One or more of the following may soon be cancelled:
Fuld CF Lowrie SS, Donaldson RF, Moss RF, Cespedes LF, Callaspo DH, Norris C, Barton 1B, Sogard 2B, Milone LHP
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
This explains a lot.
again with producing 30 gallons at a time…
let’s get some metaphorical regicide.
I am fine with forgetting this one.
If you know the name of the king or queen being murdered, press one.
lol
One gets so few chances at literal regicide these days.
I’ve been binge rewatching Deadwood, through the first season now. Such a fucking great show. Fuck that cocksucker who didn’t finish it.
*gasp!*
My virgin ears!
The Number of Fucks In Deadwood.
Number of fucks I give right now: zero.
Thanks, and go As.
Pretty good inning there against Felix, except for the lack of runs hits or baserunners.
No one shit themselves. Positive!
This might not be our night.
This is probably not how the A’s drew up the beginning to this game.
C’mon, Barton.
I don’t have high expectations for today’s game.
with fielding like this, he must feel all milone on that mound.
Breaking out the bad puns in the first inning augers a tough night ahead.
i learned it from house. if one part of your body hurts, pound another with a heavy objet.
—
and i can’t believe balfour got out of that one. he’s so FK’n annoying when he’s not on your team. NEVER KNEW!
This isn’t actually game 11, is it?
Huh, phantom comment location outcome.
ionno, i only have 10 fingers.
OK, that does it, I’m changing the title.
wanna do today’s thread, nigel tufnel?
Daric Barton, ladies and gentlemen.
If Milone was more capable of fielding at his position, it wouldn’t have been a problem.
SILENCE!
I’m not going to make excuses for Barton that inning, but it kind of looked like Milone was crossing his path when he was about to throw home.
Are you talking about the play where Barton cut him off in order to pick up the ball and not throw to anyone, or the play where he was late getting to first when there was no way going to first was the right play?
i was in the car picking up my parents at sfo.
It makes ed sad when barton is in the middle of bad play
if you want, i’ll argue about it with you for a while.
but only if we both agree not to go to gameday, watch the replay, and just be done with it.
Can I watch?
(And by watch I mean the two of you, not the replays.)
Who on earth was he going to throw to? No one was at the bag when he picked the ball up. And he didn’t cut anyone off to pick it up. Milone fell off to the third base side and was mor or less unreliable to make any sort of play.
Are we talking about the Cano “hit”? If he fields it cleanly, he throws home, I would think. After that…I think he could have beaten Cano to the bag if he hadn’t looked at second. It’d be close, but I think he beats him. But, you know, mistakes happen.
You know who else made mistakes?
Thanks, and go As.
Oooh Oooh! Is it Daric?
Hitler.
literally
Thanks, and go As.
IFSU mistakes make you
I was referring to the play before on the bunt.
Oh then never mind. I was writing a FP about how the 1989 A’s didn’t win the World Series because of steroids instead of watching the game, because fuck Roger Craig.
I’d rather not fuck him. He kind of looks like my grandfather. And, well, it’s also Roger Craig. Yuck.
I hate old people
I think Derek Norris should take the base on that one.
Escaping with just 1 run and getting 5 outs… nice job Tommy Milone again, naturally.
WTF are you talking about? Milone put himself into that position.
That’s not what Ken Korach is saying on my radio.
Perhaps you should watch the game for youself then.
Are you calling Ken Korach a liar?
Really? That’s what you take from that? KK is good at what he does, but he’s far from perfect. And we all know how much the guys in the booth, like you, HATE Barton. So I’m saying that there’s a bias there that colors his commentary.
then why is everyone on FB saying Barton clammed both those balls that inning?
Read what I just wrote. Knowing most of your friends, the same bias applies. And let’s be very clear here, if they’re saying that first bunt single was on Barton, they flat out can’t be trusted on any other assessment because that was one of the most perfectly placed bunts there could have been and NO ONE was at the bag when he fielded it.
Whatever you say, boss.
Because haters.
Thanks, and go As.
Are they gonna hate?
undoubtedly.
