The A’s had 5 of the first 90 picks that year but didn’t exactly prosper. They took 1B Sean Doolittle with their first supplemental pick; the others were James Simmons, Corey Brown, Desme and Josh Horton.
I think they need a rule that you can wear any sort of protection to the plate, but anything non-standard, jersey + helmet, if you get hit on it, it won’t be considered a HBP.
Nowhere near that disappointing. Going down 1-2-3 is at least timely. A disappointing Council half inning includes an injury, a replay review, and a bench-clearing brawl involving only one team throwing punches at its own players.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
It looked like he was trying to flex his back a little bit, but given the history that could have been a way of trying to shake out some cobwebs. There was nothing on that specific pitch block that should have caused an injury.
I took the Marlins Park tour when I was in Miami over a year ago. It was February and the field was torn up so it was hard to get any sense of the game experience. The neon green, oddball angles all over (fences, scoreboard), fish tank…it seemed like they went overboard to be goofy. Little Havana isn’t the greatest neighborhood, not the worst either, but it seemed like a place where you pull into the parking garage, go straight to the game, then leave. There didn’t appear to be any commercial development around the park that would induce people to show up a couple hours early. It was only a year old at that time though, so a little early to pass judgment about neighborhood upgrades.
Talk on the radio was that there’s just plain nothing around the place, which felt odd since the Coliseum is pretty much the same. That’s why I feel so strongly that the area around it needs to be developed up if a new ballpark ever ends up built on the same site.
Could have been a lot worse… Bases loaded no outs, Angels only got 1, last out was very nearly a 2 run triple. I would have thought Vargas would be an ideal guy to protect a big lead, fly ball pitcher, no BBs. Didn’t work out that way.
So A.J. Pierzynski was ejected from a game a couple weeks ago for turning to one of the rookie umpires after ball four, asking for a new baseball and saying “Give me one you can see”? I mean, A.J. is a jerk but that’s a pretty good one.
Staying in Bakersfield tonight on the way to Las Vegas, and I caught most of this one through the MLB At Bat app. Since I set it up for my tablet, which is wifi only, I just turned the phone’s hotspot thing on, had that connected while I drove, and plugged the tablet in to my stereo’s aux input. Just as good as having it on the radio.
This entire discussion seems a bit overly sentimental. Yes, Bob Welch was a great dude by all accounts and put in some great work for the A’s, but baseball is not funereal. Is Bob Welch offended that we’re not wearing a patch and retiring his number? Is his family offended?
If he’d died at age 80 I’d agree with you. The issue here is that so many of the current fans saw him pitch and be a big contributor to the most recent period of greatness in A’s baseball. I don’t know that a patch is necessary, but maybe at least a marker and his uniform number on the outfield fence at the Coliseum, and Freiman would be just as happy with any number as long as it’s on a big league uniform.
He was a member of our last WS championship, he was known within the current team’s clubhouse since he was an advisor or whatever during Spring Training, and he was close with several current coaching/front office staff. So, no, I don’t think it’s overly sentimental. And it has little to do with his family or potential offensiveness of them.
And I know this may sound crass, but that team is getting honored in like 2 weeks and it would have been expected he would be there. All the more reason they should have a patch or something. I think James mentioned on Twitter maybe waiting until the ceremony-that just seems wrong, but I guess I would like that less than nothing at all.
A couple others speculated the A’s may be waiting to do something at the reunion. That wasn’t my idea.
And I don’t think it has anything to do with whether or not someone deserves it, if anyone in his family will be offended if it doesn’t happen, etc. It’s pretty much standard practice that teams do a memorial patch when someone important to the team’s history passes. They did it for Catfish Hunter, and of course Bill King. They even wore a patch for the OPD. This year the Orioles are wearing a patch for Tom freaking Clancy, who was an investor in the team.
So no, I don’t think it’s out of the ordinary to expect a patch for Bob Welch. He was part of those great late-80s teams, was part of their last World Series winner, and we all know what he did in 1990.
And the patch would only be for half the season. Not like they’re retiring his number (especially with Freiman now wearing it).
In the grand scheme of things the expense to do the patches is nothing, and it shows more than just putting out a press release expressing regret a guy died.
