Hey there, hi there, ho there…this is your old Uncle Bed telling you to just say no to Uggs…those things don’t look good on anyone.
The last lounge was so old that vultures were starting to circle it so I thought I’d throw a new one up for all you fine folks.
So pull up a chair and think of a number between 1 and 1,347,862…and your number is…the Jack of Clubs.
Lounge em’ if you got em’
It’s muggy/foggy
What up, B?
My blood pressure…I guess I need to stop freebasing salt.
***BREAKING NEWS***
The First Amendment says nothing about a person’s right to have a realty show about ducks on A&E.
My posts in this lounge make more sense if you read them in the voice of Rob Reiner.
So, have you been naughty or nice this year? A rather rotund man in a red suit has all the dirt so be honest.
Dear NSA,
If you’re reading this I can totally explain my Edward Snowden/Bridget the Midget fanfic site.
We’re under a ice storm warning so if I stop posting suddenly I’m likely dead.
Or at a key party.
Oh…an Ang Lee film related post. I’m in if I get a shot at Kevin Kline.
I missed you.
How did your eye surgery go?
Okay. Just had my one week follow up. Doc says I could still use glasses. We’ll see what my one month and three month appointments say before I do another surgery.
I don’t know much about that type of surgery…I guess I was under the impression that once was enough to get the desired result. I hope it all works out for you.
So tonight’s lounge goes something like this…
Whoever writes the best post wins a Cadillac El Dorado, second place gets a set of steak knives, third place…you’re fired.
A Always B Be K Krauting.
What’s your favorite movie of 2013?
Gravity was my favorite movie this year. It was such a unique experience.
I don’t know if it’s from 2013, but I saw it in 2013: The Intouchables
Is that the French movie?
Exactly!
I’ve heard good things but I haven’t seen it yet…I’ll try to get to it when I can.
I have yet to talk to someone who saw it and didn’t really like it.
Well, I’ll definitely make sure to watch it then.
Yay, it’s on Netflix! I might just try to watch this tonight.
See what you think! It sort of kept hovering in my queue because I was never “in the mood for subtitles.” But one night I decided to give it a try and was so pleased that I did. It’s funny and heartwarming and interesting.
Watching a movie with subtitles is such a drag. I can’t even play with my phone while I’m watching!
Foreign Movies: The RuPaul of films
Watched it. Lived it.
d*loved it. Stupid phone.
I’m so glad! Good thing you corrected that–I was confused/intrigued.
1. Thor 2
2. Iron Man 3
3. The Heat
4. World War Z
5. Kick-Ass 2
I should mention those were almost the entire list of movies I actually saw in 2013. Of the 6 movies I saw this year, 3 I saw when I was in SF.
I saw one of those. Iron Man 3 I liked it more than part two but not as much as the first film.
Apocalypse Now.
Ah…so how’s 1979 treating you?
Upstream Color. Nothing else I’ve seen this year comes close. It positively hums with this beautiful emotionally vivid energy. No other way to describe it, and believe me, I couldn’t if I tried.
Also really good: 12 Years a Slave, Gravity, Before Midnight, Wadjda. Haven’t seen most of the big December movies yet.
There are a lot of interesting looking movies coming out this month. I’ll probably have to wait until they hit On Demand but I’m looking forward to seeing them. I’ve never heard of Upstream Color but I’ll look it up.
If you ever saw or heard of Primer, that time-travel movie eight or nine years back, Upstream Color is done by the same guy. I thought Primer was fine, but it left me a little cold. The whole conceit of the movie was the plot twisting in PhD-level knots because of the time travel, which is fine, but unraveling it is basically all there is to enjoy in it.
This one has a completely different feel. Sure, there’s also a bizarre plot device that makes perfect sense in the writer’s head and probably no one else, but there’s so much else to love about it.
Definitely looking forward to Her as well. Not going to come out for a while here, unfortunately.
I saw Primer…I liked it at the time but I haven’t seen it again so I don’t know if it holds up.
I want to see Her, The Wolf of Wall Street, American Hustle, Lone Survivor and Anchorman 2…which I’m seeing tonight.
I’ll also add Nebraska (hopefully tomorrow) and Inside Llewyn Davis to that list.
I’ll see those when they come out on DVD…they aren’t the kind of movies I’d go to the theater to see.
Last night I watched “Inside: Inside Llewyn Davis” on Showtime, a documentary about the making of the music used in the film, and it was awesome.
What’s your least favorite movie of 2013?
Verlander 2: The Near No-Hitter
Agreed. I fucking knew it was coming too.
The Hangover III was my least favorite movie of the year…it was almost aggressively unfunny.
I liked the first one, I don’t remember much about the second one but I hated this one.
What’s your favorite book of 2013?
This Town by Mark Leibovich was my favorite book of 2013…it’s a look at current Washington DC culture. It made me laugh, it made me angry, but most of all it made me keep turning the pages of the book.
Your Arkansas Baby Update…
Apparently the baby is mine because he seems to hate cold weather almost as much as I do as he refuses to come out. Miss Hawaii is doing fine but she’s ready to get the show on the road and to never allow me to get her pregnant again.
Someone’s getting a vasectomy for Christmas.
Tis the season to snip, snip.
11 lbs., 4 ounces and starting left guard for the 2036 Raiders.
I’m sure Reggie McKenzie will have the Raiders turned around by then.
Is he prairie dogging it yet?
Sorry, but your technical medical lingo goes over my head.
What’s your favorite TV show of 2013?
Easy peasy for me…Breaking Bad. The last few episodes were some of the best television I’ve ever seen.
Vikings
The Americans or Orange is the New Black
I want to catch up on both of those.
Also, Veep. I think you would really like that one.
I’ll look it up.
Yup, Breaking Bad. But Enlightened was so, so good. A close second.
My Top 5 TV Shows of 2013
1. Breaking Bad
2. Justified
3. Mad Men
4. Person of Interest
5. Parts Unknown with Anthony Bourdain
Was Mad Men even on during 2013? Feels like it’s been between seasons for like 18 months.
The season finale was in June.
Breaking Bad
Orange Is the New Black
Game of Thrones
Justified
Mad Men
Walking Dead
Your favorite album of 2013?
Arctic Monkeys – AM
Only because I only stole 2 albums this year.
Wait. I forgot Haim.
I think we’ve all forgotten Corey Haim.
Deafheaven – Sunbather. They managed to fuse together equal parts black metal and My Bloody Valentine-esque shoegaze, and make it sound perfectly in-sync and natural. It’s a monster.
Marnie Stern – The Chronicles of Marnia
Iceage – You’re Nothing
Veronica Falls – Waiting for Something to Happen
No Age – An Object
Daft Punk – Random Access Memories
I think that’s probably my top 5. It was a slow year for record/cd purchases.
Your favorite sports moment of 2013?
Getting to go back to Oakland… sitting in the front row… being on the field again. Meeting some pretty awesome FKers.
Being with my son at Game 2 of the ALDS.
Sweet answer.
if I say sons will it be sweeter?
No, that would be too sweet Ed…you can only take one.
Your favorite Bed lounge post of 2013?
