      So thankfully Moss is at first instead of DHing. That way, after the first inning, he can go play LF and Barton can replace Cespedes in the lineup.

        Seems like it would be worth getting Gentry back on the roster ASAP. Maybe they’re giving it a day to decide whether they’re going to DL Crisp, or need to DFA Fuld or Barton or whoever to make room.

    We have a Kurt Suzuki sighting, his fifth start in seven games for the Twins. I thought they were planning on using Pinto as their front line catcher.

    Maybe the thing that needs to be limited is the manager’s opportunities to delay the game while deciding whether to challenge. The bit about going on to the field and looking into the dugout is getting tiresome already.

      • dmoas Apr 7,2014 1:41 pm || Up

        Agreed. The Manager’s challenge is the problem. Either have the eye in the sky make the call OR allow the umps on the field call for one. Both still have issues: Managers will delay hoping for the eye to make a call or umps will be less likely to overturn their own brethan’s gaffs.

    • dmoas Apr 7,2014 1:39 pm || Up

    • dmoas Apr 7,2014 1:55 pm || Up

      That’s kind of situation where he needs to be half way. If it drops in and he’s on the bag they could nail him at third. He still screwed up by not getting back to the bag though. Stupid to try to compare the two situations though.

  23. mikeA Apr 7,2014 2:11 pm

    Definitely looks fair, looked like it disappeared behind the foul pole, might get fucked by bad camera angles…

    • Future Ed Apr 7,2014 2:17 pm || Up

      blows my mind that in a billion dollar industry they can’t put cameras in places that will show where the ball went. There are few areas that need high concentration.

      I have $5. No I don\'t.
      • dmoas Apr 7,2014 2:20 pm || Up

        That’s definitely something they should do. And maybe change the color of the pole to make it easier to see the white baseball. There are key spots where having an appropriate angle down the lines that are a must. And they should remain stationary and super high-res 8k camera feeds.

  24. mikeA Apr 7,2014 2:13 pm

    Definitely should be a HR.

  25. dmoas Apr 7,2014 2:13 pm

  26. James V. Apr 7,2014 2:13 pm

    There’s a good replay down the line that makes it look like the ball skimmed the edge of the foul pole. Path changed slightly.

    • dmoas Apr 7,2014 2:15 pm || Up

      If were a home run, that would be the only potential thing I could see. Either way, I didn’t see anything to confirm or overturn it. Calling it “Stand” is probably the right call there.

      • mikeA Apr 7,2014 2:16 pm || Up

        You could definitely see it disappear in the first angle they showed. Completely ridiculous not to overturn that.

        • dmoas Apr 7,2014 2:18 pm || Up

          I saw one view where it was briefly in front of the pole before it disappears. And several others where the shadows fuck with it too much.

        • James V. Apr 7,2014 2:18 pm || Up

          I think that was more an effect of the shadows being exactly the way they were.

      • James V. Apr 7,2014 2:17 pm || Up

        One thing’s for sure – it did not pass inside the foul pole.

  27. mikeA Apr 7,2014 2:13 pm

  28. James V. Apr 7,2014 2:14 pm

    The ball definitely did not pass inside the “fence” part of the pole, so they must have decided it barely missed touching it.

        • dmoas Apr 7,2014 2:22 pm || Up

          I think a handful of calls they’re allowed to do on their own. Which should be all of them any time. But I think that’s where they eventually get to, but not this year.

  31. mikeA Apr 7,2014 2:19 pm

    You know, there’s an argument it would be better to have the field umps do it, because they at least have to stand out there and face the manager/team if they refuse to overturn a missed call because of some bs conclusion that the evidence isn’t good enough.

    • dmoas Apr 7,2014 2:21 pm || Up

      For me the issue is that they can’t discuss the decisions afterward. That’s a huge issue for me. Go ahead and have someone in NY make that call, but make them accountable for their calls.

      • mikeA Apr 7,2014 2:22 pm || Up

        Yeah, or just an opportunity for fans to pelt them with tomatoes or something.

        • dmoas Apr 7,2014 2:23 pm || Up

          I’d be down for that. Make it part of the post game festivities except for on their getaway days.

  32. dmoas Apr 7,2014 2:22 pm

    Well that helps make up for his earlier base running gaff.

    • mikeA Apr 7,2014 2:24 pm || Up

      If Barton hit that ball, no one would praise him because he wouldn’t because he’s never hit a ball that well in his entire career.

  33. dmoas Apr 7,2014 2:24 pm

    I suspect the long delay hurt the twins more. They’d probably be winning to give up the HR for the removal of the delay.

  34. James V. Apr 7,2014 2:25 pm

    Here’s proof Lowrie’s ball did not pass in front of the foul pole. Still MIGHT have clipped it.

  35. MikeV Apr 7,2014 2:27 pm

          And I know he had the wrist problem last year but if you go back to the final month of 2012 and add up all his stats since then, you get this:

          PA 598
          AB 531
          R 69
          H 110
          2B 23
          3B 2
          HR 16
          RBI 69
          BB 56
          SO 122
          AVG .207
          OBP .281
          SLG .348
          OPS .629

          Defense or not, those aren’t numbers that can justify anyone keeping a full-time job in the outfield. It’d be difficult to even justify it these days for most middle infielders.

            And yet for last year fangraphs has him as 2.7 WAR, and baseball-reference as 2.2 WAR, which given his amount of playing time (441 PA) makes him a league-average starter according to their measures.
            I take no position on the sanity of that measurement.

              If he had the exact line he had last year (.226/.307/.379)* it would be really frustrating to watch, but reasonably valuable. I wouldn’t mind sending him down for a bit to try to figure something out, but choosing Fuld long term would be insane.

              *Fuld is .234/.313/.332 for his career with much worse defensive numbers than Reddick.

      The problem (for those of us who’d like to see an ownership change to make a new park in Oakland happen) is that the A’s are profitable for Fisher right now. Every single year, revenues exceed expenditures and a healthy working margin returns to ownership. From Fisher’s point of view it is a profitable business investment, and fairly low risk too, since the revenue sharing checks are reliable. Fisher has no incentive to change anything (including even investing in a new San Jose park) unless he’s convinced it will pay off better than he gets right now at essentially no cost beyond his original purchase price.