I’m OK with or without a Bob Welch patch. And there’s no reasonably equivalency of grief or mourning of course. But Oakland losing four cops on one horrible day affected people in the East Bay dramatically. Bob Welch passing at home in retirement is not really comparable.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
Oakland police officers killed.
Somebody on ** says police officers are “heroes”.
PT says “Not all police officers are heroes.”
PT is banned.
mb and some others are the first exodus and start FK.
I’m pretty sure mb had left earlier, over some different issues (the headline stuff mentioned below), and I think (but am less sure) he was already working on starting FK.
But the PT banning was the last straw for several others of us.
PT was never permabanned-or if he was it was during the MikeV saga. If you search his posts you will see a note about it. But he got like a 30 day suspension for the whole affair. And, much like with Mike, it was outside of all the “normal process”.
Funny thing though-I just went back through his old comments to see if I could find the article in question and they aren’t there. It goes from July 2008 straight to Aug 2011. Thought police must have already erased the negativity of April ’09.
The MikeV saga is responsible for one of my all-time favorite comments. People were riffing on “Wolff lied he never tried,” and someone–I think it was James–said “MIKEV MISSING DETAIL, NO VALID EMAIL.” For some reason that still makes me laugh out loud.
The 30 day thing was after the fact. Initially it was ban but because of the uproar they pulled the “Well we weren’t serious, it’s um, more of a suspension, he can blah blah, suck my dick, blah blah kiss my ass, blah.”
You know the things people don’t like about Nico? Literally, every single thing people don’t like about Nico? Alright, now take away his shitty, irritating sense of humor and replace it with no sense of humor, and a bunch of whiny rants about how no one appreciates her, and also complete irrational hatred of any A’s player who makes a mistake.
I don’t think there was really any straw that broke the camel’s back, other than mb leaving, which was a pretty huge straw. I think the main impetus for most of the founders was just being sick of N*** (and various other people) and his bullshit, along with the direction the site as a whole was taking.
Pretty much. Most of you guys know for a good long while I pretty much backed TPTB in most anything, especially because for a bit I was on the “inside” and was part of a number of discussions about various people who we felt were intentionally trying to make the place worse. I think a lot more patience was being used then, and it was only later on that I “woke up.” But for a while, I think people tried to be as fair as they could be until Nico just went off the rails. It’s made worse that BBG seems to have gone the same route.
It’s along the lines of saying the civil war was fought over slavery when the truth is more intricately complicated and it’s just easier to point to a symptom of the cause rather than attempting articulate the complexity of the cause.
For me, I had been pissed off about the shit PT constantly took (and then got blamed for responding to), and that thread was what pissed me off enough to dig into coding FK 1.0.
That said, I went back for various things until the MikeV debacle.
"There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want"
there was the OPD thread that PaulThomas questioned and then there were politics rules. that was the same time that the Yahoo! headline rules came and the exodus of the founders here.
Police officers=heros I believe was what people decided the issue was. (It was of course way more complicated than that but if you explain you might lose yahooligans after that catchy headline caught them…)
You know what’s always made no sense to me about the whole “we have to make sure AN is palatable to casual readers” thing? SBN lets its various “blogfathers” (stupid fucking term) basically run their sites however they see fit. But somehow AN was under a mandate to cater to non-regular readers?
“Nobody can make anyone feel unwelcome, except you can totally make women feel unwelcome. The only women who are allowed on AN are SoCal Republicans like BBG.”
I fully realize that I can be a super dick; I am a super contrarian and not only do I have far more opinions that most, I also have far less regard for social niceties about not expressing my opinion when it conflicts with others or not insisting that they defend their beliefs to my satisfaction. That being said, none of the CG were enforced if something totally personal and out of line was said to me… and the same went for PT.
In play, run(s)! Talk dirty to me gamecast, talk dirty. - Nevermoor
Right. The constant “I think 1+1=3” then “No, 1+1 = 2 and here’s why” then “STFU DFA you condescending prick, I said ‘think’ so I don’t care” followed by scolding of DFA crap drove me nuts.
"There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want"
Probably, but it just works off some of the extra Karma you had from Donaldson.
