MLB TV free game of the day, for the NRAFs.
is coco broken or something?
No, but…
Thanks, and go As.
I’m confused. I thought this game was a 1pm our time. So why are we having afternoon coffee?
I was confused, I read 110 and figured it was 10 AM
great. now i’m gonna be up all night with the jitters.
Because I have to be alert to get the full benefit of all the broadcast erudition.
Coco got a cortisone shot in his left wrist.
Cespedes limping but in the lineup.
So thankfully Moss is at first instead of DHing. That way, after the first inning, he can go play LF and Barton can replace Cespedes in the lineup.
Seems like it would be worth getting Gentry back on the roster ASAP. Maybe they’re giving it a day to decide whether they’re going to DL Crisp, or need to DFA Fuld or Barton or whoever to make room.
Cespedes DL. Calling it.
Thanks, and go As.
That’s like calling the sun to rise.
He has to be out of the lineup and day-to-day for at least 2 days first.
5 to 7 days out of the lineup, then a brief appearance in a game and then on the DL.
Pinch runner in a game where we are down by 3…
We have a Kurt Suzuki sighting, his fifth start in seven games for the Twins. I thought they were planning on using Pinto as their front line catcher.
Everyone succumbs to the siren song of Suzuki
It sound like “PoooooooooooOooooOooooooOooooookah shell”
I DONT LIKE TOMATOES IN OMELETTES, MATT.
Me neither. I also don’t like omelettes.
Prefer any other egg prep before the omelette.
I just don’t like egg. Well, I do the first time. Less so the rest of the day.
Tortilla de patata, mmmmmm
I’ve finally figured out the secret to omelette making. Got ’em working twice in a row for the first time in my life.
poor millionaires
Thanks, and go As.
what the font? (or is it just me?)
font seems fine to me
yeah, restart fixed it.
Heh. Now I hope a train comes.
Yankee/Jeter highlight before 1st pitch. Thanks Vince.
Thanks, and go As.
it wasn’t even a jeter highlight. he scored from 2nd on a single. like you are supposed to.
He scored the right way though.
are the a’s going to give him a present? can’t remember if they gave mariano one.
Rivera got the surfboard and some wine, I think.
Maybe the A’s will bring Jeremy Giambi back to help reenact that play, since they seem to like showing it so often on TV.
I really hope they don’t. Really.
oh come on. we can be obsequious too. like, we could all start saving now and give him as big a #2 as we can collaborately make.
when did this gifting thing start, btw? did, say, ripken do a gimme tour? or is it something the yankees started?
I don’t know. I seem to remember ripkin. Didn’t Clemmons get stuff too? but then didn’t retire?
I think we should give him a free shot at the soda machine.
free? no way. one dollar. welcome to oakland.
So we get our first look at the new A’s road caps today.
That was fair. Hit the yellow.
Maybe the thing that needs to be limited is the manager’s opportunities to delay the game while deciding whether to challenge. The bit about going on to the field and looking into the dugout is getting tiresome already.
which is why they shouldn’t have a say. let the eye in the sky do it
Agreed. The Manager’s challenge is the problem. Either have the eye in the sky make the call OR allow the umps on the field call for one. Both still have issues: Managers will delay hoping for the eye to make a call or umps will be less likely to overturn their own brethan’s gaffs.
Yes. They need to either immediately go out there and challenge or relinquish the ability to do so. Shit or get off the pot.
Yeah.
sexy feet
Can we keep this Kevin kid? have him pitch to us?
this ain’t so bad right now.
Josh Reddick is 1-for-1 with an RBI since the haircut and shave.
ta ta-da ta-ta: two hits?
I love it when ken says “playing in for a bunt that wont come/be happening”
Bunt would have been a good idea there…
better than nothing?
Imagine the fury right now if Barton had been doubled off and not Callaspo
Thanks, and go As.
Guess it’s okay when Callaspo makes a baserunning mistake, but not Barton. No sir!
That’s kind of situation where he needs to be half way. If it drops in and he’s on the bag they could nail him at third. He still screwed up by not getting back to the bag though. Stupid to try to compare the two situations though.
and my point is made.
Thanks, and go As.
Really? You think you made a point?
Someone said to me that at least Callaspo gets on base, which is kind of a requirement first. I went ahead and shared the career OBPs for both Barton and Callaspo in response.
that is not the suzuki I remember
yeah you do. it’s “new team” suzuki.
right.
