The blog isn’t dead, he’s just resting.
1. Slusspeculation that Colon
will seek a one-year contract similar to the one Hiroki Kuroda signed with the Yankees last winter ($15 million).
andeuxpeculation: Per our previous discussions, that’s probably too rich for the A’s blood, but not high enough that they can feel safe making a qualifying offer of $14.1M in order to net a draft pick. Drat.
2. History of the gyroball from Deadspin. (Summary: it does exist, sort of, but is basically the same as a backup slider. And Will Carroll was confused/full of crap, as usual.)
3. The NYker has a story about contenders for the world’s hottest chili pepper, which is moderately interesting, but linked because someone is described as
a professor of horticulture and former sauerkraut expert
Has he not been able to keep up with advances in kraut technology? (Or is he an expert on substances that used to be sauerkraut?)
Not dead. Quiet, like a church.
I hope people make a habit of taking pictures licking it. Even better is if there’s an water pipe at the tip and if it were to explode.
They should write “Welcome to Jamaica, have a nice day” on the roof.
1/$15 seems too high for Colon. I doubt he gets that (at least without a contract that’s incentive based), but yeah, a QO is seeming unlikely right now.
I agree. If there is a team out there that wants to spend $15MM on Colon, I highly doubt they’d give up a draft pick too.
I’m trying to convince myself not to visit Oakland in December.
Why?
It might be a good time to apply for jobs, when not so many people are looking. But it can be damp.
It has been raining all week here. I’m taking 2 big girl nursey classes at work coming up… this should help.
“I am your ruler! I command that you bow. And trade me your right-handed bats.”
Just quick thanks to everyone who took time to meet up.
It was a delight to meet you both – next time stay longer.
I am sorry to have missed everyone.
On the bright side, baby boy was born early Sunday morning. Everyone is happy and healthy!
Pictures or it never happened!
(Congratulations)
Thank you ( to everyone! ).
Trying to embed a pic…
Oh my! Beautiful.
I love those little pink/blue striped beanies, we still have the ones our kids were given immediately after their births.
congrats
This is wonderful. Congratulations!
Wonderful! Congratulations!
Aaaaw!!! And congrats again. Or still. :)
Congrats!
Way to make a person
As if he had anything to do with that…
Way to go, Snow Cone! Huzzah!
Yay!
Hooray!
congrats! <3
Awesome, congrats dad!
Congrats!
Congratulations!
Yay, woohoo!
Woooo! Congrats!!!
This. Or tell Bud to schedule an A’s game in Germany.
Or just stay!
’twas a pleasure!
I am so sorry that I wasn’t able to make it happen. I hope and trust you enjoyed yourselves immensely.
Declining the $8 million on Anderson would go a nice long way towards $15 million for Colon.
Grant really is an idiot.
His eyes. I can’t look away. It’s like his stare is baking cupcakes in my soul.
Yeah, don’t drag us down with your team’s sorry showing.
Adrian Cárdenas on why he quit baseball.
Wow, that is amazing. What a fascinating guy. Good for him.
before I read it is it “nobody wants a no defense 3000 OBA guy”?
either that number is inflated or OBA doesn’t mean ordinary brooklyn awareness.
really? a pro player / NYU student who doesn’t know where the dodgers came from? quick. someone sell this guy a bridge.
I found that part weird too.
his parents are immigrants as I recall and know nothing about baseball. they are artsy people.
He’s going to make a killing with that philosophy degree.
so are mine. but i managed to find out where the dodgers came from anyway.
but the parental part isn’t the surprise to me. it’s that he’s a scholar and a devoted baseball player, and we’re talking about baseline cultural literacy.
He could be using hyperbol to make a point
hyperbolic is a word when people start to listen
especially arch-minded people, they pay close attention
you might not believe it, you might not even buy it
but when it comes to this blog, you might want to try it
hyperbolic
hyperbolic
now all you hyperbolic people try to reason with this rhyme
you may think that you are def, and i may be dumb and blind
so we better listen good to what he has to say
cause when it comes to future ed we ain’t got no play
hyperbolic
hyperbolic
now he’s the freshest ed from coast to coast
the man can cut and scratch, so he don’t need to boast
he may be a little wrong, but that’s okay
cause when he makes a point it sounds this way
(hit it!)
hyperbolic
hyperbolic
* comes to future ed, WE ain’t got no play
heh
the biggest heh in the universe!
fixed
the most thanks ever!
so i forgot an e
sue me
or get ed to
nah, i wasn’t bagging on your spelling. just riffin’.
If he didn’t know, the NYer fact-checkers sure as hell do, so they must have decided to leave it in there for piquancy.
Now hold on. Perhaps nobody really wants to have guys who can get OTHER people on base while at the plate.
Hey I meant to tell you all I made a music blog page, with links to rare and cool shit :)
Whoa. Sweet!
if you took a notion, to jump into the ocean…
woooo!
