Mark Buehrle, who threw a quick two-hit shutout last time out because he was in a hurry to get to the Tim McGraw show across town, faces Dan Straily tonight at the chilly Coliseum. BoMel sends all your favorite right-handed hitting platoon players out to face the Jays’ veteran southpaw.
Coco DH, CY25 CF, Lowrie 2B, Cespedes LF, Donaldson 3B, Freiman 1B, Norris C, Reddick RF and ROSIE STAR OF THE GAME! SS. Eric Sogard and his hitting streak are on the bench.
I love it.
I LOVE THOSE!
Rickey better win.
(Randall Simon’s eyes light up)
Wanna bet that Reggie said no to this?
He was a notable omission from the Oaklandish 1969 T-shirt, so no doubt.
I can’t stop staring at this.
What took them so long and how can I get to wear one?
We should make our own
You work on the head. I’m sure it can be checked through when you come back to Oakland.
This is certainly something
It wasn’t all that bad last night once I got inside, BTW. I had sent my pregame message from the windiest part of the plaza, and I had chosen my clothing poorly, partly because I got home from a quick trip to Minnesota Sunday night and a lot of my clothes smelled like my niece’s Schnauzer.
It’s funny that he of all people would share this:
Didn’t miss the Overstock “O” by that much.
What in the world is going on with Jose Reyes’ hair?
Buehrle is such a breath of fresh air in this era of three-and-a-half-hour ballgames. It’s a pleasure to watch him go about his business. I hope he gets his brains beat out.
Yeah.
Two hard-hit balls (and a classic CY foul pop-up). I think they’ll get to him eventually.
OK, never mind.
http://fieldofteams.csnbayarea.com/2013/07/30/three-as-prospects-have-a-unique-living-situation/
I don’t think that’s “unique” even in the majors, and certainly not in the minors where sharing costs is important. I remember when Mark Mulder and Eric Chavez were sharing a place out in Walnut Creek, before either was married. I bumped into them in Target one day and their cart was full of chick-bait like scented candles.
Yeah, there’s nothing really abnormal about this.
that is what casey is good at
I want a nacho bar.
Huh. SS? 2B?
195 inning career. none since 2009
at short
Meh.
Also, Green was a late scratch tonight.
i would be ok wth that
Weird, hope it’s not 3rd base…
He’s a good backup 3B, and I assume he will platoon with Sogard at 2B otherwise.
He started 142 games at second for the Royals in 2009 but has been strictly a third baseman since then.
Jane Lee says he’ll be playing 2B here.
Well that doesn’t seem like the biggest upgrade then. I guess he’s kind of decent?
Everyday or just against lefties?
That could just be Kendrick, or he could have no range left. I guess we’ll find out. He’s also a switch hitter, but better from the right side.
As a RHB: .301/.347/.416 career, .262/.330/.405 this year.
He’s no Chase Utley, nor does he help the defense the way a real SS would. But it’s probably at least a small upgrade, and the price seems right.
At least that means SuckAss is gone again.
If it’s one-for-one that’s a very good use of Grant Green.
agreed
Thanks, and go As.
OK I like it.
Thanks, and go As.
Hi!
Get your last looks at Rosales, everybody.
Callaspo is under contract next year as well, so says B-Ref.
Peavy to BoSox
Hrmph.
Three way deal with Tigers I’m reading?
Tigers involved somehow according to Twitter
Thanks, and go As.
Sawx giving up Iglesias +
That means Xander may be coming up, yum.
Hmmm…I wonder if that means Bogaerts comes up.
Jinx!
Double Jinx!
Looks like Iglesias goes to Detroit. Peralta suspension insurance.
Aw. Hope the price was high
White Sox are getting Avisail Garcia and prospects from the Red Sox.
Garcia and Iglesias are both better than any A’s prospect other Russell and Gray and probably more valued than Griffin or Milone. No chance of us matching the price tag.
M O J O
Callaspo for Green is probably addition by subtraction. Callaspo’s an MLBer, A’s clearly never liked Green’s lack of defense.
He looked pretty bad in the bigs.
I still think he’ll hit.
I don’t. He should get a decent chance to prove me wrong in Anaheim these next two months though.
I’m worried, only because he could make us look dumb, but Collapse-o is never going to make us look smart
I think he might hit, but not enough to make him an asset anywhere given his lack of glove.