Thanks, and go As.
Say it ain’t so!
That’s what I’ve read.
I think it was a combination of Barton and Milone. A little more Barton.
Barton had one bad play, specifically not cleanly fielding that ground ball. Aside from that, the mess that was created was of Milone’s making. And had he been quicker at fielding his position, they likely get an out at first during that play AND on the previous bunt single. So I’d say while Barton had a MINOR gaff, that inning was all Milone.
I thought Barton double-clutched or just hesitated a little on the bunt play and that was why he gave up on trying to throw to Sogard, then on the bobble he made the mistake of overthinking it. I do think he was about to go home when Milone passed by, and Milone was too late getting to first, yes.
He had very little time to assess and make a move once he got a hold of it. If his first thought was to go to second, we get an out. But there were three possibilities and he just went in the wrong order. Given the speed of the play, I don’t fault him on that. In fact, the worst thing could have done is throw the ball there and most would have and likely throw the ball away. The key when you fuck up: don’t do something even dumber and make it much, much worse.
That is sure not what I saw.
Don’t bother. It’s not about what actually happened, it’s about me having to be wrong.
Its not you, its anyone who doubts DB. And he didnt blow it by not going halfway to the base or whatever it was a week ago because that has to be brought up every game.
There’s no question he’s been a major disappointment since 2010, but some people seem to just revel in their hatred of certain players on this team and it goes way beyond simply wanting them replaced with better people. It’s a little unhealthy to me to despise someone that much just because they’re disappointing on the field.
And there are really good reasons for his dropoff in 2011-2012. I don’t know if I’m allowed to link to a certain thing I wrote making a case for forgiving Barton’s 2011-2012 because it was posted to a certain site and I don’t know how people feel about that, but I think it’s pretty clear that 2011-2012 Barton isn’t true talent Barton.
It was the shoulder thing, right?
A warning of where the link is heading is nice, but there’s nothing wrong with doing it. People do it from time to time.
The following is a post on Athletics Nation. Apologies to MikeV. I am linking to it because I think I made a pretty good case for not holding 2011-2012 against Daric Barton.
Here.
you spelled it wrong. it’s either ** or old country.
My apologies.
mostly kidding / explaining the lingo.
No need to apologize, I care very very little about that place anymore. It’s a shell of what it once was.
Thanks, and go As.
I’d go so far as to say it’s a shell of a shell of a shell of a Humpty Dumpty of what it once was.
And it will remain that way as long as Nico has any shred of power there.
Or Tounces for short.
Did everyone who left during that big debacle at the end of 2011 end up here?
A number of people came here over at least two different incidents there.
I’m thinking of a few folks that I remember from my first stint over there. I was in the midst of an involuntary hiatus from the site when the big one happened (the mikev-banning scandal) but read the stuff that happened later. Did folks like PT and Flashfire and LoneStranger end up here?
I heard that Flashfire guy was a total asshole. Nobody likes him. (it’s JamesV)
PT got a real job and disappeared. LoneStranger mostly sticks to twitter and facebook.
Thanks, and go As.
It’s true.
Aw man, PT was so much fun to read. He totally hated me (as did you, if memory serves), but fun to read.
I don’t remember, to be honest.
I used to be Public Enemy #2 here behind Nico himself, but after all the shit that went down over there I was welcomed here with the past being water under the bridge.
Waking up and seeing Nico for the sycophant he is probably helped.
I hated you? Did you have a different SN over there?
Thanks, and go As.
To be fair, I think you’ve hated just about everyone at one time or another!
Yeah, but that was back when I was a hard-headed ass who didn’t understand how metrics worked, like, at all. We probably argued about Daric Barton a lot.
Jack Cust strisks out too much
I’m Flashfire.
I don’t know if PT posts about baseball any more.
LoneStranger is around on social media here and there. I think he checks in here off and on, but I don’t remember clearly right now.
You still take those awesome photos?