The A’s should sign him to a consecutive 2 week contracts.
Looks like that should be a HR for Lowrie. Need a better look, though.
Definitely looks fair, looked like it disappeared behind the foul pole, might get fucked by bad camera angles…
blows my mind that in a billion dollar industry they can’t put cameras in places that will show where the ball went. There are few areas that need high concentration.
That’s definitely something they should do. And maybe change the color of the pole to make it easier to see the white baseball. There are key spots where having an appropriate angle down the lines that are a must. And they should remain stationary and super high-res 8k camera feeds.
Definitely should be a HR.
I keep seeing the ball in front of the pole. I think it’s foul.
i though i saw a white dot over the shady side of yellow. but it coulda been a puthy cat.
whatever. he scores anyway.
There’s a good replay down the line that makes it look like the ball skimmed the edge of the foul pole. Path changed slightly.
If were a home run, that would be the only potential thing I could see. Either way, I didn’t see anything to confirm or overturn it. Calling it “Stand” is probably the right call there.
You could definitely see it disappear in the first angle they showed. Completely ridiculous not to overturn that.
I saw one view where it was briefly in front of the pole before it disappears. And several others where the shadows fuck with it too much.
I think that was more an effect of the shadows being exactly the way they were.
One thing’s for sure – it did not pass inside the foul pole.
Unbelievable.
But at least inconsequential.
The ball definitely did not pass inside the “fence” part of the pole, so they must have decided it barely missed touching it.
Fortunately Donaldson & Moss make the Lowrie call irrelevant.
They said that was an umpire review and not a challenge?
Thanks, and go As.
yes.
aren’t all HR calls umpire reviews?
No idea, is that how they work the fair/foul calls?
Thanks, and go As.
I think a handful of calls they’re allowed to do on their own. Which should be all of them any time. But I think that’s where they eventually get to, but not this year.
You know, there’s an argument it would be better to have the field umps do it, because they at least have to stand out there and face the manager/team if they refuse to overturn a missed call because of some bs conclusion that the evidence isn’t good enough.
For me the issue is that they can’t discuss the decisions afterward. That’s a huge issue for me. Go ahead and have someone in NY make that call, but make them accountable for their calls.
Yeah, or just an opportunity for fans to pelt them with tomatoes or something.
I’d be down for that. Make it part of the post game festivities except for on their getaway days.
Well that helps make up for his earlier base running gaff.
If Barton hit that ball, no one would praise him because he wouldn’t because he’s never hit a ball that well in his entire career.
Heh.
I suspect the long delay hurt the twins more. They’d probably be winning to give up the HR for the removal of the delay.
Here’s proof Lowrie’s ball did not pass in front of the foul pole. Still MIGHT have clipped it.
Make that “inside” the foul pole.
Anyway, if you think the replay was conclusive enough to overturn that to a home run, you’re wrong.
Yeah, I retract my indignation.
Here’s a pat on the shoulder. ;-)
Wait, aren’t the FieldFX cameras crazy high def AND all over the field? Can’t those be used?
Thanks, and go As.
twins trade eduado nunez from yankees (to AAA) for A lefty reliever didn’t catch the name
A) How did the Twins trade a Yankees player. B) Where did they trade him to?
yeah, written poorly
Sorry, those road hats look awful. They should either be all white or all yellow.
I agree. I don’t care for both colors in the stitching like that.
My personal preference would be to replace the green with gold for the road. Gold base hats with green brim and gold sleeves.
Something like this? Sold by Hat Club.
Yup.
I just placed an order for it. I signed up for their membership when I got the TATC hat, which I think saves about $7 per hat. Had this in my cart, didn’t purchase, and within a few days they sent me a code for an extra 5% more off.
Yuck. That’s worse than the Astros’ orange ones.
You take that back.
Orange for a hat color is just bad, period.
let’s go deer hunting…
Um, no. You should get your eyes checked.
I like it, I don’t mind orange though.
Milo just got this one:
At first I didn’t care for that one. But it’s seriously grown on me.
I like that much more than the green version. May have to consider it.
Yep, bought this one in AZ. Love, love, love the elephant design and this had a way better color scheme than others I’ve seen, even though I wasn’t a huge fan at first.