That’s like trying to pick my favorite star.
I feel like I did some of my best posts this year when I was in Hawaii.
Teehee.
Fine…I have a John Quincy Adams poster up in my garage…Don’t you dare judge my love of bald Presidents whose dad was one of the Founding Fathers.
Dinner: ham steaks, asparagus, hominy. I tried wrapping some of the asparagus in prosciutto. There was a lot of salt in the meal but it was good.
A dinner both hammy and hominy.
We like all the weird veggies.
I don’t eat weird veggies…I’m a Republican.
ham’s definitely one of the weirder ones.
Ham, the other white vegetable!
He’s my favorite honky.
King Tut is going to file a grievance.
It’s cool…me and the Tut go way back. He’s my favorite honky and I’m his favorite donkey.
Oh for paradise the Southland is my nominee
Just give me a ham hock and a grit of hominy
We’re a stereotype.
I want to pop my stereotype.
Try with hominy.
Ahi Tuna (blackened with fried peppercorns)
Riced cauliflower
Sweet Potatoes
Pinot
don’t leave us hangin like that… blanc, noir, or grigio?
Noir! Naturally.
Happy birthday everybody.
thanks. but its not till march

I’m very excited to announce a film Oz and I made this summer will be coming out in March. It’s called Brokebed Mountain It’s about Oz as he goes on a journey of self discovery with a dead sexy trail guide during the 1970’s in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas.
So that’s the real story behind the name of the band Ozark Mountain Daredevils. It fits.

I was at a bar today with a bunch of 2nd grade parents. Kids were there too (it was a restaurant). i mentioned my elbow hurt. One of the moms then asked me if I was right handed.
Totally rude.
Dude. Your elbow STILL hurts?
only since 1986
Is this the same elbow we talked about while stuck in traffic by the Apple sign? I think there was a jail nearby. :-)
it is. It bothers me periodically. Enough to mention to people, but not enough to make a doctors appointment.

Thanks, and go As.
Sexy shoes? Meow!
Hi!
Duh.
Hi.
Thanks, and go As.
I need to go beer tasting with you. I want to like beer but can’t find anything that doesn’t taste bitter.
all the beers I like taste bitter.
Thanks, and go As.
Boulevard is a regional brewer along the lines of Anchor Brewing in the Bay Area, but aside from them there’s noticeably little microbrewing activity in the middle of the country. I’m afraid the Midwestern beer palate is still controlled by the death grip of the King of Beers.
Boulevard has amazing Pale Ale and Wheat brats.
I don’t know about KC, but there are a number of good microbreweries in the upper midwest – I’ve had beer from Three Floyds (IN), Two Brothers (IL), Goose Island (IL), Bell’s (MI), Founders (MI) Summit (MN). And of course Colorado isn’t that far away either.
Yeah, upper midwest is awesome. Add Great Lakes Brewing Co (OH) and Surly (MN) to your list.
Bell’s is up there with Allagash as one of my absolute favorite shops.
Were you around for those bleak few years when Bell’s got in a dispute with Miller or something and couldn’t get distribution in Chicago?
Nope. That would have been awful.
Somehow I survived, but I don’t like to talk about it.
All you people talk about is booze…it’s almost as bad as my AA meetings.
I bet your ass looked hawt.
Eh.
Thanks, and go As.
Where are the posts about Justine Bateman?
Favorite beer of 2013?
I’ll go Mug. A&W is too sweet, Dr. Brown’s is too hard to find and Barq’s is a little too bitter.
The last few times I’ve been here I haven’t seen Oz around. A lounge without him is like eating a hot dog without mustard, you can still choke it down, but it’s not nearly as good.
He’s in Dubai.
Hmm…you could have given me a 1,000 guesses and I wouldn’t have come up with Dubai as to where he was…I hear it’s a dry heat.
We watched Red 2 this morning…I have no memory of the first movie, so some of the plot was lost on me, but a lot of stuff blew up.
My bottom 5 Movies of 2013
1. The Hangover III
2. A Good Day to Die Hard
3. Man of Steel
4. (Insert most recent Ryan Reynolds movie here)
5. Star Trek Into Blowing Shit Up
It’s hard to do a list of least favorite TV shows because I don’t tend to hate watch stuff. I will say I gave up on both The Newsroom (I hate every character on that show) and Dexter (Should have ended about 5 years ago) Even though I watched Dexter for years after the first 5 episodes of the last season I just didn’t give a damn anymore how it ended.
I stayed with Dexter one season too long (the John Lithgow one), and now wish I could unsee it and be done.
I’m not cool enough to eat Wonder Bread.

Very excited to announce I’ve bought the Jacksonville Jaguars for $37.67 and a book of Wendy’s coupons. My plan is Matt Millen at GM and Mike Singletary as the head coach. I smell greatness.

Losing my load is what got me into this trouble.
If you take the fourth word from every fourth post I’ve made in the last four months and put them together…all will be revealed.
I’m really looking forward to the part of today’s Raider game where we’re in the middle of a drive and we switch quarterbacks on 2nd down for no apparent reason.
DirecTV gave me Sunday Ticket for free this year when I kept my account when I moved. I’ve rarely watched a game on those channels, but since Raiders-Chargers is the only game on the regular Reno stations this afternoon, I’m glad I’m not limited to that clunker.
Most of the rest of the country gets New England-Baltimore in that slot. That game might be slightly more interesting.
Me too. I like watching the red zone channel, but can only do so either after watching the Niners game or before kickoff. If the Niners play the morning game, and I DVR/don’t watch, it kills the benefit.
Where are the posts about Packard Bell computers?
I can’t wait to get into the mosh pit at the Sarah McLachlan concert tonight.

*non christian/R&B/HIPHOP division
Have there been any rock songs in the last 10 years?
i see your point
Good walkup music:
Nice!
indeed
Fuck, that album is more than 10 years old already. I guess FSU is right.
And they’ve been around for 13-15 yrs probably…
The first show I booked at a warehouse in North Oakland was Orchid and Red Scare.
Orchid was super nice, shared the dinner they had cooked, and wondered if a new that had been recently touring with them could maybe play the show too.
They said there was no set (up) time and all they needed was an outlet somewhere and no soundcheck.
I was a bit worried because the show was already running late, but gave them a go because they said their set was only 10 minutes and they’ll start at the last beat of Orchids set.
By then i was pretty curious and became even more psyched when I saw the rag-tag collections of amps they were dragging in.
The band was named Lightning Bolt, which I remember thinking was kinda corny.
They were both junky/ stick fucking thin, really quirky, and reeked of tiger-balm, but they smiled and gave me their record, and their names were both Brian which made it pretty easy to remember, felt like the right choice!
By the end of Orchids set I could see the drummer slowly develop this big shit-eating grin, he kept raising his sticks higher and higher.
Instantaneously at the last beat I felt the air pressure from the first blast, a 300- 400W bass chord from the amp tower behind me, which had somehow oddly grown 6 ft since the last time I had looked!
The entire crowd of 75-100 people turned around as one, eerie and robotic.
Everyone had this glazed yet elated look about them, like they just crapped their pants, but they were in too good a mood to care.