I gave up on doing it at the end of the 2012 season. It got to be too much work for no pay, with too much of my own money spent without it ever getting me anywhere, and I got tired of the model so many places use these days of basically giving people access to games in exchange for photo use without actually paying them for it. The odds of standing out above others and turning it into an actual career are slim to none under that arrangement.
I still take photos, mostly of other stuff these days. I’ve also reposted my MILB stuff on Flickr and here and there I go back and add something really old, like some A’s games from 2003.
Everything can be reached if you click the link my name makes.
I was one of those who left in the 2011 exodus. I was UrgentMirth over at **
There were several exoduses (exodii?)
Thanks, and go As.
The thing is “true talent” changes, with age and injuries.
He was a legitimately good player in 2010.
He is a legitimately bad player now.
I’m not so sure I’d consider him a legimately “bad” player, but he’s definitely below average. But I think that’s more symantics than it is real disagreement.
Funny, and this is absolutely true, I was just thinking how this is an example of some fans clinging to their Barton devotion with a true believer, almost religious fervor.
Same could be said of people who just can’t wait for any chance they get to rip the shit out of one of their team’s own guys.
Ask me which side I think is worse for that.
It’s absolutely on par with it for sure.
It’s not even that. I don’t care about Barton. I just think people should be fair about their criticism of a player, especially one playing for the A’s, instead of letting some strange sense of schadenfreude-like glee over a chance to amplify any mistake he makes.
Unless it’s Emil Brown.
Fuck that guy. Seriously.
Thanks, and go As.
Or FU, TARE, and a few others now that they’re gone.
FU was at least, like, a decent dude — and he DID get Geren canned.
Thanks, and go As.
Pretty great dude, actually, by all accounts. And a vocal A’s fan after he left.
You’re making good points in his favor. I may need to re-assess him. Can I at least be intolerant of his shitty pitching while on our team?
As much as I hated seeing him pitch for the A’s, I liked him just as much for blowing Geren off in that one game by handing the ball to Suzuki instead, and helping directly lead to Geren’s firing. I know it was unprofessional, but it felt so good, so right.
RBI machine!
“Suck Ass”?
“Limp Dick”?
I’ll just take the opportunity to say both those nicknames are stupid and irritating.
I’m pretty sure I came up with both of those. The second one for sure. I actually, in perfect train of thought I don’t think I came up with the first one but continued it’s use because it was apropos.
“BoCro”?
I saw a double down the line that Cespedes over ran, slipped and didn’t get a chance at taking a shot at second. A perfectly laid down bunt that Milone was horribly late to the bag for. That particular play. A pop out. A walk to load the bases. And then Milone lucked into getting out of it by poor batting. What did you see?
Sogard being the one covering first on the bunt, for one thing…
And two plays that were not necessarily routine, but where Barton definitely did the wrong thing.
Sogard was the first to the bag, but that’s only because Milone was late. Regardless of who could have been covering, had Barton stayed on the bag, no one would have gotten to the ball in time to get it to him. And had he thrown the ball to first, no one would have been at the bag to get the out. So I’m not see anything wrong with how he handled it.
Milone was “late” because it was not his job to cover first on that ball. He was about to field it when Barton cut him off.
I agree, it was a well-placed bunt, definitely not routine, but it looked like the best play would have been for Barton to let Milone take it, because Milone would have been facing the bag already, while Barton had to stop his momentum away from the bag and turn before throwing. Or in this case not throwing it, when he maybe still could have gotten the out if he had decided to throw it.
Milone wouldn’t have gotten to the ball before Barton did. And since Barton pretty much had to pick it up and throw to have any chance, they weren’t going to get him. Either way, to blame him for the guy getting on is patently ridiculous. He was going to be safe regardless. Hell, it would make more sense to criticize Cespedes for over running the ball and allowing the guy to get to second assuming if he had picked it up cleanly he’d have stopped or nailed him. But no one’s blaming him for that because it’s… wait for it… ridiculous.
Now you’re arguing with things that are not what I said. Which is … ridiculous.
And to blame Milone “not fielding his position” for that play is even more ridiculous.
I’m not blaming Milone at all. I’m just saying he wasn’t in a position to make the play. His first job is to pitch. It just so happens that leaves in behind in his ability to make defensive plays.
