      I have an Ikea EKtop (I think) that i have had for…14 years(oh my). the couch itself is comfortable, and all the cushion covers come off which is nice for those of us with 4 legged friends. Its pretty light, so easy to move.

      Biggest downside is the “bed” park is borderline unsleepable. really soft mattress. I don’t know if there is an upgrade mattress. All my guests use an air areobed.

      I have $5. No I don\'t.

        Great info! I was just thinking of hitting ikea. This is a little used guest room, but to be honest, as far as humans go, the bed will probably get more use than the couch part. The couch will get more use from my dog, who considers the guest room “her room” so it’s nice to know the cushions can be cleaned! I will check on an improved mattress! Thanks :)

          We looked at the CB2 Flex (?), was pretty comfy and felt sturdy, and I’ve seen them on SFCL for way cheaper than in the store btw.

        It’s not that bad. They’ll get faster as they do it more often and according to MLB they’re only predicting 1 review every 6 or 7 games. Given that we’ve had a number of games already and this is the first time it’s come up, that’s not necessarily out of line with that.

      wrote a long linky reply last night and then the computer crashed. bummer.

      quick linkless recap: that center square on croatia is awkward. too low. and maybe unnecessary if they’d matched the number color to the sock color.

      the US all whites are nice. the logo is so 90s though that they oughta send it back to pasadena; why didn’t they keep the centennial logo or build on it?? do wonder what the 2nd/3rd kits look like. also, baby horse, just because it’s fun to say.

      hope brazil gets to use its 3rd kit at noon some sunny day.

      overall, i like most of the nikes better than most of the adidases. adidas is going with stripey themes that just look overworked whereas nike is doing plain fields of color. see spain. nike’s one overindulgence seems to be the oversized ralph lauren style logos. see holland. (and take portugal’s 1st as the exception to prove the rule? i like their green kit though.)

      the adidas stripes work particularly bad on colombia. they blew it there like falcao’s knee. not all polls have closed, but it might be the worst of the bunch.

      on germany, they forgot the yellow (and you know who else spoke german and focused on red, black, and white as a national symbol…?)

      japan is terrible. is than an asterisk behind the logo? and that brushstroke across the back goes exactly nowhere.

      russia is all kinds of wrong. two tone shoulder/body with inner stripes and… tie-die?

      mexico’s powerful double-lightning is completely blech, but i understand wishful thinking.

      neck style seems to be not brand-specific, so we get to see a lot of variation there, and i’m sticking to my guns that v-neck < crew neck < polo collar. another knock on adidas is that they seem to have ironed on logos, rather than embroidered. no me gusta. and imagine my surprise when i walked into big 5 late january and they had already called the final. me gusta. in fact, me gusta mucho.

        Excellent run down, thanks, I look forward to seeing these uniforms in action. Agree that over-large logos look bad, like a crest on a jacket.

        "Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
        • AV Mar 4,2014 11:11 pm || Up

          maybe i meant crest instead of logo. the national federation symbol… it looks so big on the nikes. (as well as the brand logos themselves.)

          and i found a single source for all kits, but you have to click through for pics.

          colombia is saved. cameroon 1st, so ugly!

          germany’s second is pretty… pretty KF’n fascist!

          i like holland’s 2nd in blue. much better than the black with orange trim from last WC. this time spain feel for the black faux pas.

          greece and australia are looking plain but nice.

          costa rica is showing you its left boob.

          argentina’s 2nd is undesirable, but we’ve had worse. it should be plain navy blue. as soon as they mix anything else in, it just looks like it’s trying too hard.

              Like Greece’s minimalism, Cote D’Ivoire’s logo is cool, but the jersey is funky looking.
              What was Belgium thinking, Russia too for that matter?
              As for Germany, like the A’s it’s gold, not yellow, there is the slightest little touch here and there but yeah, I hear ya.
              France is kinda interesting, like the rooster, but all those stripes will wash out from 20 ft away.

                and i hope you only mean the white ones for ghana. i didn’t notice the neck band at first, but i would agree that sometimes a tidy novelty is welcome. the matching shorts/shirt pattern of the red one makes me think if they wanted to wear pajamas that badly, they should have gotten the ones with sushi.

          yes, but i like it.

          i wrote in the version that crashed that while france and the US have essentially the same cut, in context, the US looks great because it tones down that tendency toward overbearing stars and stripes motifs that the world expects from it, but france just looks like oh such precious preppy bastards who can only play in the most perfect of meteorological circumstances and temperamental alignment, always. greece’s cut is similar too and is right in there with the US. actually, greece might be my favorite look this year.