They absolutely destroyed it, utter annihilation.
I’ll always remember that night quite fondly.
Ugh, sorry for the english abuse, proofread brian, proofread…
there was a band from austin in the late 90s that tried really hard not to be know as the band with fire. they would put fire pots on the stage with them and light them off during the show.
It was totally dangerous and they likely put my life in more danger that I thought, but damn it was cool.
There was band like that called Crash Worship that may have lived in Austin for a bit, some of the dudes still live in Oakland and do a marching band now.
They actually did burn a place down in Chicago in 95′ I think.
saw them twice. once we drove to phoenix on NYE to this rave in an, iirc, old ice warehouse. this part is only significant because at some moment i was clawing at the walls and they were crumbling under my touch and it was like this symbol of moral decay everywhere and also how the walls would probably be unable to hold the roof up so it’d probably crush us if we weren’t careful but mostly decay, moral yet physically manifest somehow… and then someone said, dude, the walls are covered in cork and this acid is amazing.
but anyway, yeah, fire. loud electronic percussions. more fire. tempera paint. boobies and bedanglers. more fire. loud electronic percussions. tribal future primitive shit.
when the set was over we were stranded in that room surrounded by art pieces of life size torture devices because the music in the rave just sounded like cars going by real fast at a race course and that seemed scary somehow.
—
didn’t know they were in oakland.
hmmm, this was more of a band.
Lemme think for a while
CW was a band. lots of members. 3 drummers and guitar, keyboard, singer, maybe one of those gigantic swiss alp horns but electronic?
Kiss Offs
here
no video! yay
trouser press like them. that’s something.
Not really, but i was at a couple shows where they had a drum machine, an 808, was very booty.
Short answer, Yep, you were there.
The new incarnation is Extra Action Marching Band.
Whoa. Back in the old days at AN there was a guy whose username was eamb, which represented the Extra Action Marching Band. He was a cool guy, one of the sort of interesting/oddball cool people that made AN awesome back in that era. But what I remember most about him was that one day he announced he’d be leaving the site soon, because he was sentenced to a stretch (18 mo?) in federal prison for drug distribution (ecstasy?). Never heard back from him, hope he came out of it OK.
I think about that every once in a while. I do wonder. that was a good 5 years ago, yeah?
6-7 years ago, at least.
Oh right, I knew I recognized the name from somewhere.
Exactly 7 years.
He returned briefly in 2008
Some things don’t change. There was this great discussion between LowcountryJoe, Cutthemullet, and alox, then N*** had to butt in with something stupid.
And FSU commented on his return!
oh. that makes sense.
oh shit. just remembered where i saw them the second time. tipitina’s (!!!) on halloween (!!!) in 1993 (???). they led a procession out of the building and played for about half an hour on the street. i only partly remember — half blind because someone had opened up their rave necklace and all the fluorescent goo had gone into my eyes, and the other half blind drunk anyway, so… yeah!
only thought of it now because tomorrow we’re…
oh, and they were from san diego. i think they had some weird compound in the desert.
Escondido to be exact.
cool.
I really really miss that place, just checked the interwebs for videos and found this insane show to give a flavor of the feeling those days.
We were done in by a condo that sprouted behind us sadly, noise complaints…
Had a great 8 yr/ show a week run though and made several lasting friendships!
awesome.
I love treasures like that video. I like that there is very little photographic or video evidence of that persiod. it makes it super cool when a picture of video crops up
I was super, no, ridiculously happy to find it.
There was this dude Lars that took rock photos luckily, aside from flyers and minidisc recordings, that’s all I have aside from memory.
If Nobody in particular ever finds the minidisc player I lent him, I could listen to em’!
I was too broke and distracted to really get a good document.
It was a fierce amount of work to keep that place afloat, we only took $25 from the door a show, and the ‘roommate attrition’ rate was quite high.
That whole post is hella taglineish, but especially
In my time here at FK I have yet to figure out what is and isn’t tagline worthy. It’s like algebra…it may just be over my head.
That’s why I stay out of it.
at new parish they kept blowing out the house fuse. couldn’t string two songs together without a blackout.
Hard to imagine the Chiefs beating anyone at all in the playoffs.
2-4 since this comment.
All part of the Alex Smith experience. Him plus a good defense means you’ll strangle a lot of the teams in the league. But the teams that are better than you are going to win 95% of the time since his performance doesn’t really have a lot of upward variance.
Also, suck it, Miami.
Another fraud of a team. I’m coming to the conclusion that there are actually no teams capable of winning the Super Bowl this year, and the title will be vacated.
Denver. Sorry.
Never heard of them. There is no such city. You made that up.
I’d love to think you’re right, but our defense is terrible. Though when Manning can put up 35 without breaking a sweat we may be able to overcome it.
There are some ridiculous defenses in the NFC though.
Thanks, and go As.
I think the Seahawks end up winning it b/c home-field gets them there and they’re just better than AFC teams (though their loss yesterday gives us a dreamer’s chance of the #1 seed, which would change everything).
I really hope it shakes down that Carolina goes to Seattle in the playoffs. Pretty sure the Panthers can beat them.
Thanks, and go As.
aaaaaand now Von Miller has torn his ACL. crap.
That’s so Raiders.
What 2014 Raiders games have lacked in skilled professional football play, they’ve made up for in excruciating tedium.
I’m thankful there’s only one more game. The second half of the season has been tough to watch.
It probably didn’t effect the outcome but today’s Raiders game was very poorly officiated.
Really bad. Very much from the old “when in doubt, screw the Raiders” school of officiating. But probably the Raiders lose today even if it’s called fairly.
It did bring back memories of CONSPIRACY THEORIES but yeah, we would have lost probably no matter what.
As far as these Gruden back to the Raiders rumors I’m willing to give my soon to be here (we hope) son the name Jon or Gruden or Jon Gruden somewhere in his name if that will help bring Chuckie back to Oakland.
Dennis Allen is surely gone, but Gruden has a nice gig right now and while I can see him getting back into coaching in a good situation, a team with no QB and a year-to-year stadium lease? Why step in that steaming pile? That’s a job for (yet another) young prospect or a Joe Bugel-type journeyman.
They’ll have a high draft pick, more cap space than any team in the NFL and Gruden would get huge money and total control of the team. I doubt it’ll happen but you never know. The not having a QB thing is an issue but the stadium lease isn’t going to matter at all to an incoming coach. It’s not like the team is going to be disbanded. They’ll either stay in Oakland or move back to LA.
How can they not have a QB? Weren’t you all SUPER EXCITED when they traded for Carson Palmer?
I’m still glad Palmer is gone. With him, maybe the Raiders go 6-10 this year instead of 4-12. My problem with the Raiders is that they thought Matt Flynn would be good, so they planned around him.
Carson Palmer throws 4 picks and the Cardinals still beat the Seahawks in Seattle…If you told me that was going to happen today I wouldn’t have believed you.
I think the only woman I ever truly understood was Ms. Pacman.
Milk was a bad choice.
Unless you just won the Indy 500.
…and here comes Bed on the outside in his Ford Escape.