That might have been the best play, but in the heat of the moment, how many people are gonna be able to parse that out in a split second?
Balfour came in for a 2-out save, walked the bases loaded before getting it…
where do guys get those hats with the bills over the ears like that? i go into all the city stores and the only ones I can find are the ones with the bill in the front…
The elmer fudd cap?
the wannabe-thuggy millionaire pitchers’ cap.
How cute. Glen only recently found out about park stats so he thinks it’s a brand new thing.
LOL APPARENTLY SOME PEOPLE THINK THEY CAN QUANTIFY STUFF
“Get this, Ray, they call it a ‘neutral run-scoring environment.'” Yeah. Real crazy stuff, Glen.
Yeah, that was the most hilarious part, that they were all struck by the exotic nature of a stat that said “average.”
so they’ve never heard of ERA???
Is it edible?
It’s fucking delicious.
I like chicks in teh kitchen, barefoot and pregnant.
“all the way.”
you like your women like you like your coffee, ed?
Thanks, and go As.
With a spoon in them?
Ground coarse and stored in the freezer, obv.
Thanks, and go As.
I like MY coffee like I like my men. I don’t like coffee.
I hate this thread.
I hate this game.
drives me mad that baseball broadcasting professionals are so stubborn about interesting things
BREAKING: FELIX HERNANDEZ IS PERFECT THROUGH
TWOTHREE INNINGS.SORRY EVERYBODY EXCEPT BASICALLY ME AND LIKE 3 OTHER DUDES ON THE INTERNET EVER.
Thanks, and go As.
It’s odd and kind of thrilling (in a low-stakes 25th roster spot on a low budget team way) that with just a few hours left this move could go down so many different ways:
1. Fuld DFA
2. Barton DFA
3. Reddick sent down
4. Coco DL’d
5. Somebody traded
Kinda feels like it’s gonna be Reddick getting sent down or Coco DL’d.
Is it down to just the four of us now?
I’m on the don’t give a shit either way he’s not worth being excited or pissed about list. I don’t know where that qualifies me.
I want to be on team dmoas.
Woo Hoo!
First time that’s ever happened.
nevermoor, mike you and me
There’s a small but vocal group at ** as well.
I still like him, but that’s influenced by a pennant he signed for me at spring training ’09.
Here’s him borrowing my camera late in the 18-inning game I covered in Tacoma a couple years ago.
I’d shit on Cespedes for swinging at that, but the umpire would have called it anyway.
dammit Barton, stop giving up home runs
Please tell me we’re not getting fucked on this one.
we’re not getting fucked on this one. ;)
Phew. Actually, I’m a little disappointed, I wouldn’t mind being fucked, just so long it’s the right kind of fucking and the right person doing the fucking. But I’m not interested in Smurf Sex.
no smurfette for you?
pfft. that tease leaves all the smurfs blueballed.
heh.
Wow, the sun really does shine on every dog’s ass some times.
That’s a strange expression to me. I mean, of course the sun shines on every dog’s ass sometimes. Most dogs go outside, and they’re not wearing pants out there.
Right. Every dog, no matter how ugly or stinky or bad a replay challenges it is, eventually gets some sweet sweet ass sun.
Don’t be silly, dogs don’t get replay challenges.
I love you.
Doesn’t that assume they raise their tail? If it’s down, I’m not so sure the sun shines on their ass.
Are we talking ass or assHOLE? They’re not the same.
MikeV is an ass. dmoas is an assHOLE.
You just want me to pucker up… don’t you?
Maybe.
Replay over rule aside, Saeger seems like how I always saw Gentry; not very good but hits about. 800 against us.
Put it this way: you’re not beating Felix Hernandez most days. You definitely aren’t when your defense stinks.
Bad throw and Barton should have come off the bag. While he has “good” defense, he doesn’t exactly have great instincts. (Not blaming him for it though.)
and you get an error and you get an error and…
My new theory; it is going to be Barton and he decided “Im going to make 2 fans kill each other over me before the night is iver”.