I was more referencing his defense, but yeah, he had some good contact.
this inning has come inches from being a big one
Pretty close damn close, that was a great fucking catch, ugh…
G’dammit.
TELL THEM WE MEANT AYBAR
Defensive numbers were pretty bad for Callaspo in his one year playing 2B. Didn’t look too nimble out there over the weekend…
Did the zoo come to the Coliseum tonight?
I agree, he hasn’t played 2nd sine 2010, mediocre hitter.
Your “addition by subtraction” comment above is pretty close; Billy got something of non-zero value for Green, whose value is clearly pretty close to zero.
And it’s got to mean no more Rosales, too.
I think I’d rather have Rosales than Callaspo as a utility infielder. Is that insane of me?
Maybe.
sogard as a back up ss
It’s insane of you.
(as Rosie fires a routine throw past Lowrie out to Reddick)
Also I would just like to point out you can sort of hide his defense with late inning Sogard substitutions considering that the A’s like to platoon a lot anyway.
outs would be better than smashes, dan.
com on cowgill
Bad time to boot it, Cespedes.
fail
C’mon Yo…
Dan focus!
I usually think Straily looks good, even when giving up runs, but not tonight.
Arencibia last year: 18 BB, 108 SO in 372 PA.
This year: 14 BB, 107 SO in 356 PA.
Joe Morgan would comment about how cosistent he is.
Career OBP of, wait for it, .270.
Not a base clogger!
but hayherst is a scrub
Hamilton!
(I feel dirty now.)
(bases clearing double, Angels lead 7-6)
Hells yeah, eww i feel dirty now…
Hahaha
Okay, that was good.
The radio guys (including Ray) are referencing certain “fake” Twitter accounts. Somebody here with the right sense of humor ought to set up @FakeCotroneo.
that would be high octane fun
It crosses my mind to do it as a community thing with a shared password.
that might be ok
6 A’s RUNZ MOJO
Bring em’ home Not So New Guy!
Nate may be pressing because of all the Jews in the house tonight.
Phish thumping away down at Harvey’s. Some nights I wouldn’t mind if the stage and speakers were pointed this way, but mostly I’m glad they aren’t.
And the Angel bullpen already blew it.
WTF Straily…
Activate bullpen pls.
So Grant Green: Worst A’s career ever? -0.7 WAR in five games is pretty tough to beat.
Yup (by WAR/Game) … only close comp would be Owen Conway’s -0.4 in 4 games in 1915.
Fuck off Suck Ass…
wtf adam. we are saying we may like you still
That’s fitting on what is undoubtedly the last game here for Adam Rosales, unless he somehow sticks in Sacramento again.
I have a feeling we’ll be seeing him smiling in the Oakland dugout in September, somehow.
Oh, I assume Rosales will clear waivers again, will be outrighted to Sacramento, and then Kay will get her wish with Rosales as a utility IF in September.
Dave Cameron write up on the trade.
Rosales is “great defensively at short” my ass. Every time they say that he does something miserably stupid to fk us.
he haz a hoze
His arm is stronger than Lowrie’s. Any other differences, meh.
Yup, but honestly I’d rather kick Andy Parrino to the curb and keep Suck Ass around, I know I know, but what are you gonna do…
This game is painful and needs to be quicker.
et burhle pitch for both
let
I know, deception in the title for sure.
10-7 Angels
11-7
I am not sure why this guy is on my twitter feed, but he’s a fucking moron.
Thanks, and go As.
If nothing else, Callaspo is a nice addition to Bob’s pinch-hitting schemes.
Hahahaha
he also said denorfia was matt holiday or maybe it was matt carson
Former ** poster, right? Left in a huff after getting pissed at ****?
I remember him.
Yeah, he was pretty stupid.
I think he had his good and bad points but he was one of those guys who always had to crow about his opinion in some way, IIRC.
He always hated Corey Brown. He was right about that one.
I think he and I clashed off and on – who doesn’t? – but we also agreed on some stuff. About normal, I’d say. I think he’s flipping out on this trade unnecessarily, though.
He was thejd44 at the OC.
Never woulda guessed!
As long as we’re posting dumb things from Twitter:
Jesus Christ
Seriously.
#GiantsFan.
Once a FKing idiot, always a FKing idiot.
My brain hurts.
Maybe if they threw in Zito too.
We need us some Francouer too.
Now batting 7/39 (.179) for the Giants.