Okay, close your eyes…now imagine Judge Wapner in an orange speedo and nothing but an orange speedo.
i keep trying these. but i can never finish reading the instructions with my eyes closed.
gak. its so simple.
1) close your eyes.
Are they closed, good, now
2) imagine judge wapner in an orange speedo
It was 1977 and I was staying at Dyan Cannon’s pad in Laurel Canyon. Glenn Frey had brought some really good coke he got from David Geffen’s boyfriend. I was out back looking into the light blue water of the pool thinking I didn’t miss my lost innocence all that much. Eric Clapton was cutting lines on a picnic table while Charo told a story about a donkey who knew too much. I walked over to the table and took a deep breath and the the air seemed filled with chance and wonder.
Heh ding!
is that the night you gave Blondie a thumb hickey?
It’s hard to remember…all I know is I woke up the next morning in a Mexican jail with a tattoo of Cher on my back.
Sounds like quite the road trip babe’.
Only a Brian could have made it through.
I here to tell you that the surfing scene in Arkansas isn’t nearly as good as you’ve heard.
He who dealt it smelt it is as good a code to live by as any other.
Say what you want about the tenets of National Fartism, at least it’s an ethos.
too general. needs to be, he who sniffs twice at it and secretly enjoys it dealt it.
Not many people got a code to live by anymore.
i will not break into a car
I will not break dance.
Anytime I walk into a place and see only hard metal chairs I think to myself…I’m too old for this sit.
This is my favorite one of these in quite awhile.
I’m glad you liked it.
It hurts to move.
:(
Heating pad, thorazine?
Percocet, heating pad
yes please.
There ya go, I’m a poor practitioner, can’t swallow pills for the life of me…
You don’t swallow? Sounds like my ex.
I’m icing down my right shoulder. I feel old.
Just let him do all the work.
That an offer?
So for Christmas dinner…
A. Ham
B. Turkey
C. Steaks
D. Other
I’m cooking steaks for the extended family. But if I had my choice it’d be ham.
Because I can’t reply to Bed:
We’re having chili this year.
Well, most people just won’t reply to me…not that I blame them,
Our Christmas is going to be pretty small this year. I think it’s mostly going to involve my wife laying in bed telling me she wishes she was a lesbian. We need to get this kid out soon.
You’re going to need ibuprofen and a coat hanger.
Turkey baster.
Oh Jennifer…you’re amazing.
Awww, thanks. I usually only hear that when I’m naked.

Thanks, and go As.

Rib roast.
I’ve always said Rib deserves to be teased by Andrew “Dice” Clay.
yup. yorkshire pudding too?
Oh yeah.
RTFT. And, as always, Andy is a man who has it all figured out.
All credit for this one goes to my better half.
it’ll be our first try.
be advised. magnani’s does not have prime rib, they have standing rib. plenty of it though.
We are doing Local Butcher this year.
The whole “prime” thing is a little confusing, because normally it refers to a grading (Prime/Choice/Select), but prime rib is a name for a cut, and my understanding is that most prime rib (even at fancy places) is not actually Prime grade.
Love local butcher. great people
I thought that “standing rib roast” was the butcher’s term for the cut that ends up being “prime rib” on menus.
*magnani’s does not have the standing rib roast that is graded prime.
*i can’t even figure out if it’s pronounced knee-man or nigh-man.
Tofurky and canned cranberries. I pretty much want to spend a grand total of 2 1/2 minutes in the kitchen, 1 hours outside with my dogs, and the rest with my ass glued to my sofa.
Beef roast!
We’re doing a crown roast of pork.
Tamales. Gotta have something to unwrap.
Splurged on a cut of dry-aged ribeye. Olive oil/balsamic roasted brussels sprouts. Pilaf.
That’ll work.
Yup. The local grocery store dry-ages their own meat, and I’ve been eyeing it for quite a while. Christmas is a special enough occasion, I think.
I agree…no matter your beliefs Christmas is a good day to eat well.
Eve Dinner
Fucking ham
Day Dinner (which we planned)
Sweedish Raclete with gerkins, pickled beets, pickled cauliflower, speck, proscuitto, shizo peppers, and bell peppers
Standing rib roast
E. A new place to live.
:O
Thanks, and go As.
Where?
Still Livermore, but it’s an actual DFA-disapproved single family suburbia home with a garage, a driveway, a big back yard, and side yard/RV parking access sort of thing.
Oh and it’s literally one block away from the older’s middle school he starts next year, and 2 blocks from the high school. I can stay in this place for years.
Thanks, and go As.
Sounds awesome Mike, long time coming, and you deserve it.
congrats
Happy Xmas!
That is awesome. A true Christmas miracle when anyone finds a place to live that they like and can afford these days.
Excellent excellent news, congrats.
Well done, Mike #5!
Great to hear it! Congrats!
woot
nice!
What can Jackson Browne do for you?
I wish he would stay just a little bit longer
Excellent response.
thank you. I love him!
I like Jackson Browne…I liked that whole laid back 70’s California thing.
Heading out, night y’all!
If you end up in a Mexican jail, give me a call, I know a guy.
You think when Bruce Willis hosts a Christmas party that every time he answers the door he says…”welcome to the party, pal.”
I sure hope so.
Hey, that’s Governor Moonbeam to you, mister.
How about President Moonbeam?
Been there done that, been there done that, and been there done that.
The thing about Jerry is that his thirst for power is literally unquenchable. I really believe that it’s a need for external validation, born from something in his childhood, that he can only satisfy through elections.
I’ve often found him interesting. I don’t really pay attention to California politics anymore so I couldn’t say if he was doing a good job this time around as your governor.
tough call. He as handed shit, but he had the luxury of an improving economy, then a controlled assembly and senate. even with out that control, he made some shrewd (some bad) moves that ultimately helped.
I think he has done alright
I agree with this. I give him good marks for effective governance. I just think he doesn’t actually believe in anything anymore.
Politicians who actually believe in stuff scare me…I like pragmatists who just want to get stuff done.
I don’t like glassy-eyed True Believers, to be sure. But come election day I do want my politicians to have some kind of moral rudder I can count on as a guide to what their future positions might be. That actually means more to me than what they say their positions at the moment are. And that’s what I think Jerry has lost.
I tend to vote for the person I think has the best judgement and temperament for the job they’re seeking. I like folks who want to get things done, don’t care where a good idea came from, and don’t think compromise is a dirty word.
this
I think this is mostly true. He’s waaaaaaaaay worse than even Arnold on prison issues, though, and those are a pretty huge deal in our backwards-ass state.
Realignment is good though.
undeniably.
But there are drawbacks for the poors. Probation deals are less likely to be offered. DAs say things like “its not real prison, its just jail” which is true enough as in jail>prison, and jailers have more money for services.
But everytime you are sent to prison you are then eligible for a one year consecutive time enhancement for future felonies. People are accepting prison offers now for an extra year later.
can you flush this out? I don’t really get the second part
I’m not sure I agree on the whole package. Flash could really be used to eff people, and a lot of counties are wildly unprepared to do that work.
That said, judges make better hearing officers than parolees used to get.