Muhahaha
I bid 50 quatloos on San Fuld!
My vote is Coco to the DL. There’s been too much denial over that possibility.
Hell no.
He’ll get an at bat tomorrow. Book it.
Thanks, and go As.
Tonight. And it’ll be to pitch run in a non-critical situation.
2 galleons on Schlong taking a trip to the 916.
in the lineup tomorrow
As of now. I assume Im getting good odds for that very reason.
Tres bon.
Brad Peacock!
So, we’re totally on the verge of hanging a five spot on Felix next inning, don’t y’all think?
Outs? Couple blown calls?
Thanks, and go As.
he hasn’t been exactly untouchable…
Got em right where we want them…
Of course a five spot might not be enough.
Have you been sniffing glue?
I’ll go to my grave thinking Lloyd Bridges deserved an Oscar for his role in Airplane!
I really deserved some sort of major recognition. He was absolutely brilliant in it.
Times making contact?
we’re gonna need a bigger boat.
at this rate…
that’s what I said yesterday, I stand by that
But his xFIP was good!
From the Stockton Ports’ official scorer:
Let’s try that again.
I’m calling TJS.
I’d say he’s probably done, unfortunately. I don’t see him ever staying healthy enough to even reach the upper levels of the minors, let alone the bigs.
Sigh. Stupid injuries ruining dreams
I tune in and see two Mariner home runs. Maybe I should turn it off
I tune in and see the inning where they chase Felix…
all i got left is hoping for no shutout, begging cespy to not swing at the dirt, and yelling at mariner fans to get their own damn color.
If wishes were horses, you would have horses.
All this yellow is confusing
I hope Soaker found some good beer.
Pyramid DPA on nitro ($9.75, lower concourse behind third base).
They also have a cask ale stand where they feature a couple beers from Northwest mini-microbreweries; I had an IPA from Skagit River last night. The guy pouring said they rotate in two new beers each week or each homestand. Walking around the lower concourse I must have seen 25 different taps (but don’t worry, Coors Light is at all the main stands) so there’s something for everybody, though you do have to shop around a bit.
Fucking Seattle cocksuckers are too goddamn good tonight, I’m watching Deadwood.
Deadwood? Well, stop watching the A’s game already.
isn’t watching the A’s watching deadwood?
I win.
outs are like bullets in a colt 45 and we still have all 6 to shoot with!
These Mariner announcers are getting far too gleeful for me.
“BOLDLY walks off the mound!! You’re the man alright!!”
That was Glen & Ray, our announcers…
Johnson’s totally gonna blow this game.
the idea that he was coming in later made milone cough up the lead
tee hee.
That’s more like it, Jim Johnson. How about another in the 8th?
It makes zero sense for the Mariners to still have Felix Hernandez in the game.
here we go. rally toe.
yup. get ’em sogy!
* here.
lowrie and outside.
let’s go josh!!!
That looked low
lowrie walked on that.
At least Moss gets the bloop
let’s go moss!!!
nice.
it’s up to you potencia, no presión.
Chased Felix at least
he’s not such a cretinous looking guy without the hat on.
oh wait. neck tattoo.
dead fuld walking…
this goes … *
“It’d be great to give (Felix Hernandez) a no-decision tonight.” — Ray Fosse, with the A’s down 6-0 in the 8th.
It would!
really? how great?
on a scale of one million to one billion?
Dibs.
<3
asvd
“I mean you talk about King Felix, and that good breaking ball, and about how he’s in line for the win right now and if the A’s scored six runs and didn’t give up any runs, that’s a, you know, that’s a no-decision, and it’s just such a dangerous breaking ball, and what do you think about that?”
All we need here is two bloops and a blast… and another bloop.. and a blast.
Thanks, and go As.
Kouz scores the winning run for the Rangers in the bottom of the 12th… That’s not something I was expecting to hear this season
No more shutout!
HAHAHAHA SUCK IT, FELIX.
Thanks, and go As.
lol
what??
Now the A’s are one swing from that Felix Hernandez no-decision.
