    Moss delivers an RBI single on the 11th pitch of his AB. Dinner at Francesco’s!

    I have not been to Francesco’s in about 15 years, but I bet it looks exactly the same as the last time I visited, which in turn was exactly the same as the previous time I went, circa 1978.

          • dmoas Apr 9,2014 11:13 am || Up

            Of all the rules to be concerned about, that wasn’t one of them. The original rule made sense and was reasonably easy to apply.

        • Soaker Apr 9,2014 11:14 am || Up

          The definition of a “catch” has not changed. The interpretation of a “voluntary and intentional” release in the rule has always been lenient. If we’re going to enforce the letter of the law due to replay, Suzuki arguably did not complete a rulebook catch.

          In establishing the validity of the catch, the fielder shall hold the ball long enough to prove that he has complete control of the ball and that his release of the ball is voluntary and intentional. If the fielder has made the catch and drops the ball while in the act of making a throw following the catch,the ball shall be adjudged to have been caught.

          If the neighborhood play at second base should continue as before, I’d prefer this go along those lines as well.

            When football adopted replay you started seeing a tendency among officials not to blow the whistle as quickly. It wasn’t (as far as I know) part of an official new approach, more an unspoken thing, because while a replay reversal can always undo action which transpired, it cannot correct for action which stopped due to a whistle. I suspect we’ll see the same thing in baseball, a tendency for umps to keep a play live then in doubt, because it’s more easily corrected by replay that way.

              if I am the batting team, and the play is called out and upon review called safe, I am happy enough that I don’t have an out.

              If I am the pitching team and the initial call is out and upon review I am reasonably happy with placing the runners.

                if I am the batting team, and the play is called out and upon review called safe, I’m not so happy with placement. There are several incidences where it costs you a run.

                  Maybe I am moving goalposts, maybe I am being unclear. Let me try again.

                  When the play starts and the umpire sees what he thinks is a catch and drop on transfer, and would have called it out in 2013, 2012, 2011 etc, s/he makes the call OUT, like he would have last year.

                  Fine. call it that way. If upon review its changed, fine, better to get a runner on.

                  I have $5. No I don\'t.
                • AV Apr 9,2014 11:48 am || Up

                  is it more accurate to rewind a play and put runners in correct bases after an incorrect “safe” is reviewed into an “out”, or to predictively move runners up on an incorrect “out” reviewed into a “safe”? and with more accuracy, would both sides tend to agree with the corrected call more?

                  *i’m* AV. alex vause. put this loon in psych before she hurts someone.
                • dmoas Apr 9,2014 11:57 am || Up

                  I don’t think that’s an adequate measuring stick. In the past that call still could have been overturned without review and they’d still not be happy with he placement. If it’s about getting things right with minimal impact on the game, you should err on the side of continuation when possible. The real issue is deciding what creates minimal impact and I think that’s something that time and experience should settle. So for now, do what you’d normally do and at the end of the season, as a group, go over how those calls impacted the game and THEN adjust where you see fit.

                • Future Ed Apr 9,2014 12:03 pm || Up

                  but then is the “standard of proof” to overturn a call the same? if we assume all transfer drop situations are “not out” situations, then do we have to have clear and convincing evidence that it was a transfer to make it “out?”

                  I have $5. No I don\'t.
                • dmoas Apr 9,2014 12:12 pm || Up

                  In most cases it’s been pretty clear even on review, so I’d say yes, in theory. But again, that’s something that should be settled as a result of experience, erring on the side of the current status quo for now.

                • Future Ed Apr 9,2014 12:15 pm || Up

                  well, In my opinion, there was clear and convincing evidence Hamilton caught the ball last night and lost it in the transfer, so I ma not putting it past mlb to screw things up.

                It looked like Lloyd McClendon thought his baserunner should have been entitled to advance at least one base on the Hamilton play last night. And Scioscia was definitely happy with the non-advance of the runner.

            • dmoas Apr 9,2014 11:24 am || Up

              I’m okay with that methodology as long as the umps are allowed to immediately review it to confirm their calls. Maybe even go so far as to make a signal after the call so that part of the play gets immediately reviewed while in action.