We laughed, we cried, we bonded over our shared love of fine wine and whoopie cushions and when we looked deeply into each other’s eyes we knew that Yan could indeed both cook and love.
Where are the posts about the Portland Trailblazers?
Assuming FB status updates from Portland friends are representative of overall Portland (not a good assumption, but, whatever), there are about 3 people who give a shit about the team: my wife’s cousin, her son, and Paul Allen.
Bridget the Midget called today. She’s left Rob Ford, she says after a few hits off the crack pipe he just lays around and talks about hockey and jelly donuts. She wants a real man so she’s set her sights on Chris Christie. I guess she partied with him back in 2002 and she says he can go all night long if there’s Cheetos and Hawaiian Punch there to keep him fueled up. I think she’ll make a great First Lady come January 2017.
I think there is a <10% chance Christie survives the primaries. I'm afraid of him if he can do that without going full-nut though
Yeah, I don’t know who the GOP will end up with as their nominee. They often go with the guy whose turn it is but there isn’t really anyone like that this time. There’s no Dole, McCain or Romney in this group unless Ryan lays claim to it by being the VP choice last time around. It should be an interesting election.
I would think Ryan would be the front runner. I might put money on rand paul if you gave me good odds. Christie will never make it through the primary like nm says. Cruz is too crazy. A case can be made for Huckaby I suppose.
Even setting aside the problem of there being no one whose “turn” it is, the current GOP electorate is now both more conservative (in the left-right sense) and less conservative (in the taking risks sense) than it used to be. Judging by the run of results in Senate primaries over Obama’s presidency, there is more possibility than ever of them nominating a real whackadoodle candidate this time, like a Rand Paul or a Ted Cruz (possibly not eligible because Canadian, I guess).
I think Ryan is probably the front-runner due to being just whackadoodle enough, but then again he has been on the side of the House leadership and did just cut a deal with the Democrats, so he may be too much of an accomodationist now. Maybe the Wisconsin governor takes his spot.
you write whackadoodle one more time and this post will be better understood if read in the voice of edie mcclurg.
I’d be disappointed if they nominated Rand Paul. You’re right—this is the best shot at Full Whackadoodle we’ve had in quite some time. The likes of Rand Paul or Paul Ryan wouldn’t be any more whackadoodle than most of the field we’ve had recently.
My guess is that it’ll be a big GOP field. If Hilary runs for the Dems that will likely be a small field on that side which is too bad…the more the merrier in my opinion.
I think Biden is probably running either way, unless Hillary locks up every donor. Andrew Cuomo too.
I think Martin O’Malley might run. I’ll support Biden if he runs…he’s always been a favorite of mine. I just wish he was ten years younger.
his hair is 10 years younger than you
At least…I love how it only covers the front of his dome. He has a bald spot the size of Texas.
Don’t forget Elizabeth Warren. I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if Julian Castro and/or Kirsten Gillibrand give it a shot. If not in 2016, then 2020.
I’d love to see Warren run, but my guess is she won’t. I can’t see Gillibrand going for it against Hillary either.
Oooh, didn’t realize that. Yeah, I can’t see Gillibrand squaring off against Hillary. She’s young enough. 2020, then.
Also, I’m pretty sure Santorum is gearing up for another go. Sure see enough bumper stickers out here.
Santorum. Good god what a loser.
What are the primary ruls gonna be? winner take all?
Still not settled.
2024
Romney was such a weak candidate that a loon like Santorum was actually able to make some hay. If Hilary does run I doubt anyone with NY ties will go against her.
I wish Al Gore would run…that would be fun to see his square off against the Clintons. I seriously doubt he will though…too busy making money and hanging out with a younger girlfriend.
Aw, that’s kind of harsh.
I give Gore credit…I think he’s really enjoying life. I think that’s great.
no hillary, big field. fun field. hillary? small field
Biden as the nominal favorite would be a blast.
Warren will not run
I actually think Christie has a good chance of being the GOP nominee, because logic tells me that the big money people will get tired of losing elections due to the influence of primary season idealogues.
Depends if they can get the primaries fixed by then – though with their record of gerrymandering and suppressing “undesirable” votes I wouldn’t put it past them.
oh, you are using the number 3 definition of fixed
I’m not cool enough to watch the LPGA.
I would join Twitter but surely all my anti-Dutch tweets would get me fired within days.
Could be…
Listen, I’m not saying that all guys who drive vans are serial killers but chances are those who do want to skin you alive and eat your liver.
Okay, we got this thing over 300 comments…without Oz and Kay that’s harder to do but thankfully we did it…I only see value in my life in terms of how many posts are made in the lounge so this shit is important.
That’ll do, Free Kraut. That’ll do.
KQED forum on beer right now.
My favorite antidote to bad Christmas music each year. Have a great holiday!
Enjoy the good days, endure the bad days, and remember to laugh when you can.
This is either going to be a quiet, lazy week or a week I’ll remember for the rest of my life.
you have a 2nd kid yet?
Nope…we’re hoping he comes this week.
Hey, it’s snowing…that’s great…and by great I mean awful beyond belief.
Did I just hear Miss Hawaii shout…what was that?
She still kind of likes it but I was the same way my first couple of years up in Kansas. It’s still something new and different for her.
I was thinking she would say “IT’S TIME!!” at the peak of the ice storm. Actually I’ll take 12/25 at 12:25 p.m. in the pool.
Most of my ~30 adult years living in the Bay Area, I didn’t see any way I would ever live where it snows. The Tahoe move wasn’t an idea until about 6 months before it actually happened.
Once in a snowy environment the key is a little bit of experience and a lot of preparation, “preparation” meaning having the right equipment both at the individual level (quality clothing, shovels, snowblower) and the government level (equipment and personnel to clear roads in a reasonable amount of time). In places where it snows infrequently, preparation will fall short every time, because you go through a couple winters without ever using the equipment and everybody thinks they should save money by getting rid of the equipment. Even a place like the City of Reno has had this issue with plowing capacity.
She thinks the kid won’t be out until this weekend at the earliest. My guess is this Friday. The weather is thankfully going to get better after tonight.
One thing is for sure after going through this process twice…I”M VERY HAPPY TO BE A MAN!
I am nowhere near tough enough to give birth.
I’m still amazed at the preparation out here at the government level. I get that it’s an absolute necessity, but wow, the speed and efficiency at which the plows clear the roads are impressive, to say the least.
The football coach who coaches football players, Dennis Allen has made the switch I’ve been waiting for…Pryor will start against the Broncos. I have no idea if Pryor is a long term answer but he intrigues me, and I see the possibility of an upside. Matt McGloin is a scrub who will be selling cars in a couple of years.
Matt McGloin is who he is. A guy who probably would make a very capable backup that you wouldn’t be horrified to see make a spot start or two in case of an injury.
But that’s about it. Pryor still has a chance to be something more, but man, that shot sure seems to be dwindling fast.
I agree. I’d like to see Pryor get a chance behind the improved line play. I say it’s 1 out of 5 that Pryor is special but that’s enough for me to want to see him play.
Listening to Raiders fans talk is sort of like listening to A’s fans talk circa 2008. He’s probably a bust, but let’s see what we have in Dan Meyer before we release him!
