I’m rounding into form for the season, having regained my routine of doing laundry and dishes around the house when the evening game starts, so as to time those activities to the Korach radio innings.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
How does that run in any way ease the pain of Sogard getting thrown at first, Glen? You could have possibly had a runner at 3rd (likely 2nd) and 1 out.
Ha, a live look in with the Angels broadcast and they were talking about the blue ribbon committee: “The committee has been working longer than the U.S. was in WWII.”
To clarify, I’m not wishing harm to any A’s player. I’m hoping for a roster spot to be opened up for Taylor, who I believe is the best option in the minors right now. I think the pitcher the A’s got along with Lowrie last year, and is still recovering from TJS, would be a good option.
it’s been brought to my attention (thanks chickie) that he can knit in mid-air, sip a lake through a straw, and keep a trio of teen girls satisfied while they drive him around in a van. so yeah, RF wouldn’t have been much of a problem.
Wait, what did you say, Glen? Barton would hit in Jaso’s spot, wouldn’t he? Not Reddick’s. Since Norris PH’d and stayed in the game, he bats in Reddick’s spot. Right?
Since everyone is wearing #42 and no one has names on their jerseys, I wonder if Melvin could run out there and convince the umps that the Angels batted out of order.
Billy needs to phone up Doc Brown and set the Delorian to June of 2012 and strike a deal with Miami (who presumably go on to lose to the Cubs in the 2015 World Series).
Right? I guess that comes when you stop scoring in a bases loaded, no out situation. I was going to say something similar, but I didn’t want to sound greedy
A lot of complicated feelings about this game. But the truth is if you can win games like this in the division on the road you’re gonna three-peat it, possibly by a lot.
This team needs to go the last little way and perfect the Killer Instinct. Straily gives up too many 2 out mistake hits and lacks the consistent ability to finish hitters…. this is the barrier between him and taking the next step. Whne the bases were loaded after scoring three, you have to score four or five more there and FINISH TEAMS so it never gets to extras and you send the ‘pen home rested and the Halos home super demoralized yet again, their season shitting the bed in April like always.
I love the resilience that gets us through these games, but this team can take another step if they get it even more together. I really believe they can rampage the AL if they do that. I’ll say this: this could be the most potentially dominant team I’ve rooted for since 1986 in Queens.
Never suck on a Blow Pop with the microphone open.
That’s ok Ed, andeux just came up with a very succinct way of putting all of your thoughts together in a simple, easy-to-digest form. He’s obviously been contemplating this opportunity for quite some time, probably taking input from many of your thoughtful posts over the years.
I was thinking about this, maybe Melvin is a mad genius and has been playing sciocia and the rest of the league for years. Scioscia figured, rightly, that reddick could only be pinch hit for by a right fielder. Seeing none on the bench, scioscia thought it was the boss move
SFBT reports A’s seeking ten-year e-coli extension. No foolin’. Some dough will be spent: legible 21st century scoreboards may be in da woiks. No word on any planned upgrades to achieve 20th century plumbing.
So is the Chron. With the added note that they’re willing to vacate for the Raiders (with some notice) if they successfully get that ball rolling. The one caveat that’s may be tricky and a likely obstacle is that the cost of the lease would more or less pay the lease so they’d be getting next to no money from the A’s.
Other way around, the lease money/upgrades equation won’t be much of an issue; the exact terms of the JPA right to terminate for Raiders development will be the crucial part.
If I were the Raiders I’d be worried that Wolffish might make an offer to develop the whole thing themselves.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
I kind of hope he does. To me, that’s the only real potential scenario where they stay. The only the reason I think the lease money/upgrade side would be an obstacle is because they need to make debt payments and traditionally the A’s have been fleecing them on parking/concessions after the Mount Davis deal. The JPA needs to get a little something out of it aside from the upgrades. But yes, the termination side will be an issue too. Especially if the A’s pony up that cash only to find out within in a year or two they need to move.
If I were the Raiders I’d be worried that Wolffish might make an offer to develop the whole thing themselves.
