Game 23: Friday night lights deep in the throat of Texas 508

Cespedes is “very much day-to-day” per Melvin via Sluss-tweet, so Moss moves out to left field and Release Candidate 10 gets one of his occasional starts against a right-handed pitcher.

Crisp CF, Jaso C, Lowrie SS, Donaldson 3B, Moss LF, Callaspo DH, Reddick RF, Barton 1B, Sogard 2B. JCS is on the hill for the Athletics, while Brad Peacock throws at Lowrie and the rest of the Oakland batters for Bo Porter’s 7-16 club.

Almost 4 weeks into the regular season and it’s been snowing here all day. A 22 of Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout should have me nice and toasted, er, toasty, a few innings into the game.

    The trouble with these Astro games is that I feel like they have to win all of them, or it’s a lousy series, because the other AL West teams will get their shots too.

    • FreeSeatUpgrade Apr 25,2014 4:38 pm || Up

      Even with that higher bar we seem to be beating the Stros more than the other AL West teams do (knock wood). To the extent that motivation matters at all, its kinda nice that Houston has the Texas rivalry thing going vs the Rangers.

    Griffin to undergo Tommy John surgery.

    Not exactly a shock but nevertheless, pretty devastating news.

    Was there a reason that this could have happened immediately after last season? It just seems that for these forearm/elbow injuries that “require” rest, they never actually require rest and almost always lead to TJs.

    Failing to upgrade the rotation (Hudson) when you knew Griffin was injured (and likely knew something was off with Parker) is looking more and more questionable.

      No surgeon likes to cut at the first sign of soreness. And if they do, you should find a new surgeon. It’s one thing if there were a history, but as far as I’m aware, it was the first time he felt it.

        Or just start for Straily and have Straily back him up in the pen until he’s ready to go long. Then send Straily down to AAA.

        • brian.only Apr 25,2014 5:24 pm || Up

          How would sending Straily down help, you’d rather have Milone?
          Straily’s perifs (minors and majors) have looked better than Pomeranz, who’s seriously lucking out at the moment- 100. LOB%, .200 BABIP.

      • critter Apr 25,2014 5:18 pm || Up

        Sorry to go O/T here but I was hoping someone could clarify something for me. I can’t get A’s games on the radio here so I was thinking of getting a cheap blue tooth speaker and subscribing to gameday audio. This way I could listen while working outside or hanging out on the porch. But to justify the cost I’d also like my friend to be able to listen through my account on his phone while he’s selling plants (when I’m able to watch on t.v.).
        If I got Atbat 14 would this work on both my computer and his phone? Would I have to sign up through his phone?

        • Soaker Apr 25,2014 5:25 pm || Up

          I think the only restriction is that the account can only be logged in at one location at a time. If he’s logged in on his phone then you would be blocked from logging in on your computer. The two of you would have to communicate about which games each of you uses the account for.

          According to this, buying the At Bat app gets you access on the computer. (It doesn’t work the other way around unless you buy MLB.tv.) It looks like you can buy At Bat on your computer and then link it to the phone through an mlb.com account.

          • critter Apr 25,2014 5:42 pm || Up

            Thank you GM. That’s what I thought but I kept reading people saying you had to purchase computer/phone app separately. And I didn’t know I could buy it on my computer- much less hassle. Thanks again!

        Jed was the best hitting shortstop in the AL by far last year, if you dock Peralta for the 50 game suspension. Unfortunately, he didn’t win the Silver Slugger because Hardy beat him in the all important category of dingers.

      The plan for Fireworks Night With The Astros is:

      1. Go out and have a nice leisurely dinner.

      2. Show up at the ballpark 2 hours after first pitch. Game will be around the end of the 4th inning so you still get plenty of baseball before the fireworks show.

      Unclear…

      I’m still trying to decide if bunting there was the right idea.

      On one hand:
      -shitty Astros defense
      -Gentry is fking fast

      On the other hand:
      -winExp does not think a sac bunt there is a good idea (in a vacumn)
      -Moss is slow
      -Barton and Punto were coming up

      Glad it worked out in our favor.

      Bo Porter probably cries a lot during the baseball season.

            • Bed Apr 25,2014 9:24 pm || Up

              Yeah, it really is and they’ve been awful for awhile now. It’s not like Houston is a small market either. I keep reading they have this grand plan but it’s hard to see it.

              But seriously, folks...
              • brian.only Apr 25,2014 9:29 pm || Up

                They have a fuck ton of talent coming up soon, and a smart front office. Add Altuve, Villar, and Springer (struggling now but went 37 HR’s 40 SB last year) and you have a good core to build on.
                We need to enjoy beating them while we can.

                • Bed Apr 25,2014 9:31 pm || Up

                  Yeah, I’ve heard that type of thing before. I don’t believe in prospects until they prove something. Right now they’re just names.

    What I discovered Blew. My. Mind. -- Pat Boone
    • lenscrafters Apr 25,2014 9:20 pm || Up

      Yeah, and Bo Porter seems like the type of guy who’s dumb enough to continue this. Really don’t want any of our guys getting thrown at again.

      On the other hand, you throw at Lowrie three times and hit Moss twice in one inning. Sit down and shut the fk up.

      • brian.only Apr 25,2014 9:23 pm || Up

        Looking at the umpire lips, I think he said ‘bullshit’ about 12 times during that chat.

  121. James V. Apr 25,2014 9:16 pm

    I was just about to say, if I’m the plate ump I’m taking nothing from Bo Porter after all his BS. Sure enough: tossed.

    • ozzman99 Apr 25,2014 9:18 pm || Up

      He throws at Lowrie in 2 different games, and then acts outraged when the A’s retaliate. Isn’t that just the game taking care of itself?

      • James V. Apr 25,2014 9:23 pm || Up

        And Moss got hit twice in the 9th, even if unintentional.

      • brian.only Apr 25,2014 9:24 pm || Up

        Really, what the fuck does that mean if not a threat?

        • ozzman99 Apr 25,2014 9:32 pm || Up

          That’s exactly what it is. Didn’t he expect his actions to have consequences? Don’t get me wrong, I’d hate for a beanball war to break out. I don’t want any of our guys getting hurt. But you’ve gotta be realistic, if you keep hitting guys, opposing pitchers will retaliate.

    Tomorrow’s pitching matchup is less favorable. But at least Bo and his pitchers have the A’s hitters focused.

    • dmoas Apr 26,2014 7:23 am || Up

      He’ll likely get his better pitcher tossed along with himself.

      • Future Ed Apr 26,2014 7:33 am || Up

        he is in a bad position.

        The astros threw at lowrie twice. the A’s threw at castro once. that is “baseball taking care of itself”

        I think the consensus outside the astro broadcast booth is that porter was a tool to do it once, twice was clown show. Now to go again would mean this is his lsat managerial job ever.

        I have $5. No I don\'t.