Fair enough…I will say this about Pryor, my favorite moments this season have been with him on the field.
It’s the wound that never heals. At this point, I alternate between acceptance and the bargaining stage of grief.
I like McGloin and think he has a future in the league. The Pryor start is 100% about showcasing him for an offseason trade.
There’s already enough film on Pryor for any sort of trade, one that won’t net much if anything at all, I think you’re dead wrong about McGloin but that’s par for the course for us…we’re football opposites.
1. Pryor’s not going to command a huge haul, sure…NFL trades never do…but NFL teams are high on versatile athletic option QBs right now, someone might bite. A good performance against Denver’s second team can only help. Anyway, I’d bet that Pryor won’t be on the Raiders roster next opening day.
2. It’s true, pretty sure we’ve never agreed on anything in football except which team we both root for.
I always enjoy talking football with you…you know your stuff. If Allen is gone my guess is both QB’s won’t be on the roster. Of the two though I agree that Pryor is most likely to be traded.
I’m sorry, but if Allen is gone it’s just another shortsighted move by the franchise.
Allen’s had to go through the worst part of a rebuild, and now that there is going to be cap room and the ability to actually build a team, people are clamoring for Allen to be fired and a guy who has been on ESPN for years to be hired, when the reality is he probably is more legend and story than he is coach material anymore.
Same with McKenzie. Matt Flynn aside, he’s done a damn good job clearing out the roster and getting rid of dead money. Yes, he had a bad draft last year, but there has GOT to be a some more time given to guys that are trying to turn around a team. This churning through coaches BS does no good.
Thanks, and go As.
I agree with this. As danbot said in an earlier thread, last year the Raiders were terrible and expensive. This year they’re terrible and cheap.
That’s exactly what moribund franchises do, though, and why they stay moribund for a couple of decades.
As opposed to firing coaches every year without actually letting them put a team together and have some time to make it work?
Thanks, and go As.
If Allen is indeed fired, I really hope to god it’s because McKenzie legitimately doesn’t agree with his coaching philosophy, not because of some idiotic scapegoat fantasy.
Allen has done good work with very little, I think. And I’m seriously impressed with the defense McKenzie built almost literally from scratch. Sure, they ran out of gas towards the end of the year, but that was to be expected from a unit built from castoffs and career part-time players.
I agree with this. Also, while I’m not sold on DA by any means, I have been impressed by the work of the other coaches, especially Tarver on defense, Sparano with the o-line, and April on special teams. Allen presumably deserves some credit for having a solid coaching staff underneath him. But mostly, unless they already have a deal in hand for some superstar coach like Gruden, this franchise desperately needs some stability.
I’ve been saying give McKenzie and Allen another year…unless you can get Gruden.
Hey, we agree on something about the Raiders!
It’s the end of the world as we know it…and I feel fine.
Allen on the comments by Pryor’s agent:
is bed his speech writer?
See you guys thought I was joking but that’s how he talks…he’s a football coach who coaches football players playing football.
My only Candlestick memories are of freezing my ass off in August at Giants games. It’s a dump but there have been some great games played there and I’m sure 49ers/Giants fans have some great memories of the place.
I have great memories of the A’s celebrating the only title ever won there.
I hardly remember any of the games of 1989 series even though that’s my favorite A’s team ever…I just remember the quake and the aftermath.
Did I ever tell this story? Oh well, if so, screw it. I’m telling it again.
When the ’89 quake hit, I was finally old enough to be taken somewhere without it being a complete nightmare of a hassle, so me, my parents, and my mom’s two parents packed for a trip to Hawaii. We landed in Honolulu on October 17th, finally getting to the hotel somewhere around the late afternoon, local time. I was one and a half, old enough to know damn well what a TV looked like, so the second we stepped into the room, I made a beeline straight for the power button.
Of course, the TV was set to a news channel, which was immediately broadcasting horrifying images of the Bay Bridge, the Cypress Structure, etc. There goes the vacation. My parents couldn’t connect a call back home to relatives until about 3 in the morning.
Turns out everything was fine when we got back. Not a single thing was out of place.
It taught me that television wants to hook the viewer by making you think the destruction is widespread…but they do that by showing shots of the same damage OVER and OVER and OVER. It permanently changed the way I view disaster coverage on TV.
If you’ve told the story I don’t remember reading it…obviously it’s something that made an impression on you even at such a young age.
I just couldn’t afford tickets to every game of the World Series in 1989. Went to Games 1 and 2 at the Coliseum but was in Hayward heading home to watch Game 3 when the quake hit.
I went to a few Giants home games every year in the 80s, but like Bed the weather stands out more than any specific baseball memory.
My most salient memory of being at Candlestick for baseball is freezing my ~8-year-old ass off one summer afternoon in one of those wind tunnel sections down the left field line, desperately buying some “hot chocolate” to warm myself, and burning the hell out of my tongue.
I was also there for the 49ers-Packers playoff game with the Young-to-Owens finish. That play was on the other end of the stadium, though, so I never actually saw it. Most of my memory of that day is of the drunken dipshits behind me yelling at everyone for being insuffiently fanly because we didn’t want to stand the whole four hours.
Mine was Hideo Nomo’s debut game. Went 5 scoreless innings, game went into extras tied 0-0, Dodgers scored 3 in the top of (I think) the 14th, then the Giants answered with 4 in the bottom half for the walkoff win.
Mine was a Nomo game too, because the Candlestick scoreboard operator played Shonen Knife “Riding On The Rocket”.
Game 4 in 1989. yesssssssss
Yep. Also, I think I was there for The Catch, although wasn’t old enough to truly appreciate it.
I saw many Gnats games there during the 80’s. One of the best was this night game (which means I froze my ass off) with the Mets – Dwight Gooden vs Mike Krukow. Despite the fact that the Gnats sucked ass that year, Krukow actually matched Gooden with 9 shutout innings. The Gnats manager sent Krukow out for the 10th inning for some reason, and he promptly blew the game. I think this was the game I got my Croix de Candlestick.
When the Coliseum goes three things that will stand out will be a 15 inning day game I saw there in 2001 against the Blue Jays. I was visiting and we decided to go to the game. By the end there was maybe 500 people in the stands but it was fun game and the A’s won.
Second would be my first Raiders game which was in 1980. It was against the Chargers and we won the game and the Super Bowl later in the season.
Third would be seeing Genesis there in 1992. I had just gotten home to spend some time with friends and the family that summer. I went with two good friends and my high school girlfriend on sort of a last fling kind of deal. It was a big crowd and the We Can’t Dance Tour is probably my favorite Genesis tour…it was a fun night and we stayed at a fancy hotel in San Francisco and ran up a big bill but that’s what Dad’s credit card was for.
I hope Dad didn’t say “you’re no son of mine” when he saw the bill.
If he had I would have loved him even more. At the time he was ticked but it’s something we laugh about now.
5/3/2001. The A’s tie the game in the bottom of the 9th when Miguel Tejada scores on a passed ball (blown save to Billy Koch), then win it in the 15th when Frank Menechino drives home Ramon Hernandez to win it.
