Hoop Du Jour ← FREE KRAUT!

Hoop Du Jour 506

I got the day off, baby. Hoops tourney on two TVs and drinking before noon. Happy Spring, bitches!

Crazy-good first day of the tournament. I have North Dakota State into the Sweet 16 (#noonecaresaboutyourfantasyteambracket). Hope today is as entertaining. I have concerns about my Heels. My other favorite team in the tournament is University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULA-La), solely because locals refer to it as Ooo-Laa-Laa.

The one time I went to spring training I drove down to Tuscon and saw an A’s vs Rockies game at venerable (i.e. termite-ridden) Hi Corbett Field. The NCAA tournament had just started, so I went down to the front row and hollered at Walt Weiss “Go Tar Heels,” and he gave me a big thumbs up.

Wednesday in Arizona, a very Athletics spring moment: Ryan Cook throwing simulated ABs to Craig Gentry. Sick bay, at least, is in midseason form.

Sonny Gray on the mound for the A’s tonight, in the gloaming at Scottsdale, 6:35 pm. Giants TV crew on CSNBA. Counting by fives that’d put Sonny on 3/21, then 3/26, then 3/31, baby!

Public defenders gone wild: She then calmed down and told police “I’m not worried anymore; give me some cocaine.”

Searching for wreckage in the Roaring Forties sounds tough. Too tough, if you catch my Oceanic 815 drift.

In other March Madness news, they’re halfway through the first round in the drugs versus alcohol bracket. I think Weed is unstoppable in the Illegal Drugs region, should cruise to an easy Final Four berth. But watch out for bourbon in the Hard Alcohol region, badly underseeded as a #5. My dark horse pick to win it all.

      They’ll handle Tulsa. UCLA’s not bad, offense is clicking, they could win a couple this year.

    If you think bourbon at 5 is an underseed, how about scotch at 11?!? I have no idea how someone could look at a first round matchup of scotch vs long island ice tea and decide that “just throw whatever we have into a glass with coke” would be the favorite.

      LIIT had legions of young stupid people with no palates who like to get drunk on its side. Scotch looks good in the next round too. SoCo? Yuck.

          Saw that and edited, sorry. On review, the whole hard alcohol bracket was clearly seeded by someone who does not know how to drink.

                  Since you’re disputing llama’s assertion that “intrinsic value is a myth” (and I do think llama was kidding), you must subscribe to firm foundation theory. As value investors, the Graham/Buffett approach is to determine the intrinsic value of an asset and buy when the market is undervaluing it.

                  I can’t say I’ve ever actually read Graham’s original Security Analysis. But other suggested reading on the subject for a modern audience would include:
                  Burton Malkiel, A Random Walk Down Wall Street
                  William Bernstein, The Four Pillars of Investing
                  Michael Lewis, Moneyball

        Huh. When FSU mentioned it above, he said bourbon at #5. I agree that JD is a pretty shitty bourbon representative to use. Also (from wikipedia):

        Although the product generally meets the regulatory criteria for classification as a straight bourbon, the company disavows this classification and markets it simply as Tennessee whiskey rather than as Tennessee bourbon.

        • DFA Mar 21,2014 12:12 pm || Up

          Agree. JD is also a shitty whiskey.

          Speaking of Bourbon though, have you tried the Costco Bourbon? Pretty decent, especially for the price.

    Good Bloomberg summary of what’s currently known about MH370.

    Engineers at Inmarsat, whose satellite picked up the pings, plotted seven positions for the Boeing Co. 777-200ER on March 8…The plane flew steadily away from the satellite over the equator while pinging…When officials estimated the plane was flying at or near its cruising speed of more than 500 miles an hour, it produced a probable path the engineers were “very confident” about…If the Inmarsat estimates are accurate, it would have been impossible for the plane to have landed before its satellite transmitter sent the final ping at 8:11 a.m., almost seven hours after its last known position as it left Malaysian airspace, according to McLaughlin’s account. Because the 777 burns more fuel at lower altitude, it also suggests the plane remained at cruising altitude.

        I still think that the course changes before the straight line part suggest deliberate actions. My current theory is that one pilot locked himself in the cabin, set it on a course for the South Pole, and depressurized the plane and killed everyone by hypoxia, maybe or maybe not including himself.