Doing the Cisco Field in Fremont idea on the Coliseum site might be financially viable, now that the Great Recession is far enough in the rearview mirror.
I’m not sure the housing part makes sense at that location.
And even if it does, it wouldn’t be the profit center that they thought it would be c. 2006.
Still, some variant might be made to work.
When I was a student at Cal, Emeryville was a no-man’s land of derelict war-era factories and warehouses with a few crack houses mixed in. Emeryville may not be one’s idea of a model 21st-century community, but it’s a hell of a lot better now than it was 30 years ago. The Coliseum environs have a similar geographical advantage, but it will take a few risk-taking developers to get that ball rolling.
A mixed-use village there should work just fine, especially considering it’s location to BART. The only real issue is at what cost and profit margins. Especially when you add in the cost to finance both a stadium. the Mount Davis debt service, and whatever leftover costs that are associated with the infrastructure costs after various bonding measures etc are applied.
Emeryville used the power of their Redevelopment Agency to create zones out of almost the entire city that could be re-built using TIF. That option doesn’t exist any more. But still, given the housing market in the Bay Area there is still the possibility that the Coliseum area, with additional amenities, could be a desirable residential sub-market.
Apparently the site would require 300-400 million in infrastructure costs so it wouldn’t be a slam dunk, but if Oakland were willing to allow him to do it solo with just the A’s staying, it would be foolish not to invest the time and energy into running the numbers. And odds are there’s a scenario there that could work.
I used to enjoy the ‘Gate but now avoid it, except for Slusser. Buncha slideshow click whores who have forfeited their soul. Bay Area ‘celebrity’ competition was my last straw. People mag west.

For those of who are not experts, how hard would it be to back out of a lease like that? If they have options of vacating for the Raiders, I’m assuming they would have options of vacating if they could reach a deal in a new city, right?
I’d think so. But it’s all negotiable. So it would all be determined by the an agreed upon set of parameters. The City/County would likely want major restrictions making it difficult/impossible to end unless they stay in Oakland and the A’s would likely want it loose, sort of the flip of whatever they expect in the case of the Raiders.
They also have no need to do the A’s any favors in making it easy to move out of the city. While they’ll also try to force a “work with us” scenario for a new stadium in Oakland, that’s basically a non-starter, but ironclad lease conditions aren’t or at least shouldn’t be if the A’s are being realistic.
On his TV spot the other day, Radnich was explaining that he cares about Lincecum, he cares about Posey, he even cares about Trout, but he just can’t bring himself to care about “Mike Jaso”.
I remember seeing Radnich at an A’s fanfest type thing back in the mid-90s at some hotel near the airport. I think maybe he had to be there because KRON was carrying A’s games that year. He cruised in, glad handed everyone in sight, taped a standup and some b-roll of Tom Candiotti throwing him an ersatz knuckleball, and GTFO’d, all within about 5 minutes. Guy’s a pro.
I actually still have a ticket he signed for me when we were in the new (at the time) bleachers in LF. It was the first night they were open and he was doing a story on them.
I also have a random ticket Sandy Alderson signed.
Sunderland! If they can hold on, then next Sunday’s Liverpool/Chelsea clash is a title-decider just as last Sunday’s Liverpool/Manchester City was – hopefully with a similar result (though no chance of it being as good a game).
The Mets radio guys were discussing how Eric Young, who lives in Scottsdale in the offseason, has been very pleased with his sports psychology work with this hypnotist/counselor. Sending Reddick to extended spring training and giving him a number of sessions with her wouldn’t hurt.
It looks like Kevin Towers will probably be losing his job pretty soon. Hopefully he can make one last trade with us before that happens. We’ll take Goldschmidt for Reddick and Barton.
If the Mariners keep Felix on a strict every fifth day schedule, he’ll be pitching on the 6th. If they give him one extra day some time in late April (they have off days on the 24th and 28th), he’d be pitching one of the doubleheader games.
Both teams will need to use a 6th starter at some point. The A’s might be tempted to punt the game against Felix (whichever one that is) and try to win the other two.