Well I know that. But it’s more an issue of being conceived during the Eisenhower administration. We prefer our navy blues and grays, and forest greens, as primary colors, and think bright colors should be used as trim only.
yup
white hats on gray unis? yellow, maybe. but white hats would call for gold tops.
I meant the “A’s” part of the hat.
ah. yes.
twins guy said Vuc and Chip hale were in on the design.
They should have their opinions removed.
Might be good for this game, but why on earth is Otero the long man?
gotta save Pomeranz, duh.
Thanks, and go As.
everyone taken their blood pressure medication?
Um… yeah… they must be smoking the same shit that Fosse was yesterday when he claimed that a ball bouncing off the pitching rubber or base and caught would be an out.
I’ll bet they’re wrong.
Aw shit. Is LD in the game?
I haven’t enjoyed the innings since the top of the third
How’s this inning shaping up for you?
better
OBEY THE BEARD
Has he faced a lefty?
Yeah he’s 0-3
Thanks, and go As.
there is the suzuki I remember
I assume with the “shut down” ™ bullpen, we will see gregerson, cook doolittle Johnson today?
I’d prefer to see Otero at this point.
All these guys need to go back to the old style flip-down sunglasses. The inability to deal with the sun is getting ridiculous.
I don’t think getting hit there is likely to lead to anything serious.
i was outside removing my battery, where did he get hit? Is it just an excuse to get a bad SS out of the game?
No he was definitely hurt. Bounced and hit him on the outside of the knee. I think just very painful because it hit the bone sticking out.
good. As long as it wasn’t the hand
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too. A day off tomorrow to rest and ice it and he should be okay.
Jozy Altidore was demoted to the Sunderland U21 team and did not take the field for the first team against Tottenham.
Sunderland were destroyed 5-1.
I wonder if Jozy is regretting that move yet.
Thanks, and go As.
It’s time to stop the GBA singing during the 7th.
Thanks, and go As.
I assume its for opening day and post season and new york
i’m reading how the anthem at baseball started very much like GBA, shortly after a terrorist act, and during the 7IS. didn’t move to pregame till WWII.
i honestly don’t get national anythings in non-internatinal affairs. two countries meet? fine. let those interested reprazent. otherwise it’s just sports, nationality has nothing to do with it.
That said, I could. Not. Get. The anthem out of my head on opening morning and afternoon.
And then I caught myself openly rooting for the USMNT and thought, uh-oh i guess it’s finally time to apply for citizenship.
it gets me more that they ask me to stand and remove my cap.
Its not the fucking anthem.
Yeah, I stand (because it’s the 7th inning stretch) but the cap stays on.
Most teams do it for all Sunday games too, plus national holidays. It’s not going away even after the Selig departure.
I wouldn’t even stand for it.
Yes please. Fuck that song.
I’d much rather hear “America the Beautiful” instead, which has a much more pleasant melody than the other one.
And yes, there is no reason at all to remove one’s hat for any song other than our National anthem.
shut down(tm)
Reddick’s got to work on that tan where his hair used to be.
I wonder of Lowrie is receiving the Last Rites in the clubhouse yet.
I know it’s his first game of the season after the injury in ST, but Cook looks about the same as late last year so far.
And that would be a victory.
Hey win!
Derek Norris without his catcher’s gear:
i believe this to be true.
Top 8th Fielder GIDP, then in bottom 8, bobbles a sac bunt then flip it passed Donnie Murphy(DONNIE MURPHY!!) scoring pierzinski. 3-1 Red sox 1 and third noouts bottom 8.
U Conn? U Conn? Wow.
U conn’t believe it?
Most surprising winner in a long time. Oddly, they were very lucky to win the first game, then none of the others were close at the end.
UConn has now won four national titles since Cal last made it to the sweet 16.
That is amazing.
…and may I add, God fking damnit!
At least my ‘Clones fell to the eventual champs.
(Not that it makes any difference. I still can’t get over ISU shooting 6-15 from the foul line in a game they lost by 5 points.)
“Hopefully, I’m at the point where no one thinks about that, but do I know I have an option,” said Reddick, who had an RBI single Monday. “If that is what’s best for the team, they have to do what they’ve got to do. Obviously, I’m not doing the job right now.”
that would be interesting and probably not a horrible move to give Fuld a shot at sticking.
Thanks, and go As.
The question I would have is how does Schlong react. I think he could crawl into his head a little more and never be seen again (except for in screen shots during WWE pay per views.)