          I agree with the pilot suicide theory. All of the mechanical/multiple things going wrong theories require convoluted explanations and scenarios that seem significantly less likely to me than the idea that a pilot would decide to commit suicide and then program a course to one of the most remote regions in the world in order to hide the evidence.

          • AV Mar 21,2014 1:34 pm || Up

            just wondering… what would motivate someone about to commit suicide via plane crash to turn off ACARS or to hide physical evidence? i mean, that’s a little like paying the utility bill before slicing your wrists.

              Anything from being able to collect on an insurance policy to protecting himself and his family from the immense shame, I’d imagine. I don’t know. None of us can understand why a person would commit suicide while simultaneously murdering 200 innocent people and yet it’s happened before.

      1. The Coliseum has the second-most foul territory of any stadium where major league baseball will be played this year. They did a pretty nice job converting Sydney Cricket Grounds for baseball though. Most of it looks like any modern stadium but there’s a section of grandstand that is reminiscent of Churchill Downs, very cool.

      2. Mark Trumbo as your every-day left fielder, Kirk? Uh oh.

      C Jaso
      C Norris

        What is Barton’s role on that team? I’d Vogt for somebody else for #25.

        • lenscrafters Mar 23,2014 2:00 pm || Up

          He makes it because he’s out of options and Vogt isn’t. Also, Moss is pretty poor defensively.

          • Soaker Mar 23,2014 2:16 pm || Up

            My thought is that against RH SP you might want to DH Jaso and catch Vogt. If you want to pinch-hit Norris for Vogt late in the game you can do that without fear of either losing the DH or (shudder) putting Donaldson behind the plate.

            We did see the defensive improvement when Barton played 1B and Moss was in RF late in the season, but with a healthy Reddick that isn’t happening, and anyway Barton didn’t last very long once we got to the ALDS.

            We know Barton can clear waivers; the slight risk of losing him is that he sees an opportunity in another organization and opts to sign a minor league contract elsewhere.

              It seems like they think

              1B Barton
              DH Moss
              C Jaso

              is better overall than

              1B Moss
              DH Jaso
              C Vogt

              I’m not certain Barton can clear waivers again given his mini resurgence last year so I can understand the team’s logic in avoiding the risk of losing players as much as possible especially at the beginning of the season.

              • Soaker Mar 23,2014 2:33 pm || Up

                I’m tempted to go to FK’s never-used polling function to ask the question you pose there. I’d prefer the second even if you’re right about the risk of losing Barton.

                What I discovered Blew. My. Mind. -- Pat Boone
        • andeux Mar 23,2014 2:07 pm || Up

          It actually wouldn’t surprise me if Barton ends up starting at 1B more or less full time, with Moss and Callaspo platooning at DH.
          It partly depends on how they use Jaso, which is still not really clear to me. If Jaso is mostly a DH, then there is a lot less use for Barton, and a lot more use for Vogt.

          It’s even less clear to me what Fuld’s role is, apart from pinch-running. As a good defensive outfielder and a LHB he is awfully redundant on this team. Obviously our starting OF are all injury risks, so I get wanting to keep him around as insurance, but it doesn’t seem like he’ll ever get in the lineup if they’re healthy.

          TINSTAAFK
          • lenscrafters Mar 23,2014 2:14 pm || Up

            They want to keep Fuld in the organization for CF depth because there isn’t any in AAA. He makes the team now so they can bypass the opt out, and then gets optioned out when Gentry is ready which could be as soon as April 5th.

            • andeux Mar 23,2014 2:33 pm || Up

              It looks like if Fuld wants to opt out, he will still be able to do so if he clears waivers and gets outrighted, since he has > 3 years service time.

              I agree with your point about wanting to put off those sort of risks for as long as possible, though, since other injuries may happen.

                  I think so. He was optioned in 2008, 2009, and 2010.

                  I see. I was under the impression they were keeping Fuld over Taylor, because Fuld can still be kept in the organization after Gentry gets back but I guess not. Now I don’t see why they picked up Fuld in the first place.

Seeing a Pac-12 team in the Final Four (which rarely happens anyway) doesn’t mean anything to me one way or the other because I’m fully invested in the A’s season by then.

    So I went to Phoenix Muni for the last time today. Sat in the third row slightly offset behind home, so I may have been on TV but couldn’t confirm. Chavez looked real nice until he hit a wall and everything was getting crushed. Junior Lake killed all 3 of his homers. A’s had like 5 shots to the warning track. Lowrie’s error was actually a pretty decent play that Moss couldn’t dig.