I was looking back the other day for the OPD blow up and I could not believe how sure PT was that Parker was not as good as Cahill. Makes me feel less bad for being clueless.
I thought Cahill was shit and I thought getting an injury prone player who hadn’t proven himself after TJS could end up with him hurting himself… which it did.
In play, run(s)! Talk dirty to me gamecast, talk dirty. - Nevermoor
“Green and yellow”–The non-Jeff Conine announcer for the Marlins, referring to the A’s colors.
Damnit! I mean, I’ll delete mine.
I should probably delete mine, since yours was better.
Nah, you got first dibs. I’ll get plenty of other chances to bolster my site-leading game thread winning %.
I feel like their pitcher is coming set twice.
He’s trying to buy a vowel.
The guy for the O’s comes to a set three or four times. Balks every fking pitch, but never gets called on it.
Injury delay? Who’s hurt?
The Moss line drive was straight back at the pitcher DeSclafani, who appeared to get nailed in the side.
Had to have hit something fatty cause that was smoked.
Mmmmm, smoked fatty!
A’s drafted Father Desme two picks before Stanton in ’07.
The A’s had 5 of the first 90 picks that year but didn’t exactly prosper. They took 1B Sean Doolittle with their first supplemental pick; the others were James Simmons, Corey Brown, Desme and Josh Horton.
Really the A’s should stop drafting Tar Heels. Horton and Carignan did not exactly follow in Walt Weiss’s footsteps.
I really didn’t like the simmons pick
In fairness, we probably would have ruined Stanton somehow.
I think they need a rule that you can wear any sort of protection to the plate, but anything non-standard, jersey + helmet, if you get hit on it, it won’t be considered a HBP.
How about codpieces?
Under the jersey or over?
jersey?
Well that inning was as disappointing as the Oakland City Council.
Nowhere near that disappointing. Going down 1-2-3 is at least timely. A disappointing Council half inning includes an injury, a replay review, and a bench-clearing brawl involving only one team throwing punches at its own players.
You forgot to mention fan interference and a bad decision by the commissioner.
Jeff Mathis is still a major leaguer?
HOLY…he’s out!
Live it looked like there was absolutely no way he was out. I mean, he actually beat the ball to the plate, let alone the tag itself.
i giggled.
i mean when it happened. confused a lot of people because we were all watching different things on mute.
That was a really shitty slide, but that just adds another notch in Cespedes belt. Gold Glove is coming his way this year.
Please don’t swing the bat. You’re more likely to hit into a double play rather than a hit.
Jesse Chavez aspires to a career batting average of .025. Which is .025 higher than his current career average.
Coco would make a great flag football player.
What happened to BEARD?
Hurt his back…
It looked like he was trying to flex his back a little bit, but given the history that could have been a way of trying to shake out some cobwebs. There was nothing on that specific pitch block that should have caused an injury.
backs rarely need something specific to act up… theyre just crotchety
not a good sign from a 25 year old
These marlins unis do have some nice rainbow-y pride accents.
LOL at that ridiculous curved wall in center field.
Wow, that weird curved portion of the outfield wall gave that one a wicked carom.
I took the Marlins Park tour when I was in Miami over a year ago. It was February and the field was torn up so it was hard to get any sense of the game experience. sounding good josh
Feeling good, Louis!
great ab Chuy
grand slam infante, 7-2 Royals over angels
3rd inning. Royals have vargas
Come on Jesse…
It looks like Jesse wore himself out on that long at bat in the top of the inning.
vunce, when a batter hits an RBI single, I don’t care that its a cutter. tell me its a hit, an RBI, then its a cutter
part vince part dunce?
i followed every step of the flubbed catch call. but then he signed off the 5–5 inning by saying the A’s got the lead.
and now looking at the replay with his call added, i see the throw to third wasn’t late. it was off line. they lie to me all the time.
ridiculous
i liked this game better 5 minutes ago
unfuckingbelievable
seriously what happened? i missed about 2 innings.
Marlins had one inning where everything went their way. Lots of dinks and well placed balls.
Otero is determined to get the bases cleared.
Incredibly shitty luck for the A’s today.
