Irrelevant Music Blather: So let’s begin by saying if you’ve just got the new Dylan set (hint: it’s stunning) home and are flummoxed by what isn’t on it, I’ve got you totally covered right here. Cross that one off the bucket list for one of those hardcore heretics (moi) that thinks that record (hated more than perhaps any other made in the last 50 years) is among dude’s best, and has been waiting for a deluxe set of it to appear for pretty much his whole adult life. If you don’t like Dylan, I understand… but bear in mind he is probably the most revered songwriter in human history ever to directly refer to Charlie Finley in a song.
Important Baseball Stuff: With that outta the way, then what? The last time our lads saw Justin Verlander… well, you know. I remember sitting in the backyard in Hayward after Game 4, foot all scrunched up like a crumpled metatarsal, totally unable to 1) walk whatsoever and 2) comprehend what had just happened in the last of the ninth… and how certain, certain, sure it made me feel that we would lose not one more game on the way to the most unlikely trophy in sports history.
Maudlin Personal Story: The whole next day I felt so confident, only to end the night weeping like I did when I was 7 and the A’s beat the Mets in 7. I think we’re all here in some way waiting and hoping for that unfinished business to be completed, and we’ll do anything we can in these last 5 weeks of the regular season to will these guys — struggling so valiantly in a year when all the breaks they got in 2012 seem to be going against them… yet still through it all, they are right there — back where we need this thing to go.
Cliché-ridden closing: There are 32 games left. Today’s is a huge test and whaddaya know? Just like all the other ones it’s the only game of those 32 we can win today.
Additional bonus cliché: Let’s do this!

This is another terrible pitching matchup. Verlander has been very human this year, but I am keeping my expectations nice and low.
I’m counting on at least four walks from Barton.
When he’s pitching the 23rd inning?
three to go
Prevail, Tommy! Fail, Justin!
Which one pitches for us and by us I mean the Astros?
This title is… interesting.
I want to try In N Out some time.
Conveniently located between Oakland Airport and the Coliseum.
The burgers are good for fast food but it’s nothing earth shattering…their fries are terrible.
Their fries are the best in the business, by far.
The first time I had them, I thought they were the worst fries I ever had. By the tenth time, everything else paled in comparison. It’s all about the seasonal flavor profiles of fresh potatoes… I’m sounding like Iglew here, huh…
I think their fries are under cooked, mushy and gross.
They’re better if you order them well done.
Good to know…I have no clue when I’ll next be at one of their joints but I’ll try to remember that.
Agreed for sure
Yabut if you cook those potatoes even 15 more seconds, they’re gonna overcook.
The only way to get uniform crispness in french fries is to pre-blanch them, freeze them, and then put them in the fryer in a frozen state.
Iglew…there’s a name I haven’t thought of in a while.
Disagree about the fries. Now they have 0 staying power, so you beeter eat them there or in the car.
The veggie burgers are better than most too.
That’s not a high hill to climb…most veggie burgers I’ve had have been pretty bland.
They have veggie patties?
Another secret menu score!
I guess Tommy Milone doesn’t like pitching with an early lead.
And that posted in the wrong spot, haha.
i just order the “grilled cheese with everything”
Yup :-)
their burger cheese is gross is it the same cheese?
You can see the kid behind the counter shoving the potatoes into the potato shredder. Then the raw fries are dumped into the oil and cooked.
At other places the fry product comes frozen in giant bags from the Fry Factory. You don’t suppose there are other ingredients in those fries besides raw potato?
I like In-N-Out fries because I know for a fact I’m getting a natural product and not a bunch of chemicals.
Five Guys uses fresh potatoes too (I think). And their fries are way better. It’s because they cut them thicker.
I like my fries crispy and thicker. We don’t have a Five Guys here…sounds like I’m missing out.
The closest one to me is in Gilroy I think. I got addicted while living on the East Coast.
There’s one somewhere around Hayward or Fremont now.