All right, still a lot of baseball left, Let’s do this A’s, WIN IT.
You owe us 2 runs SA.
wonder if rosales knows and is throwing the game
(as Straily continues to pitch like shit) Well hopefully Anderson – Colon will be enough and the playoffs indeed are as crapshooty as we think. I guess we can also hold out hope that Gray can come up and dominate and the A’s will think about him in the rotation as well.
Vince and Ray joking about fake twitter accounts.
did ray see fake ray fosse?
Oh yeah, he knows all about it, that’s what they were referring to.
hey look CYs25th pop out of the game
Friend asks: lol what is that Grant Green trade?
I say: Basically deciding Callaspo > Rosales and seeing the Angels are collecting shitty defenders, so here have Grant Green.
wildest alcoholic nightmare in TX
Not real confident the Angels will hold on to this.
one out in bottom 9. 11-10 LOLANGLES
now fieeri now in
2 out. kinsler up
walks. beltre
I haz a scurred
crap
The Angels are so worthless. I can’t even believe it
It’s amazing.
Just wow…
Oh for fucks sake…
Think Reddick took Lowrie’s knee to the head.
It could have been a lot worse; that wasn’t really a solid shot.
“xrays show nothing”
fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck
Yikes. Poor Reddick
Son of a bitch is tough as nails.
Just rub a little dirt on it, Josh.
In a 5-0 game I’d probably be inclined to give him the rest of the evening off even though it doesn’t look serious on the surface.
DP pls.
Thx baseball gods.
there you go
LOL at the Comcast Sportsnet Central update calling the A’s trade a “big move.”
Billy’s comments about Callaspo, as played on the radio, were more or less “Rosales sucks and we just needed to improve our infield if only marginally”.
“We needed somebody, and there wasn’t very much available, so….”
He could’ve just traded Green for Yunel 6 months ago. sigh…
He could have?
Didn’t the Marlins get someone who was basically Grant Green in return for Yunel?
Derick Detrich is basically as shitty as green
You never know, though. Maybe the Jays liked him.
Marlins
Er, yeah. Them.
If I remember correctly, all indications were that the A’s had a deal in place but balked because of makeup concerns and the price was very cheap (as evidenced by the eventual Dietrich return). So if not Green exactly, still no one we would’ve missed.
Yunel has been a model citizen and the Rays have reaped the benefits (on pace for almost a 4 WAR season with 2 cheap team option years left).
model is a stretch, but not mind numbingly dumb
’twas surely a mistake.
ALSO HANLEY. FUCKING GOD DAMMIT. FUCK.
Thanks, and go As.
:(
Yeah, Hanley is the one that gets me. So fking close to quite possibly the second best SS in the game. Though I wonder if the Lowrie deal still would have been made.
I’d be hella cool with a Lowrie 2B/Hanley SS infield.
Thanks, and go As.
They could stay on the bench to conserve energy because it would have been just as effective as the MINF defense.
Hanley is awesome I don’t care what you say.
Thanks, and go As.
Oh he is. Im just saying the defense would suck inbetween watching lazers rocketed all over the field.
We’ll just outscore everybody, softball style.
Thanks, and go As.
Worked for the Angels!
And now we know who Billy is rooting for at the big football match tomorrow.
A’s runz MOJO!
Fk…
Stop wasting your mojo, it’s one of those nights.
FKing Buehrle…
So if Cruz is suspended, the Rangers offense is basically just Beltre?
Cruz is listed as likely.
If he is indeed initially suspended, there is almost zero chance Cruz would appeal, right?
Good bye for good (I hope).
Hey, it’s your winner of the 2013 AL All-Star Game Final Vote, setup guy Steve Delabar!
Don’t trip Suck Ass.
Why did they let Rosales bat against the righty?
Last hurrah?
Sogard still hurting from getting hit last night?
Frieri blows the save again
God, the slegna suck.
The “should be quick” part was definitely right compared to that one, which started two hours before we did.
Ridiculous error by Callaspo’s replacement at 3B to blow the lead….
So we’re already down one win on this trade.
The Rangers have 12 games remaining vs. the Angels (including tonight’s) while the A’s have just 6 games against them.
weaver and wilson a few more times. (i know I know)
Um, 6 run mojo?
A’s mojo!
Remember this ex-A prospect?
Stassi?
It will be kind of funny if he’s the one we end up regretting having given up in that trade.
