Dude, Where’s My Game 13 Thread? 329

Gentry CF, Lowrie SS, Donaldson 3B, Cespedes LF, Norris C, Callaspo DH, Punto 2B, Reddick RF, Barton 1B w. Chavez P

A’s down 1-0 in bottom of 1st, RBI single from Pujols, not a horrible pitch by Chavez who also threw some nasty looking pitches to Trout.

I can’t tell you what the A’s did in the top of the first because…and this is absolutely true…the game is on ESPN tonight, I turned it on to find that the Braves vs Phillies game was still going on, and I fell asleep.

    My reliance on MLB.TV is killing me.

    Given that I do not have cable, the Seattle series in Oakland was blacked out for me. Then, due to work, missed every one of the Twins games. Again, was unable to view any of the games this past weekend and was sadly too busy to attend in person. Thought tonight would finally end my A’s TV fast, but I see those clowns at ESPN picked up this one.

    The reward of course, is 3 hours of Radio Fosse.

    • FreeSeatUpgrade Apr 14,2014 7:49 pm || Up

      Damn, that’s some crap luck all right. I thought last year they stopped letting Ray into the radio booth on those rare no TV games; am I misremembering?

      "Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
  7. mikeA Apr 14,2014 7:35 pm

    New twist on the stupid rule: in the Seattle-Texas game, there was a bases loaded grounder to third, throw home. Catcher caught it, then bobbled on the transfer going for the double play to 1B, wound up catching the ball again after bobbling. Called out, challenged and changed to safe. So: would that also apply on fly balls in sac fly situations? What would happen if an OF caught the ball, bobbled on the transfer, caught it again, then threw behind to third since the runner would have left after the first catch?

    • dmoas Apr 14,2014 7:41 pm || Up

      On a pop up, once it touches the glove the runners can go.

      • FreeSeatUpgrade Apr 14,2014 7:45 pm || Up

        Or at least that’s how it has always been before. Changing that interpretation would be logically consistent with the new interpretation of catches though.

        "Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
        • dmoas Apr 14,2014 7:47 pm || Up

          I don’t really see that part changing even with the interpretation. It’s not much different than the ball hitting the glove and immediately popping up in the air only to be caught again.

    • doctorK Apr 14,2014 7:49 pm || Up

      If I’m not mistaken, the sac fly rule is that the runner may advance without risk of being doubled off after the fielder makes contact with the ball.

      I was trying to decide how I felt about this one in the 9th (pre jaso).

      On the one hand, I hate wasting good pitching. On the otherhand, there were several wasted opportunities that made me think a win was undeserved.

      Also, this offensive performance shows the pressing need for right handed depth. I really miss Jonny Gomes for that. I am not sure Frieman is the answer. As much as I love barton, (I can’t finish this thought)

      So yes, Very satisfying win, but for me, I don’t think this wold have been a disappointing loss Had Jaso not been so Boss-o.

      • mikeA Apr 15,2014 10:26 am || Up

        That game was the best matchup of the series for the A’s. The last two games appear not to favor us, so a loss would have been troubling.

        I’m really not too worried about the lineup against LHPs. Cespedes crushes lefties. The team was 30 OPS points better against LHP last year. Punto vs. LHP is basically the same thing as Sogard vs. RHP. Also replacing Reddick/Barton with Coco would make the offense look better.

        • vignette17 Apr 15,2014 10:32 am || Up

          Last year, Donaldson and Norris lit up lefties (as in top 5 in MLB). While I don’t think either is quite that good, they both will hit them plenty.

        • Glorious Mundy Apr 15,2014 10:36 am || Up

          The biggest problem against lefties is losing Moss. We have all underrated how useful Freiman was last year in that respect. I just wish he could get a little better at defense.

  85. lenscrafters Apr 14,2014 10:20 pm

    I feel like Jaso really does not get appreciated enough by A’s fans.

    Since 2012, he has a 150 wRC+ against righties. That’s 10th among all players with at least 500 at bats during that time, tied with Carlos Gonzalez. And he has a career .325/.423/.513 line against the slegnA.

    • mikeA Apr 14,2014 10:23 pm || Up

      Agreed. I have always appreciated him. Very happy with that trade, very bummed when he went down last year. The catching platoon is pretty awesome on offense. I hope he gets moved back to #2/sometimes #1 in the order where he was last year.
      His defense really is pretty bad though…

      • DFA Apr 14,2014 10:43 pm || Up

        If you look at Cole’s stats you might not be very happy. K9>9 and BB9 of 2 last year in A+ and AA. Tiernan is pitching in the bigs and Krol helped them get Fister.

        Last year Jaso was worth 1.2 WAR and he is only projected to be 2 WAR this year.

        I wouldn’t say it was a good trade. Especially since Norris seems capable of handling the position.