There’s one across the street from my work in North San Jose
there is one in hayward, or it might be san lorenzo, on hesperian, near the target
Sunnyvale, near the corner of El Camino and Sunnyvale Avenue.
Woo! Getting closer!!
I have a couple of local burger joints that I love…fast food wise out here I don’t mind Backyard Burger.
I think we have one in Roseville or Folsom or one of those similar exurbs I very much would like to see burned to the ground or beamed up into space by suburbia-loving aliens.
The last time I was back in Sac I couldn’t believe how much Folsom had grown.
Unsustainably, and mostly around a dying big-box retail commercial model to boot.
I know two people who have homes there. One of them is happy the other one wants to get out of Dodge.
Morgan Hill, actually, not Gilroy. Same thing really.
Best fast food fries in the business. Burgers are good too, but they lost their super-special status when they over-expanded.
Totally agree. The burgers I remember from the East Coast outlets were incredible. I had one recently in Morgan Hill and it was sort of awful.
I mean, it’s fine. I probably like it better than InO, just because of the toppings. And the fries are WAAAAAAAAAAY better.
But it isn’t worth driving to Dublin.
I think Im the inly person on Earth that doesnt love their fries. They are ok, and I will never diss a place that has vinegar for me, but they are just meh. I do like grabbing some peanuts to snack on.
You are not the only one who doesn’t like their fries.
I need their fries extra crispy too.
I will try that. That actually makes sense.
I always err on the side of a fry that’s more well done than not. Personal preference.
In fact, if I’m at a place for the first time I usually ask them how crispy they normally cook their fries.
Places that have peanuts at the table make me have anxiety attacks.
They don’t have them at the table. They are in gigantic self-serve barrels.
The shells all over the floor is what bothers me most.
??? Peanut allergy?
Germ freak.
What’s the germ angle with peanuts?
People put tem in their mouth, then spit thmem on the ground of the restaurant. I panic, especially if I’m wearing flip flops.
People open peanut shells with their mouths? Savages.
Or sick bastards lick them and put them back in the bucket on the table.
When I was a little kid, I used to be SO gross… like unspeakably gross…
As an adult, I just about never get sick.
I think there’s a correlation…
Immunities are fun.
Baseball stadiums too. We sat in front of a mentally disabled guy at Kauffman Friday who spit shells in my hair and on my shirt.
Hmm, I did not realize this when I was spitting sunflower shells on the ground near our feet at the game we attended. Can’t promise it won’t happen again.
I’ll wear shoes next time. And pants.
Pants optional day at the O.co?
Yep. You missed it.
I am with you there. Their fries are just not my thing.
The problem is I don’t think you can really compare In-N-Out to Five Guys. They’re completely different types of places, and Five Guys is about twice as expensive. You get more, but you aren’t getting your money’s worth unless you like a lot of toppings on your burger since it’s all built into what you pay up front.
I do, though.
And they’re both fast-but-not-instant burger places. Hard to get more specific than that.
They are rapidly expanding.
As am I.
Here’s an up-and-comer: Diggers Diner
Decent burgers and great thick cut fries–one order is enough for two.
And in Brentwood, they’re located on Balfour Rd.!
(I swear by them.)
asvd
really its all about Super Duper when it comes to fast food burgers.
They even make their own pickles.
My one visit to Five Guys left me extremely underwhelmed.
Plus, you know that kid’s making something like $12 an hour for that hard work, too.
The racial composition of the work force at your typical In-N-Out is very noticeably different from work forces at some of the competition.
And unfortunately, it’s not just because of the money.
I’ve seen quite a few people of color working at In&Out, but I do get the impression that they are held to a higher pre-hiring standard than the fresh-out-of-high-school garden variety suburban white kids that mostly hold those jobs.
The average age of a fast food worker is 27
Not at InI, I’d wager.
In ‘n In, I apparently mean…
I’n’I build a cabin
I’n’I plant the corn
We gonna chase those crazy baldheads out of town! (sorry bed, Jah demands it)
I was referring only to In&Out.