          • dmoas Apr 9,2014 11:22 am || Up

            Well, it did get released voluntarily and intentionally. It just didn’t make it into his other hand.

            I want the neighborhood play gone. I want the player to have the right to the back of the base and the runner the front. And I want to remove the ability for the runner, particularly AFTER they’re considered OUT, to influence the fielder in any way.

          • elcroata Apr 9,2014 11:26 am || Up

            I’d argue that Suzuki’s release of the ball was both voluntary and intentional. His hand coordination was shitty, but there was nothing unintentional or forced about it.

            1) Whenever this rule was written, the point was just to try to express the common sense understanding, shared by everyone, of what a catch is, and it should be interpreted in that light.
            2) Requiring the “release” to be “voluntary and intentional” is consistent with how it’s always been called. In all these cases that are being messed up this year, the “release” is voluntary and intentional, its just botched. The rule as written is saying it’s still a catch if if it’s dropped on the transfer.

              simeone’s game in his words: press hard up the field to “asphyxiate” them. when barça broke through, double back and hold them near AM’s own area. and concede the wings as a lesser of two evils. and that they won because they were more “convinced” of their plan, which is probably a snipe at tata “days are numbered” martino.

              gotta wonder then, if AM wasn’t going to fight the wings, what tata saw: “Cross examined about why Alexis hadn’t been introduced earlier in the game, Martino responded by explaining that in his mind, the decisive battles were centrally between the two sides, rather than on the flanks.” *

      I picked up her link to this blog from a guy playing in the Italian league. It could be interesting to follow through their season. I’d like to see him write more about how the game is different there, and what kind of fans they get.

        There’s a book called baseballissimo, which is both rather entertaining and pretty accurate

      One of these years some team is going to actually show positive results from a “Closer By Committee” approach. Maybe this A’s bullpen is the group to do so, and maybe the circumstances and personnel are such that Melvin can let go of the need to predefine everyone’s role so rigidly and just play matchups.

      • James V. Apr 10,2014 10:32 am || Up

        I hope so. There are not a ton of guys out there who are really the best for just the 9th inning no matter who they’re due to face. You have the guys who racked up 200-300 saves and…a lot of meh afterward.

        Just look at this list, post-Rivera. Many of those guys aren’t even currently closers.

  126. AV Apr 10,2014 9:56 am

    (outside of whether donaldson’s call was correct or not) it’s interesting to me how well the reviews in the 9nth went because they weren’t laden with the whole challenge-strategy side of reviews.

    (otoh, i’m not sure how the 3rd base one is credited to melvin’s challenge, when i thought after the 6th mgrs lost the challenge and all reviews were ump-generated.)

    • dmoas Apr 10,2014 10:02 am || Up

      There’s a stupid condition that if the manager hasn’t used his challenge yet, he has to do the challenging, not the umps.

      • AV Apr 10,2014 10:23 am || Up

        my cynical bone is beginning to itch with: someone who doesn’t want reviews sandbagged the concept with useless and counterintuitive rules just so fans would reject the whole thing.

        why can’t it just be: there was a close play, ump crew not sure, reasonable doubt (possibly brought out by mgr complaint within reason*)? ok, let’s check vid. here’s the call. and done in a minute.

        * i do understand some mgrs are going to abuse this and complain about everything, but then again, they used to anyway. hi shosha!

        • dmoas Apr 10,2014 10:26 am || Up

          Yup. I’m with you. They claim there aren’t many plays requiring review, so just let the umps make the call with the notion that if there’s ANY doubt, review it. Or before tossing someone over a disputed, reviewable call, review it.

        could blame fuld. IIRC he stopped at 2nd when they were bobbling the relay and lowrie wanted to go one more, so lowrie got hung up going back to 1st.

        And because this situation was about 10% as important as was the case for Barton’s gaffe.

      first dr k logged in as ed, then…

      weak throw from outfield, last runner thought he had one more base, got into rundown, lead runner thought he’d go home from that, got into rundown. only lead runner out, runners on 2nd and 3rd.