Phew. Staying alive
No, Ray. You don’t have to give Cespedes a lot of credit. He tried to fucking GIDP on the first pitch he saw.
Thanks, and go As.
this is getting good.
HOW BIG WOULD A BASE HIT BE HERE, RAY?
Thanks, and go As.
Nice inning, A’s
sigh…the shoddy defense really hurts now.
A’s haven’t looked sharp defensively or on the bases this season. I was half expecting a TOOTBLAN there on the Moss bloop.
yeah, sigh.
That didn’t look like much of a swing from Almonte
figures. dinner bell rang. bring the W in for me FKrs.
Hey, this guy pitching for us is pretty good. Who’s that?
Totally unclutch.
Fk all the stats and stuff…what does his smile look like?
Presumably Jaso and Barton to lead off the ninth against Rodney…there has to be at least one BB there.
Or a double!
…and a popup
Well, Jaso FKed up…
I’ll be Ray Fosse for a second. How great would it be if Daric Barton tied it right here?
It would be great but so would flying unicorns and world peace.
So Coco is going to pinch hit, huh…
Thanks, and go As.
One last good-bye before the DL
see you sunday the 27th coco! we’ll be in houston!
Following the A’s injury pattern to a T so far
Ugh. Scored 4 runs just to watch that douchenozzle do that stupid arrow celebration.
That was decidedly undramatic.
It’s just a good thing we brought in a completely unprepared Coco Crisp so we can’t retroactively DL him.
I don’t know about you guys, but we were winning before new guy showed up.
Hey Coco, I know you haven’t seen the field since Sunday, but we need you to go out and hit against a guy with a fantastic offspeed pitch and a decent fastball. Thanks.
Thanks, and go As.
We really could have used a grand slam from our #9 batter
well, crap.
Do the A’s face King Felix every week?
I’m just curious because he doesn’t get a lot of coverage on the site…what do you folks think about Daric Barton?
Quick question…what’s a Fuld?
Another quick question…how big is the universe?
FULD is an acronym, standing for Fear Uncertainty Lozenges and Doubt.
I figured as much.
There is an art to ascertaining exatly when to play good ol Sam. Basically you gotta know when to Fuld him.
The Mariners and A’s have the two best run differentials in the AL.
You will probably not guess who is third.
You probably will guess who is last.
I don’t guess…I get even.
Brewers astros
No, Ed…the answer is not a black box.
ping!
If the black box was in the shallow end of a pool, Daric Barton would the man for the job.
See, no matter the subject you can work Daric Barton in to it.
73 boats and planes start converging on Ed.
And CNN will be there with 24/7 coverage.
At least one* of those teams is not in the AL.
* Depending on what year this is.
Pete Vuchavich says what?
oops reading comp fail
i said brewers in my head too. it’s one of those stop stop post post stop stop post post Q: what do you put in a toaster? A: milk.
or something like that.
Its gotts be Detroit, yeah? but that is not surprising
They are +1.
ChiSox are +9.
I really like the title that FSU came up with for this game thread.
Thanks. I totally kill with the over-40 men who never leave the house market.
You know your audience.
I love it too. So, also the over-50 women who only leave the house to go to the ballpark.
Adding fuel to the DB fire
That’s accurate.
That’s about as close as Melvin gets to putting a guy on blast.
Adios, Sam Fuld.
who?
The stupid on Twitter is overwhelming.
A’s Talk should be a mess too.
Especially Ann Killion.
Who or what is Ann Killion?
She’s actually a columnist for the SF Chronicle.
Probably actually the best current Chron sports columnist (faint praise).
I’m not sure I’d consider that praise at all, faint or otherwise. That’s like being called the nicest smelling pile of shit.
Thanks for the memory
We should just play Daric Barton at every bombaclaat position then. Maybe they’ll DFA Gentry to keep Barton next.
Shocking.
Who had 4/12 in the pool?
I had the under
Who had 4/12 in the pool?
The Ynoa-Anderson exacta paid 500:1.
Initially I thought you had that backwards until I realize that I read that backwards.
TINSTAAPP