This is an improvement for Slingblade. (SBN Link)
If I were clever, I would have titled this “A dead grill or a live blog.”
What are two things you should never be caught in bed with, Alex?
Two things you should never be caught in with Bed.
The keezer project is well on it’s way.
The CO2 tank came from Craigslist, but the rest ended up being bought new (impatience + flaky CL sellers). I hooked everything up before heading east last week and returned to a 5 gallon keg of perfectly carbed and chilled FKing delicious beer.
Over the winter I’ll build the collar and we should be good to go for the first tailgate of the season.
Who is the skipper of the Navy’s newest ship? Captain Kirk, naturally.
Shit.
I wonder if he wrote that while on the can.
Berkeley dwellers: anyone want to bet on whether Ken Sarachan actually lives up to his latest promise re 2501 Haste St.? Color me skeptical.
Looks like he has delusions of being the west-coast version of Gaudi.
So he’s going on a “Not going to stop eating” strike?
(I must say I just had my decision not to wear a costume or go to the staff Halloween party validated when the marketing department posted pictures of it on FB and Twitter.)
Brett could use some experience with working class ennui to temper the thoughtlessness that comes from sheltered privilege.
I did not wear a costume to work myself. But my boss dressed as up as Don King!
Yes, yes he could. But I’m happy to have him continue his sheltered privilege, I would just prefer he do it in the National League.
I did not dress up either. But Figgy chose to come to work as Buffy the Vampire Slayer
On the plus side this year, our zombie barbie army finally got the Barbie Scream House they’ve always wanted. Not due the White Elephant Sale, but rather a delightful bit of curbside scavenging.
Those are fantastic!
I didn’t dress up either, but Lily was Zombie Hermione
I tried to reprise my costume from Saturday, but found I had lost my head.
So I threw on a cape and was a superhero
LOL That’s a pretty sweet costume!
realized last night the genius of the zombie costume is that you get to be not just a zombie, but a zombie _____ .
The world is your zombie oyster!
Here is my Halloween blog post, incl. a DVD of Miles Davis recorded 40 years ago on 11/1/1973! Boo!
Jane Lee is more bullish on the outcome of the Colonoscopy:
intestin’… vedddy intestin’.
contract mavens: do you think a 2 year offer makes better bet than a qualifying offer? How about something like 14=$10M, 2015=$10M option $3 buyout?
I know nothing from nothing about contract prices.
It’s a lot more than I’d like to commit to Colon, but I am very bearish on him.
I know he pitched great last year but he’s 40, in awful physical shape, and throws fastballs 85% of the time. If he loses any velocity, his value drops to that of a batting practice pitcher.
I wouldn’t give him more than $8MM for a single year, with something like $1MM incentives for 150 and 175 IP.
I would put out the QO. We only want him on a 1 year deal. We need him.
I’m still on the fence about whether he really would get any offers that are close to the $14M QO. It would be lame to hand that out if the real market for Colon was closer to 1/$10. I guess this is the sort of thing that an MLB front office should have some good insight into, so I’m inclined to trust Beane’s decision, unless his decision leads to Colon signing a bargain deal with another team and the A’s just let him leave.
Happy New Year, FK family.
I never figured you for a Federal Fiscal Year kind of gal.
ha!
Nice Rany Jazeyerli piece on Orson Scott Card and why his current craziness and bigotry shouldn’t affect our appreciation of the books he wrote in his saner days.
It kind of sounds like he was always that way. He was just very inclusive of everyone else. I’d guess he’s in the closet though. Deep in there, but in there.
SHOCKING! FUCKIN A MOVES!
or something
And somewhere in the Central Valley, 5Aces heaves a contented sigh of relief, at long last.
World Series? Sewn. FKing. Up.
I look forward to another year of hearing about Brett Anderson, potentially our best starter.
or how once the playoffs start we’ll get him back and BAM, like making a blockbuster trade in OCTOBER!
I think you mean how he’s in the best shape of his career coming into Spring Training.
I hope it’s the Miami or Kansas City media saying that.
Wait. Who’s going to be our back up, back up, back up catcher now?
MaEl of course

You.
Woot! Money!!!
a record store opened 3 blocks from my office. i’m in trouble.

best costume of the year goes to the lovely young lady at the nightlight last night, dressed as little edie in her 4th of july “best thing to wear for the day” complete with flag and dance. doing movie characters is my favorite, but from a documentary??? i am humbled.
—
i suck way worse than CY25 at not hitting HRs outside of houston. can i have $1.5mill to not play too?
—
dammit, the question i meant to ask elcro but forgot. how many zeros does a billion have in eastern europe or europe in general? real, actual, fact-based question.
Old school 12, but increasingly 9.
all of europe? UK/the rest?
You mean there’s more the Europe than the UK?
yes… IRELAND!
