We had a naming party for Milo. The top vote getter was Jack.
Just so you know, I bought your children wood mini bats.
You didn’t go with my recommendation of slingshots?
BUT WHAT ABOUT JARTS?
theo once asked me what a lawnmower was. after I thought I had succinctly explained, he asked me what a lawn was.
That’s so cute.
#theburbanlife
Wearin’ Jorts, throwin’ Jarts…
Sounds like summer in rural Louisiana to me!
woot woot!
Someone got my brother a hatchet for his third birthday. I barely survived.
Someone gave their 4 year old son a hatchet to play with the other children with last time I went family camping. And then left for an hour.
nice
Just wanted to give you a heads up.
Jack is a good strong name.
yay but the next day we wnet to the zoo and overheard 4 different families disiplining a “Jack” and I worried the name might be too popular and my kid would be “Jack S.”
All I can say is in my years teaching more classic names like Jack were rare…I probably taught about 300 Tylers and Taylors though.
Jack is big here. Funny thing, when theo came back from day care one day and talked about a new friend named “Daniel” I swear to god, I said to him “Daniel? that’s an unusual name”
Names go up and down in popularity…I like simple and traditional names.
there is a girl at the school named Phadra. all I can think of is this
phaedra?
right. Phaedra
my sis had a bff named that in hs, a thousand years ago. i like her mythology. (phaedra, not my sis’s bff’s)
right. but I only know it from lee and nancy.
SUrprisingly, when I told the mother all I could think of was lee hazelwood when she told me, “but you probably get that all the time” i said. she replied that no one had told her that.
I knew a girl named Phaedra in grammar school. I had a crush on her, but I didn’t think she even knew I existed until she friended me on the Facebook a couple years ago.
I love that song!
My ex-girlfriend and I used to cover it at open mic nights…
Its my fav lee/nancy song
just barely edging out “Sand.”
Did they ever sing “These Boots Are Made For Walkin'” as a duet?
not that I am aware of.
does this count?
you know, I haven’t heard that since college. its more offensive than I remembered.
I tried to find a youtube of Phaedra Vision by Vee Dee (Chicago psych-punk) but came up empty.
Hey now.
Why are you renaming him? What’s wrong with Milo?
this
Before he was born was the party
I thought you were letting him choose his name now.
That would have bee awesome! But Milo is badass anyway.
consensus!
I’m still confused.
instead of a baby shower, we had a baby naming party because we were not sure what we wanted to name him. we had a ballot with about 12 names on it.
Did you name him after The Phantom Tollbooth?
no factor was overwhelming. It was on the top of the list, but there were some hesitations on our part
there’s was this band… they had a singer… he went to college.
half kidding. i remember a multifactor milo wave in 2004. is that bout milo’s BD?
2008.
yeah, one of our acquaintances, named his kid Milo in 2004 or so. that was one of the no factors. But we don’t see him anymore, haven’t since we left Seattle. except when we are there. But we don’t call him, but we bump into him at things. y’know?
i had a kids’ computer lab to take care of that year. one volunteer sysadmin came and said, it’ll be cuter if we give all the computers real names instead of 1000001, 1000002… he named one after his own kid, milo. about half year later, different sysadmin married couple came by to volunteer maintenance. she was pregnant. saw the computer and said, oh, we’re having a milo! such a unique name, how did you come up with it? i explained. she gave me a look like i’d stolen something.
both times i asked them. but none of them knew about the descendents. FK’n posers.
Oh. The Descendents. I’ve…seen their t-shirts.
those shirts rock!
i don’t wanna grow up
Ed’s a Toys ‘R Us kid.
If. Growing up. Means being like you.
I am the friend of justin in this story.
I actually met the writer’s wife at baladium in Alameda.
hello.
Is it me you’re looking for?
yes.
The lounge is a good place to look for me.
good thing i looked here, then.
Hello!
CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOU ON SATURDAY!
Me too! I want to go to the lot right now!
I wish today wasn’t an off day
feels like it.
IT WAS DAMMIT
it was. at least in the 9th, it was.
it’s so nice out. we should go.