Interesting lineup for today. No Coco, but Moss over Reddick in RF. With flyball extraordinaire Tommy Milone on the mound. Also Sogard over Barton which means Callaspo at first base.
I like to measure offensive suck at its nadir against the notoriously awful “hitting” of Sandy Koufax. He posted a career line of .097/.145/.116 in 858 plate appearances.
Setting up for the soul-crushing 3-run homer in the top of the 9th.
soul-stinging singles get the job done too.
stax/volt etc
4 run HR?
singles.
and then…?
no and then!
teamwork.
Wouldn’t be the A’s unless there’s a TOOTBLAN.
i may not know all of what that means but i can imagine what it smells like.

I prefer TOOTBLADA.
vince was busy saying since josh is a run producer, he expected lowrie to score from 2nd. So it was a good aggressive play.
cf barton
Lowrie absolutely should have tried to score. There was a chance there.
Bottom of the order getting it done, just like we all predicted.
Nice one, Josh.
Another base-running fail
Yay, a game thread! And 14 is my favorite number.
I’m rounding into form for the season, having regained my routine of doing laundry and dishes around the house when the evening game starts, so as to time those activities to the Korach radio innings.
fking Straily…
Ugh, two hangers in a row
this
Sounds like a tour of Planned Parenthood.
“but the damage has been done”
fking hate watching Straily pitch
try the radio.
Ah, well. Win tomorrow, go 7-2 on this road trip, smile a lot.
Then hang out with me and rule the world.
I’ll see you in a couple of days!
It’s gonna be this kind of game:
I just Dr. K’d over there. But yeah, bus traffic on the 5s on KGMZ
isn’t today patriots day? why aren’t the red sox playing at 9 AM at home?
I believe that’s the third Monday of April, which would be next week.
Pomeranz for next Straily start
I hope he gets stretched out.
Chris Resop says…
huh. the more you know
Quality use of MLB video for research.
That Resop, he’s a real handful.
I think maybe the A’s should put that ad with Grandpa’s urn back into the vault for all eternity.
Liking Gentry a lot already.
gah
OMG you’ve gotta be fucking kidding me
sure would be nice to have those base running gaffs back
running clinic. now!
Come on with the outs on the basepath already
How does that run in any way ease the pain of Sogard getting thrown at first, Glen? You could have possibly had a runner at 3rd (likely 2nd) and 1 out.
I totally forgot about Sogards misadventures on the bases.
So basically, thursday’s off day should be spent teaching these idiots how to run.
Ha, a live look in with the Angels broadcast and they were talking about the blue ribbon committee: “The committee has been working longer than the U.S. was in WWII.”
Beating the Axis was a simpler job.
That’s what comes of showing up late.
Uh oh, Gentry looks hurt.
So you’re as scared as I am about that one too. That was NOT a good look.
Yikes. Genrty’s left shoulder did not move the entire way back to the dugout. That can’t be good. No one patted him on the back either.
I’m hoping that after this game, someone is going on the 60-day DL so that Michael Taylor can get another shot.
Well, Fuld got DFAed so we have an open spot on the 40 man roster.
…I am not understanding why we would want to hope for that.
He looked really really great in ST?
I know, I know…
To clarify, I’m not wishing harm to any A’s player. I’m hoping for a roster spot to be opened up for Taylor, who I believe is the best option in the minors right now. I think the pitcher the A’s got along with Lowrie last year, and is still recovering from TJS, would be a good option.
I think the A’s still have an open 40 man roster spot (Fuld).
I believe they have two spots.
But the appeal of Taylor eludes me.
It’s mostly “Not Reddick”
And “Not Fuld”
Ah, never mind, it looks like Kitten Face is still OK (I hope).
Early teAse…
Don’t discount the Angels bullpen in facilitating A’s runs
Or the slegnA defense.
Like that!
Hee!
MoJo
Woohoo!
Good getting back to 1st Moss!
Soft Underbelly.
Bases drunk, lets break this thing open boys!
Things are looking up!
LOL Waller. That was cute.
FK YEAH
There we go Callaspo!
lovely game so far.