That’s sad. But just goes to show that they have to be given appropriate wages. Fking McDonalds and their asshole CEO.
Wow…I knew it was a bit older than most people think but I had no idea it was 27.
I don’t have a huge sample size but places like Jack in the Box seem heavily populated with 30-something Latinos, at least in these parts, which is why I made the observation about the contrast with I-n-O.
I haven’t been to a Jack in the Box in 20 years. I probably hit fast food 2-3 times a month…it seems like it’s mostly teenagers serving me but maybe I’m not looking closely at who is really working at these places.
http://www.glassdoor.com/Salary/In-N-Out-Burger-Salaries-E14276.htm
Average is less than 11 an hour
That is an interesting part of their setup being able to see it all and again I do like the burgers.
McD’s:Potatoes, Vegetable Oil (Canola Oil, Soybean Oil, Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Natural Beef Flavor [Wheat and Milk Derivatives]*, Citric Acid [Preservative]), Dextrose, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate (Maintain Color), Salt. Prepared in Vegetable Oil (Canola Oil, Corn Oil, Soybean Oil, Hydrogenated Soybean Oil with TBHQ and Citric Acid added to preserve freshness), Dimethylpolysiloxane added as an antifoaming agent
BK: Potatoes, partially hydrogenated vegetable shortening (soybean oil), modified potato and corn starch, rice flour, dextrin, salt, leavening (sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium bicarbonate), corn syrup solids, xanthan gum, dextrose.
Chick-Fil-A beats them.
Around lunchtime the line for the drive-through at a Chick-Fil-A here is sometimes 35 cars long.
Is it for the food, or for the opportunity to politically hate on fags while filling one’s stomach?
The food…Fayetteville is not a particularly hateful town.
So they must be a particularly fat town, then…
Not for the South…this is Fayetteville
40% have keep Fayetteville Funky stickers on their car
10% have confederate flag stickers on their car
50% have Razorback stickers on their car.
Fayetteville seems like a place I could deal with for a couple years if I had to. Same with Athens (probably more so). Oxford or Tuscaloosa, I doubt it.
Athens is probably a good comparison. We have a real funky downtown and there are a lot of locally owned restaurants, bars and places to see music.
It’s a fun town.
Am I missing something with CFA? It was not tasty.
Yeah, I’m willing to put the politics aside to try something people rave about but I miss the appeal of that completely.
I think they’re okay…I like their chicken sandwich every once in a while.
It was limp and tasted weird.
Yes, probably not the first time I’ve said that.
Heh
The one I get is crispy and tasty…I have it maybe once a month.
Fries are better than McD and other super-major chains. I like the spicy chicken sandwiches better than a lot of that stuff too. I think it’s also healthier.
It’s only worthwhile in the super-major fast food chain context, though.
I like their soup as a different FF option.
On my journey home I got stuck behind a car driving 7mph down Telegraph Avenue. When I could finally get around it, it turned out to be because the driver was eating a bowl of soup. I was so close to stopping and slapping him.
What kind of soup?
i’m hoping for pho.
SOUP?!?!
I had a similar experience a couple months back. Going down MLK toward the 24/980/580 entrance a car was kind of lagging. When I glanced over at a red light the driver was eating something, holding the bowl in one hand and a spoon in the other.
Nothing beats Zaxby’s, across the board. I wish they had them on the west coast.
Don’t wish that. It’s exactly what killed 5 Guys
I thought it was all that fatty food they ate that killed them. Except the one guy with the peanut allergy. He just forgot his epi-pen.
I would sacrifice all the west coast 5 Guys and CFAs for a Zaxby’s in the bay area.
Not my point. No matter how good it is now, if it got big enough to land out here it would lose that magic
Perhaps, but considering how infrequently I’m able to have it now, I would take that chance. It’s not like they’re just rare out here; they’re completely non-existent.
Super Duper
I like the Zaxby’s chicken salad.
So are BK’s fries extra foamy, then?