Where and what time?
if that is to me, 2 p.m. at A8
I shall be there!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS :D
Is this the Lounge where we get up and boogie?
Dance the night away.
why the hell not. let’s do it.
shit. i need moar wine.
Our long National Football League preseason nightmare is now over.
PLEASE DON’T SAY ANYTHING BECAUSE MY GAME IS CHIPPED.
No worries…I only watch Raiders preseason games so I have no idea what happened with the Pats.
good. carry on, then.
I LOLed at the end of your game. You can guess why!
Do you prefer fresh water fish or saltwater fish to eat?
raw fish. from the seeeeaaaaaa.
I grew up eating freshwater fish from lakes in the midwest, and I hated fish. Then I had saltwater fish and realized that it’s a completely different animal. Saltwater all the way.
Saltwater.
salt
Olivia Wilde or Olivia Munn?
olivia newton john.
Let’s get physical.
Yes.
Yeah, there really is no wrong answer here.
Get out of my head. Just earlier I saw a photo of Munn and thought, that’s attractive?
Her and Jeff Daniels sexy gobbler neck are the only things keeping me watching The Newsroom…I actively hate every other character.
I like Jim, but Im only two episodes in.
Yes.
If I had to choose, Munn. But I’d take both.
Wilde
Definitely Wilde
But thats like saying the mona lisa or stary night
There seems like a lot of new taglines up…I’m digging almost all of them.
They are all mine. I’m a fucking genius.
Well, I think we already knew that.
Damn right. Bought time you fuckers bowed to my awesomeness.
Heck, I haven’t actually been an A’s fan in years…I just come to FK to talk to you and for the free kraut…I’m still waiting on the free kraut by the way.
Freak out!
And I’m not really human.
Fair enough…I’m actually a sock puppet.
Your penis doesn’t count.
heh
I’m just here to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I live Doublemint.
My posts in this lounge make more sense if you read them in the voice of Treat Williams.
I like Spam better.
Miss Hawaii is that you?
Shouldn’t she be Mrs. Arkansas now?
Nah, my wife will always be Miss Hawaii.
This is the last time I’m going to lounge on my old computer here so I guess I should go full Kamikaze.
please get this song out of my head.
I lost on Jeopardy, baby.
argh.
If you could only have one album while you were stranded on the Tom Hanks island to listen to what would it be?
so happy i have no idea what the “tom hanks island” is. thank you, goddess!
The island from Castaway.
and that means nothing to me. that makes me happy.
Well, it’s a movie I love…I think Tom Hanks is an amazing actor.
i think you know that i know pretty much nothing about movies or tv
I guess a Film Fest picked by you and Kay would be a pretty short festival. I love movies so mine would last far too long.
kay’s fest would be good. mine would just be all of us hanging out and drinking beer. there would be good food, though.
I don’t think Kay is a big movie watcher either. I know she likes to cook though so we would eat well.
We would watch Forbidden Planet and The Big Lebowski, and then I’d be all like,
“Damn! We just watched TWO movies! That’s like, a whole YEAR’S worth!”
<3
Heh…yeah, we’re opposites on this one. In my movie watching prime back when I never slept I watched 10 or so movies a week easily.
“Signaling Help for Dummies” audio cd.

When the teacher in me sees some of the grammar in my posts I really want to grab my red pen.
That didn’t end like I had anticipated.
I’m feeling PG-13 tonight.
How does Brian Wilson eat soup?
50% goes in his mouth…50% goes in the beard to eat later.
Think of the shit that collects there during moustache rides. Literally shit I’m guessing.
you know why cowboys always have shit in their mustaches?
No….
that, and so many others horrible jokes, learned from actual adult leaders during boy scouts campfires.
punchlines include:
…hickies on your hemorrhoids.
[yodeling] …and i laid thee ole lady toooo.
…he got to 98, so he jacked off, backed off, and fucked the other two.
…forget the two by four, help me find the car keys and we can drive out of here.
it’s a fine line between i killed at the lounge and i killed the lounge.
i’m still listening…
Don’t I know it…
do we even want to know this
not. even.
I can’t imagine living with that kind of beard.
Saran wrap with a hole cutout?