            I’m pretty sure zero of the 4 defenders from today will be in Brazil. Sometimes you need matches like this to cement facts such as John Anthony Brooks not being ready yet and Oguchi Onyewu being terrible and unworthy of a USMNT spot.

      i don’t get this. (apart from the overall irony of HDTV supposedly being about seeing variation better.)

      http://www.sportsgrid.com/soccer/if-you-notice-a-lot-of-monochromatic-uniforms-at-this-years-world-cup-its-because-fifa-made-them-do-it/#16

      say a pixel somewhere on a player’s chest has R=xxx G=xxx B=xxx info, how does that affect the amount of info for a pixel somewhere on the shorts or legs of that player? each pixel needs 3 pieces of information, no matter what the other pix have, right? or does the info come out relative, as: px#1 = such and such, and then px#2=px#1 px#3=px#1, etc? (you do see compression in low res video kind of averaging out a color, but… that’s low res!)

      and it’s not like all the pix on the jersey are going to have the same exact value anyway; some will shine and some will shade.

      AND… what if the player happens to move and forces that pixel he formerly occupied to carry the grass information or the stands or something… STAY STILL PLAYERS!! act like you’re waiting for a daguerrotype to expose… HD technology demands it!

        It’s about compression for transmission, not recovery at the other end.

        • colin Mar 7,2014 5:11 am || Up

          It’s a bit funny that the article framed it as being for HD. I guess the issue is that streaming so much HD video is straining the network, but crappy low-res video could be streamed with minimal compression?

          • ptbnl Mar 7,2014 10:04 am || Up

            I understood it to be saying that if you want to be able to recover full HD at the end of the pipe the signal had better be sufficiently compressible to push over the bandwidth-limited network, and reducing the local color contrasts allows greater compression.

            If this is His will, He's a son of a bitch.
            • AV Mar 7,2014 11:46 am || Up

              i want to understand this better. how does compression work that still allows full HD recovery? it seems if you average out an area of pixels so you don’t have to describe each one, then by interpolating the individual px info at the other end you’re distorting the image with made up info, rather than showing its original definition.

              • elcroata Mar 7,2014 11:54 am || Up

                You don’t average. You still send all the pixels, but instead of, for example, sending 55 values individually, you can send something like 55xR17G122B87 if there are 55 pixels that have the same value. Even if they are not identical, but rather similar, you can be smart about it and send some sort of delta to the previous pixel, saving bits along the way.

                If you have data that is repetitive, then you can compress it down a lot without any loss. Instead of saying “pixel 1 is white, pixel 2 is white, pixel 3 is white…”, you just say “these pixels here are all white”.

                • elcroata Mar 7,2014 11:59 am || Up

                  Yeah, but my algorithm is much better, because yours can only handle three pixels and mine breezes through 55 with ease

                  my original thought was that if they take the entire uniform and describe as “orange” it wouldn’t account for shade, wrinkles, highlights, etc. now i get it that they can slice that uni into, say, 10–20 not-necessarily contiguous but still discreet color areas and still save a lot of info.

                  i’m bad at math…

                  for Y number of pixels covering uniforms (closeup or not), and for 8-bit color (i’m assuming):

                  coloring each pixel individually: (R + G + B) x Y

                  coloring by (my invented) 15-colorzone compression a 3-color uni: ((R + G + B) x Y/15) 3

                  coloring by MI15C compression a 1-color uni: (R + G + B) x Y/15

                  if the area Y covers 1000 px, the full color description is 24000 bits, with compression on 3 colors it’s 48000 bits, and with compression on 1 color it’s 1600 bits. would that be multiplied by 24fps? and multiplied by number of cameras (including your closeup ones) if the outgoing feed is not mixed?

                  just exploring this. so not only should you doubt that because i bad at math… i am also assuming that 8-bit color means each of the RGB channels is composed of 8 bits of info.