It was crazy game. I was very sun burnt by the end of it.
is that how you lost your hair?
Nah, I lost my hair when Bridget the Midget snuck into the house and replaced my shampoo with Nair.
Speaking of hair…I wish Willie Mays would realize that, in an era of high-definition television, he needs to have somebody clip his nose hair for him if he’s not up to doing it himself. Yuck.
Say hey trim that nose hair okay?
Willie has one foot in the grave. You’d think the Giants would be phasing in All Time Great Home Run Hitter Barry Bonds as the face of the franchise’s history, but I haven’t seen much movement in that direction.
Perhaps Posey will take that slot down the line.
Hi Bed.
Hi Jennifer.
Well, if the baby doesn’t come our Christmas is going to be ham for Miss Hawaii and steak for me with some mashed potatoes, and asparagus…Little Miss Arkansas will get some Mac & Cheese which is her favorite. My wife has never seen the original Die Hard so we’re going watch that and then just chill out.
If the baby comes tomorrow or on Christmas then it’ll probably just be me watching Die Hard alone…oh wait, it turns out I have to go to the hospital too.
Bed’s first words to his son: “Welcome to the party, pal.”
I wish I was cool enough to do that…if it’s like the last one I’ll be crying and smiling and being just full of joy.
LOOOOOOSEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
(Seriously, though, we’re all excited for you!)
Heh…thanks…I’m in a very rewarding part of my life. I hope everyone who wants to be a parent gets the chance to do so.
Where are the posts about Crispin Glover?
not sure what happened. i used to be such a good gift thinker-upper. my powers are gone. dried up. spent (without a receipt). and the mrs will be the first to notice… i can’t come up with the perfect thing every year and i can’t take the pressure anymore!
I’m pretty good at getting gifts…I’m someone who loves to give gifts so I think that helps.
So far the 49ers are marking the final game at the Stick by bringing back memories of the Steve DeBerg/O.J. Simpson Era.
Mr DUI and uh…a killer running back?
anybody else can’t shake hearing “living in the united states” when listening to Ice age by joy division?
Uh…sure.
Hrm, don’t have that problem, I have been listening to the Warsaw demos again recently, soooooo good!
winter is good for that
Winter is good for sleeping and that’s about it.
For those keeping score at home I just successfully finished doing the laundry…we took it one load at a time and we never took our eyes off the bleach…it was a team effort and I’m proud of how our towels came out of the dryer.
My Anchorman 2 review…
There are several extremely funny moments, and some really weird stuff (which I love) but it’s about 15 minutes too long (like many movies) and the story isn’t quite as good as the first one. All in all it’s a movie that made me laugh and made laugh hard, and I’ll likely see at least parts of it several more times, but it’s not as good as the original.
I’ll give it a B+
I had this talk with the GF today. There aren’t many sequels that are better than originals.
Thanks, and go As.
Godfather Part II is debatable, but at worst, it’s on par with the original.
Aliens
Terminator 2
What else?
The Empire Strikes Back
Aha. Definitely. Was that a true sequel, though? Or did Lucas conceive of the whole thing from the outset?
That’s also why I don’t consider Return of the King eligible here.
I think he probably had the story in mind, but the movie wasn’t sure to happen unless Star Wars was a hit. The Rings movies are different to me because they were basically made all at once, right?
Ah, that’s probably true. And yeah, they shot all three of the Lord of the Rings simultaneously, so those are definitely out.
I have problems distinguishing between the Lord of the Rings movies as they aren’t my cup of tea but in my memory I enjoyed the first one the most.
While we’re at it, The Wrath of Khan, obviously.
The Road Warrior
Silence of the Lambs (if you count Manhunter)
Dawn of the Dead
The Manhunter/Silence of the Lambs one is tricky. Based on the books it’s obviously a sequel but no one who worked on Manhunter worked on Silence of Lambs. I actually really like Manhunter outside of the last 10 minutes…I liked the climax in the Red Dragon book better. Silence of Lambs is a great, great movie.
I liked Alien and Terminator more than their sequels even though those we both good sequels. Many people would say The Dark Knight was better than Batman Begins. The Wrath of Khan, The Road Warrior also come to mind.
I’m solidly w/ you on Alien, two different genres, first was a psycho-thriller horror drama, the sequel was a fucking 13 yr old boys rodeo of a wet dream. I love them both but feel like the first is the better movie overall.
That’s good analysis of the two films.
I havent seen either in a long time so I could be off, but what about Superman II?
Yeah, it’s been years since I saw those movies but I remember really liking the first two Superman movies quite a bit as a little kid.
Oh, and Rocky IV.
I love the first four Rocky movies, I pretend part 5 never happened and I thought that the last one was a nice coda to the story.
I was blown away at how much I enjoyed Rocky Balboa. No, it wasn’t great, and no, it didn’t equal the first four, but it was a surprising amount of fun. It may have helped that I almost literally had a below-zero expectation, but I thoroughly enjoyed that one.
I had basically the same thoughts on it. After part 5 I had zero expectations and then Sly made a solid, well crafted movie and ended the story on a nice note.
The Road Warrior
Holy Toledo, a new commenter! Welcome.
Obligatory: Your first comment was in a queue needing specific approval, but now that the first one has posted, future comments will post immediately.
yes, a good one.
Welcome
Thanks for the welcomes.
The first one is also very solid from what I remember, but Mad Max 2 is one of the greats.
I haven’t seen the first Mad Max in forever…the sequel is one of my favorite action movies of the 80’s.
Yeah, every action scene is a really fantastic time. Especially that final sequence.
I’d love to see it on the big screen someday.
I like your avatar.
Thanks :)
I’m a big fan of both the book and film.
Welcome to the party, East Bay Evans.
Wilkommen!
Howdy.
Greetings and salutations!
It’s a Festivus miracle! Welcome!
Spent five hours at the beach today. I sure do not miss winters in the rest of the country.
i work tomorrow
Not much chance of being saved by a snow day, either.
there’s snow on mauna kea right now. actually, it’s below freezing on mauna kea right now.
Are you talking about the part that is elevation of 13000 feet?
at what altitude does it stop being hawaii???
though daytime cams show no snow sticking.
I got to work by 7:30 for a telecon with the Parisians that was cancelled just after I left home. The big upside is that the goal of the telecon was to dump a whole load of work onto me for the holidays, so now I get the time off free and clear.
Polarbear got papers out! You should kick back and relax!
Yeah … and one of them is destined for Nature (reviewers willing).
I hear there is a third one in the works?
Yup.
I’m not entirely thrilled about the way they’ve come out, but there are funding/agency drivers at work.
I pretty much always want to keep working on papers, but I guess someone has to draw the line eventually.
We had a half day today and I’m off for the rest of the week.
:(
I’m listening to the Bill Simmons NFL picks podcast with Cousin Sal so I can catch up on what’s going on in the NBA…seriously, one of Simmons friends needs to tell him he’s gone off his rocker with all the NBA stuff…who cares about the NBA in December? This is football’s time of year.
Hmm…I really haven’t posted anything too random or silly tonight…that’s either good or bad depending on your point of view…I’m just feeling really mellow this evening. I was plenty random and silly earlier in the this thread so we’re good.