If he’s that fragile, he should be gone regardless.
Yep.
And I know he had the wrist problem last year but if you go back to the final month of 2012 and add up all his stats since then, you get this:
PA 598
AB 531
R 69
H 110
2B 23
3B 2
HR 16
RBI 69
BB 56
SO 122
AVG .207
OBP .281
SLG .348
OPS .629
Defense or not, those aren’t numbers that can justify anyone keeping a full-time job in the outfield. It’d be difficult to even justify it these days for most middle infielders.
A quarter of his HRs also came over 2 days. SMH
And yet for last year fangraphs has him as 2.7 WAR, and baseball-reference as 2.2 WAR, which given his amount of playing time (441 PA) makes him a league-average starter according to their measures.
I take no position on the sanity of that measurement.
Ahhh, defense.
If he had the exact line he had last year (.226/.307/.379)* it would be really frustrating to watch, but reasonably valuable. I wouldn’t mind sending him down for a bit to try to figure something out, but choosing Fuld long term would be insane.
*Fuld is .234/.313/.332 for his career with much worse defensive numbers than Reddick.
Yeah, people are falling for the whole “OMG FULD IS GREAT IT’S THE LEGEND!!” crap when he’s never sustained any of it. He will never be worth more than a backup.
I just don’t know if Reddick will ever be worth more than a platoon guy at best.
And I suppose a gentry fuld platoon would result in a fuld heavy line up.
Gentry is probably better on offense against RHP anyway. Having Gentry play every day instead of Reddick might make sense.
ZOMG U GUYZ BREAKING NEWS!!11!one!!!eleven!
wait nevermind.
Thanks, and go As.
The problem (for those of us who’d like to see an ownership change to make a new park in Oakland happen) is that the A’s are profitable for Fisher right now. Every single year, revenues exceed expenditures and a healthy working margin returns to ownership. From Fisher’s point of view it is a profitable business investment, and fairly low risk too, since the revenue sharing checks are reliable. Fisher has no incentive to change anything (including even investing in a new San Jose park) unless he’s convinced it will pay off better than he gets right now at essentially no cost beyond his original purchase price.
He’s also a silent owner. There’s no real reason for him to sell.
Thanks, and go As.
The other half of it is that Kawakami isn’t exactly a reliable source.
You think Kawakami is more reliable than Rich Lieberman, though? Well, yeah. That’s not really up for debate, is it?
Heh. Rich Lieberman. Yeah, there’s no debate. But TK needs to stick to writing about stuff on the field/court.
That’s too bad. Everybody knows how loyal Lacob is to the city of Oakland.
Snerk.
FK the Giants. But she’s right – this is damn cute.
its not. If it were another sick kid it would be. But not this one
#TiredAct?
the kid? I wish him well. I am happy he got to do all this playing. IF it were my kid I would try to get him as much fun as possible including throwing out the first pitch at any game.
but, the make a wish foundation has squandered so many resources with this particular kid and his dad’s fantasy it makes me angry. Angry in a way I should be with a child who is battling/beating leukemia.
i was resentful for the individualized attention until i mentally movd him from the recipient of attention category to the advertising expenses column. aka, gotta spend money to make money. (though maybe by now they could pick some other kid/s to help batkid raise money, etc., and, here’s a thought… show diversity.)
http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304753504579282581883982944
aw crap. paywalled. here.
saw it. Still feel the same way.
log in/pay wall
doesn’t change my opinion if they raised more money. It makes me mad that the adults pour so much attention on this one kid, feel better about themselves and move on.
Southwest has dropped the price on the flight I want down to…. 92 dollars.
WHy the hell can’t they just do the $69 flights dammit. Ugh.
Thanks, and go As.
Because they don’t want to encourage the mile high club. Just road trip instead.
Spoiler: His wife is a longshoreman.
I bet she can totally kick his ass too.
something that only AV will get…
AND IN FON-TANA!!
sunday sunday sunday!
oh good, cockroaches in the garage when i went to transfer laundry from the washer to the dryer.
shit.
Thanks, and go As.
Sickels released his top 20 here. 6 B-‘s, 1 B, and the first straight A (!) I have seen an Athletic get.
Totally caught myself falling into the trap of imagining every one of them hitting their potential ceiling and us taking over the world. Sigh…
I think the last straight A was another SS…
stop.
Swung on and missed. A slider down and away and he just couldnt hold up.