But I’m not going to worry until he can go more than a couple months without getting hurt.
Yup
#elite
easy
Semi-serious: I’m not fully convinced that a Russell – Lowrie middle infield would be worse than a Lowrie – Callaspo middle infield the rest of the way.
Next year.
Id be down
Final return for WSox on Peavy: Avisail Garcia, 2 hard throwing relievers without the numbers to back it up, and a raw, all field no bat shortstop.
Along with those prospects, the Sox gave up Jose Iglesias.
I think the equivalent for us would be Choice (though he’s worse than Iglesias), Ryan Dull, Tucker Healy, and Daniel Robertson.
The relievers might be off (Dull and Healy have the numbers to back it up but not the stuff), but in terms of quality, I think it’s about the same. Robertson is better than the shortstop they gave up but that makes up for Choice being worse than Iglesias.
I am pretty sure I would have made that deal, but then again, Beane is much better at this than I am.
Let’s score A’s runz boys.
Moar than teAse pls.
The beat writers always have to deal with a lot of dumb after a trade like this.
There’s no doubt. It’s like opening the floodgates to the worst of the sports talk radio morons.
I would have been willing to give up more for Kendrick
I would have been fine with that, depending on the people involved.
absolutely, since basically we gave up nothing for Callaspo
Thanks, and go As.
I wouldn’t say nothing. I hate Green. Didn’t like the pick, but he has been well regarded by spec followers to the point that he isn’t nothing.
That’s why I said basically, but he’s still a 25 year old who doesn’t have a defensive position.
Thanks, and go As.
and yet Choice hits worse then him and is a top spec even at a less valuable defensive position.
Dude. That comparison is silly on so many levels.
Choice is 23 in his first year of AAA and has an .857 OPS
Green is 25 and in his second year of AAA had an .879 OPS, and it was .796 last year as a 24 year old in his first year of AAA.
Green sucks at defense. Choice has played all 3 OF positions this year and still has played the most of them in CF.
Basically what the hell are you talking about
Thanks, and go As.
To be fair to me Choice has gone on a bonanza in the last 10 days including 5 doubles a triple and two home runs. Last time I looked I remember him about 15 lower in wRC+
I haven’t seen anyone neutral suggest that choice will stick in center.
He won’t stick in center. But you can’t say that he plays “at a less valuable defensive position” when Green doesn’t even have a defensive position.
Green “plays” positions that are positive on the defensive scale badly. Choice plays a position on the negative end well.
Yeah I don’t really see that helping your argument. Green may stand at second base, but he is unplayable there at the major league level. Ditto for SS and 3B. Choice, meanwhile, is a good corner outfielder who can probably play some CF at the big league level, though not every day.
The bigger problem is that Green is two years older than Choice and repeating AAA. Even if Green could play corner outfield at the same level as Choice (which he almost certainly could not), he does not have Choice’s potential with the bat when you look at their numbers and ARL.
this
The ARL thing is true if you don’t have a significant wRC+ gap. They did about a week ago.
an average Corner outfielder is -7.5 runs a -10 second basemen is -7.5 runs when you add fielding and position.
Do you think Green is only a -10 second baseman? I don’t.
Today, as well as a week ago, there was absolutely no doubt that Choice is by far outoperforming Green with the bat. He hit every level more than a year younger and hit significantly better than Green.
To put this into some perspective, by the way:
Even ignoring the fact that Choice was more than a year younger entering each level, and even ignoring the fact that the gap grew with each level, Choice has hit on average ~16 wRC+ better than green. That is roughly ~.026 wOBA, or equivalent to 1.5 WAR difference over a full season. That is roughly a difference between what Cespedes is hitting this year and what CY25 is hitting this year.
If you factor in the age and progression that number can only get significantly higher.
I really don’t see any way of suggesting Choice hasn’t had the better “career” so far overall, if anyone is trying to.
And I wasn’t. I was suggesting that his output is similar to Choice but can play a more valuable position, even though he played it badly, and therefore wasn’t “nothing”
In which way is Choice’s output similar to Green’s? Not offensive, surely.
Like I said previously if you looked at their stats before he was called up they were basically even for this year.
Even, maybe, but the context also matters when you look at age, time spent at each level and all that.
This. Saying that Choice had similar hitting stats to Green is, while technically correct, completely wrong to assess their respective prospecting value as hitters.
When did I say that they had equal prospecting value?
*as hitters
which is not something I said either.