Only when the fry cook jizzes in the grease.
All you need to do is have the fries extra crispy.
Their fries are beyond awful. Fully agree Bed
soon coming to a crime-ridden alameda. (sorry if topic’s been covered.)
Obligatory Minnesota Dylan reference: and sadly, most of the places in this 2006 tour of Dylan’s Dinkytown that were still standing when this was written are gone or about to be gone.
Some good tags for this thread.
I’m quite jealous of the Verland of Confusion one but Josh is a better wordsmith than I am.
(that was a G reference JUST FOR YOU Bri)
Thank you, sir.
I’m sure Bob Dylan is a genius but I’d rather pour hot wax down my ears than listen to him sing.
I did like a couple of his songs in the Traveling Willbury’s CD’s…his lyrics are amazing but I just have never gotten into the voice.
Which is what makes the 1969-71 period so amazing, because he puts on this character (different voice, indistinguishable from his own, and everything) and becomes a completely different artist in the process.
People who think that Bowie was the first to shapeshift are off base, Dylan did it first.
Which albums are we talking about here?
Nashville Skyline for one.
Nashville Skyline, Self Portrait and New Morning
I don’t think I’ve heard any of those. I am ashame.
i’m sure you’d recognize the album covers.
You must know “Lay Lady Lay.”
Yes. It’s been a very long time since I’ve heard it though. I am going to have to do some remedial Dylan work.
what makes the 1969-71 period so fascinating even beyond the music is that he intentionally tried to make music (Self Portrait in particular) designed and premeditated to destroy his audience’s absurd notion that he was their Messiah. He decided he’d attempt to make music the hippies’ parents would like, if only so they’d stop coming around his Woodstock house at 6am to kneel at his doorstep reverentially.
Not only did it work (he was never again regarded as anyone’s savior or spokesman), but now 40+ years later he’s getting to have his cake and eat it as the record — with the release of this deluxe package detailing it — is rehabilitated and takes its place as one of his acknowledged best and most honest, phony smooth crooner voice and all.
I love Self Portrait so much for exactly this reason: that it manages to achieve total honesty through total deception. It also prefigures the obligatory “Great Artist’s Jukebox” records and CDs, where you get to hear the music that inspired the artist to become what he/she is… except that unlike those other albums that feature the original versions of the inspirational tunes, this one has the artist’s own, completely unique interpretations.
then Self Portrait, then New Morning
“Planet Waves” was his return-to-form right before the great masterpieces that were “Blood On The Tracks” and “Desire.”
If you want later on I’ll break down Mike + the Mechanics early work for everyone.
I could actually do this…from memory…I’m just that damn cool.
The lineage goes back further than that, back to Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and his transformation into whatever the horror B-movie hit of the moment was…
I saw that Scoresese documentary about Dylan and I enjoyed it…maybe one of these years I’ll go back and listen to the earlier stuff.
There’s songwriting before him and songwriting after. That’s why he’s so revered despite having a sandpaper voice.
I could be crazy, but I swear I have heard Ray come to the table with an actual interesting thought or 2 recently.
Clips or it didn’t happen.
He must have started taking his ritalin again…
I’m not an expert on Detroit weather but it’s hard to see how they can play more than a couple innings. Burning Milone vs. burning Verlander, hmmm who benefits more there?
I don’t think I’m going to Burning Milone this year. It’s gotten too commercial.
Don’t hate the Playa, hate the game.
full of win
Excellent subthread.
Midwest weather changes quickly this time of year.
Runs? RUNS!
Hit ’em where they ain’t, Jed Lowrie.
Has Donaldson hit second before?
May 23rd
Against the Astros.
Exactly
Well, at least Cespedes made him throw 7 pitches. That’s something.
So, do you think we make any trades before September 1?
Dan Haren
So, we only trade for player we previously had now?
That is not my finest sentence ever.
You may have invented a new tense.
Bed: Inventor of things no one wanted.