This is fun!
Oh wow, Norris PHing for Reddick.
I guess Gentry can’t be too hurt then
yeah, that’s what I was thinking
Shit worked, beautiful base hit.
I’m also guessing that means Gentry is okay as well.
Finally a smart non-shit-for-tit PH move.
Probably Bob just got mixed up because of all the 42s.
LMAO!
Yo 42..get up you’re hitting for..uh 42????
Using the other catcher to pinch hit for a non-catcher? That’s crazy, man!
Norris can’t play RF!!
it’s been brought to my attention (thanks chickie) that he can knit in mid-air, sip a lake through a straw, and keep a trio of teen girls satisfied while they drive him around in a van. so yeah, RF wouldn’t have been much of a problem.
look! video proof.
(eat your heart out encino man!)
Now that’s the good life, right there.
I love seeing the A’s all wearing Dave Henderson’s number.
Nice!
The Yeti comes through!!
Man’s got thunder-thighs!
This is cool. I might like this whole baseball thing.
Welcome nederlad. From now comments will be accepted automatically.
Also: Hi G!
Hi! Updating the witch tonight via text, she’s hosting an event, and FREAKING out she can’t watch this insanity live.
Hey, G!!!
I assume you are g since everyone is saying hi g.
Hi g
Capital G please.
Lower case g is retired (with occasional and welcome returns)
truth.
thought of that when I posted
Heya!
Hi all! Just bopping in for a bit.
You look hungry, hungry Homer.
Sooo….hungy.
Holy crap, has it been a while.
How’s tricks?
Still buying lottery tickets, if ya know what I mean. But doing well! Et vous?
Heh. Not too shabby.
Along the same lines here, too. Always more world than explanation.
I had passed on a movie rec for you and N a while back.
The Man from Earth. You might’ve seen it already.
Also, I’ve been meaning to pick up the Fringe binge–I fell off after the second season–but I’ve had sporadic internet access.
Hey G!
Howdy. We like to set things on fire.
I carry a shoulder holster with a bottle of Ronson in it. Let’s hope Canyonero is doing the same!
I just wanted to say that late inning comebacks on the west coast are much appreciated by early rising working men of Europe
I bet it’s great to have pie for breakfast.
Sure is
Bwahahahaha
Let’s go Keebs!
Let’s cap this off with a Sogard Slam down the line.
Walk, single, single, walk, single, single, walk…
Good time for a double.
Okay, maybe that was a little too greedy.
Tricksy slide there Callaspo
Would like 2 more runs here, if Cook is going back out.
Oof. Well good inning boys
Ok Cook, throw strikes.
Wait, what did you say, Glen? Barton would hit in Jaso’s spot, wouldn’t he? Not Reddick’s. Since Norris PH’d and stayed in the game, he bats in Reddick’s spot. Right?
Boxscore has Barton in the 1-spot, yes.
norris catching
Right, but Norris replaced Reddick in the lineup and bats in his spot. Barton replaced Jaso and bats in his spot.
This is why Melvin doesn’t do this very often
He has to practice, for interleague play.
i am not listening to glen
Great life advice.
Clearly Kuiper put Barton’s name in the wrong spot in his scorebook. He still thinks Barton’s up after Callaspo, not Norris.
You’d think he’d know this.
Look who you’re talking about.
I try to be optimistic.
#BringerofTears

you and G in the same thread is freaking me out. You have 2 computers? Are you in the annex?
we have three computers, two tablets, and two phones. ;)
That’s in Stockton, but a pretty nice beginning to the season.
Awesome! I bet he’s enjoying the hell out of it too.
I got him to sign my Spring Training cap on Saturday. Nice dude.
Shuck is one annoying motherfker
G’dammit Cook, now this is a ‘something’. DP pls.
Otero.
Cook put the 1st runner on.
Shuck turned a good pitch into a hit.
This is starting to piss me off.
Come on, Best Bullpen in Baseball (TM)
Since everyone is wearing #42 and no one has names on their jerseys, I wonder if Melvin could run out there and convince the umps that the Angels batted out of order.