    A smart Furdie like Michael Taylor should be at the point where he quits screwing around with baseball and gets on with a successful career in whatever his chosen field would be. In contrast to somebody like Daric Barton, who probably doesn’t have many other good options and has to keep hoping that he’s a “late bloomer”. I’d like to see Barton succeed, it just seems like he deserves an opportunity somewhere other than Oakland (or Sacramento).

      Six years of pro baseball so far, that’s a pretty long time to stay at it without establishing yourself, if you’re hoping to make baseball your lifelong career. OTOH, it may be that what Taylor considers as his likely next steps (presumably broadcasting or coaching) are better served with an improved pro baseball pedigree.

      If Oakland doesn’t value Barton’s skills enough to give him another shot I’m not sure what organization would.

                  Here are her winnings from 2010-2012 compared to those of the players in the comparable position on the PGA money list each year. All three of the PGA guys are respectable names:

                  Robert Garrigus: $1,583,275.

    • FreeSeatUpgrade Mar 5,2014 6:39 pm || Up

      I have some mixed feelings. I don’t like the DAC and wish Oakland had just turned down the fed $ and killed the whole thing. However, there is some truth to the supporters’ case that integrating certain existing communication and info sources could be incredibly important in a natural disaster. Oakland’s tech infrastructure is a hodge podge of (mostly old) systems which simply do not intercommunicate. It is very, very easy to picture how a response to a major quake could be brutally handicapped by scattered fire/rescue assets being unable to find out exactly where to go first.

      The best solution would be a planned City communications integration upgrade, but that’s not what the fed money would do, so ultimately I throw in with the civil libertarians who rightly worry that the DAC concept would inevitably lead to info and data being centralized for ugly purposes (because really that is what happens roughly 100% of the time). But in a major disaster we will be horribly fucked, and it’s very hard to turn down the chance to help mitigate that reality somewhat.

              From mousing over the tOPS+ column, it says that a low value (<100) for a pitcher means that they did better for that split than overall. So I think that it does in fact mean that Saunders has been death against the A's. He also has more starts against Oakland than against any other team, by far.

                  i agree, but i don’t think the argument is that persuasive or accurate (that free will part) when cast that way. and maybe it was posing it as the extreme of slavery that brought out the reactive casting of the complaint as instantly marxist.

                  i think the arguments against spec work are closer and would be more likely to draw an audience to sympathize. these arguments, apart from individuals not being compensated, are about lowering quality of work and devaluing the work itself so people who get paid for it have to take a cut to compete with a free workforce.

      The A’s are definitely selling Oakland more in the last few years. It’s like they woke up to the idiocy of petulance as a marketing strategy. Says more about logic of money-making than commitment to Oakland, though.

      • dmoas Mar 7,2014 8:55 pm || Up

        Is it really idiocy if it was intentional? I’m not saying it is, but it stands to reason to change things up and create some level of scarcity. Stop selling Oakland stuff, people keeps searching for it. Suddenly it pops up again and boom, people just all over it.

      • Englishmajor Mar 7,2014 9:24 pm || Up

        I read it as not so much that Lew is trying to sell Oakland as it is people in the marketing department have decided they won’t get fired for mentioning it.

        • FreeSeatUpgrade Mar 7,2014 11:18 pm || Up

          I really do think ownership has finally admitted (to themselves, only) that the active alienation strategy was a failure. They start from a baseline of annual profitability at basically any ticket sales rate, and…surprise…it turned out it was more profitable to sell more tickets and stuff! The obvious bean counter logic won out over the the thought that the needed to have low attendance to make their stadium case. Every agrees they need a new park; at this point I do believe they’ll be open to whichever city can make a deal pencil out.

  72. Englishmajor Mar 7,2014 9:33 pm

    Meanwhile, what do you all make of the temporary stadium stuff? It seems like a stretch to me…the only advantage I’ve heard about a temporary rather than permanent site is that it might be able to bypass some of the EIR. But surely neither MLB nor the players’ union is going to put up with anything less than optimal playing conditions for a season or two, not when the excellent (from their perspective) alternative of AT&T is available.

