. both runners advance. 2nd 3rd no outs.

            Carter eventually singles them in. Argument with the umpires not reviewed.

      just saw it on my phone (its not on the regualr internet highlights). At least the Houson people didn’t show an angle that looked like interference.

      they showed a lot of angles that looked like it was a shitty play by frieman. In fact every angle showed frieman trying to hold the bag when he shouldn’t. I didn’t see any contact.

      but that is the houston feed.

      I have $5. No I don\'t.
      • Glorious Mundy Jul 23,2014 7:03 am || Up

        It definitely didn’t look like interference at full speed. If he was out of the baseline it wasn’t by much.

        • Ben Folds' Nuts Jul 23,2014 8:20 am || Up

          He was way out of the baseline and he was out of it in such a fashion as to have interfered with how JD made the throw and how Freiman received it, but he did not, in my estimation, actually make contact with the glove or ball. But the rule doesn’t require that. It only requires that he have interfered, in the umpire’s judgment, with the reception of the ball by the fielder. This should be a reviewable play, because clearly the umpires didn’t have a very good view of it.

          • 5Aces Jul 23,2014 8:31 am || Up

            Agreed on this. I think Ed’s point above though is the part that screws it up. The fact that Frieman tried to stay on the bag was the issue. He should have came off and used 6’7″ to turn and tag. Even if he missed the odds are much better that we get out of the inning with less than 2 scored.

            Camelot sure fell apart, didn't it? -Steve McCatty
            • Ben Folds' Nuts Jul 23,2014 9:30 am || Up

              I think every first baseman or sort-of first baseman we currently have on the 25-man roster screws that play up, because you’re not expecting to contend with a runner. Daric Barton might make that play, but if the runner creates a situation where the only guy who makes the play is a top-flight defensive first baseman, it’s gotta be interference. So yeah, it’s a poor play on Freiman’s part but it’s not a situation that should occur in the first place.

          • dmoas Jul 23,2014 9:50 am || Up

            They did a close up on the glove and you can see that he made contact with the glove just as the ball made contact with the glove.

          • Glorious Mundy Jul 23,2014 10:13 am || Up

            OK, I found the CSN replays (no link, I just went to the spot in the mlb.tv replay). He was definitely way out of the baseline until veering back toward the base at the last moment. I still don’t think it’s interference, though, even if he touched Freiman’s glove, because a) he wasn’t trying to avoid a tag, and b) I don’t think you can say that he intentionally interfered with a thrown ball. It was just a bang-bang play, and he was basically at the base when the ball arrived.

            Here’s the relevant part of Rule 7.08:

            Any runner is out when —
            (a) (1) He runs more than three feet away from his baseline to avoid being tagged unless his action is to avoid interference with a fielder fielding a batted ball. A runnerÂ’s baseline is established when the tag attempt occurs and is a straight line from the runner to the base he is attempting to reach safely; or (2) after touching first base, he leaves the baseline, obviously abandoning his effort to touch the next base;

            (b) He intentionally interferes with a thrown ball; or hinders a fielder attempting to make a play on a batted ball;

            • andeux Jul 23,2014 10:24 am || Up

              Wrong rule.

              6.05 A batter is out when—

              (k) In running the last half of the distance from home base to first base, while the ball is being fielded to first base, he runs outside (to the right of) the three-foot line, or inside (to the left of) the foul line, and in the umpire’s judgment in so doing interferes with the fielder taking the throw at first base, in which case the ball is dead; except that he may run outside (to the right of) the three-foot line or inside (to the left of) the foul line to avoid a fielder attempting to field a batted ball;

                Hmm, OK. I’m an idiot. I still think the call was correct though, because I don’t think his being out of the baseline interfered with the catch.

                • Ben Folds' Nuts Jul 24,2014 12:26 am || Up

                  So you’re saying that if he runs on the basepath, Freiman still doesn’t catch that ball and keep his foot on the bag?

                well, I think it should be reviewable, but I am not convinced it was interference.