Splitters!
also, file under “stuck a feather in his cap and called it macaroni”:
is this another case of USA’ians being too isolationist/self-involved to understand the way everybody else does it, yet end up proliferating the error hegemonically till everybody is doing it wrong?
or is 9 really the correct billion?
yes it is.
look, if you keep asking this question, I am going to have to shovel 3 feet of crap into your room and turn up the temperature to 90 degrees.
Fahrenheit, Centigrade, or Kelvin?
ITYM Celsius.
That depends on your geography and epoch.
Incidentally, Celsius’ original scale confusingly went from 100 (freezing) to 0 (boiling).
what are these nonsense words you are typing?
1,000,000,000
= a thousand million.
I wish this basketball prospect would switch over to baseball so we could draft him, because what a name.
That’s fantastic!
I assume you FKin lawyers have already seen this. I hope that if you ever get the chance to file as entertaining a motion that you do share it with us.
After the Tennessee state’s attorney asked the court to stop the defense from referring to her as “The Government,” preferring instead to be called “General,” the defense responded:
Nice. Had not seen.
1 I started using “the government” as a pejorative two trials ago. No feedback yet
2 when you disqualify a judge, you have to be sworn in as a witness. Last time I asked to be sworn in and was commanded to raise my righ hand, I held my hand in the live long and prosper pose while the clerk read the admonition.
Lawyer things are stupid when they are so formal in 2013. Like the one asshole who always starts his moving papers with “come now the people”
I’d imagine it’s quite a risk to try an DQ a judge, eh? If you try and fail, it can’t possibly help your case. And what about the next time you draw that judge? Vulcan mind-meld notwithstanding.
I have only had to do it to one judges face. There is one judge in my jurisdiction i save the dq for (we only getone). I only get sent there, never have to appear there generally. Whenever i am sent, i use my dq.
And thereare certain timing rules. Judged have been know to deny challenges. I don’t see why. Egos are weird
neat recap and possible justification of minor threat in urban outfitters story. best part, reading the comment in bill and ted voices. like, read one sentence as bill and the next one as ted. awesome.
minor league deal
I bet Dallas Braden is also available.
Humber has more toes, though.
didn’t we claim him on waivers a few years back/
A 10 gallon day with the new keggle:
Dinner suggestions for the Vegas strip?
Play table games. Win until they comp you something to get you off the floor.
Leave the strp, go downtown.
Agree completely. Cut you dining bill in half, also find table games with affordable minimums.
thanks everyone, but what i am really looking for are fine dining suggestions on the strip–places that any of you have been to personally and loved. we already have decided on jaleo and comme ca, and really want to find a place that falls into the hugely-insanely-expensive-crazy-for-one-dinner-only category. we are looking for a place we haven’t tried yet.
i’m not a buffet person nor a table player. i go to play slots (gasp!), wear strange only-in-vegas-over-the-top outfits, and eat fancy food. and be surrounded by madness and the up-all-night experience.
xoxo
The only time I went to Vegas I ate at Morels which is the steakhouse place inside the Palazzo.
It was fantastic.
Thanks, and go As.
cool! we will look at the menu.
also, looking for somewhere fun to watch the pats/denver game that sunday night; pref not a sportsbook unless it is really amazing.
Emirel Lagasse’s Stadium Club. Same hotel. Super neat place!
Thanks, and go As.
did you go there for a game?
USA soccer game, but yes.
Thanks, and go As.
I enjoyed SUSHISAMBA quite a bit for the food, and Tao for the atmosphere.
I once ate at a place in Chicago called Sushi Samba Rio. Are they connected? I thought the Chicago place, while very hiply decorated, was pretty terrible.
Chicago and Vegas…connected?
Looks like they are connected.
thank you; i’ll check those out, too. :)
The Paris buffet is IMO the best buffet in Vegas. If you go at 4 (possibly 3, I can’t remember), you’ll get the dinner buffet at lunch prices.
I thought the Bellagio was supposed to be better?
Thanks, and go As.
Not on the strip, but if you like Thai food Lotus of Siam has been called the best Thai restaurant in the country.
I can’treply to ptnl on my phone, that looks enticing.
Religious art by Liz Lemon Swindle is apparently not a prank.
That’s the oldest donut grift in the book.
Well, besides the Entenmann’s shim-sham.
Mormon FTW.
Also Mormon: Eric Sogard
Also Mormon: Adam Rosales (though we traded him to the Catholics, and they traded him right back)
You realize that we are making fun of her art, right?
Of course. I just saw the art and knew that she was Mormon. Clicked a few times and confirmed it.
Good. Carry on then!
Her art yes, but her art in conjunction with her name.
“Go to Hell, Mike Piazza”
That is hilarious, and truly would have been a perfect Ben Stiller character.
We need to get Stomper one of these.
That man goes through wives like Homer goes through donuts… mmm… donuts…
