    The Mariners giveaway for today is a compost bin.

    • batgirl Sep 28,2013 1:37 pm || Up

      I’d love that!

        You can’t have too many. But it does make for some easy jokes at the Mariners’ expense.

  2. Kay Sep 28,2013 1:08 pm

    Hosting the wobbly Tigers and avoiding a surging WC club is the way to go.

    A couple more victories to close out the season would be nice, tho.

      If they do end up with a three-way tie and the winner has to play four games on four consecutive days in four different cities, that might leave them less surging than hanging on by their fingernails.

      • nobody in particular Sep 28,2013 3:16 pm || Up

        I don’t agree with this at all. The body is used to the grind and continuing to play big games often seems to keep the WC team sharp as the division winners wait and get cold. I think of so many teams who were smokin’ and stopped to wait for a team to face for a few days… and then got stomped. The travelling would seem to make it harder but it can amount to a pirate-ship mentality where guys see themselves as a band of pillaging underdogs and the thing can get a momentum. I’d fear a Joe Maddon team, for instance, that had to run a gauntlet like you describe to get to the ALDS…. because he’d have them all motivated and dressed up in costume and on and on.

        I’ll take a DET team that has sat for 4 days like we are gonna.

        You have a fine point there, although it’s moot now to us with the A’s loss.

        I would very much like to see a 3-way tie, because of the glorious clusterfuck it could be.

          I’m rather curious about how that would work in relation to the wild card game. Do they just scrap it in favor of tie breaker games?

          • Soaker Sep 28,2013 10:15 pm || Up

            I believe it’s:
            Texas Tampa Bay @ Cleveland on Monday. Winner is one wild card.
            Loser plays @ Tampa Bay Texas on Tuesday. Winner is other wild card.
            Winners of the two games do the wild card play-in on Wednesday.

            Edit: I had the idea right but had the Rays and Rangers flipped, based on something the Rangers’ radio announcers said yesterday.

              That would be so fking awesome, because it would mean no off days… meaningful baseball every night until the real playoffs start!

    Ken says the A’s may have a “twilight workout” on Wednesday, if the Friday or Saturday games will be around 5 or 5:30, to get used to where the shadows are. Good thinking.

    What is this 5 or 5:30 business? I can see that for the Saturday game, although I still think Boston would get the prime time game and the A’s would play during the day.

    But on Friday, why would they have the A’s play at 5? That would collide with the Red Sox prime time slot.

  6. bear88 Sep 28,2013 2:01 pm

    Parker isn’t looking good at all.

    • lenscrafters Sep 28,2013 2:02 pm || Up

      He hasn’t looked good since the game he was sick.

      • mother pucker Sep 28,2013 2:07 pm || Up

        I would much rather see Gray start game two than Parker. Hell, could even make the case against dropping him from the rotation altogether. All the more reason Straily should make ALDS roster.

        • bear88 Sep 28,2013 2:24 pm || Up

          Let’ s not get carried away. I can make an argument for pushing Parker to Game 3, but is Gray that much better at home? Admittedly, I wouldn’t want Gray pitching an elimination game in Detroit if things go badly in Oakland.

        • lenscrafters Sep 28,2013 2:43 pm || Up

          Parker, Griffin, and Straily are all pretty much the same. There was one who could’ve been a legitimate upgrade but that ship sailed a while ago.

    • mother pucker Sep 28,2013 2:10 pm || Up

      Is his velocity still hovering around 89, 90?

      • bear88 Sep 28,2013 2:23 pm || Up

        A lot of 91s on fastballs, although he just blew away Ibanez with a 93. He’s been hit on fastballs down the middle.

    • bear88 Sep 28,2013 2:45 pm || Up

      Yeah, I don’t want to overreact. It’s a quasi-Spring Training start, but you want to go into the postseason with a key starter pitching well.

      It kinda makes Colon in Game 1 a no-brainer. But given that he will be facing Verlander, Game 2 could be absolutely critical. And Parker just made a crappy case for himself.

  8. Soaker Sep 28,2013 2:43 pm

    Congratulations Red Sox. I hope the wild card team knocks your asses out.

      Also, it looks like the NFL is willing to move the Raiders to an 8:30 Pacific start next Sunday. That’s quite a quadruple-header for those who love their NFL intravenously. So the quick turnaround for the MLB games isn’t much of an issue. I’d bet on 6:30 p.m. for DET-OAK Game 1 on Friday and 5:30 p.m. for Game 2 on Saturday.

    How does that happen? They put a graphic up after Moss’s 30th HR saying he’s the first A to do it since Cust in 2008…. never mind Reddick’s 32 last year I guess.

      Brett Anderson is now a short reliever. If he will be useful in the postseason, he will have to thrive in that role. I’m skeptical.

    I’ve been to 5 games this year–1 Griffin start and 4 Parker starts. The A’s lost all of the Parker starts. The only reason they won the Griffin start was because of DoctorK’s green wig.

    So, I bought tix to game 2 last week. Looks like it’s going to be Parker. Sorry, guys.

    Sign o’ the times: The local bar in my SF neighborhood, which has had some form of Giants logo painted in its window for the entirety of the four years I have lived here, and which has never willingly shown an A’s game on its TVs, suddenly has an A’s logo painted in its window — and no Giants logo.

  18. wacchampions Sep 28,2013 10:28 pm

    On Friday TBS will broadcast 3 of the 4 games and MLBN will broadcast the other game, MLBN has not put there schedule online yet. The TBS games on Friday are at 10:30 AM PST, 2 PM PST and 5:30 PM PST, I have no idea what they will do with Friday, we speculated that they may give the Braves the 10:30 AM game since it is the second game of their series and they are on the East Coast, but we really have no idea….ON Saturday they broadcast at 2 PM PST and 5:30 PST, one of those games will be ours, most likely the 2 PM game, since the Red Sox will likely get the prime time slot…Just a guess! I would also guess that we will get the MLBN game on Friday, but I dont know what time it will be at..

      Bottom of 9th, 2nd and 3rd, one out, infield in. Chopper goes just over the pitcher, but Stanton froze, and the batter is thrown out at first. Shouldn’t both runners go on contact there? Even if they make the play at the plate, you still have the lead runner at 3rd, and where the trailing runner is doesn’t matter.

      Two batters later, Stanton scores on the second wild pitch of the inning.

      Fifth(!) no-hitter in Marlins history.

            I think that statement falls in the never/ always category, I’m sure it would have been much nicer to them to have NOT been swept by the Marlins, one of the worst teams in baseball.

            • James V. Sep 29,2013 12:58 pm || Up

              Sure, but once the A’s locked up homefield in the ALDS it become absolutely meaningless for the Tigers to put in any real effort.

                True that.

                That being said, a short series is always a crap shoot and this Oakland team is good enough to beat anyone if they play well.

              Mine too. Same as Atlanta losing its cool vs Milwaukee last week, or Terry Pendleton losing his cool in the dugout a few days ago. Nothing you can point at after the next series and call causative, of course. But still meaningful.

                Atlanta has a poisonous clubhouse culture, with assholes so tight they shit diamonds. They’re gonna crack under self-induced pressure and commit costly errors on defense. I guarantee it.

                I think the Tigers will be mildly affected by how they shut it down once they had the division locked up. Methinks that shutting down mentally plus a four day layoff will affect the Tigers. The A’s kept their A lineup in and never shut down, and Melvin’s going to do his best to keep the work ethic and intensity up during this week’s workouts tailored to game 1 start time.

                The third time’s the charm. A’s in 4.