I heard that last 49er foghorn from my apartment. Last time I guess.
For a minute or two it looked like they might be able to start rigging the explosives tonight. Now they have to leave the place standing for a few more weeks.
Crap, I didn’t leave work in time. Oh well, 280 it is then!
I thought I heard the explosives, but it was just fireworks.
Seriously. Nearly an ugly loss (Falcons would have taken the lead w/o that crazy pick-6), but we survived.
Bowman is a goddamn monster.
I would be ecstatic if he and P-52 are Niners for life.
Also, I think he finally has Ed Reed beaten in the homeless guy beard look.
Thanks, and go As.
happy days getting longer!
What’s the movie you wish most had a sequel but never did?
Master and Commander for me…I love that movie and it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger.
Deadwood.
Terriers, goddammit.
I would send money to the producers for a second season of Terriers.
Rome.
For years it was Beetlejuice. Now I worry that they will do it and ruin a childhood memory.
No matter how bad it may be you’ll still have that childhood memory…I loved that movie as a kid too.
Just turned on Comedy Central and thought of one I not only always wanted, but was sure would happen. Trading places. As a kid I was sure the Coming to America scene was set up for just that.
Buckaroo Banzai
Blade Runner
Dune
buckaroo banzai for sure
There’s a movie I haven’t thought about in years.
I’m hesistant to ask for a sequel to most things, because like you just said, most sequels are crap, which would just tarnish my memory of the original. But something I’ve wanted to see for a while?
Kill Bill, Vol. 3. Tarantino said for years that he wanted to make a true sequel to parts 1/2, starring Vernita Green’s daughter avenging her mother’s death by trying to kill Beatrix. Unfortunately, he’s recently said that he’s uninterested and that it’s not gonna happen.. Lame.
Hmm…there’s a sequel I liked more. I hated, HATED Kill Bill Vol. 1 and yet I really enjoyed Kill Bill Vol. 2.
Oh dude…
Kill Bill Vol. 1 may be my favorite thing Tarantino’s ever done. Seriously. He’s never had more fun while making a movie, and it shines through.
I had to be held down with the people I saw it with to stay for the whole movie…I truly, truly hate that movie. It’s in my bottom 10 of all time and it’s high on the list.
But then you willingly saw the second? Huh.
I saw it on DVD and only after being talked into it and it’s one of my favorite Tarantino movies…probably third after Jackie Brown and Pulp Fiction.
Good choice on Jackie Brown. Everyone always forgets about that one. It’s great.
(No love for Inglourious Basterds?)
Bed Ranks Tarantino
1. Jackie Brown
2. Pulp Fiction
3. Kill Bill Vol. 2
4. Reservoir Dogs
5. Inglorious Basterds
6. Django Unchained
7. Death Proof
8. Kill Bill Vol. 1
I really like the first four movies on this list. The rest I’m not all that fond of.
Hmm. I had to knock KB Vol. 1 down a place even though it’s my personal favorite, since this is more of me trying to be semi-objective.
1. Inglourious Basterds
2. Kill Bill Vol. 1
3. Pulp Fiction
4. Jackie Brown
5. Kill Bill Vol. 2
6. Reservoir Dogs
7. Django Unchained
NR. Death Proof (haven’t seen it or its Rodriguez twin)
There’s a pretty sizable gap between 4 and 5, though even last on this list isn’t bad.
Death Proof is fairly meh outside of Kurt Russell’s performance.
Tarantino movies tend to be something I either really like or actively dislike.
Whichever one I saw (part of) was just unwatchably tedious.
I kinda wish Tarantino would make a holiday movie, like a parallel universe version of It’s a Wonderful Life. “Zuzu’s shell casings!” That might suit me well tonight.
I could use any of the following:
1. A laugh
2. A hug
3. A drink
4. All of the above
Two of those are something I require every day…good thing I have several George Carlin stand up videos and a really good body pillow.
A priest, a lawyer, and a horse walk into a bar, and the bartender says “What is this, some kind of joke?”
Also, you’re allowed to drink any time after noon on non-work days. I need to stay relatively sober before Xmas Eve dinner with the inlaws later, so I’m limiting myself to only beer and hard liquor.
I’m working. I just texted you about it.

We have a little water fall in the backyard that I made and last night that puppy froze even with running water…just a wee bit chilly here.
Half of the lights on my blinking Christmas light necklace have stopped blinking, tragically. Also predictably, since they’re cheap Chinese mass produced ebay products.
Last year I bought five of these, knowing a short lifespan was inevitable. I get hella compliments for them, so I stockpiled, but now I’m down to three, each of which only semi-works. So tonight and tomorrow I’ll wear them all together for maximum effect. And then I’ll re-stock with a dozen for next year.
I think a store here in town sells them for $1 each.
I sell my love for $1 a kiss.
Lily rediscovered the one you gave us last year and has been enjoying it mightily.
Also too
The Colts have beaten the Broncos, Seahawks, 49ers and Chiefs…I think they’re my AFC Super Bowl pick now that Von Miller is out for the Broncos and Gronk is gone for the Pats.
In the NFC I’ll take the Seahawks slightly over the 49ers.
The Colts are a very jekyll and hyde team though. They have some very odd losses this year.
With Miller out, though, I have a very hard time thinking it’s anybody BUT the Colts coming out of the AFC, and it will really depend on which team shows up in the SB against Seattle/Carolina/SF/New Orleans.
I would say it’s basically a coin flip out of those 5 teams.
Thanks, and go As.
I haven’t followed the AFC closely enough to have an informed opinion, but I’m damn sure rooting for the Alex Smiths.
I think it’ll be Seattle from the NFC, unless they lose this weekend and don’t get home field advantage. No way they can get there without home field, which would make my choice either Carolina or us, depending upon how I feel about our offense in any given moment.
I love the Panthers…I’ve been a big Cam Newton guy since day one but I think they’re a year away.
cheese, is there nothing it can’t do?
…and to all a good night.
still no baby?
Nope, he seems quite happy where he is.
Merry christmas, everybody!
Except bed and Mrs. Hawaii. You two are giving that kid a late-December birthday? One round of presents for the whole year? For shame.
We’re both right bastards that’s for sure…well that and clearly we’re a bit frisky in the early spring.
caga tió, y’all!
may your log shit a load of presents!!
This made my day!
Merry Christmas, you FKing old Building and Loan!
Happy Birthday Jesus!!! from us kind folks at the Jesus Freak division of Atheists Incorporated!!! <3 you all and hope you are in the spirit of everything beautiful <3 <3 <3
is beds baby going to be named crib?
It’s more his nickname really to go along with his sister, Trundle.
When they are college age does it become futon?
No, that’s when they become really expensive so we need a fancy bed name at that point.
So is it true that Twins run in your family?
Twin Beds…Twice the fun, twice the evil.
How about Chaise?
Wow, that is perfect. So much so that I hope it becomes Bed’s actual new FK username when he goes through his next transition.
Nah…me changing usernames is so AN.
Chaise Longue can be your drag queen name, should you ever need one.
Well, I’ve always wanted one so now I’m set.