        • lenscrafters Apr 14,2014 10:57 pm || Up

          Cole was a complete wild card when traded because he sucked in A+ the year before. Even though he had a good year last year, he’s still not regarded as a top 100 prospect by BA. I’d regard him as a B prospect, B- when traded last year, and I’m a big Cole fan going back to when they first traded for him.

          Treinen and Krol are non elite relievers. 3 years of a 2 WAR catcher for a B, B- wild card and two relievers seems about equal to me. Plus, the A’s are competing these next three years so the marginal wins Jaso provides is important. And given how Norris was abysmal against righties last year, I don’t regard him as a valid full time option yet.

          • DFA Apr 14,2014 11:43 pm || Up

            Cole is the #2 prospect in the Nats system.
            Mlb.com ranks him #69 overall which is done by Callis IIRC who use to be BA

            On BA’s exlusion

            There were 111 players who did not make the Top 100 Prospects list who made at least one Baseball America staffers Top 150 personal list. Eight players made all seven ballots—Brian Goodwin, A.J. Cole, Hak-Ju Lee, Phillip Ervin, Sean Manaea, Hunter Harvey, Taylor Guerrieri and Casey Kelly. Not coincidentally, seven came close to making the Top 100.

            Here’s a look at everyone who didn’t make the Top 100 but did receive a vote, listed in alphabetical order. Peak ranking is the highest ranking the player received on any ballot.

            Player No. of Ballots Peak Ranking
            A.J. Cole 7 49

            Treinen was a starter until the Nats needed an extra BP arm. He has a career K/BB of 3.41

              That’s interesting. I thought it was odd that Cole was excluded. But this confirms to me that while Cole is a good prospect, it doesn’t seem like he’s considered to be a great one, and his median outcome is not something we’d regret losing too much. In any case, you have to trade quality for quality.

              Treinen turned out better than expected but you neglected to mention that his K rate dropped to 6/9 after he moved up to AA. I don’t see a quality big league starter there so I maintain that he and Krol are two inconsequential relievers.

                Catchers tend to have foul balls hit their faces.

                Foul balls tend to cause concussions.

                Those with a history of concussions are more susceptible to future head injuries.

          The trade pieces aside, isn’t it good to combine WAR among catchers, or at least look at what you’re getting (or expect to get) out of both Norris and Jaso, since that position usually has more time split instead of someone playing every day?

          Looks like ZIPS expects about 4 WAR combined between the two, with both about even.

          Did anyone ever complain about this as a big problem before? Did I miss something?

          • dmoas Apr 15,2014 1:21 pm || Up

            It’s a pretty big problem. It’s been on-going over the last week because they basically instituted it at the very beginning of the season and didn’t didn’t really announce anything. It was basically, “Oh yeah, this is the rule interpretation of the rule, so deal with it.”

            • Future Ed Apr 15,2014 2:30 pm || Up

              (i think he means, was it a problem in 2013 and before. The answer is no, it has never been an issue. )

              I am guessing in the replay committee meeting someone asked if that was reviewable and an idiot was placed in charge of teh subcommittee on transfers and no one fired him/her.

      • dmoas Apr 15,2014 1:47 pm || Up

        Even ESPN now has addressed it. The one key thing missing in EVERY article about is a response from MLB. Why aren’t they asking Selig et al, um WHY.

        • James V. Apr 15,2014 2:03 pm || Up

          Selig is putting together a committee to evaluate the issue as we speak.

      Because they drafted him right out of college in 1929 and nobly broke the racial barrier with him in 1932, and he rewarded them by leading them to their first of 41 consecutive championships and also by becoming the first black man ever to walk on the moon. Don’t you watch ESPN?

              White & yellow as colors are just too close together and have a tendency to bleed into each other when you look at them. Especially on TV or in shadows. So it comes out as a very thick, blocky “A’s” and it’s just not at all appealing.

              • FreeSeatUpgrade Apr 15,2014 3:52 pm || Up

                I like the yellow on white accents, I find them subtle.

                  They just don’t work for me at all. White and yellow are both just too bright of colors to gel right. There’s zero contrast so it doesn’t show any separation. It might work if combined they were the normal sized logo, but since they just took the normal sized look and added an outline, they may as well have just made the entire ginormous block all white for how well the subtly shows.

      That plot is average salary per team member, not total team salary? There is a lot of discrepancy in roster size between different sports. I don’t even know how many players are on a Premier League team.

      • ptbnl Apr 16,2014 6:54 am || Up

        Yes, average per team member. Premier League first team squads are 25 players, but clubs have reserve and junior squads too.

        I heard talk of this recently on some podcast. The culture now is that batting ninth is a place of honor now for speedy guys who aren’t good enough to lead off. 8th is where the worst hitter bats.

      With these 9 guys, I think this is pretty dang close to the optimal lineup. If you believe Reddick isn’t permanently broken.