    I threw for the radar gun for the first time in a long while and nearly threw my arm out, but got a respectable 73. I could be Wakefield without the knuckle!

    Ken signed my book yesterday and I got a picture. Always fun. Rollie, Blue Moon Odom, and a couple of others (including Fergie Jenkins today) spent all 9 innings signing stuff for charity on the concourse. Can only imagine how quickly that becomes tiring.

      I’d assume that in the regular season they’ll have a good signaling system set up to let Melvin know whether to use a challenge, especially that early in the game. Apparently it will be a new managerial arguing technique to “turn the umpire” so that his back is to the dugout and the manager, while stalling by arguing, can look over his shoulder and get the thumbs-up or thumbs-down.

        My understanding is you can’t have them review after you argue the call.

        • Soaker Mar 24,2014 3:56 pm || Up

          You can still argue, but as before you can’t argue after the review has been completed (which is why Angel Hernandez immediately ejected Melvin from the game in Cleveland).

          The way the Cardinals describe it:

          Aldrete will be what Matheny called “the conduit” between him and the video room. When he goes out to argue a disputed call, Matheny may not know if it will be an official challenge, so he’ll have to position himself where he can see the dugout while talking to the umpire. Aldrete then can remove his hat if the video room says he should challenge or give thumbs up or thumbs down. If the video room says the call was right, Matheny can shift from arguing to complimenting the umpire and return without using a challenge.

        Food for StatGuy thought: If two guys (one lefty, one righty) have similar numbers in a particular platoon situation, wouldn’t it be better to use the pitcher’s splits to determine which one you use? The theory being, if the pitcher does worse against righties, the guy batting righty would have an advantage even though their individual stats against that pitcher’s type are the same? In other words, is it the individual splits themselves or the combination of splits that matter most?

        • vignette17 Mar 25,2014 4:18 pm || Up

          I like this.

        • MikeV Mar 25,2014 6:09 pm || Up

          Wild guess, but I’d assume it would have to be a pretty significant split, especially in this specific scenario when Barton has an .819 OPS and Callaspo’s is .766

          And I have to say: mikev is one of my favorite people on here -slusser.

            A lefty pitcher that does well against lefties, I’d rather have the righty bat against him if they anywhere near close.

            • MikeV Mar 25,2014 9:48 pm || Up

              but that’s the thing. Lefty pitchers tend to do well against lefty hitters, which is why Barton’s reverse split is somewhat rare

              And I have to say: mikev is one of my favorite people on here -slusser.

              Thanks, and go As.

                  Thanks, and go As.

                • dmoas Mar 26,2014 10:53 am || Up

                  Just because Barton’s reverse splits are rare doesn’t by itself make him necessarily better. A lefty pitcher who does well against lefties is more likely to negate any gain Barton nets in that split, particularly if the pitcher does poorly against right handed hitters.

                • MikeV Mar 26,2014 11:02 am || Up

                  I never said that it did make him better. The numbers show he’s better, regardless of handedness.

                  Again, you’re ignoring that basically EVERY lefty pitcher does better against lefties. The whole concept of LOOGY pitchers, etc.

                  And I have to say: mikev is one of my favorite people on here -slusser.

                  Thanks, and go As.

                • dmoas Mar 26,2014 12:58 pm || Up

                  I’m not ignoring it at all. Some of those pitchers have much bigger splits than others. So it’s altogether possible that against the one’s who have very weak splits, Barton does well. And against those that have extreme splits, he does poorly. In other words, his reverse split oddity is more a product of his competition when he’s been inserted into a the lineup against a lefty rather than some exceptional ability he inherently has against lefties. So you’d see that split fall quickly and dramatically if he faced all lefties.

                • MikeV Mar 26,2014 1:12 pm || Up

                  lol okay man. Barton sucks, whatever.

                • vignette17 Mar 26,2014 2:26 pm || Up

                  I don’t think that’s what dmoas is saying at all. Let’s assume Barton hits for a 125 wRC+ against lefties in general as does Callaspo. (125 number pulled from thin air).

                  Let’s also assume we have a LHP A and a LHP B. Both have FIP- of 100. However they do it differently. LHP A has a FIP- of 100 against both RHB and LHB. LHP B has a FIP- of 120 vs RHB and 80 against LHB.