    • brian.only Mar 7,2014 10:26 pm || Up

      Last place I’d want to see the A’s play… I don’t like AT&T, seats are weirdly positioned, hate the nosebleed angles, not being able to get up during an inning- yet everyone standing up for no reason… Granted I love the view, but it kinda sucks for actual ‘baseball’, muuuuuuch prefer the Coliseum viewing layout.

      • Englishmajor Mar 7,2014 10:45 pm || Up

        I totally agree. But teams and players would probably like it better than some janky temporary place that’s an unknown quantity.

        • Jennifer Mar 8,2014 12:29 am || Up

      Yeah, I agree, that idea seems really unlikely. Hard to take it as more than a negotiations jab at the JPA.

      "Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
      • FreeSeatUpgrade Mar 7,2014 11:24 pm || Up

        Hmm, it occurs to me that this idea really only makes sense after a new stadium deal is made. No way on earth MLB or players allow a temporary place unless the next stop is already set in stone. Which would only happen if the old place were unavailable. Like, demolished to make way for said new stadium. Hmmm…

        "Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
        • colin Mar 8,2014 7:40 am || Up

          I agree. The one situation where you would need a two-year temporary spot is if they tear down the coliseum to put up a new stadium in the same footprint.

        • dmoas Mar 8,2014 7:52 am || Up

          Or if Oakland goes all in with the Raiders and gives them the Coli spot to tear down leaving the A’s homeless. Personally, I see them in the Coli through 2020 though with no new stadium until at least 2025.

          • FreeSeatUpgrade Mar 8,2014 8:18 am || Up

            But in that scenario, absent a done deal for San Jose, the A’s would be moving to a temporary place without an immediate exit strategy. There is no fucking way MLB or the union lets that happen.

            This risk of being a team without a home has really gotten MLB pissed off at the A’s. We’re seeing this manifested in Lew’s recent approaches to the JPA, for a 10 year extension, and maybe even for something more permanent. I’m pretty sure the league has told Lew to stop fucking around with this risk of statelessness. (This also fits with my belief that MLB thinks the land and financing in a San Jose deal is shaky, T-rights aside).

              I think you’re reading way too much into a few things. Yes in that scenario they’d have no permanent home. But guess what, that’s possible. If the JPA goes all in with the Raiders (which I think they should) that leaves the A’s with no home. That’s a very real scenario (although I don’t see it happening). Just because MLB, the A’s, and the union don’t like that possibility, it’s a very real one. And I don’t see what they could do to avoid it if the JPA plays hard ball or walks away. And let’s be honest, this is a situation all in MLB’s (not the A’s) creation. They could have stepped up over 5+ years ago and acted. They didn’t. (And by act, I don’t mean just sign off on SJ, but had been decisive. I.E. “Make a deal with Oakland or else” was just as much an option at the time). I don’t see anything suggesting MLB is pissed off with the A’s. I don’t see any reason to think MLB gives a shit about the A’s. Personally, I think it’s less likely that MLB thinks the SJ deal is shaky so much as they don’t want ANY team to pay for their own stadium privately. They don’t want the A’s following the Giants’ formula. They want SJ to pony up. If SJ offered $100+ million as a “token” this would be over.

                In what world is going all in on football stadiums a good idea. Can you point to one that has ever been a good idea?

                Baseball actually has benefits to the area that football doesn’t. Which is the stupidest part about oakland bending over backwards for the raiders to the detriment of the A’s

                  I don’t believe football is a good idea. I believe working with the only team that’s shown a willingness to work with you to be a good idea. IF you assume you should try to keep at least one sports team in town, that would be the one to focus on. Not because it makes economic sense (it doesn’t), but because it’s simply the only one willing to partner with you.

                Wow, all I can say is that you most definitely do not read the evidence the same way I do. Which is the nicest possible way I can say that you’re wrong and I’m right.

                  Don’t worry. It’s okay for you to be wrong every now and then, even if you do think you’re right. Your bias is getting in the way and driving you down paths that don’t exist. And let’s face it, you have a very significant bias in all this.