I always try and figure out who did which tagline…it’s not always easy. It is obvious whose name appears the most though.
Tenor saxophone solo!
i’ll take the ten.
can one buy duct tape at joann’s?
I have some in the garage.
that doesn’t really help. i think in need 4 rolls or 5.
Well, the fact that this tape is in Arkansas also makes it less useful. I probably have 7 or 8 rolls out there…it’s handy stuff.
Who are you taping up?
not who. what. and a bunch of white cloth.
That’s much less fun. I was hoping you were gonna tape someone up and then… well, I was gonna offer to help.
It’s actually kinda fun, but you gotta have patience if you’re the one getting taped.
It takes a long minute to work the safety shears under the layers of tape and cut someone out.
The same feeling can be achieved more cheaply and safely with industrial pallet wrap.
i just need to know how to tape these fucking white curtains up!!!
tape… curtains? like to the rod, or the hem?
to (hopefully) a doorway. if not, we are fucked.
staples.
Supposedly one can get glow-in-the-dark duct tape at Home Depot…
i love that, but it won’t work. just trying to make the errands be the least amount of shopping places..
I think at this point you can get about a million different types of the stuff.
Yes, and in about 20 different colors and patterns. Also at Staples.
THANK YOU
(ummmm. that was for the ozzie pfunk. wth.)
You’re welcome. :) I thought that might make you happy.
dancing now. smiling. :D
YAY!!! Mission accomplished.
definitely. :D <3
Beans.
I know this is obvious, but I just re-realized that a lot of the things that regular folks do for fun, I find to be as fun as watching paint dry…
…and a lot of the stuff I do for fun, most regular folks would find to be violations of the Geneva Convention…
Heh…this is now on my Kay Top 10 Post List.
Considering I’ve barely slept the last couple of days I have a lot of energy…maybe it’s because I’m usually sitting at my new job…when you teach you move around a lot, or at least I did.
Dodging spitballs?
How’d you know?
gettin’ down just for the funk of it
and not just knee deep, either
Speaking of Ray Wilson singing Not About Us on the Calling All Stations album by Genesis in 1997…I like raisins in my oatmeal.
Wow, the 49ers looked great today. The depth on defense is ridiculous.
Yarp.
Thanks, and go As.
The best advice I ever got…well, besides always bet on black…is never let fear hold you back from trying something you want to do…it’s simple but it’s worked for me.
Okay, I’ve been sent down to AA Free Relish for a couple of weeks, but I will be back…posting from my phone. I’ll be posting more during the day, in little bursts, rather than the late night lounge fests, but I think that will be a fun change. You’re a great group of folks…see ya.
So the kids in the coop behind our house were playing a weird mix of music the other day, including a bunch of Offspring and Foo Fighters. It’s so strange to hear what the college kids are listening to these days, and most of the time its music from my high school era so even being into the 90’s was kind of refreshing. And then I heard this song. Didn’t know it so I used Shazam and came up with this, a brand new release. I kind of like it.
It actually reminds me a little bit of Television. It seems they’re back with a reunion series of shows – anyone else here interested in seeing them at the Independent in Nov?
That might be worth driving down for…
That Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers rec was excellent, the show was great. The style tilts toward country rock where Grace Potter is straight-ahead rock. I bet Nicki has watched Grace a little though because I saw some similar on-stage mannerisms. Thankfully they didn’t do the silly pop covers; covers were along the lines of “Piece of My Heart” (notably Janis Joplin) and a rocking “(Long Long Way Down to) Reno, Nevada” (Richard Thompson I think).

Looks like I’m going to the Cal-Northwestern game on Saturday.
I am ready for this season to start!! Oh…
come to brunch on sunday!
FYI just noticed a new sign saying no backpacks in the stadium.
Anyone know if backpacks were prevented from coming in, or is it a Raiders thing?
Isn’t it a Cal thing? I took a backpack into the Coliseum on Saturday with no problem.
that makes sense in context.
say, what does that “up” button do?
Takes you to the parent comment.
No backpacks are allowed at all now. I haven’t brought a backpack into an event in ages. For the current security it seems like a reusable grocery bag for your extras works much better.