It’s stupid.
we don’t have to worry about pittsburgh
:(
they were winning last i heard…
still, rox and vinny sound super glum.
And now the Royals are melting down.
Royals finally get out of it clinging to a two run lead.
Could have been a lot worse… Bases loaded no outs, Angels only got 1, last out was very nearly a 2 run triple. I would have thought Vargas would be an ideal guy to protect a big lead, fly ball pitcher, no BBs. Didn’t work out that way.
So we’re going to showcase Jim Johnson in the bottom of the 8th?
Whoa…
WOW!
The Marlins defense did not handle that very well at all.
It was Cook and Mathis was on the Blue Jays…
This sucks.
So many hanging sliders…
Huh, Frieri for Grilli is an interesting trade, just saw that.
here is our guy we don’t like, lets have yours.
the Pirates love xFIP which Frieri has great marks in… plus with the potential for longer control it makse sense for them.
The Royals have a bunch of good relievers, not sure why they’re not using them. They are going to blow the game this inning.
Should be able to steal on this guy.
Please score here. I do not want to see Gregerson pitching to Stanton.
Don’t miss this opportunity, ladies.
Looked safe, but I bet they don’t overturn it.
“No indisputable evidence, call stands” I suspect.
I’m glad I’m wrong so frequently.
Really fking sick of Gallego’s nonsense.
ha!
Wow. That’s unbelievable.
Did not think we were going to get that call.
Good for them, it was like 97% clear he was safe, stupid to do the cop out when it’s like that.
Joe West was hilariously reluctant to take off his headset.
Vogt is seriously awesome.
Can not send Vogt back down.
The A’s are working. Nine to five.
Very nice to beat up on their closer in the opening game of the series.
give up, marlins. i need to go.
Just Doo it.
It wasn’t too pretty for a few innings there but wound up being a sweet win.
Donaldson looking good, Lowrie looking good, even Reddick looking good.
Chavez looking like a starter with a hard luck W/L record.
yAy!!
Good fucking Jesus, how terrible can one guy be at play-by-play?
We won!
As did the Royals!
Royals hang on and win after taking mikeA’s advice to use their best relievers.
So A.J. Pierzynski was ejected from a game a couple weeks ago for turning to one of the rookie umpires after ball four, asking for a new baseball and saying “Give me one you can see”? I mean, A.J. is a jerk but that’s a pretty good one.
same guy that blew the Napoli foul tip
Admittedly I laughed at that one too.
Bad inning to blow the lead, but nice finish.
Why would you just not install it on your phone and skip the hotspot thing which
I’m just kind of cheating with an app instead of signing up for a hotspot thing through Verizon.
Sean Doolittle threw 71.3% (154/216) of his pitches for strikes through the end of April. Since then? 77.1% strikes (246/319).
Sean Doolittle has allowed 1 hit in 13 IP this month, plus 0 walks and 20 strikeouts. That’s a WHIP of 0.077.
That’s also a .025 average against this month.
And still a .067 avg against after tonight.
Bad timing, James.
its official. reddick to DL, frieman batting 5th.
They’re actually issuing Bob Welch’s #35 now, three weeks after his death? That’s really lame.
Worse, I still don’t see a patch.
If there was a patch there’d have been no question that the jersey # would not be issued. Issuing the jersey now just seems callous.
The fact there’s been no jersey patch actually bothers me.
Sorry, that did read like I thought it was your idea. I knew it wasn’t but weak typing and all…
And yeah,no offense to OPD, but if they get one Welch should no questions asked.
And the patch would only be for half the season. Not like they’re retiring his number (especially with Freiman now wearing it).
In the grand scheme of things the expense to do the patches is nothing, and it shows more than just putting out a press release expressing regret a guy died.
Another selfish for me reason: When I get a jersey for this year and put the patch on it to remember the WS championship we will have…
(thought I was going to do the same thing with the King patch on a Big Hurt home white. Oh well.
I’m OK with or without a Bob Welch patch. And there’s no reasonably equivalency of grief or mourning of course. But Oakland losing four cops on one horrible day affected people in the East Bay dramatically. Bob Welch passing at home in retirement is not really comparable.