                  Against LHP A, we don’t care who bats, since both batters hit equally well against lefties and LHP A is equal against both LHB and RHB.

                  However, Dmoas is suggesting that if we face LHP B who is quite good against LHP, we should send out a righty given that your two hitters hit lefties equally well. You are playing to the pitchers’ weakness rather than the hitters’ strength.

                  Of course, this becomes a whole lot more complicated when we don’t have everyone’s true talent splits.

                • MikeV Mar 26,2014 2:39 pm || Up

                  That’s the whole thing. The sample sizes are getting smaller and smaller here.

                  Right. So in the case of small samples, look at both players in a more general form. Righties traditionally being better, lefties not so much. That being said, if we face a lefty with a weird platoon split, I’m all for sending Barton in there. As am I if he’s simple hot in general and Callapso isn’t.

      KPFA has some great music programming that just can’t be found anywhere else, so I hope you’re wrong, but it does seem close to the breaking point.

      I read some background on this one earlier today.

      On some of the previous childish internal pissing matches I couldn’t even figure out which side I would want to support. In this case, it seems the barricader is part of the 9/11 truther and miracle vitamin cure for cancer crowd (which seem to be mercifully mostly absent from KPFA but apparently have a significant presence on other Pacifica stations), while her opponents have the support of both the old left political types and of pretty much all the music programmers that I like. So I hope that the relatively sane people can hold off the nutters.

        Goddamn, that’s a much more grim assessment than I realized, makes it sound like Pacifica’s death is inevitable, and coming fast. I’d be interested to hear EM’s thoughts, but my guess might be that KPFA has enough local support to make a go at it independently, if freed from the national network’s troubles, like:

        A National Public Radio fund drive, such as those heard in Los Angeles on much bigger KCRW and KPCC, is a mix of cloying boosterism, promises of tote bags and begging. A Pacifica fund drive, meanwhile, sounds like a never-ending infomercial for products created by a street-corner lunatic.

          I’ve never been any closer to KPFA than the Brazilian pizza joint down the street, and the only person in that article who I’ve ever met is one of the former board members who used to be my cat sitter. So I don’t know any more than anyone else. It’s definitely not good that they aren’t even getting their basic CPB grants because they couldn’t get their act together to fill out the paperwork. Their audience is aging and not growing (although it is extremely loyal, which is their greatest strength). The most optimistic thing I can say is that I’ve been hearing forecasts of Pacifica’s implosion since 1999, so the fact that they’re still around says something.

    I know squat shit about international soccer, and I vaguely root for Arsenal for no good reason*, and don’t even really know the context here, but this is still hilarious:

    * When I lived in LA this British guy Simon became my pal, and because I was an A’s fan he decided it would be fun to become an Angels fan for shit-talking purposes. Ha ha ha. Since he was a Tottenham guy I was compelled, then, to root for Arsenal out of spite.

      Doesn’t it just replace the existing friendlies, so no extra games?

      I love the idea of an international competition with promotion/relegation, though all the league winners qualifying for the European Cup is a bit odd … I can imagine teams trying to get relegated to qualify from an easier league.

      If this is His will, He's a son of a bitch.
      • Glorious Mundy Mar 27,2014 2:00 pm || Up

        Presumably, though, with 24 teams qualifying for the Euros, almost all of the top division will manage to qualify through the traditional qualifying round. The odd top division team that doesn’t qualify might then make it in by default.

        • Glorious Mundy Mar 27,2014 2:22 pm || Up

          Wait, now I’m confused. According to the BBC (AV’s link):

          The best four teams in each division who have not already qualified for Euro 2020 will play off for the final four places in the tournament.

          But according to the Guardian:

          These divisions will then be divided into four pools – the winners of which will play-off to earn a place in Euro 2020 – offering the chance for a weaker country to qualify from the lower-ranked Division D.

          That’s not the same thing at all.

(Surprising to me was that he was also fairly lukewarm on Montgomery.) Don’t think this will change his mind, but Muir seems pretty set on keeping him. Our incoming freshman class looks pretty solid.

      Yes! It’s been a while since we’ve had enough active threads for you to strut your crazy stuff, and I’ve missed it.

      Kind of impressive that a 5.3 quake didn’t cause any delay at all, not even a few extra seconds between pitches.

      Also that video reminded me how much I like Dodger Stadium, I need to get back to a game there sometime, it’s been since 1989 for me.