I’d trade Milone and a minor prospect and cash for him right now
I’d trade Billy Beane’s left nut for him.
If Billy’s experience is anything like that of other parents I’ve known who had twins, he may be willing to give that away for free.
Shhhhhhh
This is a lot of pitches for the V man.
Pounce bitches!
WAITWHAT?!?
i didn’t feel any hurry to show up to this game. i guess mr V didn’t either.
great writeup, emperor.
thx AV :)
Nice start Tommy.
Too soon to warm up Chavez?
lol
Wow Milone, a leadoff walk. What could go wrong?
This guy dared to tell me at Fan Fest he was not gonna walk hitters.
Used to be he didn’t walk hitters.
just batters?
GETHIMOUTGETHIMOUTGETHIMOUT
he’s just handicapping verlander to make things even again.
ok. now he can start.
Scout is Pollyanna, isn’t she?
They really need to retire that “feature.”
Where the fuck is Brett Anderson. Why do we have to watch this bullshit.
Hard to wonder if Milone will get a single out in this game.
Leave him in there and hope for a rainout seems like the best bet.
I’m not even watching based on what little I saw I want him the fuck out of there. Holy crap.
40 minutes into this game there are still no outs in the bottom of the first.
Please tell me the bullpen is up. Get him out of there.
This is as Fail as it gets in the Shutdown Inning department.
Shitdown Unning…
That French Onion dip strikes again.
Well, now Callaspo has some redemption to do with the bat.
Oh, we have D’Angelo Jimenez playing 2B?
Because we have to play good defense to beat these guys…
Unreal
I don’t get it. When did Callaspo win the starting job over Sogard?
Right? This is nuts.
So on a pace for just a shade under 9 hours. Exactly what we need.
Game thread is on pace for 1100 comments. We’ll have to think of more topics like the In-N-Out fries.
Hmm…well, Burger King’s onion rings are nasty…or at least the ones I had back in 1989 were…which is the last time I ate at Burger King
You’re welcome.
… like a hole in the head.
Meanwhile, in southern California:
Is he basically retired?
He’s already an angry Grandpa.
GET OFF MY DAMN LAWN AND MY DAMN MOUND!
Wow, Milone is getting married! I wonder if, on his wedding night, he will nibble around the edges and change speeds liberally before grooving one right down the pipe as usual.
BWHAHAHAHAHA
I don’t know. But I hope his new wife has the bullpen warmed up and ready.
I SO want a bullpen!
Hee hee!
Speaking of fast food and the South, I was passing through Charlotte International Airport one recent morning and found a Bojangles right next to my gate. Nom nom nom nom…
Great at bat by Moss.
If you want me to liven up the game thread I could talk about the socks my wife bought for me today…it might be a little too edgy and NSFW but we could risk it.
Tube socks? Ankle cut? Details man…im on the edge of my seat.
Nike Ankle Cut socks…sorry I didn’t go in to detail earlier.
what color is the pompom?
Originally blonde but some white has begun to show up.
My socks don’t match. Well, they do…but they don’t.
Congratulations! As DFA has pointed out, new socks are one of life’s great pleasures.
it’s really the only thing i miss after discovering the flipflop lifestyle last spring.
I don’t wear flip flops….I’m a Republican.
you don’t miss having warm feet?
they don’t get cold anymore. most of the time a breeze on my toes is a delightful thrill. i think maybe keeping our feet damp and covered all the time makes them more susceptible to cold, but once the skin gets cured by air and sun like the back of your hand, no prob.
Agreed. I hate wearing shoes since my feet get hot (probably because I’m usually barefoot/flopped away from work)
i’m still new. do you have a good brand of non-plastic flipflops? i fell for bob marleys hard (the burlap sold me, i got a few pair all at once), but they are actually kinda cheaply made and get real ratty real quick. i need some that feel like natural materials but that i can wash.
Hot feet suck.
I now only ever wear sandals on airplanes, since hot feet on planes are about as unpleasant as it gets.