I bet there is a written policy on patches. Or at least If I were in charge there would be
The good thing about the OPD patch was the FK fest it unleased at **
What kind of FK fest?
I think it was the “straw that broke the camel’s back” and led to the founding of FK.
Really? Don’t think I caught that.
Oakland police officers killed.
Somebody on ** says police officers are “heroes”.
PT says “Not all police officers are heroes.”

Oh, yes. Now I remember that.
Sort of.
I’m pretty sure mb had left earlier, over some different issues, and I think (but am less sure) he was already working on starting FK.

I want to know how this got past the duplicate comment filter
Weird, I thought I edited (to add a read-the-thread-andeux parenthetical), but somehow it ended up as a separate comment.
alert nm! we have a security breech (breach?)
I think MB went because of the headline crap, not being able to use Monkeyball official headlines because it might make the Yahoos nervous.
Wait, that’s what got PT banned from there? Jesus. That fucking place.
a couple of times “suspended” or some such nonsense.
PT was never permabanned-or if he was it was during the MikeV saga. If you search his posts you will see a note about it. But he got like a 30 day suspension for the whole affair. And, much like with Mike, it was outside of all the “normal process”.

I don’t think I was clever enough to have thought of that then, but then again I did forget the OPD bit.
It was either you or LoneStranger, but in my memory it’s definitely you.
I’ll take it.
The 30 day thing was after the fact. Initially it was ban but because of the uproar they pulled the “Well we weren’t serious, it’s um, more of a suspension, he can blah blah, suck my dick, blah blah kiss my ass, blah.”
The FK meta-thread, if rehashing that history is your thing.
It does include my favorite my comment.
Holy shit, a lot of pro-BBG comments in that thread.
BBG had never done anything to particularly upset me up to that point. Whatever has happened subsequently I’m ignorant about.
She’s a female Nico is what happened subsequently.
how so?
You know the things people don’t like about Nico? Literally, every single thing people don’t like about Nico? Alright, now take away his shitty, irritating sense of humor and replace it with no sense of humor, and a bunch of whiny rants about how no one appreciates her, and also complete irrational hatred of any A’s player who makes a mistake.
That’s BBG.
yeah i remember the rants and just thinking A) demand to be paid or B) resign
Jesus, that was an eternity ago. Ed still had cable.
I think part of it was that if tca was going to leave it could only be because she replaced him. So she was sort of our John Kerry.
Then she went full-metal TCA during the MikeV stuff, which was the last time I logged into the site.
Basically the result nobody wanted.
I don’t think there was really any straw that broke the camel’s back, other than mb leaving, which was a pretty huge straw. It’s an empty excuse.
But then, they went full-on with the “nobody can make anybody feel unwelcome here and no meta either!” angle.
“Nobody can make anyone feel unwelcome, except you can totally make women feel unwelcome. The only women who are allowed on AN are SoCal Republicans like BBG.”
Also too: make sure you make PT/DFA/etc as uncomfortable as possible!
I fully realize that I can be a super dick; I am a super contrarian and not only do I have far more opinions that most, I also have far less regard for social niceties about not expressing my opinion when it conflicts with others or not insisting that they defend their beliefs to my satisfaction. Is it wrong that I take great happiness in Cahill failing as as he has?
Probably, but it just works off some of the extra Karma you had from Donaldson.
I was looking back the other day for the OPD blow up and I could not believe how sure PT was that Parker was not as good as Cahill. Makes me feel less bad for being clueless.
i love stuff like that.
of course, i had no faith in moss
I ha(d)ve no faith in Reddick.
But then again he pulled a Pennington and had a fluke good first year obscuring the suckage that the numbers suggested.
I remember those conversations.
you were right
ive also been wrong a bunch too espinosa ryan sweeny etc etc
That was the weirdest offseason, wasn’t it?
I thought Cahill was shit and I thought getting an injury prone player who hadn’t proven himself after TJS could end up with him hurting himself… which it did.
Wait… you know that I argued till the cows come home that Cahill sucked right?
Yeah, can’t believe I forgot that. Then again, that’s how my memory is sometimes.
Something being standard practice doesn’t necessarily make not doing it callous and shitty.