Sexy pitch
Saucy!
this is a wild game

Captain Obvioso
Billy needs to phone up Doc Brown and set the Delorian to June of 2012 and strike a deal with Miami (who presumably go on to lose to the Cubs in the 2015 World Series).
Keep Calhoun off the bases.
Crap
THROW SOME FKING STRIKES
Damnit Trout
sigh
ugh
Crap.
Bad pitching all around, then.
Not over yet.
harumph.
You could see that coming. This is the problem with Doolittle. He has one pitch.
And here I thought I’d get to bed early tonight.
Just could not excuse putting Calhoun on base. It looked like Doolittle was pitching around him at first.
Free baseball!
A’s runz mojo baby.
All this means now is Daric Barton gets to be tonight’s hero. Right?
Okay. But for which team?
The one with an A in their name.
Now set up for Little Nicky Punto to be the hero in the 12th.
Callaspo swung anyway.
It’s going to come down to Barton isn’t it.
Cocomojo!
So, Craig Gentry vs. Sam Fuld. Any questions?
I NEVER DOUBTED YOU DARIC!
Nice try
Barton’s chance to be the hero.
You got this, Barton.
Still scratching my head as to why he subbed for Sogard and not Barton…
Dagnab.
Barfton.
Probably should have gone with Punto there. Yes. I just said that. That’s… sad.
Daric Barton.
As bad as Reddick’s season has started, Barton’s has been even worse. Problem is, the A’s have no legit backup for Moss at 1B.
Freiman MIGHT be able to back up Moss, but he’s still a major question mark.
Barton wishes he was a question mark.
Barton’s more of an em-dash, or maybe an ellipsis.
Nah, he’s one of those annoying apostrophes that when converted to ascii or rendered have a tendency to show up as a square.
You just dont appreciate the true value of the ascii square, AMIRITE?!@?!?!?
JOHNSON FOR CLOSER
I kinda think, yeah.
But I bet if he came in in the ninth and did what he did in his 2nd inning, we would still doubt him
Season totals:
Reddick 4 hits all season
Gentry 3 tonight and the game is not done yet
And Daric Barton has one. Or is it 2? I don’t wanna short change the guy, being the sabermetric stud he truly is.
deux
JD!!!!
This team is so FKing resilient.
JD!!!
Hey hey Josh Donaldson!
I was just about to post post a Rally Salma, WOO!
Just like that, back on top thanks to Lowrie & Donaldson.
Make them pay Norris, make them pay.
Walking Callaspo just means an extra run when Norris homers.
Not quite on the right part of the bat.
3 quick slegnA outs please.
Clockwise mojo.
Awe damn that sucks…
eugh…
ouch
So what can Billy extort from the Angels in exchange for Fuld?
Calhoun messed up his right ankle after passing 1B. Baseball is dangerous.
1st base is dangerous for the angels.
Isn’t Trout good enough to not need that kind of luck?
Uh, who do we have warming up?
I scurred!
this guy…
Sigh
GIDP juju!
Just one more….please…
Phew
YES!
YES!!
and whew.
Phew! Now there’s a win!
Never a doubt.
Ok, I need a shower.
CELEBRATE!
Another A’s win.
Yay.
OK< so driving to work is bad for the A's. Watching them play on 150k measurement device, on the other hand, seems to work well for them
Hey, how about that?
yay, series win!
Angels fans must wonder how the fuck the A’s keep pulling that shit out against their team.
Quite a roller coaster first couple weeks for Jim Johnson. He’s on the right path.
…and Johnson gets the W. Again!
Only four more wins in extras till they match last years total.
never thought I would be so disappointed in a 4 run 8th where the A’s take the lead by 3.
Right? I guess that comes when you stop scoring in a bases loaded, no out situation. I was going to say something similar, but I didn’t want to sound greedy

Fun with SSS:
OAK is 10-4, 7-1 on the road.
MIL is 10-4, 6-0 on the road.
ARI is 4-13, 1-10 at home.