So instead we all have to smell your feet in an enclosed space with recirculated air. Thanks.
My feet smell like roses.
I go flip flop for flights to make it easier to get through the security line.
This.
smiles
The only good thing about socks is that moment after a long day when you take them off.
this x365
I’ve always heard that is bras and pony tails.
definitely bras.
i know i feel good when i take one off.
bowchickawowwowwwwwww
High fastball or something down and away?
Mistake pitch for a Cespedes double and RBI.
I don’t know. Fastballs right down the middle have seemed like a pretty good way to pitch him recently.
They’re usually up in the zone.
{puts down torch and pitchfork}
hee
there are better sites to get music reviews from than pitchfork
Verlander was so engrossed in his conversation with the 2nd base umpire that he threw a meatball even #52 could hit :)
Verlander getting sidetracked by a discussion about balks (apparently) with the 2B umpire, just wasn’t a good look for him in that inning.
This seems like a game that might need 6 or more runs to win.
Hehe, CJ Wilson.
Tommy says he refuses to shut it down!
Oh god, it’s happening again.
roxy said motor city kitties. i thought that was ours/AN’s. or is it more general than that?
also, it’s not like i expected him to recite william blake. (what do you mean william blake?)
I first heard it from CT.
makes me think he might have picked it up from the group still. or calls perhaps. not that important i guess, just struck me.
Oh gosh, the writers in the Sporting News were calling them that 40 years ago. “The Pale Hose” comes from that style of writing too.
really? interesting.
I wonder if there was ever an effort for “the crimson hose” or similar?
ha!
I heard motor city kitties long before I was ever on the internet.
Verlander and Milone both 3 R, 3 H, 3 BB, 3 K
Has anyone ever seen them together?
Not anymore!
I have the game on mute. Once this thing gets delayed, have they said whether or not it is expected to resume?
HR moss.
never mind. i thought you had the radio on mute. ha.
Haha. When it was Ray, Roxy, and Vince this past Saturday, that thought certainly crossed my mind.
Ha! I just got here and thought the same thing.
Moss homer!
Too early to think about taking Milone out now and putting in someone you hope can pitch a quick bottom of the 5th?
but but, the pitcher of record!
Not a bad idea.
This is a real question-given the shape of the bull-pen, who would that be?
Wow, fk yeah!
The umpires dig themselves a deep hole when they play in the rain this long and then somebody takes the lead like that.
Quick 3 outs—->more rain—->tarps—->called after 5—->A’s win
apparently the groundskeeper here has experience with all types of grass. not sure why i thought of you at that moment…
I was doing some grass examination and maintenance just now, funny you’d mention that.
SPLITS – almost
Woo, one out!
two!
You know what? Only staplehead makes that out.
You’re probably right…
Well, it’s official now.
Bring the rain, literally.
A’s win?
THIS WEATHER IS DANGEROUS! Call it!
That’s right, Trout, “TOASTED”… like the Angels franchise :)
It is better for the A’s to have them winning tonight, though.
yes yes yes
They are SO fkd it’s not even funny. I wonder if they’ll see the north side of .500 again this decade…
If I was Moreno, I’d package Pujols, Hamilton, AND Trout, and see if I could get someone to take the albatross contracts (and a prime prospect or three) off my hands in exchange for getting the Kid too…
Trout must be wondering WTF went wrong, now he’s stuck on a crappy team that might suck for a minute.
Smith lit that one up.
Okay, don’t call it.
WOW Seth Smith!!!!!!! And FK you Torii for the senseless deke with the glove, dumbass.
He really does seem like a total asshole.
If we face them in the playoffs, I have a very amusing plan that includes Diamond Level seating, a hot young guy, and repeatedly asking Torii if it’s ok if I make out feverishly with said hot guy during his ABs. And then doing so.
Love. It.
Huh. I completely missed that Toriiii came out as a homophobe. I know feel even better about hating him.
I fking hate his stupid bat flip.
