    Speaking of TV announcers, every time I tune in briefly to a Cubs game I’m reminded of how good Jim Deshaies is. Today he was talking about “Baseball’s Sad Lexicon” (the Tinker to Evers to Chance poem) and casually mentioned what “gonfalon” means.

      Younger clone?

      • ptbnl Sep 1,2013 1:34 pm || Up

        Actually no – its a lower ABV (4.5%) Pliny-inspired recipe.

        Technically, since the Older is an 8% and the Younger is 11%, it should really be called Pliny the Geriatric.

        I found a great workaround on my phone but I can’t mirror that to my TV, and I ethically dont’ really like the piracy streaming angle.

        Also the quality of most of those streams are horrible. Why the hell can’t we just use the damn stream we pay money for

        • dmoas Sep 1,2013 1:45 pm || Up

          Because the only way RSN’s make money off baseball and a result MLB makes money off the RSN’s is to force locals to pay for an operator. Bypassing it locally online kills revenue streams. And based on those TV contracts, that’s huge money.

        There was a legendary game where Preston Gomez, the Padres manager, had RHP Al Santorini start the game. Secretly, he had LHP Dave Roberts warming up somewhere under the stands. Santorini pitched to the required one batter, then Gomez brought in Roberts to pitch the rest of the game. Deservedly, the Padres lost. It was the first game of a doubleheader. Santorini started the second game “for real”, and the Padres lost that one too.