Whether they suggest it or not, he’s been playing all 3 positions. I don’t pretend to know whether or not he will, but he moved when they tried/failed to play Green in CF, and he moved again when they started trying Weeks there as well.
Thanks, and go As.
I think the order of events is wrong. They moved Green to second base so then they decided to try weeks in CF.
Green was drafted as a SS and moved all over the friggin place trying to find a position though
Thanks, and go As.
right.
Choice is better than Green but that doesn’t necessarily mean that Choice is a good prospect.
I guess we could get into semantics and personal definition of “good” here, but Choice definitely has value.
Yes, I believe he is a borderline top 100 prospect which definitely has value.
I think that is a fair description
This is approximately true. I would try to trade him for value though. I think he becomes a role player rather than a valuable starter. For a guy with huge power, he hasn’t really shown it in game enough.
Yup, hence has value but not necessarily “good”.
But he has significantly improved his K rate and OBP as he’s moved up levels. That’s pretty encouraging, since we know he still has the ability to hit the ball a long way.
The problem is we don’t know this. We also don’t know if cutting the Ks has come at the expense of the power.
I think it’s safe to say in terms of value, Choice gets you more than Callaspo.
This is what I was saying.
No it isn’t!
Yes it is. People had balked at Choice being dealt. I did not say that Choice was more valuable, I said that he had hit better, for which he had much of the season.
Yeah, Green was still something, especially considering the round he was picked in. It’s not like the A’s traded some no-name scrub for Callaspo.
It comes off as them seeing a relatively cheap way to upgrade their infield to the extent Rosales is no longer needed, without having to give up a larger part of their MLB roster. It also tells me they decided the potential of Green’s bat is not enough to outweigh his defensive liabilities and lack of a solid position.
I’m the opposite. Liked the pick, have very little hope for him now.
Furries.
At the Coli.
Ewwwwwwwwwww
Ugh..
Ultra dumb bunt by the Angels.
Incredibly stupid.
This must be what it’s like rooting for a Scioscia-managed team. I suddenly feel empathy for the Rev.
Let’s not get crazy now.
Scioscia was ejected in the 2nd.
Still.
he should be booted in the second more often
If by “second,” you mean the place where #2 comes from, then yes.
So long and thanks for the teAse
Well that sucked, hopefully they were just saving it for tomorrow, anyone going?
The nice thing about the otherwise stupid no-TV weekday games: no possibility of the situation-comedy scenario where you call in sick and then are spotted at the game.
Hopefully, they can still find a Freiman replacement in August.
Of the previous 106 games, only 12 have been played more quickly than that one (one of those being a 7-inning final). Meanwhile the Rangers and Angels plod on.
Leadoff walk. #anglols
Not for much longer.
Winning run at 3B with one out.
1st and 3rd, one out…
Aaaand that’s a wrap, Martin dingers…
And the last two nights vs. LAA are the Rangers’ first two walk-off wins of the season.
really? huh. I don’t know what that says, probably nothing. but interesting. How many times have they been walked off?
Fucking hell Angles!
They’re going to completely quit on the season, aren’t they? Looks like the pitching already has.
FK you, Scioscia
Mark Ellis at the plate with a chance to walk the Yankees off…
And he did it.
Slegna screwing us on purpose.
I’m sure Rangers fans said the same thing a few days ago.
Yes, but we’re real
RT @Alden_Gonzalez Grant Green will go to Triple-A, where he'll play mostly 2B but bounce around.
— Jane Lee (@JaneMLB)

So both sides see this as a journeyman infielder for AAA fill deal, and we’ve probably already overanalyzed it to death in this thread.
This Haberman guy is incapable of expressing a coherent thought, even with time to prepare. I don’t understand how a person like this gets hired for a radio job.
Scraping beneath the bottom of the barrel?
lo
LOL

A’s shut-out And no Bacon Tuesday. Crappy night.
Thanks, Jewish Heritage promo.
FDLS on the list of those who may be suspended.
where is he? and jordon noberto?
Hasn’t pitched this year really, he filed a grievance earlier this summer about getting sent down ( and not DL I think?) while injured or something, not sure where it’s at.
Ah here.
TJ surgery.
congratulations you”ve won your grievance, not give $100,000 back!
Forgot to mention, Norris and (clumsily) Doolittle making Sogard-power glasses on Sunday was my favorite moment of the season.