The game was getting that NFL exhibition “Don’t get hurt!” feel.
when the stars threw down their spears,
and water’d heaven with their tears…
Strip Go Fish?
I’m in but I should warn you playing Strip Go Fish is how I paid for college.
I’ve been working 4-5 12 hour shifts a week. I can afford it.
Jennifer: Rich Chick
Do you have any seventeens?
I don’t know the rules.
Jennifer: Strip Go Fish Tease.

Bummer.
I gotta say, if the A’s win today, my expectations for this series will have been met.
The entire road trip for me, and I was hoping for 2 in Baltimore.
Mine will have been exceeded.
So how ’bout that Bay Bridge?
KTVU has a countdown clock for the closure that is down to the second. That might be a little more precise than necessary.
Our reporter who’s been out on the new bit says the view of the East Bay is really spectacular. He says it’ll give drivers the same sense of wow driving east from Treasure Island that you get now driving west on the upper deck, when you come out of the tunnel and suddenly there’s San Francisco.
Neat! You can count me as one who thinks that investing more money on the more aesthetically pleasing bridge design plan was the right choice.
In that case I’d probably wait at least a month to drive on that.
It’s cute. But I like old guys.
Tomorrow’s game is on MLB Network.
Make that Thursday’s game.
We done here?
TWSS
Games in Detroit always make me think of Bill King talking about the restaurants he liked in Greektown.
It’s a final!
But I haven’t studied…damn me for partying this whole semester.
and i came to school naked. i hate this dream.
That’s going to put you at a severe disadvantage at strip go fish. Or maybe an advantage. I’m not sure.
Who had “Milone outduels Verlander in CG outing”?
I did. But then I also had about 14 bong rips of Tahoe OG, several Quaaludes and what I think might have been DMT, so…
I hope you said Hi to the machine elves and Terence McKenna for me.
not only did I say Hi, I transcribed Terence McKenna’s posthumous autobiographical memoirs onto the head of a pin as well.
Pinheads are so HUGE!
yet they manage to move.
Brian29
Game called. A’s win.
Suck it, Rally Tiger!
Fk yeah!
Game called. We win!
Sweet wet Kraut; a split at least! Every time we lose hope they pull us back in.
Um… that sounds dirty.
wooo!
Victory! Another complete game from a dominant A’s starter!
So, apparently those top of the 6th stats count? When did they start doing that?
NOTHING HAS CHANGED (at least not recently).
Really, huh. I know (at least I thought I knew) at some point in my lifetime the rule was to revert back to the last completed full inning. Any recollection of when that changed, if it ever did?
The only time the score reverts, and has ever reverted to my recollection, is when the visiting team ties the game or takes the lead in the top of an inning after the fifth, and then the game is called before the home team completes its bottom of the inning or ties the game or takes the lead. In those situations the visitors’ runs are taken off the board and the home team is declared the winner. Previous discussion of this rule, which was reinstated for this season and impacted a game in St. Louis, here.
The A’s leave the bases loaded! We’re all doomed!
FUCK THIS TEAM, bases loaded nobody out and THEY CAN NOT FUCKING SCORE!
If this has been discussed, I apologize, but why is Colon going on Thursday in place of Parker?
They want to give Parker extra rest.
Also, despite having lost the season series to those mighty Mariners, Oakland finds itself one-win away from winning this thrilling best of seven against Detroit.
Tampa, Baltimore, Cleveland all lose.
Come on Seattle, win a FKing game.
… against someone other than the A’s.
Not going to do it by bunting with two on and nobody out. Not to mention popping it up to the pitcher.
or balking
Or grounding out weakly to short.
Monitoring these crap teams trying to beat the Rangers is aggravating.
fk
The A’s now have no CSN “insider”.
Did they ever?
The tweeted photo of Blazing Jeeps was the only time I noticed that guy. It seems like there are a lot of refugees from CSN’s Bay Area operation moving on to bigger and better things. Jaymee Sire at ESPN too now?