(Also, I don’t know why I can’t shrink Oski. He was originally posted at width=350 and seems to have gotten bloated in the site conversion.)
My friend had a messenger bag kind of thing and he ran into no problems. I don’t think they even bothered to check it
There wasn’t any issue with Mrs. PDX’s ginormous purse – they really didn’t seem to be looking at all.
So, question coming from someone who hadn’t been to a college football game in 18 years prior to this weekend – is the “caller” guy with a microphone telling the students how to cheer a common occurrence now? Or just at Cal?
I found it exceedingly annoying.
The “mic man” thing has been going on at Cal games for at least 20 years. It’s irritating as hell and an excellent reason to sit on the other side of the stadium.
Plus the other side of the stadium was built in 2011 and the mic man side was built in the early 1920’s. For afternoon games in late October or November I do like the sun on the east side though. The porta-potty solution over there, less so.
I’m curious if it goes on elsewhere.
The whole thing reminded me of my two cousins’ bar mitzvahs, held in some of the ritzier areas of Chicago’s North Side, complete with an emcee that basically dictated every dance move the kids made during the next two hours. (Other lowlights: professional dancers who “escorted” the bar mitzvah boy onto the dance floor at the beginning of the reception, ice cream sundae bar, 3 foot tall centerpieces on each table).
And the elder of the two is essentially becoming a southern baptist now.

I loved all the Orioles fans on Twitter who were indignant that the Twins weren’t giving them Willingham for free.
Did we link this song yet?
i feel like yes because i’ve heard it before.
not the song that started playing after it though. that’s new to me.
I don’t know where the fast food stuff was but here is something. Colin we need a report.
Boston + burrito = nope
that’s what I gotta think.
Mexican food out here is terrible. Chipotle is essentially as good as it gets.
yup
Also, the average hourly wage for a fast food cook at any fast food restaurant in MA (not just Bolocoo)? $10.16
heh
Dan. Johnson.
The Orioles do end their season at home against the Red Sox …
Game 162 specialist!
God fucking damn the fucking Orioles! Do they get to sign EVERYBODY!?!
Johnson was supposed to be ours!
Gratuitous plug for a fundraiser I’m working on. Early bird prices end tomorrow (but just between you and me the discount will be extended.) Come on out and support your municipal animal shelter!
100% of proceeds will support Berkeley Animal Care Services including: emergency medical services and BadRap training classes for shelter pit bulls.
And there’s no game that night!
Last year it landed smack in the middle of October playoffs. One of the games in the ALDS we had our final big meeting before the event and I said “uh..guys…I’ll be out at the coliseum tonight–just give me a to do list and I’ll get to it later!” Since we didn’t advance, I didn’t have to worry about missing the event.
Lily and I meet with DeAnna next weekend :-)
Yay!! That is terrific.
(which reminds me I’m going to have to leave pretty soon!)
seriously though, two weeks ago both the A’s and giants were in town.
Fuck you MLB. thanks for cutting the A’s attendance
of course, it could be the A’s for not realizing that the bridge was closing and asking for a waiver last year
I know it’s been decades since any visiting MLB team stayed in the East Bay but you’d think they could have made an exception.
I understand why teams like to stay in SF, but this time…
Too bad the cabbie wasn’t an A’s fan and took him the LONG way around. Maybe get lost a bit.
They both went to Vandy, right? Might not have overlapped…
Pretty sure they were teammates.
In the interview I heard recently they didn’t overlap there, but they grew up close to each other in TN so Sonny always knew of him through little league and HS, and Price helped to recruit him and let him stay with him on campus visits etc. Sonny called him before first start, so they’re still buddies.
Happy 100th birthday Bill Shankley (and a nice win over ManUre to mark it).
Reminds me of my proudest prank moment (not that I was a lead helper, but it came out of my college and I did some planning/anticipating)
I liked the 84 Caltech one.
Moistly because I remember it live (ish, as i recall the cameras showed a replay of it)
Also, it gave people a reason to keep watching that dog of a game (my dad was suffering, being a proud U of I grad).
nice
Yup – and the full thing:
I’ve no idea who this is, but I love it.