Scioscia FKed this up, right? Bringing in the lefty to face only Reddick’s spot when Melvin had Norris available? Insane.
Clearly Sosh did not think Melvin would actually PH with someone who plays a different position, so I can see the reasoning.
What a genius Bob Melvin is.
The long con.
read the thread, ed

That’s correct, the JPA won’t give the A’s an early exit option. Tenancy at the current stadium is about the only real leverage the JPA has.

He’s a tool. A pompous, egotistical one at that. Loves the sound of his own voice.
Truth.
You forgot ignorant!
Triple crown!
Yeahbut that describes about 98% of people who are paid to stand in front of cameras, and a fair amount of the ones in front of microphones.
Well, sure. But not all of the exude it in every pore on their body while doing it.
True.
The good ones don’t let the audience figure it out.
Exactly.
He also use to show up to his daughters speech and debate tournaments drunk/hung over.
So normal?
He’s more interested in watching a superstar go 0-for-5 than a more anonymous player win a game with a clutch, pinch-hit home run.
Who wouldn’t be?
fixed that for ya.
The slegnA walked Reddick twice last night to spark two A’s rallies. They pretty much deserved to lose after that.
EPL stuff.
Sunderland! If they can hold on, then next Sunday’s Liverpool/Chelsea clash is a title-decider just as last Sunday’s Liverpool/Manchester City was – hopefully with a similar result (though no chance of it being as good a game).
So much for that.
Is Jozy playing?
Thanks, and go As.
Of course not!
FKing dammit.
Thanks, and go As.
wow bale. FUCK!
wow neymar. FUCK!
wow dmoas. FUCK!
how quickly we go from interjections to imperatives.
Should I have said “please?”
wow. I DON’T KNOW WHAT WE ARE YELLING ABOUT!!
oh geebus. neymar nails the post like a centurion in judea.
Sunderland again! Hold fast, Black Cats, hold fast.
And before you ask, MikeV, no he isn’t.
66 minutes in and Altidore is on the pitch!
exciting. just home for overage.
i’ve been on a wild goose chase. record sale on moraga from caiglist. either i just couldn’t find it or record sale day prank.
a whole minute of someone limping, so far.
he misused a nice chance at the end.
The Mets radio guys were discussing how Eric Young, who lives in Scottsdale in the offseason, has been very pleased with his sports psychology work with this hypnotist/counselor. Sending Reddick to extended spring training and giving him a number of sessions with her wouldn’t hurt.
My stepfather used to be the team psychologist for the Warriors – I’m trying to coax him out of retirement.
It looks like Kevin Towers will probably be losing his job pretty soon. Hopefully he can make one last trade with us before that happens. We’ll take Goldschmidt for Reddick and Barton.
Meh. I think we can do a lot better. What else they got?
Trumbo, too.
Thanks, and go As.
I was thinking Scioscia would be the first managerial casualty this year, but it looks like the Arizona guy will beat him to the guillotine.
It would serve He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named right.
Don’t rule out Ned Yost.
Of course springer will be with the astros for us, but not the rangers series where the lost 2 1-0 games
Still the Astros.
On the plus side, we can dust off the “Jerry, Jerry, Jerry” chant.
Whoa … what’s happening to the comments.
and back to normal (or as normal as it gets around here, at least)
That was me, sorry. Too many beans last night.
@ptbnl, it wasn’t me. I didn’t do it. you can’t prove anything.
Ooooh, 3 home games in 24 hours on May 6-7 with a Free Parking Tuesday thrown in. That will be my first Oakland trip of the season.
I need to seriously consider taking a day off for the doubleheader.
Korach party between games in Stomper’s Fun Zone!
Didn’t think I’d ever see a lineup with all four middle infielders in it.
Barton and Reddick are a combined .090/.197/.090.
I like to measure offensive suck at its nadir against the notoriously awful “hitting” of Sandy Koufax. He posted a career line of .097/.145/.116 in 858 plate appearances.
Well I like the infield defense as long as the ball never has to go to 1b.
I’m going to my first Cal baseball game tomorrow night.
Scott Sizemore sighting.