Yes, she is. Last seen I believe doing some side-line reporting at the LLWS.
Gutierrez was awful. Good riddance.
fk that dude hes a douchebag
This would not go over well.
I would prefer the purple dinosaur.
your link if broken
Dammit. The Rays are pushing Price back to Friday.
bullpen breaking down though.
In fairness, they do play on a baseball field.
i think the real contest for tomorrow’s game should be about who’s got the goofier picture.
Tough to beat a guy with inconsistent eye color.
But if anyone could do it, it would be Bartolo’s hair.
The pic in the scrolling headlines on the A’s site is even worse.
true, but job 1 for that day wasn’t to get his picture taken not looking funny, as presumably all these team headshots happen.
That’s a good point. It’s easy to find someone looking funny during the course of 162 games, but on photo day y ou hope to get it right. Which reminds me of the Chris Archer picture. He looks stoned.
After that complete game performance yesterday I guess Milone needed some extra rest.
Does the 10 day rule still apply after 9/1, or can we still have Tommy back once rosters expand. (Dont know if I do or not, just curious..)
Slusser said that the 10 day rule applies still
Thanks, and go As.
On twitter she says 10 days or until the River Cats season is over, which it is on Monday.
Weird. I was certain it was 10 days regardless.
It would be kind of ridiculous to make him stay with a team that isn’t playing.
It’d be more about not abusing the 25 man roster rules than about what team he was playing for.
Sure, but he techinically wouldn’t be coming back on the 25-man roster, since the 40-man roster can play as of next week.
isn’t there a prohibition for healthy players on the 40 man to be able to play in the playoffs barring injury?
As far as I know anyone in the org as of August 31 can be on the playoff roster.
No, they have to be on the 25 man roster by Aug 31. They can substitute a DLed player as long as they’re in the organization by Aug 31.
It’s the 25-man roster plus players on the 15-day DL on 8/31, so that gives the A’s 28 spots to play around with (Jaso, Norris and Reddick). Then if anybody from that group is hurt anybody in the organization as of 8/31 can substitute for them. The reality is (!) there’s a lot of flexibility in roster construction for each postseason series.
Yup. It only seems like you can stick anyone on the roster as of August 31 because just about every team has a couple of players on the DL to give that flexibility.
Aha. Thanks for the clarification, both of youse.
They sent him to Stockton, and they’re already eliminated while Sacramento could still make the postseason.
Well, you know, gotta get ready for that postseason push.
I’m going to need you to be good today, “King” Felix.
I don’t think he heard me.
nope
He seems to dominate everyone except for Texas.
the seattle broadcast pans to the kings court saying K at 2 strikes.
there appears to be over 100 people there, but saying “k, k, k, k, k” etc is kinda sad.
Great minds…
Today’s edition of cute and fuzzy Elvis andrus:
Smoak fouls a pitch off, barrel og bat breaks off and flies all the way out to short. Elvis steps forward fields the bat cleanly, and underhands to kinsler at second.
This “Felix’s K Zone” business, and the M’s broadcast’s need to show them changing “K K K K K” every time he gets two strikes on somebody is quite annoying. Still better than the Texas broadcast though.
heh
my feed just crashed. I am not going to restart it
Hate you Felix.
good lord. I just check it again.
what the hell?
ugg you weren’t kidding
Why does it feel like we’ve time warped?
Suzuki, Barton – wtf happened in the last two weeks?
Excellent, now the playoff push can begin for real! We missed you, as did the A’s.
[blush]
The team lacked mojo for some reason.
Hee!
Just wait for Pig to return.
As long as FU stays away I’m a happy man.
Hi!
Damn right!
Thank god you’re back! Beane was threatening to call TLong and Chris Singleton if you didn’t return soon!
the A’s just wanted to welcome you back with a good alohahahaha.
Heh, Cindy’s grandma calls him pineapple boy.
Too bad we didn’t get Victorino instead.
This plate ump is killing me.
hey, he got it to a rain delay didn’t he?
