Because it’s apparently better to give them more than a half-season worth of games while reducing the dwindling weeknight plan to a handful. Unfortunately the first encroachment was 30+ years ago – do you know how to find out if that was done with approved plans, and if so how?

If they encroached onto your property 30+ years ago and nobody did anything about it, you might have an adverse possession problem.* That doesn’t mean they can encroach more further now, of course.
*I’m not at all qualified to opine on this. I don’t know anything about property law other than what’s necessary to pass the bar, and I don’t even really know that anymore.
That’s one concern, although I’m told that adverse possession is different in California because ownership is tied to the payment of property tax on the land.
Adverse possession is really really hard to actually show. No idea whatsoever about California eccentricities.
Late to the property law party, but yeah, we’ve got an adverse possession thing happening with one of Mom’s neighbors who claims that my (now deceased) Dad told him “Sure, you can take down that fence and cross the property line with your patio and part of your garage.” Which actually could be true, knowing my friendly Dad, and the fact that the property in question is completely unusable by us because it’s about a 6-foot strip on the other side of a creek… and the actual legal property line is just bizarrely placed.
But now it’s an issue because he has built a little staircase down the creekbank, which is a city no-no (in fact, there is an easement so he shouldn’t have been building the patio & garage where he did, regardless of where the property line is)… and he’s also built some storage racks for random shit along another part of the creekbank, which I have a problem with because a) the creek flows into the city’s storm drain canals that go directly to the Bay, and I have no idea whether there’s anything toxic among his random stored shit… b) he has little kids, and if either of them (or anyone) meanders down the illegally built stairs and gets hurt, they are getting hurt ON MY MOM’S SIDE OF THE LEGAL PROPERTY LINE (and the guy is a total dick who probably would sue her if he could)… and c) the random shit is really an eyesore that I have to look at every time I go to my car, and it bugs me that he’s uglifying my home turf.
My mom is too apathetic to do anything about it, and I’m not on her title, so I can’t legally do anything. (Other that report him to… whoever I’d report him to. Which I don’t want to do because he’d know it came from our side of the creek, and I already suspect the guy vandalized Alex’s car as retaliation for what he thought was Alex’s dog’s poo in his yard.)
